Title: Kicking Out A Roommate
Post by: Maverick on April 08, 2008, 06:49:05 PM
So I've had a friend from high school living with me for the past couple of months. We weren't "good friends", but it was more of a "he's friends with my friends" thing. I felt more comfortable living with him than a complete stranger as I desperately needed someone to help me out with rent money.
Although he's very good with money and always pays on-time, he just really gets on my nerves. I'm about fed up with him, and I can't really say it's his fault. More of just a "different personalities" thing, really.
Anyways I'm looking to kick him out and was wondering what the appropriate way to do that is. Should I give him more than the obligatory month? 2 months, 3 months? Do I say "GTFO!" or do I word it in a friendly way? "Hey man, how was your day? Oh yeah? That's coolGet the **** out of my house I haven't been doing much, just hangin' around."
Anywhoo I was originally going to post this in the "I Hate My Housemate" thread but then I remembered that they're called Roommates god damn it!

Change the locks and put his stuff out on the curb. Unplug and phone. He'll slowly figure it out.
It really depends on what kind of guy he is. Can you just say this isn't working out, can you find a new place to live and trust him to sort it out in a timely manner, or do you need to give him a deadline?

It also depends on the laws of the city you live in. You might not be able to just kick him out. I had that problem once before.

Don't bring that thing in here man, you already have a thread for that ;)

what if *I* was the roommate that didn't have to leave?

Well, he's a pretty good guy like I said. He's had his fair share of problems, though. He's a "recovering" drug addict who has dropped the hard stuff and only smokes weed (still too much I think, but he respects my rule of "no illegal things in the house".) He also drinks too much, but I've never had an altercation from it, the only problem is he leaves beer bottles laying around. But like I said no actual problems other than him being annoying. I don't think he'd be a jerk if I told him to leave.
He's also not a legal resident of the building. So I don't think I have to worry about laws.

Is he the only person living with you?
Anyways, I'd just tell him that you need to talk when it looks like he isn't busy. When you do talk, tell him that the two of you just aren't working out, and while you think he's a good friend, living together just isn't working like you hoped. Ask him to start looking for another place to live, and hope he doesn't get angry.

Nah I have another roommate who I've been living with for the better part of two years now. He's laid back like me and just hangs out in his room all day so he allows me the whole house to myself pretty much.
Yeah I'll probably just try to tactfully inform him of his doom. That or make up a bogus excuse of some sorts. I don't think he'd get angry, more of just depressed over it or something and mope around afterwards.

Does the other roommate feel the same way you do?
If so, the two of you should sit down with the odd man and tell him together. It'll be a little easier.

My other roommate flatout hates him. But I'm the one who brought him into the fold so I kind of feel responsible for it.
I might be getting a new job soon, so if I do I'm just gonna tell him I'm making more money now so I don't need him to make the payments.

MEGA UPDATE:
(I usually don't double post but it's been a caraaaazy night.)
So me and my other roommate are helping out my dad with moving some furniture last (this?) night. We end up being there until after 1:00 in the morning 'cause he had us starting so late. I get frustrated since after we finish moving the furniture pieces into his room my dad demands that we start putting it all together (nuts and bolts and what not). It's 1 in the fucking morning, and he damn well doesn't need us to do that, I signed on for the heavy lifting 'cause he legitimately needed the help. We end up getting in a fight about it (a physical fight). I am distraught as my father has never laid a hand on me in all of my 20 years on the planet. Me and my roommate flee from the scene to return home.
When we arrive, the roommate I so wished to remove from my house is laying on the couch in no shirt and his pajamas eating beans out of a bowl on the couch. My other roommate which was with me at my dad's sees this gruesome scene and flips out. As he is already riled up from the events prior, his adrenaline was off the charts and he just snapped on him. They get into a shouting match at the top of their lungs, and the roommate I intended to let go decides it's a good idea to show my other roommate just how crazy he is and why he shouldn't be fucked with. It worked. He acquires a giant serrated steak knife from the kitchen and begins to wave it around furiously as he shouts back at my other roommate. At this point my other roommate backs down and begins to repeat "put the knife down". The crazy mcfucknuts roommate then proves his crazy mcfuckness by approaching the other roommate with the knife and slitting his own wrist with it to prove a point about how crazy mcfucknuts he is. He thens swings the blade cutting through my living room wall. My roommate runs outside and Crazy McFuckNuts follows him. There he continues to scream and shout about how he shouldn't be fucked with while furiously attacking my outside light with the knife, blood spewing from his forearm. He swings the knife furiously once more, this time breaking the blade out of the hilt.
With him now disarmed, I try my best to settle them both down and get them to shut the **** up. I just had a traumatic experience with my father and this guy is stealing all my thunder by being a crazy mcfucknut. I can't allow that to happen. Once McFuckNut is calm, my other roommate takes off. Freaked out of his mind. My patio is covered in blood. I get a couple towels for McFuckNut so he can put some pressure on his self-inflicted wound. It's a really deep cut, definitely requires stitches. I saw little tubes poking out of the gash, it was rather gross.
I take this time to inform him that even though my other roommate was wrong for snapping on him and starting the fight, that he crossed way over the line into crazytown and that he is no longer welcome in my house. He must leave for tonight, and come for his things sometime this week. Since he has no insurance and cannot afford to get stitches, I take him to the nearest gas station where he procures some bandages and ghetto-rigs his wound. We return home, and he collects a few things to last him for a couple days, and departs.
I have now spent the last several hours cleaning blood stains out of my carpet and off my patio, calling a locksmith to come change the locks immediately, and staring at the huge cut in my wall with utter rage. It is now 6:20 in the morning, and I cannot sleep. I have been so hyped on adrenaline that I find it impossible.
So in the end, MISSION ACCOMPLISHEDIn the craziest and scariest way possible.

You should have had him committed. He's a danger to himself and to others.
Hope you have a chain to keep the door locked or a chair to prop up against it until the locksmith gets there. Just in case, you should post in this thread at least every two hours. That way if you miss a check-in we know to contact the local authorities.
Title: Re: Kicking Out A Roommate
Post by: that Baby guy on April 13, 2008, 12:00:57 PM
You may want to call the authorities yourself. Tell them what happened, let them know you don't wish to press charges, but that the guy may need some help. It might be too late for that, but they're the ones that would judge that, not you, me, or anyone here.
Anyways, the good news is that he's out of your house, but it's too bad there's bad news to go along with it. Sounds like you handled the issue pretty well yourself, though, I've got to commend you on it.

I had been quietly watching this thread, since I recently kicked out a housemate, we did it badly, other housemates were drunk and text messaged him from the safety of 200kms away while I was in the house with him and had to put up with his passive aggressive **** for the next month. But didn't really have any advice to offer. Since reading your mega update uh, I guess mine went pretty smoothly.
Since he has no insurance and cannot afford to get stitches, I take him to the nearest gas station where he procures some bandages and ghetto-rigs his wound. We return home, and he collects a few things to last him for a couple days, and departs.
I hope you got him butterfly strips / steri strips whatever they're called. Holy ****.
Also in a semi related note I was playing strikers today and my housemate stole my chips that I was eating and as I was playing oniine and couldn't pause I did the simple thing and kicked him in teh nuts and he flipped out and punched me several times until he realised I wasn't resisting at all cos cos Mario Strikers and then I got my chips back. I'll apologise in the morning for kicking him in the nuts.

If I can handle him I'm sure you can, Rab. ;)

He was actually mentioning this as we were going to the gas station (apparently he's done this **** before and was well prepared?). He's on his loose now and I'm sure he'll get what he needs. He actually called me a few minutes ago asking if I was still shook up over the whole thing. I said no because I had finally managed to pass out. He just asked me to shut off his computer and stuff and said he will probably be back in a day or two to get some things.

I LOLed.
Thanks for the kind words everybody. And remember that no matter what you think is the worst case scenario, there's always something waiting to expand your horizons (of what crazy is).

Damn, where in California do you live? If it was in a major city, then I guess it's normal. I'm moving out into an apartment or a house soon with friends. Now I'm scared of having my friend's friends over now (lol)

Sorta-Mega Update:
Crazy McFuckNuts was just arrested last night for a hit and run vehicular manslaughter. My friend just called me this morning and said he heard it on the news, so I got up and checked the interwebs to find his name mentioned, the car he drives, and his age all confirming that it was him.
****, now I'll never get his stuff out of my house.

No kidding. Anyone know a typical sentence for something like this? Am I going to have to worry about an old friend leaving prison 30 years from now who blames me for his downward spiral back into drugs who has spent all his time in the joint plotting his revenge?
The weird thing is, while he was doing this I was sitting on my couch SIMULATING hit-and-run vehicular manslaughter. :-\

I think I'll call up his grandparents and see what's going on first. That's if they want to talk to me, I'm sure they have their hands full right now. If I can't get ahold of anyone and he goes to jail, I'll probably just get it hauled off somewhere.

Depends on a lot of factors, such as if he was intoxicated or not...The fact that it was a hit-and-run will probably give him at least a couple years...

I think the fact that is was MANSLAUGHTER might give him a few years, like ten. EDIT: Seems like I may be overstating this.
Call his grandparents. He wont actually be sentanced for a few months. There's plenty of time to get him his stuff back. Lord knows he'll need the money to pay for drugs in prison.

I called them but got no answer. His phone is off, I thought maybe someone else may have it. Do cops confiscate that stuff or give it to family?
And yeah, I don't know what he was on, but the news report says "under the influence of a controlled substance."

Maybe the rules are different there in Australia, but here in the U.S. you can get as little as one year for manslaughter, or not even get any time at all if it the conditions are right...

OBJECTION! Mr Maverick is not (heh I assume) a psychiatrist and is therefore not capable of diagnosing the crazy housemate in that way. (Don't mind me I'm actually doing an evidence assignment right now that has to do with this stuff somewhat.)

This is true. Besides, my experience earlier isn't related to this case, and I don't know how the cops would take to me calling them up and saying, "Hey that guy you got locked up for vehicular manslaughter? He went crazy on me and my roommate about a month ago and threatened us with a knife. Thought you'd like to know, see ya!"
