Nintendo Media Summit 2010
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:43:33 PM »
We all know how Nintendo doesn't really like to participate in other people's events other than E3, so could this summit be their Pre GDC/Pre E3 lineup showcase?
Nintendo of America is having a Media Summit on Feb. 24th in SF
Nintendo of Europe is having a Media Summit on Feb. 25th

NoA & NoE are practically having a Media summit at the same day.

Official Nintendo Magazine is teasing something BIG coming in the next issue
and I believe NP and another Nintendo magazine are also hyping something coming up real soon.

What does Nintendo have up their sleeves? Are their NDA's involved?
Is NWR gonna give me their press pass so I can represent them at the event in SF?
I don't have an answer to any of the questions that I just posed.... but I can say for all of you wondering where to get tickets to board the HYPE Train, the line starts here.

ALL ABOARD!!!!!

I'm expecting announcements of new games and release dates for Apr. - EWii3 2010

What already been announced?
02/22/10        Endless Ocean™: Blue World       Wii
03/14/10        PokĂ©mon™ HeartGold Version       DS
03/14/10        PokĂ©mon™ SoulSilver Version       DS
03/28/10        WarioWare D.I.Y.™       DS
03/28/10        America's Test Kitchen: Let's Get Cooking       DS

So we are looking for dates on?
Metroid:Other M,
The Last Story (with a reveal?)
Xenoblade
Kirby Wii (it's still coming. Don't lose hope)
Zelda Wii (probably not till E3)
Zangeki no Reginleiv
Sin & Punishment 2
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (it's gonna have Sonic in it ;) )
Disaster: Day of Crisis
DSi XL
Golden Sun DS
Vitality Sensor
Fatal Frame IV (now that there is a translation, they will bring it over :P: : )
F-Zero
Kid Icarus
Pikmin 3
Nintencats
Pilotwings Wii
WiiHD

Got plans next Thursday? Washing your hair? Alphabeticising your record collection maybe? Or perhaps you had 'chisel the limescale off toilet bowl' pencilled in your diary? Well, we'd love to come and help out but unfortunately we've got plans. Big plans.

Yup, we're off to a secret location somewhere in London to check out a whole bunch of awesome, 100% super-secret Nintendo stuff. It promises to be exciting and suffice to say we're pretty psyched.

We know what a few of the things on show are going to be (no, I'm not telling), but there are still bits and bobs under wraps. So, two things: Firstly, cross 'chisel limescale off toilet bowl' out of your diary and replace it with 'keep eyes glued to ONM website'.

It's going to be exciting and no doubt Nintendo have some interesting things to show off, but remember that the really big stuff usually gets saved for E3. So don't come coming crying to us when there's no sign of Mother 4, okay! Because we all know how messy things can get when expectations get raised too high, don't we?

So this can be the Official thread for talking about anything and everything related to the Media Summit.
Speculation? Ok
Rumors? Ok
News Stories? Ok

I guess this year you get to do the Media Summit. I might be able to help a little but I might not.
Anyway I don't really get hyped up before the event. Maybe during or after.
Hope you can keep up with the Media Summit.
Do you know any places that will be covering this?

You can update your post, but I just wanted to post that ONM is continuing to hype the Media Summit as something pretty big.without it getting lost in the Rumor(& Speculation) thread.

I just looked through my topics and I did the Media Summit in 2008, GDC 2009, E3 2009 the sony, microsoft and 3rd partys conferences.

So no I didn't do last years media summit. So you can do it this year. You will probably be quicker.

Exact time. Are the NOA and NOE happening at the same time?
This info would be helpful.:)

If this event is for showing games and not announcing them, then I would like to see some more footage of Metroid Other M, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punushment 2, The Last Story, and XenoBlade.

Well, actually, I'm not sure if I want to know more about Metroid and Mario Galaxy 2. These games usually have great level designs which would be better left experienced when playing rather than watching them. Sin and Punishment 2 I want to see some footage of, to determine if it is something I might like. The only reason I have any interest in it is because it is a sequel to a Nintendo 64 game (that I have not played and do not own), which probably isn't a good reason. I like certain types of RPGs so I'd be interested in receiving more information on those two new ones, moreso about the gameplay than the story. Some RPGs can be really boring depending on the fighting system.

I don't know if this would be a time to announce release dates, but that would also be nice.

The game has been out in Japan since October, so there is plenty of gameplay footage already available (since it's unlikely Nintendo do any changes other than just translating).

Since this event isn't taking place in Japan and E3 is only a few months away, I wouldn't expect Zelda, Kirby, Pikmin 3 or anything that might be popular in Japan to be shown off here.  I get the feeling this event will be to announce things that will only have any significant in North America and Europe.

Because of this, I do expect Metroid: Other M to be shown off quite heavily with a new trailer and playable demo.  Since the game is scheduled for a Summer release in Japan, it'll probably be out in North America even earlier since every Metroid since the first Prime have been released in North America first.  And because Metroid is way more popular in America and Europe, it makes sense to give it a huge conference since 95% of it's sales will come from both of these territories.

And if the rumor about Sonic being in Mario Galaxy 2 is true, then I expect Nintendo to officially announce it here as well.  Since Sonic is only popular in North America and Europe, it'd also make sense to hold a big conference in both territories to announce something like this as well.  This would also explain why there's no conference in Japan since like the Metroid series, the Japanese don't care about Sonic either and so holding a big conference to announce him wouldn't make sense over there.

Plus I could also see Retro's new game being unveiled here.  Considering Retro's history and the people who work there, I'm going to guess Retro's new game is probably an FPS of some kind.  If that is indeed the case, it'll be a game that has no appeal in Japan either, making it rather ideal to be shown in a North America/Europe event as well.  And since Prime 3 came out in August 07, I'd quite possible Retro's new game could be ready to release in the coming months.

I think we realize that Sega is very eager to do whatever it can to revive the name of Sonic in the mind of gamers and Nintendo is wanting to bring the Sega faithful on over to the Wii and push 3D Mario into the sales spotlight next to NSMBW.

That is why we entertain this rumor as plausible if not likely. The HYPE TRAIN will continue to grow even with your skepticism. It can't be derailed.

If Nintendo does reveal a new Eternal Darkness at the conference, it better begin with Reggie walking out on stage holding a leash that's connected to a collar worn by Denis Dyack who's walking on all fours barking like a dog.  Reggie needs to then say "Who's become who's b!tch now Dennis".

Licking their wounds.

Since Microsoft won't publish the rest of the Too Human series and likely no other publisher will either, I'm sure they're weighing their options. Too Human is probably dead. Revisiting Eternal Darkness is an option but they'd have to convince Nintendo to give a sh*t about a cult game that will probably bomb on the Wii.

It isn't hilarious to me. I feel sorry for them...

I was never a Sonic/Sega fan, and I'm glad it was Sega that was forced out of the market instead of Nintendo, but still... I feel their pain. It would take a cold-hearted S.O.B. to be delighted by their sadness. I wish nothing but the best for the Sonic franchise and its fans.

Sonic's fanbase is them vs. Sega Of Japan. SoJ doesn't care for Sonic (since he was never popular in his home country to begin with) and the fanbase always calls them out. They just don't care.

Well if that game is going to be given a western release, I'd imagine this will be the place it's announced.  Since it was just released in Japan and these conferences are meant to address upcoming games for the North America and Europe markets, this is the time to do it.

If it's not announced this week then I'm afraid it will never leave Japan.

Rogue Squadron coming to Wii? could it be a remake?
http://www.game.co.uk/Wii/Rogue-Squadron/~r346565/

Is this what Factor 5 has been working on?
Is this something that could be revealed at the upcoming Media Summit or merely a mistake on the part of Game UK?

So, this week. What's occurring? Well, only the Nintendo Summit that threatens to blow our tiny minds with awesome revelations. We mentioned on our Twitter feed a week or so ago that it threatens to be "better than Nintendo's last two E3s glued together". Naturally, our comment has caused all manner of internet speculation, as all good comments should do, but we're not kidding when we say that you can expect some Very Big News in the next few days.

I changed my mind; they'd better not announce New Play Control Pikmin 2 at this thing. I just bought an import copy of it last night and I'd be pissed if it turned out to be coming out here. My new wish is for a DSi Storage Solution.

This might not be important, but NAL (Nintendo of Australia) has their Media Summit tomorrow. Does NWR have someone going there? I have no idea, but you should be able to follow @Serrels on twitter as he says that he will be "twittering the crap out of it if anyone is interested". He is with ONM Australia.

It's supposedly NDA'd so lets see what he leaks if there is anything worth leaking.

p.s. Wed. Summit supposedly has a 12hr NDA on it so don't expect any "official" info until 9 pm pst. (unless we get a leak)

Ok seriously guys, sonic in galaxy 2?  It's just a gigantic impossibility for so many reasons, mostly gameplay construction, they'd have to make an entirely new set of levels for sonic.  They'd never do it.... ever.  Ever.  We were lucky enough to get luigi in galaxy to begin with.  They don't throw enough of a bone to their own characters to ever give two sh'ts about sega's, and then actually put him in a real mario game.  Maybe I've been duped and this was always a joke, but Sonic Team killed sonic forever.  Deadsies.

Optimistically, Nintendo will address one of their major franchises that hasn't seen a Wii iteration yet.  Probably, they'll give harder release dates for Galaxy and Metroid, and lets you know that Zelda has a release date of neverE10^9. (Yes, Giganever).  Impossibly, Nintendo ever does anything more with sonic than throw him on a track to perpetuate the ridiculous notion that he could be beaten by slow-ass, fat-ass, plumber-cracked mario.

I don't want to see Sonic in a main-line Mario game for the simple reason that it would taint both franchises. It would be like Captain Kirk going through an inter-dimensional rift and finding himself on Tattooine, or some weird crap like that. Sure, it might sound good superficially to fans of either the star trek and/or the Star Wars franchise if Chewbacca started ripping limbs off Klingons, but in the long term it would destroy both franchises.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "jumping the shark"? That's exactly what would happen if Sonic appeared in a real Mario game (or vice versa). A line would have been crossed that could never be undone, no matter how hard we would wish it would be.

Having Sonic crossover with Mario in some Casual Olympics crap or in a party game or smash bros. is one thing, but for God's sake let's leave it at that.

I disagree, on the grounds that Chewbacca ripping limbs off Klingons is AWESOME, but also because George Lucas already destroyed Star Wars, and Star Trek Enterprise damn near did the same for Star Trek.

The reason people would like to see Sonic appear in Mario Galaxy is because it means we'd finally see a 3D Sonic done right.  Now nobody is believing that it's really going to happen, but it doesn't stop people from wishing it would.

Plus if it was true, I don't see why some of you are so against the idea.  According to the rumor it said that Sonic would only be playable in the Green Hill Galaxy.  Since the average Galaxy in Mario Galaxy had about 6-7 stars in it, this means Sonic would only be playable for a small part of the game.  In other words, Sonic role in the game would be nothing more then a cameo really.

I have always wished Nintendo bought Sega because it would add a ton of franchise potential to the Nintendo line-up. I really miss the Nintendo/Rare combo, and the thing thats better than Nintendo/Rare would Be Nintendo/Sega. Rare made a couple of franchises, but none of them are prolific to hold a console on their own. Sega on the other hand has held consoles on their own. Nintendo has always been criticzed for relying to much on old franchises, but if they did buy Sega they could rely on old Franchises that are different :P. If Nintendo bought Sega i could see Yuji Naka, and Yu Sazuki knocking on Sega's door again, I can also see them managing the brands and franchises better. Not only that it would fill some holes in Nintendo's lineups. Sega has the shooting, racing, and fighting games Nintendo doesn't. They would also become exclusive. If Nintendo had a drought in Mario releases there would be Sonic releases to back it up. Maybe, just maybe those franchises could be revived in quality too. I really liked my Dreamcast. Plus i want to finally kill Land Di!!! The liklihood of Nintendo buying Sega in then next couple of days is zip, Nintendo doesn't do the thing people expect or wish for. I kinda expect this to be a summit with more of the same honestly.

So we get Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2 and Metroid: Other M all within a month basically from May-June.  Oh yeah, this confirms Zelda Wii is coming out in November this year.

Not to mention since all this games that were shown at last years E3 are being released before or a little after E3 this year, it means E3 2010 will be filled with pretty much 95% new content.  I mean, besides Xenoblade, everything else from last years E3 has now been given a release date in North America now going up until the end of Q2.  Meaning we now have no idea what will be released in Q3 and Q4, except for Zelda which is now a lock for Q4.

Ugh, is the free Nintendo points really for preordering at Gamestop?  I think I hate that store so much I may actually fulfill the "you can't pay me to shop there" saying and buy the game somewhere else.

I believe someone else pointed out elsewhere that you can get a $10 credit for pre-ordering Tri on Amazon. That's double what you get at GS and it doesn't violate your moral code ;)

This ridiculous hate GamStop gets needs to stop. I swear that half the people online who bash them do it only because it's "cool" to do so (like bashing Microsoft, calling Nintendo kiddy, etc.) They are not a bad store.

Some more details from a Live Blog on SMG2 Demo:
Quote
Yoshi! As seen in the trailer -- I know this isn't new, but it's still awesome. Mario rides around on Yoshi. You move with the analog stick still. The pointer controls Yoshi's tongue, which can stretch all over the place and interact with objects. Yoshi eats a blimp fruit, changes into an aqua blue variation, and then floats through the air, his mouth a makeshift exhaust. This is very cool stuff. Mario and Yoshi are flying around a tree-world. Now the angle has shifted to reveal a 2D platformer. Seems like there's going to be much more of this in the sequel -- very welcomed.

They are not a bad store.
Yes they are.  Their employees are jackasses more often than not.  Their customers are just as bad.  They routinely overcharge for DS games and Wii peripherals.  They try to upsell you on products and services you don't want.  When you say you don't want them the employees don't take a hint and keep pushing.  I hate the store and only shop there as a last resort.

This is how 95% of all chains in America operate. It's really not a big deal. I like video games. I also like low prices. Sometimes Gamestop has the lowest price, which is why I sometimes shop there guilt free. Hating Gamestop is trendy and silly. I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of those that refuse to shop there shop at other stores who adopt the same practices.

Best Buy and Target employees don't have a personality.  They're register monkeys.  I'll take that any day over an asshole GameStop employee.  They might ask me if I want to sign up for a store credit card or an Entertainment Weekly subscription but when I say no they don't ask again.

I haven't checked prices at stores lately because usually I'll just buy stuff online, but there have been several DS games that sold for $29.99 at most major retailers that GameStop tried selling for $34.99.  Canvas Curse is one that comes to mind.  GameStop also sells both the Wii Zapper and MotionPlus for $24.99 even though every other store on the face of the earth sells them for $19.99.

I have been in many different GameStop's and interacted with hundreds of employees, the number who were bad or jackasses was like 1% (lower than most retail stores i've been in). The number of bad customers is lower (the ones who are are usually like high school kids, which is why I try to avoid GameStop in the afternoons since that is when they are usually there. From my experience, most Wii and DS accessories are about the same as other retail stores. I don't know when the last time you were in a GameStop, but the employees don't "push" anything on you (they ask me ONE time if I want to buy a protection plan, I say "no" and they don't try to push anything else. Again, this is about the SAME that most retail stores do). Maybe people should actually try going to the store instead of basing thei opinions on old info or what they hear on the Internet, and avoid the bad ones. As for the Wii Zapper, what are you smoking? I know the MSRP is $20, but most stores (not just GameStop) sell it for $25, including Best Buy and Barnes & Noble.

I see D_Average pretty much answered this already too.

They charge 54.99 for the pink and blue remote+motion plus set too.

With the exception of one gs (and a second one that more recently went bad with newer turnover) I have not had good experiences at gs. So I just stopped going there. I don't hate them because they are cool, I don't even really 'hate' them. I just find myself as a customer dissatisfied with my experiences there overall so I choose to take my business elsewhere. Wal-Mart, Fred Meyers, most Game Crazies and local indie shops along with my personal favorite -Amazon- give me what I want with less hassle and less issues.

~~Back on topic~~
I notice that most if not all of these games were previously known about. There were no new reveals. So GDC and even more so E3 are going to be huge.

Outside of a few 'Japan-only-at-this-point' titles there is almost no other game announced to be on the horizon. Very exciting and I hope that excitement and expectation is met in some way.

To break down the new SMG2 trailer:

0:00-0:12 - The game's logo has changed a little. You know what else has changed? The music is fully orchestrated. Thank you, EAD Tokyo.
0:13-0:15 - Graphics looking as good as ever, possibly better than the first game, though it's hard to tell.
0:16-0:18 - This platforming concept was in the E3 trailer, but it still looks cool.
0:19-0:33 - Drill item in action again. It can both go through the planets and burrow inside of them for secrets. The boss seems to bear a resemblance to Megaleg.
0:34-0:44 - That dragon is really big. It reminds me of Fracktail from Super Paper Mario; I wonder if you can climb around on it.
0:45-0:52 - Dry Bones and Boos are messing with the ground you can walk on. Looks dangerous.
0:53-1:22 - It's Yoshi! He can flutter. He can turn orange and run fast. He can turn blue and float. His tongue appears to have quite a few functions, including grappling and pulling objects. The pointer seems to be used to aim the things Yoshi has swallowed as well (like firing Bullet Bills into a giant mech). And hey, it's Bowser Jr, back for more.
1:23-1:35 - Everything is really big. The angry Wigglers in particular are very menacing when enlarged. Good to see some more 2D sections.
1:36-1:49 - Gravity puzzles are being taken to the next level, from the looks of things. Did you see the crazy gravity on that cylinder? Brain-bending.
1:50-2:05 - I'm not sure, but it would appear that Yoshi may actually stay with you after completing a level.

Must. Have. Now.

In her book A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf wrote this of Jane Austen:

Here was a woman about the year 1800 writing without hate, without bitterness, without fear, without protest, without preaching.  That was how Shakespeare wrote.

What are the chances that something will be announced here that wasn't covered in the US summit?

I would have thought all the big stuff would be at the US summit.  I would love to be wrong though.  There must be some reason for all this stuff.

I feel bad for the Nintendo Life people that booked a Hotel an hour away and drove to the Summit for something Nintendo could have sent them an e-mail about.
At least they get to play some Metroid: OM

That's the game.  Was it really worth organizing 3 big conferences around the world to announce stuff they could have done online.  No bombs (bullet bills for BnM) were dropped.  That seems like such a HUGE waste of money.

Yeah it is over. So it seems that the releases are close to North America dates which is good.

So I think that is it as far as Media Summits goes for today. Gonna look around for impressions then I will post them in their respective topics.

Very odd. Should have saved all this stuff for GDC or E3. Though this does give hopes for new and exciting stuff to be revealed there. It's like the field has been cleared of peripheral stuff so all that's left will be major news.

He's just trying to save him money. I'm surprised Kairon isn't sincerely greatful cuz now he can read those books now instead of waiting.

But I'm already planning on buying a complete Jane Austen set... and I already have multiple versions of most Jane Austen movies.

...and I have a Jane Austen action figure...

so... um... this is about added value to me, not reading books for the first time ever...

I find all of this very disturbing, especially that you own an action figure of her.

I was going to say no male should be that obsessed with Jane Austen, but now that I think about it I'm pretty sure no female should be either. Please seek help, Kairon, before its too late!
is your sanity...

Ugh, is the free Nintendo points really for preordering at Gamestop?  I think I hate that store so much I may actually fulfill the "you can't pay me to shop there" saying and buy the game somewhere else.

This ridiculous hate GamStop gets needs to stop. I swear that half the people online who bash them do it only because it's "cool" to do so (like bashing Microsoft, calling Nintendo kiddy, etc.) They are not a bad store.
I hate them because they rip people off with their used game stance and their inability to keep games in stock for people that don't preorder. I hate shopping there because they try and force me to buy used games at the ripped off prices, preorder things, and buy strategy guides.

Ok, i made a response up there without reading the rest of the thread.  I don't want to derail so if anyone wants to start the gamestop debate, they can either PM me, find the old thread, or make a new one.

I also want to make it clear that I'm not making any case against employees.  I fully realize there are probably plenty of great people working for them out there.  The problem is the AWFUL company policy that forces employees to do things I hate to keep their jobs.  That's why I hate the store.  The company itself is trash.

TJ, I believe I remember reading somewhere that you are from my hometown. Which ones do you shop at?  Marketplace Mall?  There are two stores in that mall.  I usually have an alright experience at the ex-EB Games one (Near bonton) but hate the other one.  If you aren't actually from my home town, ignore me. :)
