Super Mario Kart Mafia
« on: June 13, 2009, 07:29:45 PM »
Welcome to Super Mario Kart Mafia!

For the uninitiated, Super Mario Kart Mafia is a dramatic shift away from the typical format of Mafia games (itself the basis of Paintball Mafia). First of all there is no actual mafia team; effectively both teams are townies. All members will be assigned an item to use according to the rules. These items will be replaced the next day upon their use.

All players start with 3 points.
To die, you must be voted out in the day actions or you must have your points depleted by being attacked by other players to zero.

All players are effectively townies; however they are affiliated to different teams. All players will have assigned items that are replaced the next day following its use (except the Green Team).

There are three teams:
Red Team
Blue Team
Green Team

The Red and Blue Teams will have equal amounts of players, while the Green Team has a smaller number of players. To compensate for a smaller team, all actions the Green Team make takes priority over all others.
As the green team has priority their action would be placed first regardless of whether it really was or not. So, for instance, if a green player and red player remained and both has 1 point remaining, and they both fired red shells at each other then the red player would die first.

For either the Red or Blue Teams to win, the opposing team plus the Green Team must die. For the Green Team to win, they must defeat all the members of either team (only one team).

To clarify:
Nobody will know who other members are (except for Green Team, who will know other Green players).
For the Red Team to win, they must defeat half the members of the Blue Team and AT LEAST HALF OF the Green Team.
For the Blue Team to win, they must defeat half the members of the Red Team and AT LEAST HALF OF the Green Team. (So, if the opposing team has 10 this must be reduced to 5 for Red/Blue to win)
For the Green Team to win, they must defeat half the members of the Red Team OR the Blue Team. (So, for example if Red Team has 10, Green need to reduce that number to 5 for Green to win)

Green must maintain at least half of their team, and not fall below this. I.E If they had 10, then 6 is the minimum.

ITEMS:

BOTH TEAMS:
Red Shell - Removes one point from nominated person. Can be used offensively or defensively.

Blue Shell - Removes one point from all opposing team. All weapons ineffective except Star and POW.
Banana - Protects against all offensive items except blue shells and POW.

Mystery Box - Removes one point from nominated person. Can only be used offensively.

Coin - Restores one point to nominated person. Same day use. Alive players only.

Identifier - Allows user to find out who has what type of item. (e.g. "Who has the Blue Shell?"). The risk is if you use the item, you will have your answer and you will switch team.

Cloud - Removes 2 points from owner unless one point is used to transfer to someone else. Can only be transferred once. Cloud ‘attacks’ after second day.

Oil Spill – Randomises the points of 2 people.
Lightning - Cancels all votes on opposing team (can also cancel green votes), except for one person.

The Green Team will have 4 items for the entire game:
Boo
POW
2 x Red shells

The items (and green team requirements) may change depending on user signup.

The game will start next next monday, June 22.

As i'm in the UK i cannot directly host, hence i require someone to call start/end of days. This has to be done on time. Would anybody like to volunteer for this? (EDIT: Khush will take care of this)

Sounds more like a Mario Party Mafia with all of the randomness. But if last game is any indication then I'm gonna need luck to win. This could be interesting.

Totally in. And if characters apply to this, then sign me up as Birdo. Bet you didn't see that one coming.

Are we threatening to BANDWAGON me?!?! ;)

Has anyone even successfully bandwagoned me to the hangman's noose? I think every time I've either been offed by the mafia, chosen my death for a greater cause, or won a game.

This is probably asking for an early vote out but that's OK. I'll tackle any challenge head-on. Even if said challenge is a ton heavier than me and will crush me in an instant.  ;D

Yeah, you might be a target since you were the sole winner of last game. One thing I've noticed from looking over the old games is that the winners tend to be the ones targeted first the next time.

But the reason I'm after you is because you are responsible for all three of my losses. And so all of my items will be coming for you, regardless of which team you are on.  ;D

Yay! All is right with thatguy on your side.

It was actually funny on ACCF the other night whenI had to try and explain your name to Djunknown.

He asked me "who's Jason, he from NWR?"
and I'm all, "yeah, he's thatguy on there"
he goes "what guy?"
"thatguy"
"what guy"
"thatguy is his name!"

It was straight out of a Hardy Brother skit, "Who's One First?"
Priceless I say  :D

Also, I don't see a problem with you being the Ice Climbers. After all, they crossed over three DK characters in Mario Kart Wii so I say the whole Smash Cast should be permitted.
But I guess I'll leave the final verdict up to the GM, Mr. Plugabugz.

Hm, but Donkey Kong was a spin-off of Mario (technically Mario Brothers was a spin-off of Donkey Kong but we won't go there...) and lives in the same universe so characters created in Donkey Kong games could still be considered Mario characters.

Yeah, but Starfox and F-zero are in the same world, since they use the same technology, so by default, it seems the Ice Climbers are in, and they just need to pick out a double dash car, or make their own, in that style.

Make it like a bike with one of those side compartment/buckets. Then they could use a power where they break off from each other and string out a long tether they could use to clothesline people.

Similar to how DaaMaan64 handled it with Mario Kart Mafia, its just literally call the end of day and open the new thread and then hand over to me.

Plugabugz are the items team specific? I know in the original game that was one way that the Blue team deduced Red and Green teams.

The items will be specific as before. I will be updating the list above now to accommodate this.

Though I never noticed it before, Birdo has a huge diamond ring on her finger. Is it bling or is she engaged?

While I'd love to stall the game for Spak to play, is it entirely fair to hold everything several weeks for one person? I guess it depends on what Plugabugz says. Though, do we even know when Spak will be able to get back on again? It could be longer than the 1st.

First off, Dry Bones is dead. It doesn't have any physical characteristics which point to which sex it might have been. Just pointing that out.

How could you not notice Birdo’s ring with how huge it is? The ring is kind of a mystery, it just appeared one game without any explanation. The game was Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour where a lot of little alterations to Birdo took place, such as adding the yellow pads on his feet, his more upright stance, etc. Now obviously these types of things were added because the GameCube allowed for more detailed graphics, and they took advantage of that. But you see a ring like that and you have to wonder what its significance could be within the context of the game.

There’s no official answer given of course, so it is up for interpretation based on what little we know. It could just be Birdo bought the ring for himself; after all, a ring like that isn’t dissimilar from something a transvestite would have on. But we also know that Yoshi and Birdo are a couple as evidenced by the Japanese Mario Kart Double Dash!! website, where the description for Birdo translates to something along the lines of “Appears to be Yoshi’s girlfriend, but is actually his boyfriend?!†It isn’t a wedding ring because Yoshi isn’t also wearing a ring, but it could be an engagement ring or maybe just a gift. We’ll never know for sure.

LOL, I knew Yoshi and Birdo were tennis buddies, but I didn't know they were that serious.

Do we even have clarification outside of the cartoon that Yoshi is male or female or could Yoshi be genderless? Afterall, Yoshis reproduce asexually. Like Godzilla.

Also, why did we have to clarify Dry Bones' lack of a clear gender?

Yoshi is an enigma. Officially he is always referred to as a male... though we have never seen the female of his species (there is also no official word that "Yoshi" is the name of the species, same with Birdo). How can we be so sure they exist?

There is no evidence that Yoshi reproduces asexually. Yoshi lays eggs after he eats something, but these eggs don't contain baby Yoshi's and are probably excrement. We've never seen Yoshi lay an egg which hatches a baby dinosaur.

Personally I think Yoshi is a hermaphrodite. Seems to be the most logical fit based on what little we know.

Also, why did we have to clarify Dry Bones' lack of a clear gender?
Because you should know me better than that by now.

I know, I just wanted to know it if was just you being you or because I referred to Dry Bones as a guy a few posts back.

I still think Yoshi's reproduce asexually. Like Godzilla. Yoshi was probably conceived as a cartoony version of Godzilla. Yoshi is more dragon than dinosaur, though. Breathes fire and can fly and all that.

I don't know what evidence there is to support Yoshi being asexual, but there's also nothing against it either.

Yoshi has been officially referred to as a dinosaur, and he can't breathe fire or fly on his own. Those are an effect of swallowing a certain colour of turtle shell.

In English. Original Japanese referres to him as a dragon.

Also, the Yoshi coins in Mario World are referred to as dragon coins.

And the smash ball gives Yoshi those powers as well. Whether they come by special power or not they are traits of his...

I talked to her, but do not know how much I am permitted to share because I didn't think to ask.
There are certain things going on in 'The Real World' that need her attention right now.

I'll ask her if I'm permitted to share it with you all.

Now that I would like to see. There was hardly any of that in the three games I played, and some of those who tried were out early. I guess it makes you a target? I don't know why though... keep the entertainers around and vote out the more inactive players!

Signups are now closed at 13 people. I am preparing everything now.

I will be opening the Day 1 thread in the funhouse shortly and will PM Pale to get mod superpowers and have the thread moved into the correct place.
Closing time, for today only, is Midnight EST tomorrow (7am GMT). Moving forward, closing time will always be Midnight EST on that day. Khush will close the thread, and reopen and subsequently close from then onwards.

Given the numbers are double than before, I will introduce one rule to keep the game fair: For Red/Blue to win, HALF THE OPPOSING TEAM MUST BE UNABLE TO PLAY BY BEING VOTED OUT OR DEPLETE THEIR POINTS TO ZERO.
