Title: Nintendo to Hold Two Evening Presentations at E3
Post by: Professor Clayton on May 18, 2014, 09:11:00 PM

One for Smash Bros., and the other a mystery 3DS game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37459/nintendo-to-hold-two-evening-presentations-at-e3

Nintendo has invited press to two 90-minute evening presentations at E3 this year. The first is set to feature Super Smash Bros., while the other is focusing on a “new game for Nintendo 3DS.”

The Super Smash Bros. presentation will take place Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. PDT, with Smash Bros. mastermind Masahiro Sakurai expected to be on hand. The other event will be held Wednesday, June 11, at 6 p.m. PDT.

Historically, these nighttime E3 sessions from Nintendo have shown potential to be highly intriguing. Some favorite examples include 2006’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl reveal, 2009’s first tidbits regarding the Wii Zelda game that would become Skyward Sword, and 2011’s Pikmin 3 announcement.

So far we know little about what Nintendo is planning to show at E3 in terms of new games, so it’s interesting to hear that they’ll be spending an hour and a half on a new 3DS title of a weight implicitly similar to that of Smash Bros. Feel free to speculate in the comments below as to what this game could be.

I'm not saying they won't give us majora's mask, but I am saying they wouldn't feel the need to spend an hour and a half with the press about it

I'm hoping it's advance wars 3D!

Getting everyone excited for an announcement and then spending an hour and a half talking about a Majora's Mask remake is definitely the kind of thing I could see Nintendo doing.

Surely Nintendo would not be stupid enough to have the 3DS going into Christmas 2014 with two remakes, one of a quality game (Pokemon OR/AS) and one that is decidedly not (Majora's Mask).

If I had to guess... probably something we've never heard of, with an extreme outside shot at it being Miyamoto's Last IP (tm)

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say this mystery 3DS presentation will be about a game that heavily features the new NFC figures. It's the new toy they're rolling out. They'll want to explain every minute detail about it to the press.

Yeah right, the Internet told me Nintendo isn't going to E3.

I would buy a 3DS for Advance Wars.

So if I'm reading this right, Nintendo is doing one whole Direct on SSB4, and another whole Direct on just one 3DS game?

These aren't Directs; think the Pokemon presentation last year.

Wasn't Monolith Soft working on a 3DS title?

I highly doubt this is the NFC figures.  That wouldn't make a lot of sense.  It would be about an exciting new product by Nintendo if that was the case.  90 minutes...  For the 3DS... The only thing  I could really see getting that type of time is a successor sku.

NFC would certainly be new, and "exciting" is a word Nintendo has taken liberties with already.  So, I think the NFC theory holds water.

But 90 minutes for one game seems like a lot no matter how you slice it.

Yeah, 90 minutes is pretty long for a single game. Aren't the NFC figures supposed to be for multiple games? I suppose they could just show one of them.

Metroid would maybe warrant a 90 minute thing but only because of all of the apologies they would need to make after Other M.

I continue to be amazed by how many people hated other m. I loved it (except it could have used a better control scheme)

Some people also like nailing their junk to the ground (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/11/artist-nails-testicles-red-square-pyotr-pavlensky)

This is just one reason everyone hated it. It tried to be a traditional 2D and Prime at once, and ended up being nothing but a pain

And don't even get me started on the "story."

Nope, I'm not authorizing you to do that.

Let's not turn this in to a Metroid Other M apologist/spite thread.

90 Minutes on a Metroid game.  Nope not seeing it.  There are few games I can honestly take 90 minutes to explain and show (says the person who regular provides over an hour of talking on a 3 hour show...).  Metroid is not one of them.  Now if you wanted me to fully explain Atelier Totori or any of the other more complex RPGs then sure.

Sorry, Shaymin, but Majora's Mask is the quality game, not Ruby and Sapphire. They're the worst Pokemon titles outside of Black and White.

Yeah, but let's be honest here.

Seriously.

Seems likely to be the NSFW stuff, or whatever the acronym was for the figure stuff.

It'd be pretty damn interesting if Nintendo were showing NSFW stuff.

(The term you're looking for is NFC, near field communication.)

One of the things I hated about Ruby/Sapphire was that you couldn't legitimately fill your Pokedex, even if you lived in Japan. Yes, the giant data structure change was like rebuilding the entire game, and yes, Japan got the unlocks for the islands that had Deoxys, Lugia, et al, but there was no day/night function, so getting Umbreon was impossible- Contrary to the series mantra, you could not catch them all. And that's a big enough travesty.

You could Umbreon (and Espeon) through Pokemon Colosseum

I believe the internal clock eould have been used to help you in that end somehow.

True. But I always felt that the internal was under-utilized.  It was good for certain evolutions, but you could catch the same Pokemon regardless of what time it was.

Whatever it is I cannot imagine it will be interesting enough to dedicate 90 minutes to.  It's probably some mainstream pandering casual game that Nintendo will want to demo to the mainstream media but will be of little to no interest to gamers.  The NFC stuff seems like a good assumption.

More like the LAMEstream media.  AMIRITE?!
