The Nintendo DS was the top hardware seller for September, moving 524,200 units. The PlayStation 3 was the top-selling console for the month of September at 491,800 units, thanks to both the release of a new slim console and a price drop. The Wii came third with 462,800 units sold. All consoles saw a significant rise in sales thanks to their recent price cuts, with PlayStation 3 benefitting the most with double the sales of the previous month.
On the software sales side, Nintendo grabbed three of the top 10 slots. Halo 3: ODST was the best seller for September at 1.5 million, with Wii Sports Resort coming in at number two with 442,900 copies sold. At number four was Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story with 258,000 units sold. Even though the Xbox 360 version of The Beatles: Rock Band was the best selling version, the Wii version arrived at number 10 with 208,600 copies sold.

So... With better software and a better (and earlier) price drop and a redesign on the hardware, the PS3 only managed to outsell the Wii by about 6%? Combined with the fact that so many people already own Wiis - and don't own PS3s?
You can have this win, Sony.
PS: The DS outsold the PS3 by a larger percentage (7%) without a price drop. In fact, it basically had a price increase. And everyone already has three DS's. (I do, at least...)
Oh, it's a win they and the fanboys will run to the ground, no matter if the win was by 1 percent or a 100 percent.
Wow. Never thought I'd see the PS3 outsell the Wii, but as others said, not too many people were waiting on a Wii price drop.
When do we normally get the NPD Top 10 for specific consoles or is that typically leaked at random? I want to see what the Wii's Top 10 games are.
PS3 is looking mighty tempting right now as I was on the edge before.
It is amazing that the numbers were so close given the price drop, redesign, and release of one of the most well reviewed single player _core_ games in years on PS3.
However, the fact that it did bump just goes to show that the 360 should be a bit scared. The PlayStation brand isn't as dead as Microsoft execs would like to believe. All it takes is a bit more of an installed base, more and more 360 exclusives will come to PS3 as well, and then the small things like the Blu Ray player will start making a difference to a lot of potential buyers.
Edit: Er... wait... I guess Uncharted came out in October didn't it.. meh, point is still valid I think.
Once Blackula Wii rises following the ritual mass SACRIFICE of american turkeys, existing Wii owners will pickup new Blackula Wiis just to be fashionable, just like the DS situation.
All the insecure people who don't have the current French Vanilla Wii will also go for it.
Lindy must be ecstatic.

I really couldn't care less. A sales spike in any one month is meaningless in the big picture. The PS3 will be back down to 150K next month, the Wii will keep selling four times that, nothing to see here.
Shouldn't you be playing Smarty Pants?
Where is the Go? Hmm. I still need a psp...
In my opinion the only thing that 360 has going for it over the PS3 right now is it's online integration. Having only one benefit over your competition should not be a comfortable place.
Wait six months. Its price will drop like a stone, and Amazon will start discounting downloadable PSP games.
The PSP Go is like a product with zero pros. It comes across as inferior to the normal PSP in almost every way. How is download-only a pro? See all those PSP games on store shelves? This plays NONE of them! And you pay MORE MONEY for this restriction! WOW!
The PS3 price drop was almost like a second launch. Sony just plain priced that thing way too high. Most pricecuts are about getting fencesitters to go "oh why not". That's who the Wii price cut is for. But with the PS3 there were people that wanted a PS3 and planned to get one once the price came down. These aren't fencesitters and these aren't impulse buys. These are people that would have bought a PS3 a while ago if the price wasn't so high.
The Wii is untouchable but Sony probably has a real chance of being number two now. The playing field is now level. The Xbox 360 with its RROD is probably in big trouble.
Double? What? When did that happen? I thought it was closer to even, with the PS3 trailing by a few million units... which, when combined with the people who have bought replacement 360's (and, personally, I feel there are a *lot* of them), it seems they're probably pretty close.

I don't think 360 is in any trouble, worldwide it still has double the sales of PS3. Natal could be a big boost for MS too.
But with Go as a platform puts it at a whole other magnitude of "what the hell are you trying?" compared to those two little peripherals.
It's not just any enemy crab, it's a giant enemy crab.

So where do we hit Sony for massive damage, then? :D

Considering I've met people who have bought 3 or 4 Xbox 360s due to the RROD I think Microsoft's sales figures are somewhat artificial. Still they might win in sales totals but Sony can challenge them in userbase, which will have more of an effect on game sales.
well, i really enjoyed two things with that.. the clipped together multi shot and ripple.. ripple was fun and neat.. anyone see the dvd drive rip away before they cut to another angle?
The RROD is why I'll never buy a 360. No matter how cheap.

The RROD stopped being a problem long ago. Even at the height of the problem, it was only affecting a small percentage of systems (less than 10%). There is no reason to not get a Xbox 360.
I think most 360 exclusives are pretty meh for the most part. Halo 3/ODST, Forza, Mass Effect, Fable, Gears, GTA IV DLC...nothing too terribly special there, as far as my tastes go.
This is NPD related, so I will post this here. According to Industry Gamers, NPD numbers show that Dead Space: Extraction only sold 9,000 copies for the September period. http://www.industrygamers.com/news/dead-space-extraction-sells-a-mere-9000-copies-on-wii/ (http://www.industrygamers.com/news/dead-space-extraction-sells-a-mere-9000-copies-on-wii/)
EA spent $9 on Dead Sales Extraction marketing. Shows how much they cared about it, how much consumer attention they wanted to grab.

I said this somewhere else, but if it weren't for the forums, I wouldn't have even known this game was out yet as I haven't seen a single ad for it anywhere on TV.

You're forgetting ONE important score. Geo Wars 1 and 2. I'm tempted to throw down 200 just to have it in HD. I have Super Star Dust but it just doesn't do it for me, thought Everyday Shooter is a worthy diversion.

I'm surprised that we haven't gotten a WiiWare edition of Geometry Wars 2. I know the disc based version didn't sell so well, but WW would have low overhead and I'm sure more people would get it at $5-$10 versus people viewing the disc-based game as a bloated, overpriced downloadable game.

A lot of people don't browse the forums and only check out threads of the articles posted on the front page.
