There will be one more year for the 3DS and Wii U as Nintendo's main drivers.
Nintendo's full year financial results have released, and with it comes confirmation that the "new concept" of the NX will be a March 2017 release worldwide.
"For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed “NX”with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally."
The Supplemental Earnings Report (PDF link) also confirms that The Legend of Zelda Wii U project will launch in 2017 on both Wii U and NX. A further announcement from Tatsumi Kimishima has also indicated that the NX platform will not be at this year's E3 expo, with Nintendo's presence focusing on The Legend of Zelda instead.
UPDATE: The Nikkei newspaper is reporting a separate event by the end of the year for NX launch details. Additionally, Nintendo has indicated the only playable game at E3 2016 will be Zelda Wii U "in order to provide attendees a complete immersion".
The NX Hype train isn't going to run forever.
The NX Hype train isn't going to run forever. If this is your first new console launch, buckle up.
2016 will go down as the year of Pikmin 4 and (hopefully) Mother 3...
1. Don't these announcements make it clear that Nintendo is pouring almost all of their resources into NX. Isn't that a good thing?
I think I'm liking this new Kimishima style Nintendo.
Now they're all like "**** it, we will release NX when we're damn good and ready." And they're telling us why, way in advance: "Cuz we want to have games for it, duh!".
Holiday season? "**** it! It'll be ready in March. **** you!"
E3? "**** it! We have Directs for that ****, yo. Also, we're givin you Zelda and it's gonna blow your fucking mind and you're gonna eat that **** up and love it. Shut yo mouth."
Nintendo is doing it's thing and it's making money and it couldn't give two craps whether the "gaming press" or the "hardcore" like it or not.
Respect!
And Zelda Wii U in March of next year? What the hell is taking that game so long?
Would Nintendo delay a whole system because of one game? They SHOULD have other titles in the works as well so in theory if the hardware was all ready to go couldn't they launch without Zelda and then have it appear in March a few months later? They could throw that vague "launch window" wording everyone uses. I'm thinking there are logistical issues with getting the NX ready for 2016 in terms of having the amount of units ready to go that they want or ALL of the games aiming for launch are still too rough to make that date or they couldn't get dev kits out quick enough for third parties to make that date. If Zelda is causing the delay then isn't the NX in trouble if it and Zelda have to go hand and hand? It would suggest that beyond Zelda there won't be much else around launch. Though I suppose it could just be Nintendo feeling that they need something big like Zelda, even if there will be other good titles available.
