Title: Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest Heads to Virtual Console
Post by: NWR_DrewMG on July 28, 2010, 04:39:36 PM

The Virtual Console looks to be getting another 16-bit Final Fantasy game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/23781/final-fantasy-mystic-quest-heads-to-virtual-console

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest recently appeared on the website of the Australian Classification Board, meaning that it will likely soon appear on Virtual Console as well.

Mystic Quest, a simplified take on the Final Fantasy formula, was originally released by Squaresoft in North America in 1992 for the Super NES.  The game will be the second SNES Final Fantasy game to appear on Virtual Console, with Final Fantasy VI (III in North America) still unreleased.  Final Fantasy II was released on the Virtual Console in North America on March 8, 2010.

The game stars a character named Benjamin who must save the world by gathering crystals representing the four elements of the world. Many of the standards in other Final Fantasy games are absent, such as random battles and save points.

No release date has been set, nor official announcement been made regarding this release.

This is good news. I never played this game, but it was always on my radar, so I'll probably download it. More importantly, it's another Square Enix VC release of a slightly more obscure RPG.

It's always good to see a Square-Enix game on the VC, especially on the SNES.  I would have preferred to see say...Chrono Trigger instead  ;) , but hopefully this is a sign that Square-Enix is finally starting to unload their massive back catalogue on the VC where it belongs.

Minor correction: it was released in 1992 in the US, and 1993 in Europe and Japan.

This game was designed to be an introduction to RPGs, and was created in an attempt to get North America more interested in them (In Japan the game is titled "Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest"). As such, the game is incredibly simplistic, which will make it boring for anyone who has played an RPG before. The only thing I liked about it was the music, but that isn't reason enough to play it.

This game is always considered a black sheep in the series due to it basically being a dumbned down, simplified version of a RPG since Square Soft thought it might do better in the US. I am glad Square Enix decided to release it on the VC.

I hope Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger and all the other SNES RPG classics to the VC. I hope that service starts picking up again so that we can enjoy all the good games.

Virtual Console? What's that, Nintendo?

Cool. I have always liked Mystic Quest, and no, it was not even close to my first RPG. The battle system and exploration are simplified, but not too much. It can still be surprisingly challenging, and the presentation is still great.

There is a plump treasue trove of RPG SNES goodness that Square-Enix needs to bring to the virtual console. Bahamut Lagoon being one of them.

Give me Illusion of Gaia or give me death.

Give me Terranigma or give me death.

EDIT: Fixed. That's what you meant to say. ;)

Damn, you beat me to the punch on that.   ;)   Illusion of Gaia's good, but Terranigma is much better and it's never been released in North America.

Hah.. yeah! If there's one game on the SNES that I have thoroughly enjoyed more than A Link to the Past, then it's definitely Terranigma. I own the PAL cart, but a NTSC SuperNES.  So you can imagine that I'm badly wanting this game to hit the VC.  I can't play the cart in my console... even with a converter.  But I have played the ROM (remember, I own the game!), and it is freaking amazing. Best game on the SNES, IMO.

At least mine is a fairly reasonable request.  We're never gonna see Terranigma here--get used to that fact.

Why not?  Terranigma was already released in English in the PAL Territories on the SNES.  It could easily make the crossing as an Import VC title.  I'd say it has about as much a shot as Illusion of Gaia does, anyway.

It'll never happen because you want it to happen so badly.  It's the same reason we'll never see a bunch of great games that we want.  It's just the way Nintendo works.

I eagerly await the awesome butt-rock that's on this game's soundtrack.

brb, blaring Episode 41 of Radio Trivia.

Hey, I really wanted Ogre Battle 64 on the service and we did get that one, and that game was as unlikely as any other niche title to reach the VC in North America.

So no one wants Bahamut Laggon? How about Treasure of Rudras?

That's because there were literally only like 10 of you who wanted OB64 and no one else cared about it so it made sense to release it.  The number who want Terranigma is close to 60, which is far too many for Nintendo or Square Enix to bother with.

The battle system and exploration are simplified, but not too much.
Every battle is just mashing the attack command over and over. Dragon Warrior has more depth.

Give me Illusion of Gaia or give me death.
I own that game and I could never figure out where to go or what to do in it.
