Title: Second Annual Secret Santa: Thread Of Joy
Post by: EasyCure on December 01, 2008, 07:50:48 PM
Thats right folks, its that time again. You might remember last years secret santa gift exchange, well its back now and I want input from anyone interested in joining in.
Last years went off almost without a hitch, I believe some region issues came up and maybe a couple of gifts were recieved late, but nothing discouraging enough to keep us from doing this again. Now, obviously this is the sign-up thread so all those interested in participating please do so, but before you do please be sure to read the rules! Also, I will gladly take any and all feedback into consideration. If you participated last year, tell me what worked and what didn't so that this year can go even smoother. I'm all ears!
Now for the rules!
1. Please only post in this thread if you're signing up, or at the very least include some form of saying you're in or out in bold to make participants easy to track.
2. If you sign-up to give a gift, you MUST GIVE A GIFT. My biggest fear last year was a lot of outsiders joining the forums to sign up for this thread just to recieve gifts, but never gift others. Please don't do this to your fellow forum goers.
3. In your sign-up post, please include the following:
- Your Wii Friend Code - Your Wii's Region (ie US/Canada/Euro/Aus) - A small wish list of games you'd like, from any system
We'll keep it in this simple format, borrowed from last year. Speaking of last year, you can use the link supplied above to find your friend code if you're too lazy to turn on your wii, or you can check out The Real Friend Code List although there are of course some new members not included on that list.
I think thats all for this post, all the main rules are there so start signing up. I'll announce a cut off date for sign-ups in another post (its still early, the month just started!) so you have plenty of time to spread the word among the forums; i know not every one might come across this thread (like Iansane). Remember, if you got suggestions, i wanna hear 'em!
As mentioned last year: This is not to be derailed into a religious discussion. This is a gift exchange only so if you feel like giving a gift, please do so. There is no barrier of faith or personal beliefs being imposed here so there is no need to discuss it. Such topics are against forum rules any how so ha!
Almost forgot to mention, unlike last year I will personally be hosting this event since I have easier access to the forums now with my nifty new phone. Feel free to PM me about anything if you wish not to discuss it in the thread.
PS. Sorry for the mishap before, I'll explain shortly

Thanks EC for going along with my (delirious?)letter to my (November?)Secret Santa thread (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=26794.0) in the funhouse.
I know my real Secret Santa will never let something like that happen in real life. It was all like a really bad dream. Secret Santa would never let the 25th come and go and not deliver his present.

I'm signing up. I'll post all the requested info later.
In addition to your wish-list, you should post what games you currently have as well as any games you definitely don't want. It might also be a good idea to say how open you are to receiving stuff that's not on your wish list.
What's the suggested dollar value? My vote's for $15.

From what I hear, if you try to send someone something they already have, you will get an error message telling you to try again. So no need to list off what you have. Only worry about what you want, and what you really don't want.

What he said. Last year got complicated when posters already had tons of VC games. A full year later imagine what some of these list will look like, especially including WiiWare titles. If anything, please post games you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT.

If I get sent something I don't want and decline does the person who sent it get a refund or do the points just get added to my account?

Spak, it wasnt this (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=26795.0) thread was it? :(
Your fellow forum goers (mainly vudu i think) have been suggesting 15wp maximum, but i think if everyone includes a game or two from every system on the VC in their wishlist, it'll be fair to those who might not be able to afford some of the pricier games.
I'm still taking suggestions as to when we should set off the cut off date and set the gifting date. It looks like last year gifting went on from the 21-25th. It wasnt a catastrophe but i'm sure plenty of you guys would like to get it done sooner so we can actually enjoy our gifts before having to do all the family stuff that comes around closer to the crazy Xmas thru New Year End of Holidays rush.

I think the price list should start at 500 points and there should be no maximum. People should expect to get at least a 500 point NES game, but if someone wants to go overboard, let them.
I see no reason at all to limit a maximum and say, hey you can't give more...because other secret santa's can't afford it...just don't EXPECT to get anything but a 500 point nes game. Though, I could see upping the lower limit to 800 wii points for at least a genesis/SNES game.
My only request is no WiiWare games.

Thats kinda what i said in my post right before yours... whats with you spack you're ignoring everything i post lately, even this thread! (lol)
If everyone just list a game or two for every system available on the Virtual Console that they like, then there is no need for a maximum since if Person A can't afford a $10 N64 game, he can at least get Person B that awesome $5 NES game that was also on his wishlist.
Obviously if someone wants to go overboard, why stop them, but no one should expect anyone to go crazy.

I'm on advocate of the 1,500 point suggested value because it means no systems get left out. If you choose 1,000 points your only real options are one N64 game, two NES games or one WiiWare game. (A NEOGEO game is also a possibility, I suppose because 900 points is close enough). But that means that SNES and Genesis games are pretty much SOL which is insane considering most of the best VC games are available on those systems. It also means that World of Goo is a no-go, which is the one game everyone needs to buy for one another. ;D
And if you say 500 points then the vast majority of people are just going to buy a NES game (or if they're feeling saucy a TG-16 game). Almost no one is going to spend $10 when they only expect to receive $5 in return.
Upping the limit allows people to get creative. It games I can get someone a very safe choice (e.g. Secret of Mana) and an "out-there" choice (e.g. Chew Man Fu).

I see where you're coming from, but the simplest and fairest way is to NOT impose a set limit of Wiipoints to give. Times are tough man, I don't know about you but I'm on of the many Americans questioning whether or not I'll be employed come New Years Day (I work at a car dealership and so far like 5 Salesmen have been laid off, why would they not fire me when my job is less important than that?). To say everyone participating MUST purchase X amount of wiipoints and expect them to give all of them is just wrong.
I said this once and i'll say it again i love being a turleif everyone puts a game or two from every system on the VC, your Secret Santa will have a range of price options to choose from. Its simply the fairest way, and it worked out fine last year, no?

We need more people to join! I planned on setting a cut off date for the end of the week but with such a small amount of participants, I think i should wait it out. I need everyones feedback on when we should be sending out gifts, so I can set a cut off date for sign-ups and assign who gets who!
I want this secret santa to be better than last years!

Also, just an FYI, I'm leaving for vacation on December 19 and won't be back until December 28. Ideally, I would like to send out my presents before I leave, but that will mean I'll need to have all my receiver's info by December 18 at the latest.

This makes me LOL The more the merrier, so if you want in thats fine by me. I'll add you guys, and anyone else who signs up, to the list later. I think i'll move it to the OP too, just to keep things organized.
I'll keep sign-ups open till some time next week, but i'm not sure the exact cut off date yet. I'll make an announcement at least 1 day in advance so its not a surprise to anyone.

Quote from: From the Original Post
PS. Sorry for the mishap before, I'll explain shortly
Hm, about that. Not sure if it was ever explained or not so I might as well add a li'l more meat to this post and do it here and now. BnM started that silly rant thread in the funhouse as way to stir things up on these, as of lately, dead boards. It was going to lead to an introduction of the Second Annual Secret Santa thread, but I'd never received the email he sent me prior to making his thread, so I ended up making the first Secret Santa thread, which i changed at his request to the My Story Time Thread. There, now you have the full story behind the confusion that happened there.
Oh and that reminds me:
I've updated my profile with my new preferred email address so feel free to email me any questions/concerns there, or of course you can always PM me (though my mobile email is the most convenient means of reaching me)

Can I suggest something?
In the spirit of giving, what if we use the 1500 Wii Points not as a maximum, but as a restriction. Meaning that you have to buy and give up to 1500 Wii Points. That way, you may give/receive more than one (or two or three in some cases) games.
What do you think?

I think some of our resident paupers wouldn't like such a high minimum.
It occurred to me today that Nintendo limiting DLC shops to in-game menus takes a lot of potential fun away from gift giving. I would have found it awesome to give someone Chime's bikini, for example.

Since no one's posted any of their info yet, I guess I'll start. ;D
Wii Friend Code: 4584 8871 6512 0150 Wii Region: United States
VC Games I Want: Act Raiser, Paper Mario, Shining Force II, Ninja Spirit, Kirby's Dream Course, Lords of Thunder, Mega Man III WiiWare Games I Want: Tetris Party, Groovin' Blocks, Orbient
Games I Do Not Want: Any Mario/Zelda/Metroid games--I still own the original cartridges and have played these games countless times. Harvest Moon--I'm waiting for the N64 version. Any sports, racing or fighting games (I tend not to like these genres). Anything else is fair game!
Note: The games I listed are merely suggestions and to give you a sample of my taste. Don't think of this list as all-inclusive. If you have something else you'd rather give me, feel free! Get creative! If you have a favorite game that you think I might like please share it.
That said, if you gift me something I absolutely do not want, I have no problem with rejecting it. I'd rather have something I'm going to play and I'm sure you'd rather not throw your money away on something I'm not going to touch.
Also, please note that I will be out of town from December 19 to December 28. I will not have access to my Wii. :(

Sign-Ups will officially close Thursday Dec. 11th, so anyone still interested in joining and hasn't spoken up yet do so before Thursday
Please provide all the requiered Secret Santa info in this thread to keep things organized. I'll add friend codes to the list on the OP as they come in order to make an easy reference guide.
Heres Mine:
Wii Friend Code = 8283 7169 9332 2685 Wii Region = North America/US
Game Wish List
NES SNES Kid Icarus Street Fighter2: Turbo SMB: Lost Levels
Sega Genisis WiiWare Shinobi III Lost Winds World Of Goo
I did the best I could to find titles across all platforms, but I'm not that familiar with the Master System, Genisis, Neo Geo or Turbo-whatever. The few titles i dont already own for N64 i either have downloaded or no interest in, so I can honestly say I don't want anything for that system.
I'm open to trying new things since thers alot of gems out there I might of never played, so surprise me if you like!

You got my hopes up. All you had to do was look in the Friend Codes forum.
3896-5984-8968-1451 U.S.A.
I'm open to nearly anything. I only don't want stuff I already own, but I'm too lazy to go through the VC catalog to point such titles out.
The search function is broken (and I'm mighty lazy), and I got every thing else from last years Secret Santa thread. The ones i'm missing are those who didnt participate, so its your fault!
I'll update the OP with your FC.

You might want to wait until people confirm their friend code. I know Smash Bro has changed his Friend Code since the Wii launched and I'm sure he can't be the only one. We don't want anyone sending a $10 game to some random stranger who now owns SB's first console.

You might want to wait until people confirm their friend code. I know Smash Bro has changed his Friend Code since the Wii launched and I'm sure he can't be the only one. We don't want anyone sending a $10 game to some random stranger who now owns SB's first console.
Each member is responsible enough to PM me, or notifty me within this thread, if their friend code is incorrect!
At least i hope so.

Friend code: 8050-5483-5267-1398
Wants: Lords of Thunder, The first Art Style game, Space Invaders Get Even + DLC, Mega Man 3, Star Parodier
I realize the point amounts here may not easily add up to 1500. If you only get it to add up to 12, 13, or 14 thats fine :D
And I'm open to anything else too. haha THANK YOU!

So how does everyone feel about gifting on either Monday or Tuesday? I know, I know.. the weekend is coming and forum activity goes down.. but if everyones able to put their wishlist up, I know I'll be able to assign who gets who, and send PMs out by Sunday the latest. Would that work?
If you'd rather not have it be so rushed, we can just let vudu send his gift out before he leaves and we'll do our own thing later on in the week. I need your opinions, NOW!
UPDATES!
I've added everyones Friend Code to the original post. You'll notice Dasmos and RAB are missing but they don't really count since they haven't posted here much, and theres no surprise in who is gifting them.
Also: SIGN-UPS CLOSE TODAY AT 5PM EST!
If you're late to this party, please provide your info ASAP! (Wii FC, region, optional wishlist!)

Don't worry about my thing, just schedule it how it works best for everyone else. I have no problem with sending my gift out early and the not getting anything in return for a week and a half.
If it works better, I can wait to send out my gift until after I get back, but I didn't want whoever I get to feel left out on Christmas.
Plus, if I sent out a $15 gift, maybe the recipient will feel generous, send out an expensive present, and I'll start a chain reaction. ;)

I like that logic. I'm still waiting to hear from everyone else but this thread/these forums seem to be pretty dead lately, but considering the time of year it is its understandable.
I guess what I'll do is assign gifters their giftee this weekend and if people wanna start gifting come monday/tuesday, do so, if not we'll wait.
By the way, everyone should be sure to add my friend code because depending on how generous I'm feeling the day we do send gifts out, I might send one lucky (random) participant a bonus gift. Maybe

Everyone should add everyone's friend code regardless. If you don't have your Secret Santa's friend code entered into your system he won't be able to send you anything.

Kairon post your info quick!

I don't have time to make a list, let alone check it twice. If my Secret Santa hasn't already bought something and needs a hint, try thinking of a game on the VC that surprised you by how much you enjoyed it. I'm hoping to get something that I wouldn't have considered getting myself. I'm sorry if that seems difficult.

I'm going to be up front and let you know that I'm not going to send out my gift until Wed. evening. I have a few points on my account, but I haven't yet decided what gift to get, so I might not have enough. Wednesday I get paid so I'll buy some extra Wiipoints then and gift as soon as i get home, so be patient!

NeoGeo Magician Lord (unless you know for a fact that this is a bad game! I know very little about it, as our weekly staff reviews are MIA)
The NWR review is right here (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/vcArt.cfm?artid=14711).

This is a brutal action game that ranks among the most difficult I've ever played in twenty years of gaming. Unfortunately, the difficulty comes not from challenging level design but rather from cheap shots delivered by enemies who are often out of sight. There are also many environmental hazards that you could not possibly avoid by skill alone. ... Magician Lord is poorly designed and not fun.
You might want to rethink that one. ;D

SNES games are compatible with the GC controller, though the buttons being in different places can make it difficult to adjust to, or even impossible like in the case of most SNES platformers.

Also, assuming you're a Club Nintendo member, does it show up in your games list? I didn't get any coins for gifting it to you; did you get them or are they lost forever?

Seriously vudu, thanks.
EasyCure, thanks a ton for Lords of Thunder, this game is completely awesome. I've only played a couple of levels but it's real good. haha The sounds outrageous and awesome.

ATTENTION SECRET SANTA: DO NOT SENT ME A PRESENT AT THIS TIME
I'm prepping to send my console to Nintendo for repairs (this is the second time, for those of you keeping score at home) and I'm not sure when I'm going to get it back. I don't want anything getting lost in the shuffle.
I'm probably the only person in the world who's been through two consoles already. :(
I see that Vudu has sent gifts. Does that mean he got his Wii fixed?

Nah, I sent my gifts out before I had to send my console in for repair. I sent it out last Thursday. I imagine Nintendo's received it but I doubt they've had much of a chance to fix anything yet. I'll probably get it back by the end of next week or the beginning of the following.
Good thing I have Dragon Quest IV to keep me busy. :)

Good news! Nintendo shipped back my Wii yesterday! With any luck I should have it by late next week.
So what did everyone get? Anyone get any surprises? I always like it best when you get a present you didn't specifically ask for. What's the point in getting a game you were going to buy anyway?

Yeah, no worries. This is the second time I've had to send my Wii in for repairs. This time I got my same system back; the first time I received a new one. Both times all my save files, friend codes, and Miis were in tact. (When I got the new system I had to redownload my channels/games, but that wasn't a big deal).

You, vudu and one other poster didn't recieve one because.. well honestly i ran out of wii points and have been too lazy to buy more (i dont own a credit card). I sent the gifts out either xmas eve or xmas day without mentioning it, as to be a total surprise.

A couple weeks ago Black N Mild gifted me Tetris Party. THANKS!
I'm enjoying the game greatly--it's Tetris! What's not to love?
This is my first Tetris since The New Tetris for N64. The infinite spin is going to take me a while to get used to. It almost seems like cheating, but it's practically required above level 12.
I'm horribly disappointed by Field Climber. I was super-psyched about this mode when it was first announced, but in practice it just doesn't work. That, or my brain is just too old to re-teach how to play Tetris. I beat all 10 levels and I don't see myself trying again any time soon.
However, I love the Shadow mode. It puts a great twist on classic Tetris game but it's different enough to be completely fresh experience. I've beat 28 of the 30 levels (completely stuck on level 29). In the meantime, I've gone back and I'm trying to get 100% (i.e. no pieces outside of the shape) on the ones I've already beat.
I haven't even touched the online mode yet.

I haven't even been able to put in more than 3 hours into SoM yet as I have barely been home since the new year started. I peromise to enjoy that game from start to finish again only this time with hopefully 1 other player by my side.

What would you like Decoyman? I'll get ya anything you like on VC or WiiWare.
I apologize on behalf of Toruresu, I did contact him awhile back and he said he was still on his vacation, i believe i contacted you as well to fill you in on the situation and you said it wasn't a big deal and you'd wait (or something along those lines) but this is ridiculous. I can't let this sorta thing happen, and I shoulda been more on top of it. Just PM me and we'll take care of this.
Don't let this keep any of you from participating in this years Secret Santa either!

Yeah, you were a good host, EC, no worries. I'd actually forgotten about it until DAaaMan brought this thread up again (thanks!). You did contact me awhile back, and I did say, "Nah, I'm sure he'll be back at some point, at which point he can get me the game." I don't know what sort of vacation lasts like 4 months (a good one, I guess).
Ok, so I'll take you up on it then, kind sir. How about Super Mario RPG (the SNES one)?
edit: oops, didn't read far enough back up. Thanks DAaaMan!

What an awesome game, btw. With Ike, Nephenee, Soren (maxed EVERY STAT, what a rockstar) and Haar, I could easily beat the entire game. Heck, Ike very nearly solo'd several maps when he was needing the XP.
