The information age is a massive failure! As a society, as a culture, we have more access to knowledge than any other time, but the majority are wilfully ignorant and lazy!

Every student having a tablet is certainly a huge improvement over having a couple computers over in the corner that, in my experience, barely get used. Tech only really gets used when it can be used for the whole class simultaneously, and except in rare cases that's only currently possible in dedicated computer labs, which have their own issues, including having to be shared by numerous classrooms, limiting their availability.

Technology isn't the problem and it isn't the answer.
It's how the material is taught to the students.
Throwing a tablet at them and telling them to research when the first Google result is Wikipedia isn't going to help them much.

Well then it's a good thing that in my experience that's not how it's done.

I wouldn't recommend doing that. I read somewhere in the interweb that they once did that to students at a monastery somewhere and they were buried underneath the tablets alive. See Picture Below

The only thing easy access to information accomplished is that it conditioned us to know where to find the knowledge, not to retain any actual knowledge.
When obtaining information was hard to come by (going to a local library, search through encyclopedias, etc), we had to write down notes to retain the information, and then re-write the same information into our papers.
With the internet obtainable everywhere now, our brains have no use for retaining the actual fact unless we're trying out for Jeopardy or something.

Retaining facts really isn't that important, though. What's important is the ability to find information and to process it, which is what modern schools teach.

Every generation thinks the one coming up behind it is ruining everything, and that the world is in horrible condition compared to the past. Go back through history, it has been consistently true for centuries. The present never lives up to the idealized, inaccurate view of the past people have in their minds.

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” ― Socrates (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/275648.Socrates)
Sounds awfully familiar.

Depends on your goal.
Sure, folks can use computers and such. But how are their other skills? Go read GameFAQs and check out the grammar there. My high school English teacher would hang herself.
So, is proper grammar (or something that resembles it) important? We all laugh when we see the sign at the local fast food joint that says something like "Try Are New Pizza", but it is scary to me to think that is where our society is heading.
Additionally, I strongly disagree that knowing stuff isn't as important as having the ability to access stuff. You need a good balance of each.
Let's say we set up a colony on Mars in 10 years. Do you want to send a bunch of people who don't know how to do anything except turn on a computer and see how to do something, or do you want to send people who actually have a knowledge base on how to maintain the day-to-day operations of the facility?
If you're in the first group, and something goes wrong... you're going to be in big trouble.
Knowing how to solve a problem exactly how everyone else solves it allows you to solve that problem. Knowing know to come to the solution to the problem allows you to adapt the solution to your own, unique situation.

To give a more practical application of what I'm talking about...
As you know, I work for a major retailer. One of my jobs involves auditing price changes and doing research to find missed markdowns (which lead to shrink - which is bad).
Now, when I started this position years ago, there was a process. It involved printing reports, digging through them, blah, blah, blah. I work in a small store and it took me a day to do it the way that we were told to do it if you looked up the official procedures at the time. One day, spent doing all this. Painful. I couldn't imagine if I worked in a larger store and the reports that printed were 3-4 times the size of mine.
But if all you know how to do is power on the computer and search "How do I do this", you're going to be told to go through these reports, etc., etc.
Well, I thought that was stupid, so using my established knowledge base, combined with the instructions I was given, I compiled a spreadsheet that, when you plug these various reports in... it does all the work for you. What previously took me a day to do can now be done in a little under an hour. Bonus, I can run this report for any store in the company from my own little computer. Extra bonus - it doesn't miss stuff. Let me tell you, going through the lines and lines of data, you can skip over things. This doesn't. Extra super bonus - I was able to refine the process of one of the reports. The previous way used weekly sales figures. My method uses DAILY sales figures. If you manually had to comb through daily sales figures, you'd never get done. So now, my report is even more accurate than the previous method. Super extra super bonus - At the end of this process, you print two pages (possibly more, depending on how many mistakes you find). The previous process involved printing a report that weighed about 10 pounds. In my tiny store. Spread that across thousands of stores. Most larger than mine. Compared to printing two or three pages.
...and now, stores all over the country are using my spreadsheet to do this process. Because someone, instead of just looking up how to do the process and do it as told, took their existing knowledge base and adapted it to the situation.
*PS: Forgot to mention, this process? It's a weekly thing. :D

Tommy has a five dollar bill, six one dollar bills, seven quarters, three dimes and eight pennies. Billy has a five dollar bill, three ones, two quarters a dime, two pennies and an Alpha Five. I think technology in the classroom is used too often to substitute decent teaching, rather than enhancing the interaction between student and teacher.
I remember too many times in college where professors would literally read their Powerpoint slides word-for-word instead of using them as an additional supplementary device to enhance what they were trying to teach.
I remember reading articles about schools that would give a computer to every student, and after the instant "how awesome" appeal wore off, I thought of my education experience with technology, and think "if my professors failed to use something as simple as Powerpoint effectively, then how the hell will grade school teachers not use computers for every student the same way some parents use TV as a babysitter?".

Now this I agree with. The issue is how to use the tech. You can, and I have made great lessons that incorporate technology in good ways, but you can't just, as you said, use the tech as a substitute for teaching. You have to incorporate it into traditional lessons and use it as a tool. Not every teacher is good at this, but based on my experiences today's university students in the education field are getting a lot of experience and training to that effect.

To be fair, I had teachers in school that would write stuff on the chalkboard or use the old-fashioned over-head projectors (that you used transparency sheets on) and simply read their notes that the wrote earlier that same day. Heck, I had teachers that would simply read out of the textbook (or have us take turns doing it).
It's not a technological thing. It's a poor teaching method used by poor teachers.

Both schools mentioned in that video can be and most likely are successful, because they have a plan, a curriculum that fits the plan, and teachers who are onboard with the goal and the plan.
You can have a great school in any number of configurations as long as you have the right people, and, to a lesser extent, the right materials.

The technology is a tool, one that can be used in various ways by teachers and students in the learning process. It's a means, not an end. You can do great things with the tech, or you can use it as a babysitter. When there are problems, they usually aren't caused by the technology.

not necessarily; sometimes I feel unmotivated to do something such as play video games and decide my time is better spend reading random articles on wikipedia or such, and usually those articles motivate me to read other articles. It's not long until I have like 10 tabs open and I'm jumping back and forth between topics...
like some sort of retarded Johnny 5... so I'm a strange hybrid of lazy/active un/motivated..

In my line of work those kinds of things are frowned upon, but they do teach us some nifty tricks that are just as effective.

"Jesus is the answer to everything!!"
Sad thing about that joke is where i live the public schools are mediocre at best while the catholic high school is locally known for its challenging curriculum and high standards. Where did we go wrong
Also im using a touch keyboard on a webfourm that is questionably suited to my phone, pardon my grammar

It helps that Catholic schools charge a TON of money to attend (one of the good catholic high schools in my city charge $8,150 a year for high school students to attend), so they can afford to have higher standards.

The problem with public schools is that so much of it is left up to local districts, so the quality can vary wildly from place to place. I know around here there are a couple districts that are just awful, and others that are really good, not 5 minutes from each other.
Local school boards have a tremendous amount of power, which most people don't really realize until they see it used, and the vast majority of people never pay enough attention to get to that point.

That sounds pretty in-line with how much schools get per-student from state/federal budgets.

But catholic schools are often funded by the Catholic Church, so they get that funding as well (in addition to donations from alumni and fundraising).

Considerably less, actually. Most districts around here are spending over $10,000 per student, though some of that is stuff like free lunches that aren't factored into the Catholic school figure.

Which bring with them a whole different set of problems.

The things you just said are either largely untrue or fairly insignificant, or both.
Actually they are very much true. In fact, a significantly large number of the Catholic schools in the US are owned by the local diocese and get funding from them. They also do various fundraisers to raise more money and often get donations from former students or members of the community. This is in addition to the large tuition fees they charge families. In the end, Catholic schools get far more money than public schools.

Catholic schools are owned by dioceses, but they don't generally receive a significant amount of funding from them. If you were at all familiar with the way the Catholic Church works, you'd know that, by and large, money goes from the local parishes to the diocese, not the other way around. With donations, that varies wildly depending on the school, but in my experiences it's not a significant source of funding for the vast majority of schools. Also, public schools do fundraisers all the time. Enough to drive people nuts.
Public schools get more money than private schools, because they do things the private schools don't do, and don't want to do. Things like English as a second language programs and the many permutations of special education, which largely don't exist outside the realm of public schools, cost a lot of money

I accidentally read part of this thread and I don't believe this is necessarily true, especially in places with high income disparity

You think high school is expensive...try my school (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Institute_of_Technology). At least it has the best ROI in the state though...and Richard Hatch from Survivor went here.

I'm picturing a big bronze statue of him on the campus, like the one of Luis Guzman at Greendale on Community.
