no offense its a great gesture, but I really think Virtual Console makes this so obsolete.
The battery backup for that game probably is gone already and that cost allot more than virtual console.
There's no better way to cherish a game than to own the original cartridge, especially if it were given to you by somebody that you love. The VC just feels so... artificial.
Those batteries are beasts, do not underestimate them. My original The Legend of Zelda cartridge for the NES still holds saves just fine, and that has to be at least 20 years old. The battery is pretty easy to replace though; all you need is a 3.5mm GameBit (real cheap on eBay), a razor blade, and some electrical tape (though solder works best).

I'm a collector. Virtual Console does absolutely nothing for me. As such, obtaining SMRPG in a box WITH the manual, in near perfect condition is pretty damn near close to orgasmic for me.
Also, as Mop_it_up already said, replacing the battery is actually quite easy.
Oh yeah, and I also had absolutely no idea she was getting this for me! Had I known she was throwing down with this, I probably would've stepped it up :P

Cooking is a wonderful tool! I love it. Are you sending me some roses as well for being so awesome?
Wait.. I guess she changed her mind. Its not sexist to expect women to cook.. hmm...
Seriously though, thats an awesome present. She really loves you to know you'd have a geekgasm over that, hell i would do. My gf bought me a master sword and hylian sheild once, for no reason :)

It would be sexist if you got a woman you barely know a cooking game.
However, chances are Mr. Jack knows a little something about his wife and knows that she would enjoy a cooking game. =P

Yeah. Who would know better than her husband that she needs to learn to cook? ;)

I can't decide if I love the game or the woman more?

So when are you going to tell us about the actual orgasmic part of your anniversary? ;D

I remembered how thrilled I was to find only the cartridge of Super Mario RPG. To me that was one of the highlights of my SNES game collecting. So to have this gem with box and manual must be pretty sweet. My top find with box & manual is Super Metroid. I figure if I ever won the lottery or something I'd update my collection to have box & manual for every game but while I'm still living in reality cartridges are good enough and boxes & manuals are cool bonuses.
Anyone saying "just get it on the VC" just doesn't get it. That's like telling a guy in a used record store that he can just buy it on iTunes. It's not just about playing the games.

My ex-wife bought me The Dark Knight Returns statue for our anniversary (while we were still together, duh). Its totally awesome to have someone who knows just how to make a purchase for you that you'll love but couldn't really ask to get.
Also, when I make classic game purchases, I only jump on those that still have the manual and box. If I can be bothered enough to keep that stuff, so can other people. Kids excluded.

I really wish I would have taken better care of my NES and N64 games back when I was a kid and in my early teens. Though I bet if I looked hard enough I could find a few of them (I hardly ever throw game related boxes away!).

I'm the opposite. I love digital delivery. I'm even tempted to rebuy PSP games as downloads and I'm not sure why. =P
I'm just upset that it looks like we may never see games like Majora's Mask on the VC because of the RAM expansion.

Collecting games is overrated. Now coins, that's where it's at!

You won't. But I will!

Kids were the bulk of the market in the cartridge era though. A friend of mine says his grandma would throw out game boxes if she saw them lying around because in her mind it was garbage.
If I was into eBay I would be much more picky about boxes and manuals but I limit my collection entirely to in-person finds. I have to find it in a used game store or at a flea market or the thrill just isn't there. In those situations finding a loose cartridge can still be a major find (ie: Ogre Battle, Earthbound). It's all about what you enjoy about collecting. If you want a perfect collection then the internet is a great tool for that. To me it's not just the game but the story of where I found it, what it cost, and what condition I had to settle for.
My greatest find? Star Fox Super Weekend cartridge for only 3 BUCKS!

I used to collect my SNES game boxes but my mom would throw them away constantly, so then by the end of the SNES and the early N64 days I would cut up the boxes and post the artwork on my wall, along with cut outs from old tired issues of NP (not just the posters mind you).
When Ocarina of Time came out and i got that special edition box... thats when started collecting them. I still have a shoe box with some of my game boxes (some with manuals some without) like PD, Goldeneye, both Zeldas and who knows what else.

I never heard about that competition cartridge, what does it have?

It appears to have the first two levels of the easy path only there's a time limit. I've heard there is also a bonus exclusive level but I'm not very good at the game so I've never gotten far enough to see it without the time limit running out. Supposedly the levels are slightly altered as well but I've never noticed. I guess I would if I sat down and did a direct comparison. I got it entirely because it was rare and really cheap but if I'm going to play Star Fox I play the real game so I've given the Super Weekend cartridge very little play time.

I did this with the stats thing on the back of Transformers boxes. I had a stack of those plastic red readers, too. Man, I wasted alot of time in my youth.

You stuck stats up on your wall? At least i was being creative making collages and whatnot, you really were just wasting your time!
I kid, i kid! ;)

my wife just lets me buy my own gifts because Nov. 17th is when Nintendo almost always releases its big holiday game.
