Also a Paper Mario game, but that feels more like a threat.
Nintendo is planning to release remasters of several 3D Mario games for Switch, according to Video Games Chronicle.
VGC's Andy Robinson reported this morning that Nintendo is planning to announce Switch remasters of several 3D Mario games, as well as a new Paper Mario game. The remasters are planned to be announced alongside news regarding Universal's Super Nintendo World theme park and Illumination's animated Super Mario film.
The news was corroborated by a few other publications, including Sal Romano of Gematsu, who confirmed that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario 3D World were among the games being remastered.
According to VGC Nintendo originally planned for these announcements to be made during a physical event during E3, but the ESA announced earlier this month (ironically on Mario Day) that the convention would be cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Nintendo has not announced any specific plans on whether they'll be replacing their E3 showcase with a digital event.
The Switch: the place to go to play games not made for the Switch. This is a trap. Remastering games is a standard industry practice. Nintendo complies, and you complain there are too many ports. Nintendo doesn’t comply, and you complain Nintendo isn’t doing something the rest of the industry is. Boo-urns, broodwars.

I think Crimm said on a podcast once that Sunshine likely ran out of time for Nintendo to design a "1-1" level. I wonder if they would finally make one for a remaster. I'd really like to see it, and I think it would be particularly useful to help adjust to the Switch not having the "digital click".
Agreed. I would also absolutely love to see Nintendo revisit the FLUDD mechanic and design some new levels around it.
It'd also be nice if they made an actual final level as well. I mean seriously, Corona Mountain is just a few platforms, and then that terrible controlling boat section, followed by a very anti-climatic fight with Bowser. It's like the game was a month away from release and they realized, "oh ****, we forgot to make a final level" and just slapped something together as quickly as possible.
Does 3D World need a remaster? I cannot see them improving the way it looks or sounds. It would just be a DX release like the other Wii U ports. As someone who has still not played Sunshine I would be most interested in that remaster. The short answer: No, not really.

Most games from the previous generation don’t need a remaster, but it’s a good way to make the game available for people who missed it the first time around as well as a-holes like me who double and triple dip frequently. I’d buy The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD again, and I wouldn’t even think twice about it. I couldn’t throw my money at Nintendo fast enough.
A Super Mario 3D World remaster would definitely involve upping the resolution (because why not?) as well as probably replacing/reworking the Stamps that really aren’t worth much without Miiverse. I’d gladly take more stages. At the same time, 3D World is the one remaster I would hold off on since I played it most recently.
Oh God, that damn boat level. That's when I stopped playing and the fact that I was that close to beating the game makes it all the more annoying. It's a mortal sin for videogames to introduce some new or rarely used mechanic into the game towards the very end that has completely different gameplay then what came before. The game is about platforming, not navigating a crappy boat so why is the game putting in a choke point based around navigating a crappy boat?! With the rest of the game there is at least some choice in regards to what shines you get so if you encounter one that has some gameplay you're terrible at you can skip it and still have enough shines to proceed but that part was mandatory to beat the game.

What makes it even worse is the mechanics behind the boat are only used at 2 other spots in the game, one of which is a ultra hard challenge that requires players doing a lot of BS with Yoshi just to find in the first place so most players wont even find it. The other is in Noki Bay where it's used to get a Blue Coin that's above poisonous water, so many probably didn't even do that as well since it wasn't a required Shine Sprite.
It's pretty obvious they literally didn't have time to add more platforms to the level, so they just put the boat in to pad out the remainder of it. There's no way Miyamoto would have looked at that and thought "yeah this is fine" if the game was given a proper polish like all the other 3D Mario's.
