Kickstarter Watch: The Hand of Panda

Inspired by the brick-breaking martial arts minigames of old fighting games, the project has shifted to Nintendo platforms.

Kickstarter Watch is a feature that attempts to help readers stay apace of Nintendo-related Kickstarter crowdfunding projects. In recent years, crowdfunding has become a popular alternative method of funding for many original, niche, and independent projects and products. Although the campaigns mentioned within the feature are actively soliciting fund-raising pledges, their inclusion does not constitute an endorsement on the part of Nintendo World Report.

Ross Omland and Isaias Martinez have an idea of the game they want to make, and it's firmly rooted in the classics: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Art of Fighting, etc. But it's not necessarily the actual fighting itself but the block-breaking button-mashing and timing minigames between bouts that inspires their Kickstarter for "The Hand of Panda."

In fact, the entire game is intended to focus on and expand the classic "Test Your Might" concepts of old-school games. Omland and Martinez describe their title as a rhythm and timing game, and promise expanded gameplay and new mechanics to build up chi energy and enable "Panda" to break wood, stones, metal, and more exotic materials. In doing so, the game's protagonist will progress in his training with his mentor, Master Koi.

Omland and Martinez's current Kickstarter campaign aims to raise $3000 to help them make the game a reality. This is actually a reduced funding target in conjunction with their new target platform: the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Originally the game makers had targeted XBLA, PSN, and the PC, but their 2012 Kickstarter campaigned failed to raise the $25,000 they were hoping for.

The Kickstarter campaign talks about an eventual release of a Wii U version, but it makes it clear that the 3DS platform is the current focus of the developers.
