Backmasked audio reveals a familiar tune.

Time-reversing the music from the latest The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword trailer reveals that the track is based on Zelda's Lullaby, a recurring theme that originated in A Link to the Past.

Youtube user FPawesome1 first discovered the hidden motif after playing a recording of the trailer backwards. The trailer was shown by Satoru Iwata at his GDC keynote. Below, you can watch the original trailer, followed by a time-reversed version.

Nintendo is known for hiding musical "easter eggs," such as the GameCube menu music, which was a slowed-down version of the Famicom Disk System boot jingle.

That is both really creepy and INSANELY cool and clever!

StogiMay 03, 2011

That's amazing! Well done.

This is really, really cool. The person who wrote the music to that trailer is awesome.

When I saw the trailer at GDC, I remember thinking that the song was familiar, in the way that songs in New Super Mario Bros. resemble old songs, but are actually new. In this case, I thought of Song of Storms.

This is Da Vinci  Code level trickery.

My mind just exploded!

I wonder if this is actually tied to the gameplay or story. I mean, perhaps reversing time is an important gameplay mechanic, or "Zelda's Lullaby" and "Zelda's Wakeup Song" are somehow intertwined. In Majora's Mask, playing the Song of Time backwards slowed time down, so there's a precedent....

Yeah, this is badass.

I know this is about the music discovery which is cool but doesn't Link look odd and awkward holding his shield with this left hand?  Just doesn't seem natural.  Be like me with a mouse to my left instead of right.

SilverQuilavaMay 04, 2011

Here's to hoping Nintendo never stops doing awesome things like this!

NeoStar9XMay 04, 2011

Great find. Nintendo has done this before but it's still cool when another one of these is found out.

Da JarvisMay 05, 2011

It's like Nintendo is trying to brainwash us to buy other zelda games... Jk, but that is still pretty cool :)

Link's sword totally brings spiders back to life now!
