Microsoft bought Nokia!
« on: September 03, 2013, 04:42:30 AM »
Microsoft just announced that they bought Nokia's phone and hardware division.

This is very good news for both companies, as Nokia will now get a huge cash influx to survive, and Microsoft will have a reliable hardware partner to exclusively produce new mobile devices.

I suppose it's fitting, as both companies peaked about a decade ago.

Nokia still does good things, and so does Microsoft, but both companies have declined quite a bit over the last ten or so years.

Nokia's 8800 is still my favorite phone ever, though due to necessity I've had to make it my favorite backup/adventure phone ever. Simply indestructible.

As you can see it still goes for quite a bit.

Those old Nokia phones could survive a nuclear bomb. Seems like a good fit and I hope microsoft puts nokia in control of windows phone instead the other way around.

They'll keep the hardware side.  The Software side will probably still be Microsoft.

Mac OSX is better than Windows 8. It's far more versatile and functional.

QFT. Might be a little unfair to call Nokia the world's worst phone maker (that's probably ZTE or something), but still a good point.

Calling Nokia the world's best phone maker is a bit of a stretch. There's a reason their market share has gone from nearly 40% to less than 5% in the past few years.

My 6230 and N95 weep at this news.

At least it's only the smartphone group that's going, so when I need a beater I can grab an inexpensive Nokia and make sure that it will survive a gunshot.

What about Motorola? Are their phones pretty durable?

I would argue that Motorola makes the best phones, at lest on Verizon (and now AT&T). Yes their phones are durable, my kids throw my wife's old RAZR around all the time and it's still in great condition.

I got an old broken down used Motorola out of the dumpster once and it was smashed to hell and still worked damn good. I taped the screen back to the unit and it worked fine. I also have had great experiences with Samsung but I hate the iPhone it is a damn joke I regret buying that piece of junk pretty much daily.

I seriously do not get the Mac love, what is do damn special about an OS that is broken into pieces? I hate that it drives me crazy.

I'm not sure where you got the impression that the Mac OS is "broken into pieces". I don't even know what that means. It's a perfectly functional operating system with no major issues.

I mean the layout is annoying. I hate how the stupid Menu Bar just sits there and you really have to pay attention to what program your using, its annoying I like the Windows set up much better. I also hate how the stupid software is broken into little damn boxes all over the place instead of a single coherent window, that drives me insane. Maybe that is just the screwey setup my school has I don't know but having tool bars all over the fucking place with the desktop showing through is stupid. I also hate the Finder I think Explorer is much better, and that weird little doo dad that pops up at the bottom man I hate that thing the most.

The multiple windows thing is an application by application thing. I'm guessing since you're referring to your school your main issue there is Microsoft Office, which does do that by default, but can be configured to work in one window or full screen. The menu bar is a matter of personal preference; I like it because it keeps a uniform appearance and you know where to look for things, but I've been using Macs for going on 20 years, so I can understand why someone familiar with something else would think differently. As for the Finder, it and the Windows Explorer are more or less functionally identical, so I'm not sure how anyone's preference there could be that strong.

Like I said it might just be the configuration my school uses but I hate it it drives me nuts. No It isn't office we have that set up right, it is mostly the Adobe stuff and the MAC specific stuff.

Finder is not even close to Explorer, finder is a tiny little pop up Explorer works within the Windows environment, again unless that is just how the school has it set up if that is the case then you are right they are similar but I for one prefer my environment to be uniform, everything opens in a full sized window, that is why I like Windows, on the Mac, in my experience at least, everything is all over the place. I also really like the start menu and the task bar, I don't know I guess I have been using Windows forever so we must just differ due to our experiences I just personally don't get it, thankfully most people tend to side with me as Windows is still the most popular OS in the world, which I maintain is because it is the best but to each their own I guess...

On a side note for what its worth I really do like Ubuntu so it isn't Windows or nothing for me.
