Title: E3 2010 Day 1 - Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft Press Conferences Thread
Post by: broodwars on June 14, 2010, 01:06:28 PM
Figured we might as well have a dedicated thread for these considering how much discussion they'll generate.  The following are the start times for the various conferences today, June 14th 2010:

1:30 PM EST - Microsoft Press Conference
5:00 PM EST - EA Press Conference
8:00 PM EST - Ubisoft Press Conference

(Thanks to Stevey for this info)

http://e3.ign.com/2010/live/ (http://e3.ign.com/2010/live/)

If you're at home
Spike TV is showing MS live
G4 too busy showing Goldfinger to show MS's but they will have EA and UBisoft later"

Looking forward to the discussion as we catch our first glimpses of gaming's future.   :D    I'll try to get two threads like this up tommorow for Nintendo and Sony as well.

I won't get home until after 2PM, so I will just download it later from GameSpot (or someplace else). Same with Sony and Nintendo.

I think it would be better to have separate threads for each conference (or at least a separate one for Nintendo).  They're so close together (especially Nintendo and Sony) that discussions are going to get confusing fast.

Very well, as you wish.  I'll convert this to Day 1 Press Conferences (Microsoft, with minor discussion of EA and Ubisoft) only.

Microsoft Press Conference is starting in a few minutes.  As for the IRC Chat, I don't think I can access it from work, so I'll stick to this (I'm using the gametrailers feed, FYI).

Indeed, and now that we're into gameplay footage I do like the smaller scale conflicts in this game (as opposed to Modern Warfare's all-out battles).  Games like this just aren't my kind of thing.

Kojima's on stage with his successor showing off Metal Gear Solid Rising, and I have to admit that's a pretty badass trailer.  I love the ability to slice enemies and environmental objects into pieces with what looks like pretty good precision.

I guess it's cool that Crytec is making a game for Xbox, but they showed no gameplay at all.
This conference is having a hard time holding my interest.

Yeah, same here.  That trailer looked extremely generic.

And...they're talking about the next Halo.  *yawn*  I'm headed off to go watch the rest of the Conference on a computer where I can't post, so I'll post my thoughts on the rest of the Conference when I get back from "lunch".

so the movie link on the video chat has preselected videos? or do they just play something and you have to watch it.

so they finally demonstrate the tilt motor in the Kinect. follows you around the room.... but what if there are 2 of you in the shot and one moves? what does it do?
WHAT DOES IT DOOO!!!!!!

It sounds like Nintendo may officially be off the hook for the infamous Wii Music E3 presentation.  If you focus on on the stuff that may actually be, you know, good did MS even announce any new games?  Possible worst E3 presentation ever?

So to summarize today's Microsoft Press Conference:

-Call of Duty Black Ops looks like a slightly lower-scale CoD game, with helicopter action in a jungle setting.
-Microsoft purchased exclusive First Release rights to Activision Call of Duty DLC for 3 years.
-Gears of War 3 looks like a Gears of War game
-Metal Gears Solid Rising looks ****ing awesome, though Kojima will find some way to screw it up with a nonsensical storyline and endless talking.
-Fable 3 looks like a Fable game.
-Microsoft's bringing ESPN video content to Xbox LIVE, with free access to Gold members.
-Kinect looks bloody awful, with the exception of Kinect Adventures and Dance Central.
-They somehow managed to find a way to make Star Wars lightsaber combat look lame because the game was shown too early.
-New 360 black redesign coming for $299 with WiFi access and 250 GB HDD.

Yeah, but it is swapable, so when they release their 500GB HDD, you can still switch it out.  It's inside the system rather than outside.  Also, the Kinect does not need additional power with the new system.  With the old one, they require an additional plug.  My guess is they will release the Kinect in white and black but they will only advertise the black one so that you will want to buy a new 360 to go along with it.

Spike's made its disdain for Nintendo perfectly clear ("Wii GOTY: NSMBWii. Moving onto more imporant things: the candidates for the award for Best Lighting In A Sewer Scene (Nighttime)! are...*five minute montage*"), so it's no surprise that they're skipping the conference.

Regarding the timing, Eastern time is three hours ahead of Pacific, so G4's coverage will begin at 8:30.  Presumably, with commentary rather than the actual conference.

Considering how terrible Microsoft's conference just was it'd be very hard to.  Hell instead of showing off Zelda Wii, Nintendo's conference could just be Miyamoto with all the top members of EAD 3 doing the Zelda dance for over 2 hours straight and it would still be better then Microsoft conference.

I exaggerate, but not by very much.  Most categories got extensive lead-up, trailers for each candidate, etc., and the 360+PS3 GOTYs doubly so.  The Wii's GOTY was literally thrown in with some of the most minor categories, and dispensed with in under a minute or so.

Wow, EA just got an assist for Sony, promising to show more Dead Space 2 at tomorrow's E3 Press Conference.   The game looks awesome, though, even if it does look like more of the same.  In this case, considering it still looks like a survival horror game, that's fine with me.   ;D

Overall, if there was two words I'd use to sum up as the keys to this EA Press Conference, they'd be "professional" and "momentum".  They said at the start of the show that they had 10 games to show off from 10 different developers, and they just kept moving through the presentation until they'd shown off all 10 of them.  No one game (except for Madden, IMO) had too much screen time, and even if I wasn't interested in the games I never felt like I was being talked down to.  And "THREEEE DEEEE!!! was only mentioned once.  Definitely a fresh air of competence after the disaster that was Microsoft's Press Conference.  My only complaint is that, aside from Need for Speed, there were really no surprises.  We already knew about nearly all of these games.  And no Mirror's Edge 2 is troubling.  That Dead Space 2 footage revived my faith in that game, though, which had been low ever since I heard about the new multiplayer mode and the intent to make this more "action"-y.

Looking forward to the Ubisoft Press Conference after I get home from work tonight.

There is a rumor that Ubi is bringing real games and real support to the 3DS, but I doubt you will see any of that at the Ubi Conference.
I imagine a large chunk of the Nintendo conference will be dedicated to 3DS and a large portion of that is gonna be on the 3rd party support.

Of course, the question we must ask ourselves is this: can this year's Press Conference possibly top last year's, where they had James Cameron on-screen for something like 30 minutes talking about his Avatar movie before walking off-stage without any game footage?

Well, it looks like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is up now with a cinematic trailer.  Meh, I'll take gameplay footage, thank you.

And I see Ezio is just as much of a master assassin in this game as he was in the last, dressed all in white to blend in with a group of red-robed people walking right up to the person he's going to kill, through the guards.   ::)

FPS games sell in the US.  So they keep making them.  When they stop selling, they'll stop making them or try to turn everyone somewhere else.

Yes, FPS is the safe choice when you don't have any unique ideas capable of selling outside the genre.  The big-wigs would love to sell the next "GTA" or "WiiSports", but these kinds of new games are limited to very few companies.

"Real games for real gamers"

Ubisoft, you don't get to say that after this Press Conference.

Oh wow, a Michael Jackson game.  Be nice to actually see the game, though.  Maybe this is just an announcement that they've acquired the license.

Where's BG&E2?! :(

Ubisoft saw that Just Dance sold probably 10x the number of copies BG&E2 could ever hope to sell and said "to hell with that."  Unfortunately, my much-desired sequel to Prince of Persia 2008 is probably lying in that pit right next to it.

Can we all agree the most promising title we saw at this show was probably that Rayman Digital Download title?  Assassin's Creed Brotherhood looked like more of the same, and Ghost Recon (probably the 3rd best game there) just doesn't look terribly interesting to me.

I will get a 3DS for sure if it has BG&E2, though that's a game that I think would work better with a home console.

I have to admit, live chatting through these 3 Press Conferences today was a lot more fun than I thought it would be when I originally created this topic (probably partially helped by how horrible 2 out of the 3 conferences were).  I'm definitely looking forward to the 2 Conferences tomorrow for Nintendo and Sony.

I checked out all the games, and the only game that had me excited was the Gears of War 3 game.  Which, is not even a game I like...so I could pass that up.  Now, the Metal Gear Solid game could be very cool, but it honestly didn't look that engaging after the core idea of cutting gets boring.

SKITTLES!

I actually feel sorry for that little girl, who was actually kind of cute playing with that demo.  She actually seemed to be into that game (or at least was good at acting like it), and she will never live that demo down.
