Imagine, visiting these forums ten years from now.
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:51:13 AM »
Hey all,

I normally don't browse these forums but today I decided to log in on a whim.  What came as a surprise to me was I signed up back in Feb. 2003.  How the time flies.  I first started reading NWR back in the N2000 days.  The place has certainly grown a lot over the years.  One thing that really impresses me today is the quality of the NWR "off the show floor" videos, especially for the handhelds.  They completely blow away, year after year, the videos from larger gaming sites.  The camera work is great and the crowd noise never seems to be a problem.

Good stuff. :)

I'm sure they'll be around, but I doubt they'll be making consoles anymore. Handhelds, for sure, but Wii U will probably be their last or second to last console in my opinion.

Ten years seems like a long time but that is only two console generations.  Realistically console generations will get longer so in ten years we'll probably be using the Wii U's successor but not the next one after it yet.

In ten years I'll be 41.  I can't imagine my life being the same as it is now.  Or, to put it another way, it better NOT be the same as it is now. ;)  I may be at a point where even if Nintendo gets their act together and turns things around that by the time it happens I'll be too old for it to really matter to me.  I can't imagine being as into videogames by then as I am now.  Or I'll be familiar with videogames but more from the perspective of my kids playing them.

2023 totally looks like some future sci-fi date when you see it typed out.  Yet I was always going to live to see dates like that unless something really tragic happened.

I've been on this version of the forums for 10 years already. I was on the previous versions going back to 1999. So 14 years total.  To put it into perspective, my roommates nephew was born that year as well, and is now as tall as me.  I'll probably get banned by some noob 21 year old moderator in 2020.

In 10 years I'll bave been on these forums for 24 years.

Now THAT makes me feel old.  I think I joined the old forum in 2001 at some point which would have made me 19 at the time.  In tens years I would be old enough to have been on the forum for more than HALF my entire life!

NWR would probably be more thrilled to have existed for over 20 years by that point.  Since the internet is relatively young it's hard to conceptualize a web site lasting so long.

One of the things that makes it interesting is being around to watch every little event as it unfolds and to have long term perspective on its implications. Take Wind Waker for instance. If you go back to one of my original posts about Wind Waker, I thought it was going to be a great game, but a failure for sure. Here we are 10 years later and they're coming out with an HD special edition and Fans are eating it up. Or things like Too Human, where the game was already a long in development much awaited psx game and was then slated for Gamecube, but turns out it wasa much panned xbox 360 game that did not live up to the Too Human hype thread.

Too Human and "realistic" Zelda were my two most anticipated Cube releases.  I figured that these games were essential for the Gamecube's longterm success as they bucked Nintendo's "kiddy" image that I felt was largely overblown and undeserved (today's Nintendo is actually more deserving of the term).

My reaction to Wind Waker was that I figured the game would be good BUT switching the graphic style on us was a HUGE PR mistake.  Zelda was one of the few N64 games that the Playstation crowd was legitimately jealous of and turning it into cartoon was destroying its marketability and seemed totally unnecessary since Zelda was already kid-friendly and Nintendo already had a bunch of more cartoony games and did not need more.  My optimism about the Cube's future took a nose dive after that and the whole incident really changed my image of Nintendo.

Too Human was the "Retro's new IP" of the day.  We all figured SK was working on it and it would come after Eternal Darkness.  And then we got Metal Gear Solid?  That turned out to be pretty good but a remake of a Playstation 1 game seemed like a completely waste of SK's talents as realistically any dev could have worked on that.  And all it was doing was delaying Too Human.

Notice that in both situations there was considerably hype for games with styles that were atypical of Nintendo.  You'll note that the "eh, it's just the same old franchises" reaction to E3 is based on a similar desire to experience quality Nintendo gameplay in new situations.

I was so angry initially about The Wind Waker's graphics after that awesome Spaceworld 2000 demo showing Link tossing his sword. I calmed down after seeing the trailer. Interestingly, The Wind Waker is the last Zelda game I really enjoyed and I'm looking forward to the HD version.

7 years as an active member but I remember finding this site through AOL way back in the planet n2000 days, I remember the launch of planet GameCube too, but at the time I wasn't really familiar with the forums. In fact I was new to the internet in general..

I remember it was during the PGC era that I stumbled upon the forums do to lack of news on the front page. Complete boredom and lack of interest on other sites made me lurk the forums a while but I didn't feel compelled to join because I felt I had nothing to add (and all the active posters at the time seemed like such a tight knit group of friends that I felt like an outsider trying to barge in to the cool kids hang out like "hey guys, I like Nintendo too, we should be friends!"

Then one fateful day in 2006 I just had to speak up.... I still haven't gotten around to editing that Great Wall of China Text like I promised I would...

Wowzers. In that time I feel like I accomplished a lot accept for the last couple years. Looking back on my previous posts... Good god I was an idiot. Never smoked weed once, never did any of the really harmful drugs and only got in 2 car accidents.

Get this! I've got Pokemon in my Black 2 that go back that far! Well March 2003 to be more accurate. Looking through my collection I noticed the original trainer was a high school friend of mine I haven't seen in almost a decade now.

I think I'll still enjoy Pokemon 10 years from now. By then my daughter may be in love with it, so it would naturally be easier for me to keep up with it. I've noticed the things that I really loved back then, or even as far back as preschool, I still love today. The Ninja Turtles, Nintendo, Wushu, Pokemon, animals. As an adult I feel like I can appreciate these things more so long as they stay true to themselves while evolving.

For years I've had this image of certain people.

Iansane: The most popular talk radio show in Los Angeles is the John and Ken Show. I absolutely love it, and John rants and raves about things that he is passionate about and the way he approaches certain topics I swear it's you talking. I always imagined is voice was yours and he looks like what I imagine you would when you get past 40 or closer to 50. The difference between him and you is that I agree with John 99% of the time, hahaha.

BlackNMild: Before I got to meet him I always imagine Rilo from The Cleavland show. It only popped into my head when Mop It Up commented on your voice. Saying something to the affect of "I wouldn't have imagined you sounded like that." I thought, "like what, sounded weird?" So then I envisioned he had an afro and talked like Rilo.

EASYCURE: I remember thinking(don't ask me why) this was a blond haired, blue eyed, chiseled athlete. Like he looked like Seigfried before he became Nightmare.

STEVEY: I always pictured him as some sort of Yiddish yodeling school boy who just made it to America from Gibbelshtoop. I don't know what that means and I've probably offended 2 groups. It's just what I thought.

PERM: I always thought you looked and talked like Disco Stu from the Simpsons, now I give that image to our real Disco Stu. I remember some animations or something like that from way back and I thought that must be what you looked like.

Mop It Up: Before I even saw her Mii, I always imagined she wore pink dresses with really tall cone hats like a wizard or something. I feel like I saw a picture like that by her some time ago. Only thing is I always associate your imaginary face with Birdo in my head.

Broodwars: Everytime I read his posts I think of Squidward but in the body of Mr Crocker. I don't know why it's just what comes to time. Not that you have a big nose or a hook head, they just come to mind.

Something tells me I was on forums previous these.  It's certainly been awhile.  My video game foruming began back in the glory days of IGN during Space World 2000.  Most of my time was spent there, especially when I began playing Phantasy Star Online with the IGN crew in early 2001.  Though I did frequent N2000 for news on the Big N. :)  It nice seeing NWR have a lack of a commercial feel as other sites became once they were gobbled up by larger corporations.

Other memories too.  I'm sure many of us were involved in some sort of gaming clan back in the day which have long since dissolved.  Mine was TFA, born out of PSO on IGN.  The guy who took the helm did try to make in into a gaming website but nobody came together and clicked like people did for NWR so it never went anywhere.  Our forums did manage to last until 2006-2007 but fell in to the abyss when I decided to stop paying for the web space.  Definitely a lot of changes over the years. :)
