Title: NWR Awards 2007
Post by: Crimm on March 13, 2008, 04:35:59 PM
This is the talkback thread for the NWR 2007 Awards. (http://nintendoworldreport.com/specialArt.cfm?artid=15464) Yeah, they're late, but that's because we had to give every other video game award the chance to shine before we outclassed them all.
So tell where you agree, disagree, and generally your thoughts.

Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 not even getting a mention for its online play is a crime. The single player portion may have sucked, but it had controls that were at least as good as Corruption's and also were extremely customizable and managed to pull off 32 player matches with no lag (hear that, Sakurai?) and no friend codes.

While one might think that the continuing evolution of the console first-person shooter genre has made Goldeneye 007 irrelevant, nothing could be further from the truth.
Goldeneye was irrelevant when it was released. Really, am I the only person to have ever played Quake?! Not until the Wii have first person shooters even been a truly viable genre outside of the PC due to the extreme superiority of a mouse (or trackball) and keyboard over clunky gamepads.
Incorrect, Goldeneye was absolutely relevant. As a matter of fact, it was more than relevant, it was pivotal. Many gamers didn't really play PC Games at the time, and Goldeneye single-handedly brought FPSs to the masses. Look at console gaming today, there are so many FPSs you can't even keep track of them. This can be directly attributed to the success of Goldeneye.
Personally, I had played Quake at the time, and I still liked Goldeneye better regardless of the inferior control scheme, so that argument doesn't really hold water. I'm certain I'm not the only one who felt that way either.

The "best multiplayer" award makes me SICK! Guitar Hero 3 isn't a real game, it's for gangbang masturbation sessions. Wario Ware Smooth Moves barely even HAS a multiplayer mode! SUPER MARIO STRIKERS and MARIO & SONIC AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES win that category HANDS DOWN.
Metroid Prime 3 doesn't deserve a mention for it's controls, Medal of Honor takes MUCH better advantage of the Wii Remote. Mario & Sonic is more deserving. Stupid nintards.
Gotta agree with Sin & Punishment though. And Pokemon. Hotel Dusk not even NOMINATED though? Not even for BEST SOUND? UUUUUUGH

Hmmm some weird choices IMO (Sin and Punishment as Runner up for game of the year, or PH not even as runner up for DS game of the year or even Zack and Wiki for best use of the Wiimote).

Just like the Wii, the rest of the boards and the site, these awards are made of phail.

Just to clarify: many of the games being named here WERE nominated but lost in voting.

I would also like to point out that I had no role in voting or nominations. I came in after that was already over. Nobody on staff agrees with everything in the list, myself included.
Personally, I don't think Sin and Punishment should even be eligible for Game of the Year, but it is and it got runner up.

Instead of voting, a fight to the death in a star trekian kirk vs spock style would've been better.

How can the biggest disappointment be Brawl being pushed to 2008 when Europe (can't speak for australia; TBA don't say much) knew that from mid-2007?

Ummm, I refuse to play those games without sound. It plays a big part in the game.

That's still part of 2007. You know, the year the awards covered. So Europe can be disappointed too.
But we knew ages before anyone else. When NOE silently announced it into 2008 then polished it over with super paper mario and metroid prime 3 instead it got a quiet bootnote of "2008". And the world went oh. It should have been mentioned.

The nominees should have been listed in order to silence reader's complaints. Personally, I'd also like to see votes each title received, so we would know if a game totally dominated a category, or if it was a close race. (Even better, let us know how each staff member voted, so we can laugh at Kairon's picks.)
I'm also disappointed with the very slim pickings in the Staff Moments and Looking Forward To In 2008 categories. They add some much needed personality to the awards and give readers a reason to keep on reading (especially when three games completely dominate the awards).
Other than that, not a bad job. A little bland, but it serves its purpose. I give it a solid B.

I didn't even realize there was staff-centric stuff this year, but I didn't participate in any of it.
I'd give all year-end awards ever an F. But I give Crimm an A.

In all seriousness now, I understand your pain Crimm. I used to be a mod and an administrator at an obscure site and we got the same crap whenever we did our game of the year awards. Even worse was that it was all user created, so people chose the games and voted for them. I say it was worse because there was always someone complaining about a game not being nominated, even though we gave them nearly two weeks so they could find a game and nominate it.
As for Mario and Sonic, I agree with Mario in that it should have gotten a nomination at the very least.
In all honesty, half of you haters haven't even tried the game for the sole reason that its Sega, so you really have no say on this.
The truth is that the game has a hidden layer of challenge wrapped in its approachability. It may look like a simplistic waggle fest, but sit down and actually try to master all the events with all the characters, complete all the missions, get all the medals and trophies and beat the worldwide champions. You'll realize that it takes a lot of skill and patience to fully master the game.
In other words, M&S is a game that deceits its haters with bright colors, simple executions and family friendly appeal, but once you try to beat it you'll learn right away that the best challenges are those are seem the simplest.

Ah, the perils of judging art, especially when it's not like everyone on the staff has played all the games in question.
If anyone else is really into classic style game music (of which Contra 4 only represents the thinnest slice) 2007's Etrian Odyssey is also most excellent. The music is by famed composer Yuzo Koshiro (Act Raiser, Streets of Rage, Castlevania Portrait of Ruin and an appearance in the Brawl). Next year we really ought to consider adding a list of honorable mentions under the runner up. That game's getting hard to find though; the sequel was just released in Japan and I'm crossing my fingers for a port.

Ah, the perils of judging art, especially when it's not like everyone on the staff has played all the games in question.
And as you know that became an issue when I was dropped into this. It became apparent that nobody had played one of the games, best sound DS (Jam Sessions) and simply voted because they felt it simply MUST have good music.
I eliminated it from consideration because I felt there really wasn't anyone qualified to do the write up, and that multiple votes were throwaways.
So, to address one point, Phoenix Wright 3 actually came in third. I'll see if I can dig up the voting, but I think the previous person in charge of this process has it.

Don't lie! You clearly said that you had absolutely no interest on the game, much less OWN it.
