Historical Figures

Check out these new Nintendo figurines from Japan!

Today I'll showcase a neat little set of figurines that recently released in Japan.
Manufactured by the oddly-named MediCom Toy company as part of their extensive Ultra Detail Figure line, these six figurines represent the evolution of two classic Nintendo characters across the years - Mario and Link.

I've collected the various pieces of art for comparison.

In the Mario series, we have Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii faithfully depicted, while the Zelda figures show Link from the original Legend of Zelda, The Wind Waker and Skyward Sword.

Forgive the flash. I need a new camera...

Each one is designed after a specific and iconic piece of official artwork that was used to promote each game at the time of its release. What's really cool is that the box art uses colors and backgrounds that were prominent in each of the games' cover art as well, for that little extra touch of authenticity.

Once upon a time, Mario had red overalls and a blue shirt.

Tanooki Mario! Each figure has the corresponding game's logo on the base.

Mario has lost weight over the years. Maybe I should be an adventurer too.

The packages are sealed with some rather loose tape on the back that can be easily peeled off as well, and the backing card can just slide out to take the figures out. This means that, should you desire, you can easily put them back in and slide the card back to display them in their boxes. They'd make cool shelf decorations lined up in their packs!

I miss the yellow rim on Link's cap, I always thought it looked cool.

I'm so looking forward to Wind Waker HD!

Even his chain-mail has texturing! I wish the Figma had that.

The figures are only some 10cm tall each with Skyward Link being the tallest with his raised sword, but the detail is still impressive on the whole set. You won't find intricacies like on some of the more expensive sculpted toys out there (these ones are selling for roughly $10 each) and there may be a tiny manufacturing fault in the paint here and there, but what you get for a reasonable price is a neat little piece of Nintendo history and an accurate representation of how the characters looked once upon a time.

That mushroom won't be smiling when Mario gets hungry.

Check out the gallery below for a couple more pictures.

I would kill for that Tanooki suit mario.. and the original Link is my favorite of the whole bunch! That's the first time I've ever seen that character model in 3D and I love it! Reminds me of a pillow case I used to have.. :/ damn dog chewed it all up.

There's a store in NYC that carries these type of figures. If I could find that OG Link... I'd lose my mind. Then I'd buy it.

Mario really hasn't changed that much in appearance since the NES days.  If you travelled back in time and gave the kid me the figure based on his modern design it probably wouldn't look weird or off to me.  His face in particular is effectively identical.  His voice is the most distinctly different element between then and now.  Compare that to Sonic who got a very noticable overhaul with Sonic Adventure.

Nintendo had a weird thing going in the NES days where they seemed unsure of what colour Mario's pants are.  I remember when Super Mario Bros. 3 came out and the box art looked strange to me and it took a little while for me to realize that he was wearing blue pants and a red shirt, the exact opposite of his outfit in SMB1 and 2.  Little did I know at the time that the blue pants look was already in Mario Bros. (where he wears a BLUE HAT in the arcade version!) so perhaps it wasn't Nintendo switching as much as standarizing an inconsistent design.

Though Donkey Kong has Mario in red pants and blue shirt and being his first appearance that holds a better claim to being the "correct" colouring so it's odd that Nintendo went with the blue pants exception as the standard (I just checked DK Jr. and Wrecking Crew; Mario Bros. is the lone pre-SMB3 blue pants title I can find).  They probably figured blue pants would represent jeans and would be more realistic.

...or they just fucked up and have been copying a mistake for over 20 years.

Seriously. I would like a link to a place where I can get a hold of these Links!

awesome.................. BRING OUT LUCARIO!!!!~!!!!!!

I got mine through HobbySeach at http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/ but they're also sold at many other places such as amiami and yesasia. Play-asia may also stock them for an inflated price.

I'd love to see MediCom continue this line and expand into other characters such as Donkey Kong (with his absurdly huge grin on the original arcade machine) or Samus, who looked quite cartoony in the original manual art.
