An upcoming shipment of the NES Classic to North America may be the system's last.

Nintendo confirmed the discontinuation in a statement to IGN today, and that final shipments would be sent to retail in Nintendo of America territories throughout April.

“Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

The special NES-shapped Classic Controllers that were sold alongside the system have also been discontinued, though they have been sold out in many places since launch.

I wanted to buy an NES Mini for my dad. As a cheesy way to thank him for introducing me to video games all those years back. I never got the chance to because the system was never in stock for more than a few minutes.

This reminds me made of what they said about Super Mario All-Stars for Wii a few years back (which is back again in stores today) as well as the first wave of SSB amiibo. Unless they have a huge cache of stockpiled units ready to last for years to come, this is unlikely to be truly permanent.

The last thing I can recall seeing an explicit discontinuation announcement from NoA was Metroid Prime Trilogy, so look forward to buying the games as a pack for $60 in five years or so.

I figured this thing was going to be limited because of the VC (and probably now because of piracy on it), though I did think they'd have made more units for holiday 2016.

Nintendo really are dumbasses sometimes.  I have never EVER seen one of these in real life.  The demand for this greatly exceeds the supply and yet Nintendo is discontinuing it before everyone that wants one can get one?  Ridiculous!

I get that Nintendo wants to avoid a Wii U situation where no one bought the thing and they were seemingly going off the initial manufacturing run for the entire life of the system but they have repeatedly underestimated demand for damn near everything aside from the games themselves.  Shouldn't they realize that they're not getting this right at some point?  Of course I could have said that last sentence at any point in the last 20 years or so and it would make sense.

There was a rumor going around Scandinavian websites in February that NES Classics' were being discontinued there but NoE squashed those rumors. Of course, things can change quickly.
