Title: Wow! I just did something I never thought I'd do...
Post by: Chozo Ghost on June 16, 2009, 05:43:24 AM
I bought an original DS Phat back in 2005 for $149 and now I just bought a DSi for $169. I never thought in a million years that I would be buying a system and then 4 years later be buying a revision of it for $20 more!  :o

The DS is such a hot system that not only does its price not go down, it actually goes UP!

I'm holding out on a DSi until there is more than one piece of compelling software available for D/L.

Plus there will probably be a price drop or bundle offers or something the longer you wait...

But in my case I really couldn't wait because I sold my DS Phat back in like February and have been without a DS since then. I think I did the smart thing by selling the Phat BEFORE this came out rather than afterwards because I got $95 for my Phat which is more than I probably should have hoped for. But then again, Phats are pretty rare and since no more of them are being made I wonder if they might not be worth something as a collector thing, or will be worth something at some point.

Perhaps, I'm going to hold on to my Lite because I like having the GBA slot. Some DS games make use of it like Guitar Hero and Pokemon.

The value of the Phat will probably be determined by how many were sold. there are probably a good number of them out there.

If I bought one today (which I won't because I won't have the money for it until September) I would buy 9 of the available games. This shouldn't surprise anyone who's ever seen my signature.

Aren't there only, like, nine available games on there?  :)

22, actually, at least if you count the stupid clocks and calculators.

In North America i is 16 DSiWare games, 6 Applications (if anyone is wondering what the breakdown of the 22 is).

Stand firm, mate! Resist the temptation of Mario vs Konkey Kong on DSiWare! Resist the beautiful matte black DSi...I want one too...

Well, also, for some games my DSPhat touchscreen is wigging out a bit with phantom presses.

I'll probably end up caving in this Fall/Winter. By then some more/better DSiWare games may be coming out and we may see some full retail DSi featured games as well.

There is that awesome ghost hunting game that uses the cameras to take pictures of real life environments and show you ghosts in those shots. That could single-handedly sell DSi to me.

Here is a thread with some screens of the ghost game. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=28296.0)

Meh, Kairon, just get it. Grab all the Art Styles that come out (except maybe Aquite) and since it's you there's also the games from Gameloft (Real Football 2009, Pop Superstar and Asphalt 4) that seem to be retail level quality at 800 points each. They're cellphone ports AFAIK but seem to be worth it anyway.

Kairon, for all the money you've blown on crappy games you might as well get some decent hardware for a change.

Do it Kairon, give in to the peer pressure. Everyones doing it.  ;)

DSi = DS with a camera duct taped to it and some WiiWare rejects for DSiWare games.

Does that help you Kairon?

Well guys, my DSi came today! I like it a lot, but I am very disappointed that the web browser seems to lack any flash support whatsoever. At least on the Wii you could play youtube videos, but on the DSi you can't even do that, let alone more advanced things like Hulu.

This effectively means the DSi is useless for Web 2.0 stuff. Yes, you can do web 1.0 and such, but Web 2.0 is the big thing these days. Plus as a web browser I noticed it was horrendously slow in rendering pages... probably because the DS's processor and ram and so forth is very limited. Come to think of it, this is probably also the reason why the flash suppot was left out... maybe the hardware just can't handle it. *shrug*

But that's just the web browser. The camera thing is really cool, and while it isn't exactly a high quality camera or anything it is however perfectly suitable for the fun sort of casual picture taking that people do with cell phones and such. I also had a lot of fun with the voice recording thing and changing the pitch and speed of my voice, lol...

The much larger screen and larger stylus are a HUGE improvement over the DS Phat that I used to own, so that almost justifies the cost in and of itself. But I don't think its a big leap from the DS lite to justify upgrading from that. So if you don't have a DS or if you own a Phat then upgrading to a DSi is probably worth it, but if you own a DS Lite, then I wouldn't recommend it because for you it probably isn't such a big leap...

BTW, for a limited time it seems Nintendo is giving 1000 points free for downloading stuff on the DSware. All I've downloaded so far with those points is the Mario calculator for 200, which is pretty cool. Now my DS can also be used as a calculator, and since its mario that makes it the coolest calculator ever... lol. As for the other 800 points, I think I'll just wait and see what comes along.

I also love the matte finish on it and how it is now impossible to leave behind finger prints or have it slip through your greasy fingers and fall on the floor like you could with the older more slippery models.

So to summarize, in Kairon's case since he only has a Phat (and a worn out one at that) I think I could recommend the DSi... but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has a lite. The web browser was the selling point for me, but now that I see it doesn't handle flash I am kinda disappointed and probably won't be using that capability very much, but there are lots of other features which help to redeem this shortcoming, and I haven't even got around to messing with music files yet. The day is late, so this experimenting will have to wait until tomorrow!

The DS Phat seems like a cheap plastic children's toy from the dollar store in comparison to the DSi...

I love my DSi, the bigger screen, on the fly light adjustments, better control pad, and the ability to ::gasp:: go back to your DS menu without turning your system off and on.

I think we need to change our argument.

Kairon, you can buy lots of crappy shovelware on DSi Ware!

I think it isn't an unreasonable want from the system. They probably just took the Opera Browser made last year and just installed it on the system. Little to no extra coding and optimization done.

Actually I think it is worse then Wii internet browser, things just don't scroll right for me

Maybe an industrious company will create a better browser and put it up on DSiShop?

It is worse than the Wii browser in some ways but better in others. As far as Hulu support, I wouldn't say I expected it to be there but I did hope that it was and I wasn't sure... but now I am. But the real disappointment was that even youtube doesn't work, and that did work on the Wii...

^ Sorry but LOL!
The iPhone is anything but advanced, technology-wise. :P

Oh and back on topic, yes, upgrading from a DS Phat to a DSi is probably worth it IMO.

I'm not going to upgrade to a DSi until they do handheld VC games. Even then, I'm going to keep my DS lite and phat bc the phat is signed by the Brain Age guy, but it doesn't work any more, and I still want to play GBA games.

I plan on sticking with my DSPhat until the real next handheld, it just seems like a waste of money (which I have very little of) to upgrade.

Am I the only person who thinks calling the DS Hevy 'phat' is a massive disservice to the legendary device? **** I hate the word 'phat' it's liek it's the fucking 80s or something. Hevy meets all the criteria Lite meets.
