The Legend of Zelda Wii U Release Date Pool

With little information to go on, the NWR staff decided to guess when they think the next Zelda game is coming out.

We’ve been waiting more than three years since The Legend of Zelda on Wii U was first mentioned. It has been almost two years since the first footage, and we’ve already seen one huge delay. Overall, we have seen very little of the next mainline Zelda game, especially considering it’s set to release in 2016.

So as we wait for more information and an eventual release date, our staff entered a light-hearted, good-natured Zelda Release Date Pool. Everyone sent in their pick for the release date, as well as some tiebreaker questions. Whoever gets the closest to the date will win a copy of the game. Any further tiebreakers will be settled in Smash.

  • Andrew Brown - June 30, 2016
  • Jonathan Metts - October 23, 2016
  • Neal Ronaghan* - November 11, 2016
  • Matt West* - November 11, 2016
  • Donald Theriault* - November 11, 2016
  • James Jones - November 14, 2016
  • Adam Abou-Nasr** - November 18, 2016
  • John Rairdin** - November 18, 2016
  • JP Corbran** - November 18, 2016
  • Becky Hollada** - November 18, 2016
  • James Charlton** - November 18, 2016
  • Kim Keller** - November 18, 2016
  • Justin Berube** - November 18, 2016
  • Nicholas Bray - December 1, 2016
  • Addison Webb - December 2, 2016
  • Bryan Rose - January 27, 2017
  • Zach Miller - February 19, 2017
  • Michael “TYP” Cole - March 10, 2017

All of these picks are locked in. Now we wait for June to roll around so Andrew can be proven wrong and then we can see who will be right. What do you think Zelda's release date will be?

*Tiebreaker for November 11 - Neal says 3 words in the title other than “The Legend of Zelda”; Matt says 2 words; Donald says 5

**Tiebreaker #1 for November 18 - Adam and Justin say 2 words in the title other than “The Legend of Zelda”; John, JP, Becky, James, and Kim say 3 words

Tiebreaker #2 for November 18 - Adam says it will be after Link’s Awakening on the timeline; Justin says after Skyward Sword; John says after Phantom Hourglass; JP says prequel to The Legend of Zelda; Becky and Kim say after Skyward Sword; James says “LOL”

I'm going with December. I think Nintendo will push it as close to the end of the year as possible to squeeze every last drop of development time into it as possible.

I think Andrew Brown is the closest. They will want to sell as many copies as possible BEFORE NX comes out which means it needs a couple of months. I would have guessed early August, but the last day of June is only a month earlier and might be right.

"The game takes place after Skyward Sword"

That's a bold statement, considering every game in the series does, as well.

Anyway, the game isn't coming out until holiday 2016 or potentially even later. So the large group hovering around November has it spot-on.

My prediction is based on a separate prediction that NX will include both handheld and console SKUs, with the handheld model launching this holiday and the console in early 2017.

TheBigKFebruary 10, 2016

I firmly believe that Zelda is being moved to NX and that the two will launch November 24 of 2017. But I'm just a jaded pessimist. Prove me wrong, Nintendo. It would be pretty cool if you did, but I don't expect that you will.

November 22nd

I would have said 24th, but games are usually released on Tuesdays.

WHOA.

I thought this was a quote from me.

AdrockFebruary 10, 2016

December 9, 2016 on Wii U because it's launching with NX on November 18, 2016 first.

Nintendo (and others now) love Friday, and I don't think they'd be crazy enough to release a new Zelda on Black Friday.

Probably the Friday before Black Friday.

But it's actually getting Star Fox'd. April 7, 2017.

I'm betting on an October date, given an NX launch in November.  It will launch within a couple weeks of Pokémon Z, either before or after (likely after).  If I had to pick a date, I'm going with October 27th (my rupees are on a Thursday).  I guess that makes my Pokémon guess October 13.  Zelda will have a 2-word subtitle (not counting "the").

My follow-up guess for half-credit is September 22.  This would give Zelda another month ahead of the NX.

November 20th. Same as Skyward Sword.

TrueNerdFebruary 11, 2016

March 24th, 2017. The same day Wind Waker came out in 2003.

TurdFurgyFebruary 15, 2016

I'm surprised that more people didn't say November 20. Nintendo liked that sunday for Wii, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Wii U.

michaelbaysuperfan616February 15, 2016

I will say September 29. This year. On NX. The console.

Sunday was Nintendo's go-to release day for a long time, but they've moved more to Fridays in the last couple years.

Mop it upFebruary 17, 2016

Have Nintendo stopped releasing their "big" games on a Sunday? I'd have thought November 20th since it's a Sunday, but no one chose that and everyone chose the 18th. I know that systems like GameCube and Wii released on the 18th, but I'm pretty sure those were Sundays.

NX version first and then the Wii U version like 2 weeks later. So Zelda U and NX November 32nd. .

So how did The Younger Plumber know?

Close, but no cigar. Bested by The Younger Plumber.
