Title: E3 2011 Day 1: Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, Sony Press Conferences
Post by: broodwars on June 06, 2011, 02:54:36 AM
Well, the long-awaited day is finally here: the first day of E3 and our first batch of company press conferences.  We had a thread like this last year for discussing the non-Nintendo Press Conferences, and I thought it worked out rather well with a few hitches.  This topic won't be as elaborate as I had originally planned due to an unforeseen family errand that has had me on the road for 12-15 hours a day for nearly a week now, and I won't be home until all these conferences are over.  If moderators wish to break this thread up into smaller threads as desired, feel free.  I promised I would put these threads up closer to E3, so I'm just making sure they're up while I still have internet access in this hotel.

As I likely won't be here to monitor either the press conferences or these threads (internet access in the car is extremely unreliable), I leave it to you all to post new streaming links and police the thread.  Please be civil, as I do not want a repeat of what we had last year with the Nintendo Press Conference thread.

June 6th, 2011 Schedule (based on Gametrailers.com's listings):

- 9:30 AM PST/12:30 PM EST - Microsoft Press Conference (Note: will be broadcast on Spike TV as well as streamed on Gametrailers.com and IGN.com)

- 12:30 PM PST/3:30 PM EST - Electronic Arts Press Conference (Note: will be broadcast on Spike TV and will be streamed on Gametrailers.com)

- 2:30 PM PST/5:30 PM EST - Ubisoft Press Conference (Note: will be streamed on Gametrailers.com)

- 5:00 PM PST/8:00 PM EST - Sony Press Conference (Note: will be streamed on Gametrailers.com, as well as IGN.com and the Playstation Blog)

Enjoy!   :D

Microsoft is the one that interests me most out of them and Sony, they have been super quiet lately. So I expect them to have a few big surprises. Sony's conference is interesting as well, but mainly to see how they save face a bit from the PSN fiasco. I think they need something big.

Busy day, very busy day. I'll try joining in the discussion between work (although on Greenwich Mean Time, these conferences will all be on through the evening and into the night). Needless to say, it's an exciting time to be playing games, no matter who you're following.

I wonder if MS will be able to recover from this? Halo 4 would've been a big reveal if it hadn't been spoiled. Hopefully they've got other surprises up their sleeves.

A Halo (1) remake piques my interest if only for amount of time I spent messing around in the first several levels of Halo in co-op.

Is Halo 4 even much of a surprise?  It will be the 4th Halo game on the 360. (5th if you count the RTS)  It would be surprising if the next Halo game wasn't at e3.

Has anybody seen the videos of Star Wars kinect?  It looked pretty terrible.

I've got both on.

It's funny because on Spike TV they have the guest commentary on the whole time w/ no game sound
on GameTrailers.com they cut the talking and have only game sound when a trailer is playing.

Ahhh GT.com takes commercial breaks too...

IGN's youtube stream is just game trailers till the conference.

Title: More MS Conference Spoilers!?
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 06, 2011, 12:13:59 PM
This is what Kotaku posted yesterday about what MS was showing for E3

Quote
This week, the E3 gaming expo gets underway in Los Angeles. Gaming's heavyweights are showing off new hardware and new games. According to an insider, here's the list of titles Microsoft will be showing:

Tomb Raider
Forza 4
Star Wars Kinect
Gears of War 3
A Halo related title
Codename Kingdoms
Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster
The Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim
Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor
Alan Wake: Night Springs (Kinect compatible)
XCOM
Hitman: Absolution
Modern Warfare 3
Spelunky HD
Ghost Recon rail shooter for Kinect
Dance Central 2
Kinect FunLabs XCommerce
Kinect Sports: Season 2
Toy Soldiers: Cold War
Fable: The Journey
Raving Rabbids for Kinect
An Unspecified Double Fine game
Hybrid (XBLA shooter)
Roller Coaster Kinect
Rise of Nightmares for Kinect.

Most of these games are not new reveals. Codename Kingdoms, the sword and sandal title from Crytek, was debuted at last year's E3, while Kinect Star Wars was shown off earlier today.

Other "new" games, such as Fable: The Journey, appear to have already been revealed by Microsoft domain name registrations. Kotaku first heard about Kinect Sports 2 this past March.

"Something" Halo related doesn't necessarily have to be a game; it could be a movie or a platform—who knows. Moreover, this appears to be the secret Microsoft is guarding closest. Other game titles, like Fable: the Journey, seem to be leaking out, but this title is under lock and key.

Let's be honest, most fps games have all been using the same play book for a while now.

Tomb Raider (2011) looks very nice. Not sure about the abundance of QTEs in the demo. Also, they should see in to toning down Lara's voice in the final release. She was quite chatty and moan-y.

Looks ok, it just seems like another RE4/Uncharted knockoff. But it is good to see it rebooted, and it may be a fun game.

I have over the air so, if its cheaper then DirectTV or Cable then it be an option.  I can see this being a good thing for MS.  I also think that THIS is how MS will be able to compete with Cafe is in the Value-Adds.  Casuals would like an all in one box.  Though something like Live TV would be better on the PS3 simply because it has Blu-Ray as well.

Like the starwars demo last year?

It does look like it's pre-recorded because it's not matching up with movements.

Kinect has so much potential for non-gaming apps. Gaming related sure, but not the motion tracking gaming part.

You need something to hold onto and buttons and stuff to push. A joystick would solve a few problems too.
a nunchuck and wiimote+ mixed with Kinect would be the definitive device.

I am really dissapointed in MS's showing though, it was really, well, average. They needed something extra and didn't bring it. Which sucks because I do like my 360. Of course I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 3, but that is about it out of its core games. I was once a huge fan of CoD back when it first came out for PC, but I got burnt out on the series. Gears of War 3, ehhe pretty much looks like the previous two, and I could never get into those. The Kinect games look fun, like the Disneyland and Kinect Sports 2, but still nothing surprising or innovative. The best news, sadly, is how Kinect is evolving, beyond that, where the heck are the games that actually are more traditional in nature? And Halo 4, um, cool I guess, if you are a fan of the series, but Bungie is no longer working on it.

Microsoft seemed to have played the show way too safe, and it likely means Nintendo (and maybe even Sony) will overshadow them

I have to disagree.  Microsoft played the show as strong as it could.  Stronger then I actually expected to tell you the truth.  The problem is that Sony has the NGP and Nintendo has the 3DS still and Cafe.  Microsoft is making a clear move to make Windows Phone 7 their portable gaming machine but, its not ready for the true push yet.  Next update probably but not now.  They literally threw everything they had but, with the hype on Nintendo they just didn't have the ammunition.

So it was a bunch of casual/kid focused motion control junk and the same old sequels?  What is this a Nintendo conference? HA!

Wasn't Halo Reach essentially Halo 4?  The series just seems played out now.  It's just the law of diminishing returns.  But it will actually be a new trilogy!  Oh joy.  Three more games in a series that is already milked too hard.  Halo needs a break.  MS is coming across very much like Activision where they have this small handful of IP and they just keep popping it out again and again and we care less and less each time.  Halo!  Gears of War!  Fable... again for some reason even though no one seems to like those games.  It really seems like MS has realized they don't have much of their own IP and they're kind of panicking.

Since they moved all the processing from the Kinect into the XBox anyway, yeah, there's no reason for that 130€ camera to be involved in the voice stuff.

Also I laugh at all the rail shooters for Kinect.

Overall, an okay-ish show. I must say, I really like the Microsoft style of presentation - very briskly paced, demo after demo, not too long on any one thing. I'm sort of surprised they didn't show more multiplatform stuff like Batman Arkham City or Bioshock Infinite, though.

As expected, Kinect was all encompassing, and I'm still not convinced. It's pretty obvious that nobody can be that ambitious when there's no buttons to press. The demos for Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, while kinda cool, illustrate this because the Kinect is serving a superfluous role. Are people really going to be rushing out to buy a Kinect so that they can talk to their squad or assemble a gun... and that's it? Same with the Kinect Fun Labs; that stuff was high concept and looked very impressive, but unless they show some interesting things to do with that gameplay wise, its appeal is somewhat limited. Finally, I know people said that the Wii isn't for the self-concious, but this is not for the self-concious. I can't imagine speaking to an Xbox and not feeling completely ridiculous.

Overall, an okay-ish show. I must say, I really like the Microsoft style of presentation - very briskly paced, demo after demo, not too long on any one thing. I'm sort of surprised they didn't show more multiplatform stuff like Batman Arkham City or Bioshock Infinite, though.
...
They probably didn't  want to overlap Sony.  The only real reason to show a 3rd party title at your event is if its exclusive, has exclusive content or something noticeable, you need Brownie points with that developer, or you've got time that needs killed.

Hooray, I finally have internet connectivity on the road!  I missed the Microsoft Press Conference, but from the sounds of things, it doesn't seem like I missed much.  I don't give a damn about Halo or Fable, but I'll have to look into watching video footage of that Kinect Disneyland game.  As a huge Disney fan, that's right up my alley, though I have no intention currently of buying a Kinect.  I rarely use my 360 as it is.  As for Kinect support for Mass Effect 3, from a pure artistic standpoint (the financial benefits to EA are obvious) I can only ask "WHY?!"  I don't see any real benefit to having Kinect support for that game, but whatever.

Looking forward to the EA Press Conference.

Wow, EA couldn't have picked a more generic gameplay sequence to show off Mass Effect 3.  It looks like any other 3rd person shooter without the dialogue and RPG elements we know are in the game. Still really looking forward to it, though.

Unfortunately, my streaming feed cut out during the Need for Speed demo, so I only saw bits of it.  That's probably the best I'm going to get right now, considering Gametrailers' huge traffic and my trying to stream this in the car.  The game looked ok, but it takes something special to get me interested in a racing game.

Try http://live-event.ea.com/e3/press (http://live-event.ea.com/e3/press) -- it hasn't buffered on me once.

This conference has been (sorry for this phrase) a mixed bag. Considering how long they talk about the new features of their games, I'm surprised at just how many trailers there have been with no gameplay footage.

Yeah, this EA Conference started just "ok" in my books, and once it went into the sports and social games it really went downhill.  I didn't see much of the Battlefield 3 section, but what I did see (all this footage of an on-rails segment in a tank) didn't really impress me.  It could be cool, it could not be.  "Meh" overall to the entire conference.

I would say "here's hoping Ubisoft's Press Conference is better", but it probably won't be because it's Ubisoft.

If the tank section is anything like the tank section in Bad Company 2, then you have full control over the tank.

The EA conference was pretty light on live demos and heavy on flashy trailers. A bit of a shame.

Thanks mate.

Looks like Modern Warfare 3 was shown. Yawn. They're making a new Tomb Raider game? I thought we've seen the last of that franchise but I guess they're still trying to make it popular again. Kinect with sports games could be interesting, if it works well. More sequels that are no surprise, other fluffy features for the XBox... I guess there were no surprises at this one.

Actually, that new Tomb Raider reboot looks pretty promising so far.  We'll see how the game shapes out, but I like where the game is coming from making the franchise more grounded and interesting from a storytelling/character standpoint.  The game could be another Other M (they've been talking up making Croft more "vulnerable" and "naive"), but so far they seem to have the right idea.
Title: Re: E3 2011 Day 1: Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, Sony Press Conferences

That's always a dangerous route to take. I don't expect them to get it right unless they've got at least one woman on the team, which seems doubtful.

On second look, there sure are a lot of Kinect games in the works. I had wondered if they planned to do more with it since I haven't heard anything about it after the holidays, but it looks like they're really gearing up support for it. I guess it may sort of be their "next-generation," at least for a while.

Oh, and a Halo remake? Really? The game isn't even that old, and its sequels are basically everything it is and much more. I don't see the point, but then again, I s'pose this is similar to remaking Pokémon games so it isn't for me to understand.

She sounded like a woman in distress half the time and an actress in Rocko's Gang Bang 6 for the other half.
They went a little far on the "vulnerable & naive" if you ask me...
Or has she always sounded that way?

I don't like my heroins to be "Vulnerable and Naive."  That doesn't reflect the reality I live with at all.  Which makes it really odd to me to see them taking on the world and be that way.  None of the women in my life are like that.  I think I be more comfortable with a Male like that.  Now Side-characters have fun their isn't much you could do with them that I wouldn't be mostly ok with.

Quote
I was able to get hands-on time with most of Sony’s big games before E3 2011. The following are some thoughts on these games as well as videos that show you more of what’s in store for each title. Sony’s press conference will announce some additional titles, including a new God of War 3D adventure, but these five titles should help drive sales of PS3 hardware this year and also keep PS3 gamers happy now that the hacking incident is over.

Ok, it was Far Cry 3, but it did look pretty cool.  I did have to laugh at the irony of Ubisoft putting out a trailer constantly repeating that the definition of insanity was "doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result."  That pretty much sums up Ubisoft in general.

It's not just you.  Far Cry 3 was pretty cartoony as well compared to the usual look for HD shooters.

I see a lot of inspiration from Splinter Cell Conviction in this Ghost Recon trailer.  That's a good thing.

I would hesitate to call what Microsoft showed new or interesting.  To me, a lot of it was the same on-rails experiences that were thoroughly denounced on Wii.  You shouldn't even need the Kinect for what they're using it for on Mass Effect 3, considering all you should need is a Microphone.

Dancing games are gonna get run into the ground just like the music genre if they keep releasing an update every year with no real improvements in gameplay.

Just Dance 3 better use the motion camera that Ubi made so that it can be a little more like the Kinect version.

If they are, I couldn't find information on them.  We do have the Nintendo press conference tomorrow, which has its own thread in the Nintendo gaming section of the forums.

As for Ubisoft's showing, I thought they did what they needed to do after last year's show: they brought the games.  I didn't care for many of them and the company's casual showing was just obvious franchise milking, but there were definitely interesting-looking games in there.  It was probably the best conference today, but the bar was set pretty low.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what Sony brings this year, though I may or may not be able to watch it Live with you guys depending on when I get into the hotel and how the signal holds up.  It was pretty decent during the Ubisoft Press Conference, but that kind of connection is pretty rare out here.

The height of that press conference for me was right at the start with Rayman Origins. From there, there was an ebb and flow to the quality of what was shown. I can't say I was a fan of the general theme of the show (referring to the pointless retro clips and the hyperactive host). That said, there were some surprise announcements, and a couple look alright.

Keep in mind that none of these companies can show off Cafe games until Nintendo formerly unveils the console at tomorrow's Press Conference.  There was never any reason to think the Wii would still have 3rd party support at this point, with Cafe already being a known quantity.

Looks like I'll get to watch about 15-25 minutes of Sony's Press Conference before I have to do other things, so I'll have to catch the rest on highlights and when Sony posts the thing on PSN.

I watched both the trailer and demo footage of the new Tomb Raider game, and it still looks pretty cool so far.  I also liked the trailer for Overstrike, though I notice that Insomniac seems to be "borrowing" weapons from other properties (the sticky inflating ball gun from The Incredibles), even their own Resistance franchise's Auger.

Yeah, the trailer was so short it was blink-and-you-miss-it.  I was in the middle of a page refresh at the time and could only catch the last 10 seconds or so of it.

Microsoft's press conference didn't impress me much. I couldn't care less about Halo Anniversary or Halo 4 since I can't play either without wanting to vomit (for no real fault of its own, I just get horrible, horrible headaches).

Gears is jawesome but it's Gears. Been there, done that. Still excited though.

Tomb Raider impresses me and I'm not a Tomb Raider fan. That's probably why I was impressed. This reboot is nothing like the previous games. I don't think they went to far with the vulnerable/naive Lara. Not yet, anyway. She reacted exactly how I would expect anyone except Batman would react in a similar situation. For an intro level, sure, I buy it. Within an hour or so, I expect Lara to not be so panicky. This is multiplatform so I hope Square Enix and Nintendo announce it for Cafe tomorrow.

Exactly my thoughts. I mean she was impaled as well, you don't just shake that off so easily. I sort of got an Uncharted vibe from the demo, which of course is a good thing. Plus Lara Croft is really hot this time. Day 1 purchase ;) .

Grrr, I can't get onto Playstation Home to watch the conference.  Stupid Sony not anticipating the demand.  Guess I'm staying on GTTV.

It has been atleast 4-8 seconds ahead of GTTV all day

Uncharted 3 looks good, more of the same just with grander set pieces. I'll probably get it even if it probably won't wow me as much as Among Thieves. To be fair, it's an extremely tough act to follow. That game was so good.

That Playstation 3D TV split screen feature sounds like magic.

We had a thread on it a while ago. MS was working on one that did 4 splits so you could technically watch 4 different things at the same time on one TV and everyone would see it full screen.

2 player split is still an awesome feature though....

but the presentation is SOOOOOOOOO Boring. Where is the enthusiasm?

So far Sony's press conference has been...pretty bad. The TV will be cool, but every other game they've shown looks like the same game (aside from Uncharted 3 which looks awesome). The apology for the PSN outage was basically non-existent and pathetic, and whatever they were trying to do with NBA2K11 and Kobe Bryant clearly wasn't working.

paint the edges(draw the path on the screen).... because pushing one of the 2 analog sticks in the direction you want to move is asking way too much.

The game visually looks great, but they are using eh touchscreen in the same way everyone complained about people using waggle on the Wii. replacing buttons with unnecessary touch screen interaction for things that would have been easier to just push the button.

The difference is that you're given a choice on Vita. You don't have to use touch controls. Nintendo forced waggle down everyone's throats.

easier than holding left?

I'm all for options, but these ones were put in a game that didn't require or need them.... atleast not in the place they used them But to each their own. It doesn't hurt the game to have that option but hopefully they will come up with better ideas with future games.

touchscreen on front and touchpad on back has a lot of potential. Sony just needs to be a little more creative.

The PSP Wi-Fi version is priced the same as the 3DS, and the 3G version is only $40 more.  Sony may have just fired a pretty damaging shot at Nintendo.  I'll probably pick up a Vita for that, especially since my digital PSP games will transfer over.

I still don't think Nintendo is worried about the price. They're launching Ocarina of Time in a few weeks. Mario Kart in Q4, possibly even Mario 3DS. They'll be fine.

I'll pass on Vita, just as I passed on 3DS.

Did Sony have their own PS Vita & PS3 Arcade set-up?
Damn, they really didn't want to be outshined by Ninteindo this year. They are having a Pre-E3 E3.

Still better than not selling your system at all because the price is too high. They need to sell it and get it in people's hands to instill confidence in the platform.

So Sony announced a version of Bioshock Infinite with Move Support, as well as some kind of pack-in with the first Bioshock?  Gametrailers mentioned something like that in the post-conference commentary, but I missed that part of the conference.  And there's apparently a Vita-exclusive Bioshock game?  Can anyone elaborate?  If that is what it is, that's pretty cool.

I s'pose, but they'll need some good software to go with it that will sell enough to make back the loss and then some.

They've learned the correct lesson: that there is a price threshold that mainstream consumers are unwilling to pay.  The PS1/2 were successful because they took a financial hit to release what was considered high-tech at competitive prices.  The PS3 was them assuming the consumer will pay $600 as long as there was perceived value for it.  I see the Vita as a realization that they have no leverage for competitiveness if they are outside of reasonable pricing with Nintendo.  Sony is fighting for market share with Nintendo at this point, not profits off of each unit.

For $250, consider me onboard for launch. I never owned a PSP, so the BC means I have a lot of things to play right from the start.
I'm there as well.  Never owned a PSP but plan to get the PSV.  I just hope Square puts their shamefully omitted PSN games to the PSN before the VITA launches.

Nothing else to elaborate on. Ken Levine finished talking then basically said, "P.S. - We're working on Bioshock for NGP," then he descended back into the shadows.
I s'pose, but they'll need some good software to go with it that will sell enough to make back the loss and then some.
They have a decent lineup. The problem is that every single one of those games has a PS3 counterpart. I love the Uncharted series but I already own a PS3. I'm getting Uncharted 3, but I won't buy Vita just to play an Uncharted game that will likely add NOTHING to the series. It will likely be good and I'll get Vita eventually, but it's not going to get me to buy entirely new hardware on its own. I'll wait for a price drop and for the library to build up.

Probably the best of the conferences so far. It dragged in a few places and there wasn't really anything unexpected, but they delivered the goods. The Vita looks interesting and that price makes it very competitive, so it'll all come down to the 3DS software line-up as the decider for which handheld comes away from this E3 with the mind share.

The problem with the 3DS, though, is that its software lineup is pretty weak so far.  We'll see how that shapes out after tomorrow's Press Conference, but right now Sony's thrown out a great incentive for those many people who didn't purchase a 3DS to wait for what's possibly a much better product with a potentially better lineup of games.

There's also a psychology in the price.  Nintendo flat out told us they're overcharging on the 3DS, which makes me feel ripped off buying it at $250.  Sony's likely taking a pretty substantial loss at $250, which makes me feel like I'm getting a great value at $250 for that technology and lineup of games.

Of course it is, but Nintendo is also the overwhelming market leader with a much more devoted fanbase. Sony can't compete by copying Nintendo, they have to try to beat them in a completely different way. They're price matching with more powerful hardware. Not sure that's going to work, but it's better than releasing similar hardware at the same price. They might have tried releasing similar hardware at a lower price.

To me, the glasses-free 3D is the very definition of "gimmick" and "fluff", so I'll gladly take better technology over something Nintendo doesn't even allow developers to base game design around.  Plus, the 3DS' display gives me a headache to look at in 3D mode, so it's kind of a worthless feature to me even if I didn't think it was a gimmick.

The Vita is offering shinier visuals as well as all sorts of inputs and communications. However, the specs have changed since January. They must've cut some of the bigger numbers from then to get that $250 price. Makes me wonder how much storage will be on the Vita.

Glasses free 3D isn't fluff? Seems like the very definition of fluff.

I prefer the 2 screen set up to the rear touchpad. That's really the main difference because graphically, I'm happy with what the 3DS can do, even if Vita is capable of better. Nintendo makes the games I want. They just need to to fix the battery life then we'll talk about buying one.

That's a good point, though it also makes it sound like the two are not in direct competition with one another. Which may be true; I don't think the PSP really cut into DS sales, and the DS probably didn't deter anyone interested in a PSP.

To me, the glasses-free 3D is the very definition of "gimmick"
Except that the definition of gimmick is an eye-catching feature, so it also applies to everything new on the Vita as well.

Funny enough, I'm with broodwars. 3D shouldn't be the 3DS's main selling point. Yes, glasses free 3D is an advancement in the medium, but the idea of 3D itself is no longer innovative. There are 3D TVs, 3D on Youtube, 3D on laptops, TONS of 3D movies. The 3DS has to sell first and foremost SOFTWARE. Even if the software sells the 3D well enough, if its of high quality and worth owning then the 3DS will take off. So in my honest opinion, 3D isn't the 3DS's best feature.

Weak lineup? I take it you have been sleeping the last few handheld generations, the launch window lineups are always weak to average at best. 3DS still has a great lineup of games, many of which should debut before PSV.

Also while I think Nintendo needs to do something about price now, Sony taking substantial losses to release a new system is not something I am happy about, and a trend that has always bothered me about MS and Sony. It is garbage like that which hurts the industry, and is meant to flood the market. Nintendo talks about iPhone games being a race to the bottom, taking large losses to sell hardware makes iPhone game pricing seem irrelevant.

In regards to 3D on 3DS, glasses free 3D is still a fresher take on 3D. The fact is that the 3D TV market has no standard, and you may be buying outdated stuff that won't even work in a few years. Not only that but glasses are expensive. While 3D has been around for awhile, glasses free has not, at least when it comes to handheld devices. There appears to be a double standard being expressed here as well, games are a key feature for any , well, game system so might as well say PSVs touch pad, and hardware power is fluff as well and doesn't matter.

The only thing on the Vita I see that can possibly enhance games is the rear touchpad, although I have trouble imagining how it can do anything that a regular touchscreen and/or buttons can't do. So, we'll see how it gets used.

That's the glory of capitalism, though.  The consumer can only win when we have price wars like this.  And while this price move has made Sony extremely competitive with the 3DS, they still have the win people over on what really matters: the games.  If they put out a lineup as weak as the 3DS' has been so far, they'll be in the same place Nintendo has been...only it'll hurt much more because of the loss they take on the hardware.

And incidentally, I hate 3D in any form outside of theme park attractions and whatnot.  It's a silly gimmick and has been a silly gimmick for well over 50 years, whether you watch it with glasses or on glasses-free displays.  Sony doesn't get a free pass on their love for 3D just because I don't care about the 3D display of the 3DS.

Why does everyone assume that Sony is taking this HUGE loss with PSV or even a loss at all?

3DS is WAAAY over priced. I think the estimated bill of parts and assembly totaled in at $150 or something like that. It is priced to make almost $100 in profit per unit sold. that is just downright greedy and one of the main reasons why I haven't bought in and have no plans of doing so in the near future.

If they took half of that profit and put it back into the tech, the 3DS could have 512MB RAM, 8GB internal and a beefer battery and GPU. take a little bit more and you could up the screen res and throw in that second analog for free. $2 more gets you that 3D camera setup on the inside too.

I would bet the PSV is near break even on price for both models with a slight loss on the wifi, but slight profit on the 3G.
I bet the wifi only model cost something like $260 to Sony and the 3G/wifi version cost around $285.
A 3G antennae don't cost that much and certainly not in the bulk Sony will be selling ordering for the 3G model. And I bet that 3G model will have abundant supply at launch while the wifi only version will be harder to find because of the profit to loss ratio.

We don't know for sure, but Sony's history is selling hardware at a loss to make up later with software and cheaper hardware revisions.  Even if that wasn't the case, though, Sony hasn't made the stupid mistake Nintendo made by telling us we were being ripped off.  That lets us make assumptions that tend to increase the imagined value of the product.  That's really the key right there.

Ehh.  Just a different business model.  Sony has always taken the razor-blade approach to system selling: selling the complete shaver for cheap while making no income or losing revenue (system) for the sake of selling as many high-margin replacement razors (games) as possible.

Nintendo has always determined that they want to make a healthy profit on their consoles & handhelds.  Neither method is poor if implemented correctly, just different.

There was an article not long ago stating the expected cost for Nintendo to produce the 3DS

http://technabob.com/blog/2011/03/29/nintendo-3ds-costs-isuppli/

Quote
The total bill of materials for the 3DS is pegged at $100.71 (USD) in parts, with labor adding another $2.54 making the total cost to build $103.25. That price doesn’t count the marketing dollars spent on the 3DS launch and advertising

Nintendo is definitely making a healthy profit per system, but if they're selling small potatoes, they would be better off moving more units at a lower margin for higher overall sales.
Title: Re: E3 2011 Day 1: Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA, Sony Press Conferences

The fact is that we don't know how much money goes into a single 3DS nor a PSV that is sitting on a store shelf. I really doubt Nintendo is making $100 profit, raw parts is just one factor in the cost of a product. Not to mention nothing is confirmed in regards to these stats.

I think Nintendo will be fine, the PSP released for $250, so I think Nintendo if they can manage it should drop the price as close to the $150 mark (not referring to parts cost but instead what teh DS launched at) as possible, even $180 would be fine. Then they should leverage the 3D much more heavily, getting off their butts and getting deals with various movie studios for exclusive 3D content. And of course focus on games first and foremost. If they can do all that they should be just fine against Sony's PSV.

The fact is that we don't know how much money goes into a single 3DS nor a PSV that is sitting on a store shelf. I really doubt Nintendo is making $100 profit, raw parts is just one factor in the cost of a product.

The article definitely states that is an estimate, so the numbers aren't absolute, but it wouldn't surprise me if parts & labor sum up to that amount.  If Nintendo is smart, they most likely keep a tight supply line, and purchase inventory in bulk to net discounted rates with parts manufacturers, so that estimate seems reasonable to me.

It also states that the estimates don't account for advertising, which is a large expense for any company, so of course Nintendo isn't netting a $150 profit per system, but I think it isn't unreasonable to possibly reduce the price to $225.  Not immediately, as I believe it would show a discounting of the Nintendo Brand, but I believe a smart move on their part would be to start doing at least game pack-ins or something if some of the new software coming out doesn't boost their anemic sales since the initial launch boost.

Lowering the price of the 3DS would be a significant sign of timidness.

When people look at the PSV and 3DS side by side, I think the value of glasses-less 3D will really be the factor that wins out. All Nintendo has to do is convince people why it is a factor at all. 3D movies and 3D games. Beat Sony at their own game.

The price point on the Vita is certainly interesting, and lord knows my 3DS hasn't seen a whole lot of playtime, but it's really sad that the only reason I can think of to pick up a Vita is that it's backwards-compatible with the PSP (it is...right?). Nintendo at least made a point of saying "all this stuff is coming out someday!," and tomorrow we should be seeing even more games for the 3DS. I firmly believe that Nintendo gave Sony an opening in the handheld arena this generation: from the looks of it, Sony has declined that invitation.

Maybe things will change come TGS, but right now it just seems like I'd spend another $250 for another paperweight.

You have a point as well, you can really hurt the value of a product by signaling to consumers that it is "cheap". That is why the Wii was such a success, it was lower priced then the other two systems, but not to the point of looking bad. Instead it said "Hey we are a great value, our competition doesn't have Motion Control!".  So Nintendo has a tight rope to walk here. 3D regardless of what some individual opinions may be, is popular at the moment, and will likely become the standard as time goes on. Ironically PSV is in a similar situation as Nintendo was with Wii when it came to HD TVs! Instead of HD, it is 3D

So, I recorded G4's coverage of today's E3 news and just fast forwarded through it and watched some of the press conferences. Plan on doing the same thing tomorrow and will try to avoid any spoilers of Nintendo's Press Event. I want to see the whole unfold for once without having read all the news online first.

But so far, from what I've seen, this is looking like the most boring E3 ever. Funny thing. When you fast-forward through the coverage, you realize how similiar most games look. So far, the only thing I've seen that's peaked my interest slightly is Rayman Origins I guess. The industry needs some new ideas. It's kind of depressing. At this point, I don't really expect too much from anybody. My Nintendo can spark up my enthusiasm again tomorrow (and they probably will) but right now, all I know from them is that they will be announcing more new franchise installments and more new hardware to upgrade to which is just adding to my feeling of malaise to the whole gaming industry.

But like I said, I'm sure when I see the Press Conference and I can actually see what the new console is all about and what the games do look like, I'll probably be changing my tune. However, this first day has so far wiped out my E3 enthusiasm.

Just my 2 cents on the day.

The movie studios are shooting themselves in the foot though.  I have to check online to see if the movie is really 3d or done in post production before I lay down the bucks for it.  Post production 3d really can make it look worse and it is hurting the image 3d first developed in people's minds with Avatar.

The NGP price is much better than I expected.  I think the system's biggest hurdle will be the 3DS momentum.  It is out, has units sold and has the majority of games already in the pipeline for it thanks the success of the DS.  PSV will have to do something amazing to get the games moved to a higher end and more expensive system especially when the first wave of big title will be for the 3DS.

Not sure there is a backlash, the 2D movies are cheaper to see then the 3D, that is a big contributing factor as well. Like Sixth said the biggest problem is people shoehorning 3D into movies that weren't meant to be 3D.

The 3DS is over-priced and Nintendo knows it and we know it. There are already strong signs of market correction with weak sales and falling "eBay equivalent" prices especially true here in NZ where we have a double whammy on price with the USD falling like a rock and NZ exporting more milk/honey than ever before. A NZ dollar now buys 0.81 USD and it's worse in Australia where they have gone past having parity with the USD.

Matching prices in all the territories will in itself help massively increase sales outside of the US, but doing the former and dropping the price to near production + shipping costs would cause the 3DS to explode. I might have a 3DS right now had it been priced traditionally at near cost and I absolutely would have a 3DS right now sans games if it had price parity with the US.

I know the games will be coming, I am not worried about that, but Nintendo got greedy. Sony is going to bleed with every unit sold, but their scarfic will hopefully get a fire burning over in Nintendo HQ.

I think a bundle deal will solve everyone's problem with the 3DS price. But I repeat yet again, Nintendo CANNOT drop the price.

As for 3D and movies, I deliberately only see 3D movies in IMAX and if I know they are made with 3D in mind from the start. Granted, that doesn't allow me to see many movies, but each time I do I enjoy the hell out of it. The last movie I saw was Tron and while the plot sucked, the visuals and music made it worth my money.

Price parity and a game or two would certainly move me in the right direction, however, I have no interest in any of the 3D remakes and without a fairly open choice or even enough games to choose from, the exercise is moot. Also it's an America only solution. It doesn't fix the overpricing issue everywhere else.

The problem with not lowering the price is that both Nintendo and the consumer are playing chicken and neither are going to blink since both know each others bluff. Especially now that there is a potentially viable alternative on the table, the buyer doesn't have to play. I would like a 3DS, but not until I have my terms or some way I can get a close match like I waited for the DS.

That's probably because Movie Theaters are charging an extra $5 just watch a movie in 3D and $10 is already asking too much for the regular version. $15 each person makes taking your friends, family or whoever out to the movies far too expensive especially when you factor in money for $10 popcorn and $6 sodas.

What you thought in your head was gonna be a $40 movie night for you and the fam just turning into a $80 hole in your wallet to go see a sub-par movie with sub par effects in a  sub par theater serving sub par food.

Yeah.  Not even taking Netflix into account its cheaper just to wait till the thing is on Blu-Ray and watch it at home.  Take the money saved and churn it into the Theater System.  Plus you can watch it over if you want or burn it like it  may deserve.  Once you throw Netflix into account it makes no sense at all.

Man...that reminds me.

I wish more theaters served food. I watched Rush Hour 3 at a theater in New Hampshire. You could order beer, chicken wings, and smoke to your hearts content. It was sooo good in fact, that I thought the sub-par Rush Hour 3 was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I watched it sometime later and realized what a kinda terrible sequel it really was.

I've been to one of those before.  You eat dinner and watch a movie its great.  Here you can watch 2 or 3 current movies for $7 per head at the Drive-in if your willing to put up with some things.  Though its a deal and you can bring your own food if you want.  More theaters should consider the dinner thing.

Hmm...just thought of something.

Wouldn't it be neat if you went to a place that had private movie rooms, kinda like how Japanese/Korean restuarants have private karaoke rooms? So you walk into a room that has a big wrap around couch and a projector. They take your food, drink and movie order (or you can bring a movie of your own). Then you cool out with whomever you brought.

Best of all, they give you the remote.

I would love to have a full on proper meal during a double feature sans the smoking assuming there was a pair of movies you wanted to watch that weren't complete **** for a modest price. Even if it's a drive in it would be pretty sweet too. Too bad it won't happen here, makes too much sense.

If I was a 3DS owner, I'd be pretty pissed if Nintendo dropped the price in less than a year. Nintendo doesn't absolutely need to drop the price (though it certainly would have helped immensely) because they have more and better games coming out. It should have launched at $200 at the most. Against PSV, Nintendo is fine. Sony isn't Nintendo's worst enemy here. Nintendo is. They priced the hardware above what most people found reasonable. Had they launched the hardware for less, they would have sold more and to paraphrase (I believe) Hiroshi Yamauchi: The hardware is just the box people buy to play the games. Nintendo got greedy. Gaining profits on hardware is great, but Nintendo's bread and butter is software and in a way, Nintendo just fucked over their 3rd party partners. Good job again with that, Nintendo.

Still the biggest problem with both 3DS and PSV is that they currently have nothing in the works that can't be done on home consoles. This is especially troubling for Nintendo since Cafe supposedly mimics the 3DS experience minus 3D. In a way, 3DS is the anti-DS. It's mostly offering home console games at a home console price aimed at a home console audience. What the hell, Nintendo? What made DS such a hit was that they aimed lower and wider. Most of the games were aimed at younger gamers whose parents bought them hardware or for people who could afford the hardware but didn't play home console games, both at a price that people in general didn't mind paying. If Nintendo wanted to reach the home console audience, they could have done so without increasing the price and swaying away from the DS's main audience.

The price for PSV is attractive, but still too much. It offers an experience too similar to PS3. If given the choice between PS3 and PSV, most people will pick the PS3. If someone already has PS3, most of those people will pick nothing. Sony released a full fledged God of War on PSP and it changed nothing. It begs to reasons that Uncharted, Resistance, and Mod Racers will perform in much the same way. The core gamers who buy console and handheld are the hardest of the hardcore. They are in fact the minority, especially in the handheld market. Honestly, both Nintendo and Sony failed on this front. Nintendo is just in a better position because they make better games and they at least have the option to drop the price. It's really not about power. 3DS games still look amazing and PSV doesn't change that.

Speaking of which, the PSV is interesting, especially at $250.

In my opinion $250 is too much for a handheld, no matter who makes it. Its not a big deal for adults who have a job, but the majority of the handheld gaming market is kids and has always been kids, and $250 puts it out of the reach for most of them. The reason Nintendo has always dominated the handheld market is because their handhelds were the most affordable compared to the competition. Nintendo's handhelds have always been inferior in power, but cheaper in price. This time around Nintendo is inferior in power and equal in price so this is not a good thing.

Looks like I checked back on this thread just in time. I guess I just knew that somehow somewhere on this forum someone must be talking about me.

Well, as I figured, I did enjoy day 2 slightly more but it wasn't so much because of the software. But I did really like what Nintendo showed with the WiiU. As great as the controller might be, what I found most interesting is that Nintendo made it quite close to a PS or Xbox controller in that they have two thumb pads and L and R buttons on the back. As well, by now displaying HD graphics, it should hopefully make things a lot easier for third parties to port stuff over since they were too lazy to do so before. If anything, I think it makes it even harder for third parties to come up with excuses to not port their stuff over to Nintendo now.

I kid you not. When I was done watching the press conference, I thought to myself, this has got be close to the console Ian Sane has wanted Nintendo to make for over a decade. It's got HD and the power of the competitors, it's got a controller that has some features similiar to Nintendo's competitors, third parties seem to recognize this as evidenced by the third party video shown, yet at the same time, it has some interesting new possibilities with it and you now Nintendo is going to find some great ways to utilize it. He should finally get his all-in-one console. No longer missing out on big third party games and still getting the good first party games.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether that third party support will actually come this time or not but after what Nintendo did with the Wii, I think Nintendo has made it hard for third party companies to risk not supporting them again. And again, Nintendo has made it easier a bit more for them to port over their games.

As far as the software, not to much. WiiU software was non-existant. The only Wii game shown was Zelda. While the 3DS had a fine software line-up, there wasn't any major concept that made me very intrigued. Mario Kart, Paper Mario, Super Mario, Luigi's Mansion. We got a bunch of Mushroom Kingdom games. While I am still interested in Star Fox and Ocarina of Time, the fact that I've played them before dampens my enthusiasm a bit. It's hard to be interested in Animal Crossing again and I'm not a Kid Icarus fan. But at least there will be a double dose of Kirby.

The final thing I'll comment on so as to keep this post from becoming even longer is that the press conference really seemed to kill off the Wii. They didn't show much for it but that's because there really isn't much to show for it. Wii has never had the best third party support but with the WiiU looking way more appealing for third party developers, I don't see them wanting to spend much time on Wii games for one year. Reggie's message was that Wii has an 86 million install base. But that large base has never seemed to help get many third parties on board before and I don't see how it will appeal to them now. It's looking like the last year of the Gamecube all over again. I think that's the real reason Nintendo's stock dropped. For it's largest current systems, Wii and DS, it's got very little software for the year and the big focus is on the 3DS which is just starting to grow its base so software sales will be lower at first because the base is just starting to grow. And you know that development in the company is going to be turning over to the Wii U as well now in order to support it through its first year when it hits in 2012. With this shift in focus, I think Nintendo will have a slower year.

"It's got HD and the power of the competitors"

It's a bit to late though for last generation and it's a bit to early for next generation.  At best someone believes the WII U to be 50% more powerful then PS3 but that's not an huge gap.  Since nobody knows what MS and Sony's going release but if anything from the past they don't innovate they just bring more power.  Which means the WII U would be hardware king for 2 years but as soon as the others release it's back to "underpowered" again.  Of course that's just going by what MS and Sony's done in the past but I can't see them releasing a console that's only %50 more powerful.

If I had to guess I would say by 2014 MS and Sony will be aiming at 3 to 4 times the power of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

MS is rumored to have an AMD Fusion chip (Krishna based) ready for production sometime next year. These rumors got mistaken for a possible Nintendo console, but now we know better.

It was originally planned for production at the end of the year, but an AMD worker made a comment on NeoGAF about having their schedule moved up to earlier in the year (I'm guessing that they were being rushed by MS, based on rumors of Nintendo having a new console).
MS will launch no later than 2013 as they aren't gonna sit on a finished chip for 2 whole years.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them push for launch @ end of 2012 though.

I have no idea what Sony is up to, but it was rumored that they scrapped whatever they had planned sometime last year and started over. So a 2014 launch is more likely from them, but I expect end of 2013 at the earliest.
