NWR Staff's 10 Favorite Games of 2014

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call

by Zachary Miller - December 24, 2014, 11:24 am EST

The second verse of this young rhythm game series is even better than the first.

Did you like 2012's Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy? Me too. It came out of left field and surprised me with its incredible music and surprisingly deep take on RPG mechanics given its rhythm game classification. But hook me it did, and I spent the next two years playing it off and on, mostly for Street Passes, collecting crystals and characters, and virtually memorizing "One-Winged Angel" on Hard. You can imagine my delight the sequel, Curtain Call, was announced and released over here.

Curtain Call is basically more of the first game, but with lots of improvements. The story mode, for example, now consists of an overworld map and "stages" made up of random songs. An improved versus mode brings Guitar Hero-esque attack powers to the table. It is packed with over 200 songs and a seemingly endless cavalcade of Final Fantasy characters to play as. Not content with simply remixing tracks that had appeared in the original (those are here, too), we get track lists from virtually every game to bear the name Final Fantasy, including Dissidia, Type-O, Mystic Quest, X-2, XIII-2 and XIII-3, and even music from Advent Children (no love for Spirits Within?). Want more tracks? There is extensive DLC, too (and potential for some Chrono Trigger songs to come over from Japan). Like the game's comical Fat Chocobos, Curtain Call is stuffed with delicious content.

You can play online in the versus mode. The newly added button control scheme is actually very good. Everything about Curtain Call is better than its predecessor. It's doubtlessly one of the best games of the year. Also, play with headphones on. You won't regret it.

I'm noticing a distinct lack of Layton vs Wright.

That just means James Jones was NOT part of that group.
