Did you really think Smash wouldn't appear on this list?
It's undoubtedly special when a new Super Smash Bros. game shows up at E3. Even last year, when it only existed in video form, excitement for Smash Bros. was all over Los Angeles. This year, the Smash Bros. presence was so thick you could cut it with a knife. The clear winner for E3 2014 Game of Show was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. While the demo was laser-focused on delivering two-minute multiplayer matches, that's all we needed to have boundless excitement for the upcoming Wii U release. The new characters, including Mega Man, Little Mac, Villager, Rosalina & Luma, Greninja, and Wii Fit Trainer, were all interesting and unique. Mega Man has a certain stiffness that is true to his origins. Little Mac is a ground powerhouse with some devastating moves. Villager features all sorts of spectacular Animal Crossing references in a fun, endearing manner. Even the changes to some of the new characters were fun to see, especially Bowser's improvements.
The items were also fun to see. The Blue Shell, which hunts out the first-player character, is rewarding to use, unless the player dodges out of the way and makes someone else eat it. The Fire Bar is basically a flaming sword. The Bullet Bill zooms across the screen in a humorous manner. Just all the little touches that Sakurai is known for were all over this demo. This is the new Smash Bros., and it looks like it's everything the majority of players wanted. This holiday season can't come soon enough.
