PODCAST: Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 107

Jon, Greg, and James didn't get to go to E3.  That doesn't make them less angsty about how it all went down.

It's probably safe to assume that most of RFN's listeners were not ecstatic after Nintendo's E3 press conference.  It can be safely stated that Jon, Greg, and James weren't either.

With Jonny in California, covering E3, and the "fans" "demanding" our "opinions," we decided to give them a 20 minute "quicky."  2 Hours later we had alienated the entire E3 field team.

Such is...

That's odd.  Working on it now.  The feed is "up to date" and it doesn't not validate.

Okay, it should be good now.

well i'll just download the mp3. no problem, At least I can do that .

Edit: Ok its up on iTunes so I'll download that instead.

Edit 2: Ok finished hearing it.

Great job guys. I agreed with everything you guys said. I was a little disappointed you didn't do regular stuff like VC mondays, What you playing and e3 be the news part so organization what I expected and what happened were two different things. Oh well not a big deal, since you were preaching to the choir and everything you guys said was spot on and funny as usual. (greg rolling around the floor playing metroid prime is just great mental image  :o )
I wanted you to hear you guys bitch out nintendo for having more garbage on VC/Wiiware before e3 and what seems like the quest to release EVERY Neo Geo game out before the SNK Collection is released.

I would give the show a 8.944444444443 /10.

So when are you guys doing a regular show again? Going to take a break or going into normal stuff in a few days?

We'll have another regular show at the end of this week.  We're back on the normal schedule now that E3 is over.

P.S. Throwing Greg into any ridiculous mental image is a guaranteed howler.

Another great show guys, very interesting!

On the podcast James mentioned he just picked up a 360, and I know Lindy has a PS3, I was curious Greg, do you have another console as, or are you now leaning towards one?

I currently do not own a console other than Wii. I've been leaning towards picking up a 360 for a while, and since I got a HDTV a few months back, I think it's very likely that I'll get one in the not-too-distant future. This is not due to any dissatisfaction with what I'm getting out of Wii, in fact I've only been getting more and more use out of it over the past few months with Brawl and great third party titles like Boom Blox, Pro Evo, and Okami. My interest is due to the software library that the 360 has now built up (though I remain relatively unenthused by FPS games, but I'd doubtlessly get some of them with a 360 anyway).

That makes a lot of sense.  I'm pretty satisfied w/ the Wii as well but have been leaning towards the PS3 for Blue Ray as I too recently acquired an HDTV.  As far as gaming on the PS3, I would definitely pick up a few of their racers, and the upcoming Little Big Planet (not a FPS fan either).

For gaming I think the 360 is the best system, it is too bad it does not have a blu-ray attachment though. I can see the dilemma if you want blu-ray movies (which is why I got both!). Though PS3 does have the groundbreaking and revolutionary title Resistance Fall of Man. So I dunno ;)

Where's the Lords of Thunder love? The second time Greg, James and Jon are together, and no mention of Lords of Thunder? C'mon now...  :(

Podcast Mercenaries FTW!

It'll be interesting when Nintendo brings Retro back into the limelight. With their key people uncermoniously canned, what direction will Retro take?

You guess mentioned during the show Nintendo would surely release more games before the holiday, but it looks as if America's favorite soccer mom has other ideas:

Wired.com: Have we seen the extent, now, of Nintendo’s 2008 holiday lineup?

Dunaway: You have seen the extent of Nintendo’s 2008 holiday lineup. Also items that we didn’t talk about yesterday, like Wario Land: Shake It. Which is a great franchise for the core. It’s Wario in all his gross wonderfulness, shaking the Wii remote, and that’s going to be tons of fun.

Looks like its going to be the worst Nintendo Christmas after all.   :'(

One point I think hasn't been touched on is that this was a lame E3 even for casual gamers. Wii Music and Animal Crossing do not make for an amazing casual gamer christmas either. Now if they had Wii Sports 2 for Christmas that would mean something. As it stands Animal Crossing is a fun game but nothing huge and Wii Music, is, well, Wii Music.

But they won't even notice!  They're still too busy playing The Wii Bowling Machine!

If the early impressions of Wii Music are anything to go by, I think GoldenPhoenix has an important point that this holiday season may be a letdown beyond simply a lack of Nintendo-published traditional games. Looking at some of the interviews from Cammie Dunaway and Reggie, it seems that the only way Nintendo may patch-up their sparse holiday schedule is with WiiWare titles. I remain very enthused by the prospect of what Nintendo's internal teams could create for WiiWare, but we still haven't seen any signs of them committing that kind of creative talent to WiiWare development yet.

Regardless of how the holiday lineup itself turns out, I think Nintendo would do well to organise some manner of showcase for previously unseen projects at some time this year in order to address the apprehensions of certain sectors of its audience. It is necessary to engage these consumers if their relatively consistent flow of software purchases for Wii is to be maintained. If development on all such projects really isn't far enough along for Nintendo to give them a substantial showing at some point this year, questions need to be asked regarding how Nintendo has managed the development schedules of its various teams.

Lest Greg worry that his maidenhood is at risk, rest assured that I'm happily married, safely ensconced on another continent, and quite certain that the closest I'll come to buggery is a rousing game of Bugdom 2 on the Mac.

I am a great and sincere fan, though, of Mr. Leahy's keen gaming insight and vast vocabulary; anyone who can work "interregnum" and "meritocratic" into a gaming podcast has my respect. (Just for reference, the clerk at my local Target store nearly had to be hospitalized after trying to pronounce "Madagascan vanilla" for a price check last week.)

Hahahaha, well I suppose that allays any conceivable concerns one could have! Many thanks for your kind words and support of the show, it is very much appreciated.

In one sense my belief that Nintendo will make some kind of move before year's end to address the concerns of its traditional base is optimisitc, but it's also based on what I perceive to make commercial sense for Nintendo at a broad strategic level. Of course, if Nintendo were to be negligent in this regard, it would hardly be the first time they've been guilty of making strategic missteps as a company. So I readily concede that such an olive branch to the traditional base is far from inevitable this year.

Let's look at Nintendo's Wii holiday schedule for years past

2006:
Wii Sports
Zelda Twilight Princess
Excite Truck

2007:
Fire Emblem
Mario Galaxy
Link's Crossbow Training

2008:
Wii Music
Animal Crossing

I'm guessing there will be a third game for Christmas 2008. Keep in mind though that we knew all the Holiday titles by the end of E3 the last two years, so it's probably a game we have already seen. What is the release date for Fatal Frame 4?
