Title: Episode 287: Demolition Sherpa
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on April 15, 2012, 11:31:41 AM

The gang's back together, but PAX is still on our minds. So is... 3DO?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/29807/episode-287-demolition-sherpa

Fresh off our third trip to PAX East and another successful panel, Jon, James, and Jonny rejoin with Greg for a good old-fashioned podcast. Sir Leahy gets it rolling with Cave Story 3D, which of course he loves and has now played through three different times. Lindemann has just barely started the American release of Xenoblade Chronicles, but his early impressions spark a lively discussion amongst the entire group, now that we've all played at least a bit of the game. Jonny completes New Business with his initial thoughts on Tale of the Abyss for 3DS, as well as Metal Torrent, Nintendo's cheap and remarkably short shoot-em-up for DSiWare.

Later in the first segment, we start up RFN's "coverage" of PAX East 2012 as Jon and James describe their terrifying encounter with Way of the Warrior, a legendarily abysmal fighting game for 3DO. Following that trend is Jon's weird tale of Demolition Man, and more importantly, the mysterious stranger who provided unexpected and disturbingly accurate guidance through Stallone's monstrous game-movie blend for the same cursed platform.

Segment Two continues our PAX memories, but this time with a stronger leaning toward actual good video games. StreetPass is a favored topic across multiple 3DS titles, but we also played demos for (Bit.Trip presents) Runner 2, Hell Yeah, and Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode 3. Jonny gets his own chance at bad game glory with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for N64. And we share very fond memories of Chris Kohler's Retrogame Roadshow panel, which you can even watch online.

We didn't have time for Listener Mail this week, so there's a good chance it will feature on the next episode. Send in your questions and comments! You should also start playing MotoHeroz, the WiiWare game (from developers of Trials HD) voted by listeners to be the focus of our next RetroActive feature. Drop your thoughts in this here official forum thread and we'll read some of the best comments on the podcast! Finally, don't forget that the RFN t-shirt is on sale now, and proceeds benefit this show and the website, so we hope you'll check it out.

Motoheroz for Retroactive? That's not particularly...retro. Still, it's a fun game.

We've never intended to take the "retro" part of RetroActive very seriously. The WiiWare nominees ended up being mostly recent games because we felt that most of the worthy older releases had already come up on the show at one point or another.

Oh shitz, I'm going to love hearing how Jonny reacted to Turok. IT'S SO GOOD but also bad.

The 'I see you selected...' anecdote was hilarious. I had to try really hard to stifle my laugher on the way to work this morning lest people on the bus think I was a maniac.

Not listened to the podcast yet, but also looking forward to a Turok beat down. I remember giving up after fiddling about with the same excruciating timed jumps for a week or two.

hahahahah Way of The Warrior.  God that game is awful.  My friend had 3DO growing up and most of the games for it.  This one is particularly terrible... glad you guys got to experience that nightmare.

Can't believe nobody has posted a link to the Spoony Experiment video for Demolition Man 3DO yet:

Alright that was hilarious.  All this justifies this game existance and now that I'm fully grown maybe I should watch demoliti0n man again.

The 3DO experience was hilarious! And the saced beast has made his presence known, I couldn't help but laugh at Jon. ;D

All the PAX stuff was great to listen to.

That 3DO experience sounds like a great time that you'll never forget.  I already will be quoting that dude to myself in the future and I wasn't even there!

And yea, there can't be too much StreetPass.  Having too many StreetPasses is like when rich people complain about having too much money.  I would LOVE to spend a whole weekend barreling through Find Mii and filling out my Puzzle Pieces!

Not to mention grinding up Kid Icarus weapons and skimming the good ones for myself!!

Next year, PAX East, next year...

The name Shaky Jake had me cracking up.  Bad time to listen while driving.

All the PAX East stuff was gold.  Gonna go to one of these shows some day.

I was just listening to the Retronauts panel on people's favorite games. I believe our rainbow-hatted 3DO-loving friend was on it. Parish et al commented on his hat, and he also said his favorite game was Gex....on the 3DO.

I just finished listening, great episode guys! Sounds like I missed out on a bunch of good stuff when I ventured out on my own...

I wish I had spent more time in the retro room, but in the end I'm glad I can now say I've played a Sega 32X game (Star Wars Arcade). I had also never played or seen Turok in action, so that was fun. I don't know why but watching Jonny play that game made me nostalgic about the early days of the FPS genre. The power-ups strewn around, the blocky environment... they don't make them like they used to. Which is probably a good thing, but still, I miss the days when those games were fresh and new.

I hear you about PAX being deceptively exhausting. I thought it was just me getting old, but yeah, the days were long. E3 didn't feel that way.

I was there, and yes there was a guy with the Back to the Future 2 rainbow hat.

I have never even touched a Sega system besides the Genesis and Dreamcast, the closest I came to the 32X was a couple of years ago when I was in a local game store and saw them selling 32X's for like $30.

$30? Wow.  The supply must be low cuz I doubt the demand is that high!

I gotta say, as much as I joke about the 32X, it's only because there were never enough games made for it.  I thoroughly enjoyed the 3 games I had and think 2 of them are legitimately good.  Knuckles' Chaotix? Awesome. Severely underrated.  Kolibri? A beautiful and imaginative shooter.  Metalhead? Well, it was fun for what it was... which wasn't all that much =)

Indeed, Rainbow Hat Guy was at the Retronauts panel repping the 3DO.  He was ubiquitous. A legendary figure. Was he even real?  I'm not sure, and perhaps I'll never know.

LOL, the discussion on the 3DO kinda makes me want to try and get a 3DO and Way of the Warrior and Demolition Man.

I say "DO IT!" I doubt you could ever regret an investment like that.

Haha I actually owned a 3DO. Matter of fact, I think i still have my unit somewhere in my storage lol . . I owned Demolition Man and trudged through the game just because I thought it was cool that I was actually playing the movie :Q

There were some gems though. The version of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is actually quite excellent and was a picture perfect port from the arcade. Along with six button controller it may have been the best Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo edition at that time. There was also Gex which was an excellent platformer.

The system was also able to play music CD's. Alas lack of support and overpricing caused its demise and it became an obscure piece of video game history

Omg this episode was so funny! I was cracking up in the car when they were talking about the GDO experience and going through "Gran Theft Auto" town!

I have never played the 3DO, but when I ran into Spoony review a couple years ago, it gave me a new appreciation for Demolition Man. I love the movie and the 3DO game is just icing on the cake.
