Capcom Comments on Wii Sales of Okami
« on: November 20, 2008, 03:13:29 AM »
The worldwide sales of the Wii version have barely surpassed US sales figures of the PS2 original. However, Capcom expects Okami to still sell steadily because of word of mouth.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=17236

Christian Svensson, Vice President of Strategic Planning & Business Development for Capcom America, issued a statement regarding sales figures of Okami Wii. According to Svensson, sales of the Wii version of the game are at about 280,000 units worldwide while the PS2 version moved about 275,000 units in America alone.

Many publications have mistakenly reported that Okami Wii has finally surpassed sales of its PS2 counterpart, hence the comments from Svensson. Though Svensson did suggest that Okami Wii "was never predicated on reaching the sales of the PS2, so from a profitability standpoint, [Capcom is] relatively pleased with where it’s at and where it’s going."

Though Okami has not seen widespread retail success, Svensson reports that there is "slow, steady business" with the game, proving its staying power in the retail space. Svensson went on to say that he believes the "legs" Okami is exhibiting "is due to word of mouth from fans like all of you," and he urges players to "recommend it" if they "think it’s something [their] friends should be playing"

No wonder, the game has been released on the PS2 way earlier.

I'm one of those jerks. I fully intend to buy it, but I'm only about an hour into Twilight Princess and I didn't want to buy a game that's so similar until I finish that.

I haven't bought it. "Epic" (aka excessively long) games have never appealed to me much, and even less so now with the amount of time I have. Zelda is about the only series that I can handle and even then it takes me ages to finish a game.

I took 3 months to finish this game. I loved it. If you can handle Zelda, you can handle Okami and practically love it more.

I bought it but haven't even cracked the wrapper yet.  (I'm not part of the problem!  Hoo-ray!!)

I plan to play this between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I'm one of them. I played it on ps2 and thought I drug out too long and the combat bordered on bad. It does the zelda thing very well except that bug may be the most obnoxious character ever created.
Whenever I go back to play okami I end up playing wind waker.

The combat was a real shame. It started out better than TP but quickly got way too easy. At least TP restricted you to 4 healing potions, in Okami I had tons of every healing item (at least 10 of the ones that restore all HP plus countless of smaller ones) by the time I beat the game just from drops and treasure.

I have it for Wii and PS2.  So I'm doing my part.

However, I don't think Capcom did their part in marketing the Wii version.  The most publicity the game ever received was when they messed up and put the IGN watermark on the cover by accident.

From my point of view having bought and played the Wii version of Okami, the game is massively over-rated with some of the most tedious combat I've ever seen in an adventure game...but it is a decent game.  Still, Capcom has a great deal of nerve to just come out and say that they expect us to do their job for them and shill a game they can't be bothered to actually advertise themselves.  They couldn't even be bothered to help the development team put the game together from the remnants of Clover, or for that matter even pull up their OWN copy of the concept art used for the game's cover.  Capcom is practically demanding that we help their game sell, yet they've put no effort into this project whatsoever so why should we care?  It's not like Capcom will ever do another one, not with the mere "slow, but steady" sales this game has.

I played this game loved it very quickly then hated it even faster. The blur is just too much (and i'm not going to attempt it on my bro's 50 inch TV at 60hz/576i).

That a port of a game that's released a year later and on a console that, while insanely popular, doesn't have nearly the installed base as the PS2 outsold the original, even if only by a little, is pretty impressive.
