Nintendo Touts Mario Sales
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:25:56 AM »
New Super Mario Bros. crosses the half-million mark in North America, thanks to a surge in sales since the DS Lite's launch.  Also, spurious math inside!

Nintendo News: New Super Mario Bros. Surges Past Half-Million Mark

After just 35 days on store shelves, New Super Mario Bros.(R) for Nintendo   DS(TM) has racked up sales in excess of one half million in the United States   alone.  That's a sell-through rate of more than 20 every minutes since the   game went on sale May 15.

New Super Mario Bros. marks a new adventure for Mario(TM), the most   popular video game character in history.  The classic feel of the game   attracts newcomers and old-school fans alike, and the gaming press has   universally praised New Super Mario Bros. as a near-perfect video game.   IGN.com raves: " ... it absolutely is something special.  This game marks a   brilliant return to Mario's side-scrolling environments, with a look, feel and   play that feels unbelievably classic, with new elements that do a fantastic   job advancing the design."

Jonathan says: According to my trusty Windows XP calculator, twenty units per minute over 35 days would be a total of over one million units sold.

20 * 35 * 24 * 60 = 1,008,000
Perhaps Nintendo's only counting 12 hours per day.  Most stores that sell video games aren't open 24 hours a day (WalMart doesn't count).  Or perhaps twenty units per minute just sounds cooler than ten.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I actually find that number disappointing, this game should be well on its way to million-seller by now.  Not bad or anything, just not amazing like in Japan, for instance.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Use an 8 hour day and you can definitely claim that.

Do the straight math with a 500,000 start point and you get about 9 saling a minute.  Which isn't shabby at all.

There's a typo in there.  I suspect there's a missing number before the word "minutes."

I just finished getting all the gold coins.  The last one in level 7's castle was quite difficult.

Next objective, fight all the bosses without fire flowers.

After that, beat the whole game as mini-mario.

After that, cry

The multiplayer is GREAT.  It does get old after thirty minutes or so, but then you can pick it back up the next day and it feels fresh again.

The mini-game multi-player is okay.

The Star-Chaser multi-player is a blast.  I love it.  I always win though.

I do agree, the star chasing is amazingly fun... and hilarious. I grabbed a Starman, and started chasing my buddy around (talking sh*t while doing this, mind you), and he stopped... I jumped at him, and he ducked just in time for me to go sailing over him before he took off. I had to pause the game, we were laughing so hard.
INCONCEIVABLE!!!

I want a Star Chaser mode with Wario and Waluigi so there can be four players.  Larger levels would be needed though.

This just confirms that Mario-Themed multi-player/online "vs." games would be awesome.
