Hmm, I have a question. Does this have any kind of 2 player function? The official Sonic site says so apparently. But I havent heard any news. IGNGC.com says it has a 2 player fuction as well, other than where you can use Tails with player 2, what else is there?

I'm making this the official discussion now. -Bloodworth

Im not sure, but ive heard bad things about this game. Supposedly its WORSE than the dreamcast version. I dont know how thats possible but thats what ive heard. The game gear games packed in with it are the best thing about it IMO. But i havent played it yet have i.

The only good Game Gear Sonic games I've played on the GG are Sonic CHaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift 2, Tails Adventure, and in some cases, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The rest of them are crap. With Sonic 2 being the worst of them. I wonder if they put in any kind of 2 player for Sonic Drift, if not, I wouldnt be suprised....

But as for the game being 'worse' its probably 'as buggy' since they failed to fix any of the problems from the original, and even though its at 60 frames, it still bogs down. Previous Dreamcast builds had the game running at 60 frames a second, but even then the framerate wasnt rock solid.

If only Sonic Team had time back then, and when they gave a damn now.

I got all 130 emblems in 30 hours.  You can play as Metal Sonic in Trial mode after getting all the emblems.

I just need to beat all the missions and beat Metal Sonic's trial.

Some one said there is a speicial FMV, but I am not sure about that.

I got my SADX the day it came out and today I unlocked Metal Sonic, its much better then that blasted Green Hill in SA2.

As for the game getting a 5.0 that is just super unfair. I give it a 8.0 becuase I had so much fun with it.
I don't know how they can give SA2B a 6.9 and give this game which happens to be at least 10 times better 5.0.

Unlike SA2, the shooting and treasure hunting stages are very well designed, much easier, and much more fun. Fishing is very easy unless your trying to get all the emblems and Amy is just a much slower Sonic.  The running stages aren't as big as something you would find in a Mario game but they aren't nearly as linear or short as the ones in SA2 and most are at least twice the size.

My main problems are the bugs, and the camera. But unlike SA2 if the camera gets caught behind a wall you can change the standard camera to  the Free Camera and it will be free from the wall. It controls a bit like Sunshine and the WW except it doesn't zoom in or out. The voice acting isn't anything to boast about at all but its not the worst thing in the world ether. Characters like Tails and Amy are much more tolarable in this game rather then SA2  IMO.

I recomend this game to any Sonic fan. But maybe I love this game so much because I never really played it befor on the DC. And for  $40 it was cheaper to buy that instead of a DC and the origonal.

Thanks for that, Caterkiller.
Some quick questions, if you don't mind!

Is the original Japanese voice track still in the game? And how do you go about unlocking the Game Gear games? Are they in full screen, or what?
Thanks.

The origonal Japanese voices are there.

The Game Gear games are full screen unless you play 2 players. But in 2 players its not split screen, both players have their own screen side by side, its not full screen.

Ugh, believe me, I tried Sonic Spinball for Game Gear. NEVER EVER touch this game.

Oh, and there wasnt any 2 player to speak of in that game.

But Sonic Drift 1 & 2 did have 2 player, so theres SA1's Kart mini game right there =P

Did they remove the GG games that didnt make it to the US?

Yeah, I've played SS on Game Gear, it is rather horrible! But still, so was the Genesis/Mega Drive version
And I could of sworn there was 2-player in the GG SS, not like, on the same screen, as in taking turns..

I'm pretty sure they've got all the GG Sonic's in there. Including Tails' Adventure and Sky Patrol. Dunno if they made it to the US? They were released in Europe for a VERY short amount of time.

If he has SA2B he must get this game, just so he can see how terrible part 2 really is.

I've unlocked Tails Sky Patrol and so far its the best GG Sonic game I ever played. Though its not really a Sonic game at all it just has Tails slaped in there with a completely different play style.

No way! There has to be some games that work in a 2 player mode fashion. Just unlock one of the Sonic Drift games and try to go to 2 player mode. It should work.

Also, its kinda cool that you can also play the games side by side, ven though they're seprate.

I am getting this game soon for one reason: I didnt get to play the game much when I had the DC version. Here's why I didnt get to play it much: The discs I bought were part of those that had defects (Sega and other companies had games when the DC came out that had a manufacturing defect that caused a number of games not to load. Sonic Adventure 1 was one of those titles). I took back both discs years ago only to get another one that was in the same condition. I returned it and gave up. I didnt lose any money, but gave up on the game. It will be so sweet to finally get to play the game and not get a "Please Insert Game Disc" message.

I have always liked Sonic, and I like this game, too, but I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2: Battle more.  My main gripe is the irritating, problematic camera.  The wandering around in Station Square could completely go, too.  I just feel that SA2 flowed better.  Again, I am not saying that I dislike the game, but I do wish I could wave some sort of magic wand over it to change a few things.

Sonic 2 is even buggier and more frustrating than Sonic Adventure itself. With a screen thats way too small for its own good. You're making a billion trail-and-miss jumps in this game, not to mention some parts like the handglider parts are needlessly complicated. And sometimes Sonic refuses to Jump when you press the button. And this is Sonic 2, how come Sonic can spindash in the Genesis version but NOT the Game Gear version. I doubt they bothered to fix any of those problems, so....meh.

I don't know why all professional reviewers are giving this game bad reviews. I picked it up and have hardly noticed the big gripes they had. My framerate rarely slows down, never below 45 frames per second. My camera is rarely stuck on walls, and is generally easily un-stuck when it is. I also have no problem with the voice acting. The big problem for me is the "dubbing" of the voice onto the characters moving mouth. It was horrendous on DC, and was never addressed.

The Game Gear Sonic and Sonic 2 were in development at the same time. They were being developed the same time Sonic 2 was getting the finishing touches on Genesis. They never added the spin dash to either GG version because they had started them when Sonic was finished on Genesis, and that never featured it. Tails as an after thought on the GG Sonic 2. He wasn't even playable.

The spin dash, AND a new super boost were then added to the next GG Sonic game, Sonic Chaos. This new type of speed boost never made it into a Genesis Sonic, however.

Heh.  I was just reading the review on Gamespot.  I actually burst out laughing when I read this part.

but once you realize that most of the Sonic Game Gear games weren't all that great to begin with--and that some of them actually have some slowdown issues--your interest in collecting enough emblems to unlock all of them will diminish.

That has got to be the saddest thing I have ever heard.  Not being able to run a GameGear game properly on GameCube is just inexcusable.

No, the Game Gear games always had slowdown. The limitations of an 8-Bit hand held. Some levels in Sonic 2 featured a mass of explosions, and you'd get dreaded flicker and slowdown. Sonic Chaos was often too much for the poor little thing to handle, as they tried to push silicon graphics on the Game Gear and Master System.

It's perfect emulation. I'd actually hate Sega if they fixed it
I'm strange like that.

I could have sworn I clicked on a GCN l2 launch topic.  Oh well.  Sonic Chaos on GG was a lot of fun, the problem for me was that it was too easy.  A friend of mine owns all of the sonic games for GG, so I have played them all.  I like most of them except sonic 2, I hate it.  I dealt with the slowdown then, and on a TV screen, it likely looks a bit better than the screen that shunned all outside light.  A decent enough incentive to collect the medals.

I got the game on Friday, I've finished it with all characters, and now I'm doing second and third missions to earn those damn emblems. I REALLY want to unlock Sonic 2. My favorite of them all on Master System/Game Gear.

I was also surprised how Sega changed Sonic Chaos for the Game Gear. The Master System version had heaps better music.. And I could of swarn it was harder than that! I beat it in 15 minutes! Without Chaos Emeralds, that is

I must say, after playing my rental copy, this was seriously much much easier than Sonic Adventure 2. It is fun, yes. But I'm now disappointed. I might wait for this to be a budget title than get it right away, since I've nearly beaten the game. (I'm after the GG games y'know)

And that Mission Mode is glitchy, it seems as if missions wont start unless a different one in the level is finished. Bad Sonic Team! *Thwap*

Yeah, Sonic Adventure 2 offered a much better challenge. That last Sonic level with all the rail grinding in space was an utter nightmare for me.

I do enjoy the original, more though. The levels seem to be set out alot better. Plus the Knuckles' missions don't have that awful rap music going
