Nintendo Gaming / 1upyours 8/18/06 Nintendo could sell Wii for $99
« on: August 18, 2006, 03:47:38 PM »
Among other debates over whether the system is a peripheral, is the Wii like the DS; will there be a Wii2 in two years (when MS launches their next console).

And what about MS' "first-person" controller?

The DS is like a semi-truck and the PSP is like a retarded kid on a bike

Nintendo Gaming / RE:What is Nintendo doing right or wrong with Wii?
« on: August 17, 2006, 08:08:15 PM »
This is all kind of late considering the rumors that the console is already in production but...

The Good:

The motion tech for the remote
Sleak casing
Neutral colors
Virtual Console
No multicore threading
Low development costs

The Bad:

$150 SD cards
No hard drive
No ethernet
No headset mic
No rechargeable battery and thus no charger cord to hook into the console to keep playing while you charge
Mario Galaxy isn't a Mario Bros game
There are already too many shells (the nunchuck and pistol shell need to be combined)

The Ugly:

A fifth the bandwidth as the system that came out last year
The chips are beefed up GCN chips rather than new chips
The name sucks
More money is spent on being small than being powerful
No online games at launch
No solid online plan shown thus far
No buddy list
The classic pad; seriously, it's ugly

Either a dpad or the stick on a pistol shell.

I've never been a fan of "push x while holding L" control setups to do something but I'd still rather streamline the game so each hand has a remote (one able to toggle between of the left hand of the character and free camera control, and the other remote always controlling the right hand of the character).  The nunchuck can't do that.

I could have sworn I posted this in the Wii section.

The classic pad is inferior to the 360 pad, and it's a cop out.

General Gaming / Grudge Match from Hell: Wii Remote Vs Fighting Games
« on: August 16, 2006, 12:24:22 AM »
Soul Calibur:  I'll start with the game that should work with the remote the best.  Imagine using the nunchuck's stick to move the character around and the remote to swing the weapon freely, using a button on one of the handles to jump, and other buttons along with remote movements to trigger special moves you can't do just by swinging at the other guy's face.

Mortal Kombat:  This game has been confirmed but noone knows how it will control.  It won't be the Mortal Kombat I want.  The game I want would go back to 2D, now with scrolling FMV backgrounds (like RErebirth and Zero) and all the power focused on the two 3D character models.  Players would dual wield remotes.  One dpad would move the character old school style.  The other buttons, like Soul Calibur, would be used with the remotes' motion tech to trigger special moves.  Your swings with the remotes would by default throw punches, and holding the B buttons would allow you to kick with the remotes.  Wounds would remain the whole match.  If you slice someone with a blade using the remote, the wound will appear where you swing and how you swing.  If you just hack into someone, your blade will get stuck in them; depending on your weapon you might find you have to pull the blade to cut with it like a steak knife.

I want to go back to the gritty aesthetic the game took when it first came out.

Street Fighter:  Possibly the greatest challenge.  This game can't work with 2D sprites and the remote.  I would want it to be toon shaded, 3D, and using two nude remotes.  One dpad would be for your 2D character movement, jumping, and ducking.  Up and down on the other dpad would move you along the third dimension during the fight.  Your swings with the remotes would by default throw punches, holding the B buttons would allow you to kick with the remotes, and you would use other buttons to to trigger special moves allow you to puppeteer the character's limbs when doing something like throwing a fireball.

Super Smash Bore:  Nintendo has come out and said they won't use the remote for SSB.  I think they could do some cool things with this game and two remotes (it is 2D).  When you get the hammer for example, you could really swing it.  When you throw characters, you could actually throw them.

DBZ:  I would want this game to control like Street Fighter, but using a remote to fly.

Everything should be online.

And it would be nice to see an original fighter as well.

I believe Miyamoto when he says that the next Zelda (after TP) will be a drastic departure from the format we have become accustomed to in 3D Zeldas.  I think they are going to strip away a lot of stuff, simplify the title (get ready for another Wind Waker type shock moment), and push the remote to its limits.

On 360 games not playing any different from last gen.  Well, no ****.  It's the same damn controller.

Microsoft has been talking about making a new controller (think Halo 3 bundle), and the fans are afraid it will fracture the 360 market.

I think those of us who said that the games aren't playing any different meant gameplay not the controller, there has been little in the way of innovation and instead the same old gameplay formulas (which still can be alot of fun, but nothing has struck me as true "next-gen" gameplay).

The smaller simulations in Nintendo's Wii Sports are what I believe are the beginnings of next gen gameplay.  I just want those kind of straight forward control models coupled with epic game design.  For example, Knights, using the remote to fly like the Airplane demo from E3 or a first person Star Wars where you reflect laser blasts with your saber using the remote like a raquet.

Bigger games like Metroid need to be simplified to work with the remote.  Could the grappling beam not simply be built into the right arm?  Could we not just get in Samus' ship, grab the flight stick and have some fun?  The fewer commands they try and cram in there the fewer buttons needed and the less we have to think about the controller.  The nunchuck sensors only complicate things giving players another mechanic they are not accustomed to.  If I were making a shooter, one hand would hold a nude remote and one hand would hold a small pistol shell with a remote plugged in.

What do you guys think of the recent rumor that Metroid Prime 3 will be delayed.  If it happens, I predict a year long delay, online modes added, cooperative play, and an expansive series of systems to explore (like Super Mario Galaxy, Spore, or Mass Effect).

I doubt we'll get true vehicle control (though it would work brilliantly with the remote), and when we do get a Metroid that allows us to fly the ship, its use will probably still be limited to an overblown key.

I believe the stick was an easy transition (at least for myself).  I just ran around in the court yard for a while playing with my new found sensitivity; it was fun just playing with it and being able to tip toe.  It was easier than learning to drive a car.  Mario 64 got the analog stick right the first try for character movement (even today it is a standard that games like GTA can't meet).  However, sticks were never accurate enough for things like aiming in first person.

The problem I see is there is not a traditional game for the Wii that says, this is how you do it.  It's like the DS; we're going to be wading through experiments for the first two years.

Look at Metroid Prime 3: as immaculately as the adventure may be plotted out, the controls create more problems than they solve (at least with an analog stick the crosshair was fixed like in PC shooters).

"Can you mail me your advance copy of TP when you're done playing it please?"

Come on, did you not read the E3 impressions?  The game was made for a pad.  Or are you arguing the game design won't be genius as usual?

The name was nothing but a publicity stunt.  And it still describes nothing about the system.  It's like they were trying to one up Microsoft on bad titles.

There is a similar thread on Wii being a peripheral on the 1up boards that's six pages right now; I'm sure when Luke Smith responds it will jump to nine.

The following quote from Keita Takahashi (Katamair Damacy) was eventually brought up.

"GS: What do you think of the Wii?
KT: I'm not really interested in it. I don't think a controller should have that much influence on the enjoyment of games. I see what [Nintendo is] trying to do, but they're putting such emphasis on the controller; 'Woah, this controller lets you do this!' and I'm thinking - are you messing with us? So, there's nothing I really want to do with it right now."

The problem with the above statement is that whether your controller is revolutionary or total rehash the transparency of the interface will have a direct influence on the enjoyment of your game.  The N64 proved that something new like analog control can create that raw wow moment (unfortunately I see no Mario 64 type game on the Wii that puts the remote to brilliant use).

The Wii's interface has the potential to make some games that I'd normally not even glance at (like tennis) sound fun, but thus far the real games they have tried to make with it have fallen on their faces.  They have failed to prove the remote works for traditional games.

Noone is going to argue that Twilight Princess will not be a polished epic adventure with gigantic bosses, skull fuker puzzles, and nonlinear level design; but the game is also going to control like complete shyt with the remote and that will ruin the enjoyment of the game.  It's not like Tennis where you know right away what to do.  Instead, in Zelda, you have to learn how they want you to use the remote abstractly and context sensitively for all kinds of totally different crap (you don't do what would make sense like swing the remote to swing the sword).  You can't look at the controller and know right away what to do in Zelda (once again, like Tennis) and that defeats the whole purpose of improving the controller so we can think about it less.  Instead of making it easier for players to forget about the controller many of the Wii games do quite the opposite and I think that is what KT meant to say.

on price: I think that if Wii has a fifth the bandwidth of 360, maybe it should cost one fifth the 360.

I feel more money goes into making the Wii small than making it powerful.  It's the same thing with PSP, at a certain point, you aren't paying for power anymore but rather getting the power down to a portable size.  But taking that portable hardware strategy and applying it to a console is like saying we need big console software on portables.  Noone wants to play console games on a portable (that is why the DS is kicking PSP's unholy ass).  The same goes for portability in consoles (the only time size becomes an issue with consoles is when it's a quarter the size of my minifridge, PS3).

I think what Camelot is saying is that Nintendo is not serious about online as an innovation.  I recall this being an issue for Rare a few years ago when they wanted to take PDZ online.

We don't even know if Smash Bros will have a buddy list, how many players it will support, and if any stats will be kept.  I think Wii is about to take off running with its shoe laces untied.  Will the Wii be able to foster multiplayer experiences this fall that can compare to what will be happening on Xbox LIVE and Gears of War specifically?  Will the Wii have anything online except fifteen dollar downloads of fifteen year old games?

Truthfully I'd rather have Galaxy Bros online cooperative play than Smash Bros.  I'm kind of sickened by the fact Smash Bros doesn't use the remote(s).

And if I had to guess when the Wii will launch I'd say Nov 11.  No later than that, otherwise they risk going head to head with Sony.  They have to get out before Sony like they did with the DS.  The PSP showed to everyone that Sony is not invincible; Sony's brand loyalty is not as rock solid as Sony would like to believe.  If anything, Sony's costumers are the most fickle.

I think they need to just lower the price of the console, make LIVE free for the first year if you buy before 07 begins, and hope Gears keeps them alive through the launches this fall.  Packing in a game isn't a good idea if you ask me because most people who adopt the console this fall will be looking for Gears of War first and formost.  If I had the money I'd do it, but I believe it will be just a Wii this year.

I think it looks nice, but for all we know, it could turn out to be a new 360 game in real time.

If it is RE Wii, then I am happy.  I want the first Wii game to use prerendered backgrounds.  Then later, I would like a first person RE with real time environments but with the classic, what was that, gameplay.

I want to see the Wii remote tried first on the slower paced model of the original 2.5D games.  2D gaming is not dead.  The remote control can bring new life to the old form just as it can be used to create something entirely new.  The aiming will work in third person with Nintendo's controller better than MS' in first person.

Once they get a hold of developing for Wii, then they should do a real time RE game unlike any before it.  Something similar to the early build of RE4 with free roaming first person controls?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Free Radical says no to Wii
« on: July 31, 2006, 03:41:48 PM »
This all comes down to the one console wolrd.  The majority of people out there are going to buy one console and only that brand based on the assumption of superiority.  Nintendo fanbois will say Wii is superior because of the controller and the system being bargain bin priced.  MS fans will say LIVE rules the world (if the world does not include Japan) and it has PS3 quality visuals for two hundred dollars less.  Sony fans will rave about blu ray which doesn't affect gameplay and their graphics which MS has for less costs.

The truth is there is no console that is superior.  Nintendo has the next gen interface.  MS has next gen visuals and online games.  Sony has next gen visuals and the controller that should have been five years ago.  There is no total package.  Nintendo doesn't have games online at launch, Nintendo doesn't have next gen visuals, MS has an archaic complicated controller, Sony's driving away developers with costs, etc.  It is coming down to consumer biases right now.  Some are going to judge superiority by graphics, some will say it is all about gameplay, and the gamers who are not biased are going to feel jaded as usual because they have to buy a 360 and a Wii to get everything they want (Zelda and Halo) and they will begin to want them to be one system.

For as long as I have been thinking Nintendo needs to create a revolution with a new interface, Fzero has been one of the model examples for how such controller would work to make games fun again.
