Title: Sequel to Zelda: Breath of the Wild Is in Development
Post by: NWR_Neal on June 11, 2019, 05:46:00 AM

A brief teaser trailer showcases the sequel to the Switch launch game.

A sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is in development.

No date or estimated release window was given, but safe to say it is a ways off. The trailer showed Link and Zelda exploring a dungeon where a skeleton started to come to life.

The Hyrule from Breath of the Wild was shown, but it appears to be getting torn apart by this revived skeleton and the mysterious mist oozing around him.

While nothing was confirmed, it seems to use the same engine as Breath of the Wild and take place in a similar map.

I get it. Hype and whatnot. My thoughts on announcing games (especially Zelda which ALWAYS gets delayed) is well known. I hope Nintendo does something new like let us play as Zelda or have Zelda join the adventure and maybe even switch between Link and Zelda on the fly.

I recall Miyamoto saying a while back that a past Zelda was supposed to have a party system. Maybe do something like that?

Hopefully it's a different world to explore.  If it's Hyrule from Breath of the Wild but with a twist then it loses a lot of what made me love that game in the first place.  I want to explore and if it's a place I've already visited, even if the details are different, that doesn't really excite me.

I'm fine with them reusing the same engine but I want a completely new land to explore.

Well the castle at the end of the trailer looks like it's getting ready to rise so maybe it takes them to a different part of the world.  Or they really go out there and it takes them to a different planet.  I mean one of the early idea's for Breath of the Wild dealt with aliens invading Hyrule, so maybe Link and Zelda will invade some alien world or something.

Wasn't that just an exercise for the team to start thinking outside of the box as they worked to reinvent the series? I didn’t get the impression Eiji Aonuma and co ever really considered that.

I speculate that we are going to explore a dungeon world underneath Hyrule, and pop up into the overworld that has changed somewhat as people are rebuilding.

Hoping that Zelda is playable. That feels like one of the biggest misses from the last game after seeing her added by modders. She could have been the "hard mode" after beating the game the first time, having Link take her place to fight Gannon for 100 years.

If the first game was a good learning experience for Nintendo then this could be something great. I'd really like to see some co-op added but that's probably just wishful thinking.

Maybe it's floating up to revisit themes from Skyward Sword.  ;)

Well, here's hoping they learned from making the 1st game and don't just puke out an empty, boring, lifeless game world this time full of so many things to do but nothing worth doing. I have hopes that Nintendo will actually put out a good Zelda game this time, and not just a collection of mechanical systems people have fun poking at.

I didn't like how every weapon breaks in the first game, even rare weapons broke really quickly. It's honestly the reason I ended up abandoning the game (I enjoyed the world). If they keep that for the next Zelda game, I might just pass on it altogether.

Considering that it's one of the most highly reviewed games of all time and sold gangbusters my guess is what Nintendo is going to learn from the first game is "keep doing this".

Personally I would like if they incorporated some level of permanent or repairable weapons, at least for rare ones.  If I found something really good I would tend to never use it for fear of breaking it which is silly.  Other than that I would like it if they could incorporate a few big dungeons, like how Majora's Mask only technically had four dungeons but lots of sidequests.  The element of Zelda where getting a new item opens new areas is also largely absent from Breath of the Wild so if they can find some way to incorporate that it would great, though that sounds really hard to do in an open world game.  Perhaps the "proper" dungeons could be located all over the map but what actual dungeon you visit once you find one is in a fixed order.  So the dungeon located in the desert can be accessed at any time but if you go to it first and go down the elevator the interior is dungeon 1 and then whichever location you encounter second is dungeon 2, etc.  That way it's still open world to find the big dungeons but their order is fixed and thus can rely on you having access to certain equipment at certain times.

I was fine with weapons breaking, but I want some sort of blacksmith and storage features. I want to hoard to my heart's content and display my favorites however I want. And I want the ability to either repair broken weapons or forge new ones from scratch.

Regardless of how well it reviewed or sold breath of the wild is the first 3D Zelda game that I did not really get into an enjoy, and that's going back all the way to Ocarina of Time :-( I do expect that they would see fit to "keep doing this" but I just pray they make a good Zelda game this time. Breath of the wild may have been a good open world game, or open air, but it was not a good Zelda game 😭

I like this world of Hyrule and look forward to going back to it.
