Whether you get the card or the initial download, a microSD card may also be required. UPDATED with WB statement.

UPDATE: Warner Brothers has issued a statement to Eurogamer stating "Players who purchase Lego City Undercover on Nintendo Switch at retail do not need to download the game to play." Original story follows.

Although the eShop may indicate a 7GB download, LEGO City Undercover on the Switch will have a big update coming with it.

Retail packaging for the game has come out and according to NintendoEverything the package indicates a requirement for up to 13GB of storage even for the physical copy.

The eShop version of LEGO City Undercover for Wii U was just under 20GB, and it is not known how much of the game is actually on the card or in the initial Switch eShop download.

The publisher could be trying to save money on a high capacity cart by splitting the data between cart and a mandatory "patch". Or, simultaneous streaming from the SDXC and game cart could theoretically shorten the load times for a big open world game like this.

I think cheaping out on the lowest capacity Switch card is most likely.

This reminds me of the mandatory installs that other consoles do.

Except those installs don't instantly eat up 50% of available disk space like this thing does.

Maybe cartridges was a mistake.

What other option was there? I guess they could have gone digital-only, but that would have pissed off way more people than this is going to.

I don't know. Maybe don't make a handheld and then try to market it as a home console.

And don't require an internet connection. (Except for the Day 1 patches.)

The disadvantages of this storage format are far outweighed by the positive aspects of the system. And high capacity SD cards are getting cheap. A few weeks ago I was pricing name brand 200GB cards for $35 new.

WB has commented, the original story has been updated (such as it is).

So, you only need the 13 gig download if you want the true ending?
