Title: Etrian Odyssey X Announced In Japan

How many dungeons is too many? We'll find out in August (in Japan).

The Etrian series will be getting one more round on the 3DS.

Atlus has revealed Etrian Odyssey X for an August 2 release in Japan. Serving as a celebration of the series, every class ever featured in an Etrian game plus the new Hero class will be available. There will be multiple dungeons spread across a giant world map as well.

Included in the announcement was an illustration DLC pack which includes art from an artist working on Atlus's previously announced Project Re;Fantasy. No Western release details are available as of press time.

I would have said that it was strange that another EO game will be on the 3DS, but since there is such a short time table between announcement and launch, it still  makes sense as 2018 is the last really viable year for the system (Mario & Luigi in 2019 notwithstanding). I wonder if this also indicates that they are having difficultly figuring out how to do an EO game for the Switch? I hope they don't expect big sales at this point though.

Hopefully Zach will be on NNR this week to give his reaction to the news.

WHAT?  I have many (but markedly distinct) thoughts.


1)  I am starting to believe that the 3DS is immortal.  We will still be buying new games for it in 2030. 
2)  X?  As in 10?  It always makes perfect sense to go from 5 to 10.  I never liked those pesky numbers 6, 7, 8, or 9 anyway. 
3)  Come on Atlus, don't let me down.  The US *needs* an English release of this game.
4)  What about an Untold version of EO3?  Come on it's a matter of life and DEATH!
5)  I wonder if this franchise will continue on the Switch some day?  It is horrifying to think it would just curl up and die like Pokemon Ranger.
10)  I honestly feel that there is a huge amount of untapped potential regarding map/level design and exploration elements.  Once I made a list of about 20 original ideas just for fun.  Some ideas have appeared in games (such as one-way bridges) but still most items on this list have never been used in the games.  This franchise still has a crazy amount of potential.

It's a "cross" (like Monster Hunter X, which we got as Generations).
