Title: How not to talk about the Your Mom video games
Post by: pokepal148 on January 27, 2013, 07:36:19 PM
Snow, rain and fog not enough?
Lets expand on that. Napoleon's army along with the German army in ww2 both fell to the Russian winter. Work on that

While true to some extent, Red Army soldiers helped a bit too, including my grandfather who died on The War.

You're both kind of right. The Soviets were caught off guard and unprepared, but they bounced back from that and basically won the war for the allies.

LOL, I think the Americans did more than the Soviets ever did (and the Soviet Unions didn't even join the war against Japan until AFTER we dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, at which point the war was essentially over. It would be like if a football player joined the game with only 2 minutes left)
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games

Not in the Pacific, but the Soviets were way, way more important to the war in Europe than the Americans ever were.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: TJ Spyke on January 28, 2013, 10:56:14 PM
Yes, mainly in that the forced Germany to fight on two fronts. They did help out though, no denying that. But no way they would have won without the US.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: NWR_insanolord on January 28, 2013, 11:01:17 PM
They'd have had more chance of winning Europe without us than we'd have had without them. There's a real chance the Soviets could have controlled most of Europe if they didn't have us pushing from the other side.

Nice propaganda there.
(and the Soviet Unions didn't even join the war against Japan until AFTER we dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, at which point the war was essentially over. It would be like if a football player joined the game with only 2 minutes left)
SU was in war with Japan before it was mainstream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Khalkhin_Gol). In fact, Russia as SU successor, is still technically in state of war with Japan as peace treaty was never signed to this day.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: NWR_insanolord on January 28, 2013, 11:11:56 PM
And yet the Soviets never took any action against Japan during World War II, leaving the Americans to fight them all by themselves. They were about to toward the end, but the US ended the war before they could start. It's been argued that the immediate threat of the Soviets getting into the war in the Pacific is one of the primary reasons the US decided to use nuclear weapons when they did.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: TJ Spyke on January 28, 2013, 11:12:57 PM
Not propaganda, truth. And the Soviets did squat in the Pacific during World War II. I am not saying the Soviets weren't a important factor, but I don't think they could have won without the US.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: NWR_insanolord on January 28, 2013, 11:18:24 PM
You really shouldn't treat it as one big war. The European and Pacific theaters were largely separate conflicts, and only the United States played a significant role in both of them. The Soviets were instrumental in the allied victory in Europe, and we wouldn't have won there without them.

Maybe so insano, the European theatre was won because of the US and USSR. I don't think either side could have won without the other.

azeke, I am not brainwashed. I love history and have studied it. Maybe I should mention how we won the cold war because the Soviets were broke and were gonna have a total collapse.

On topic, I really want a 3DS Advance Wars. Don't change the art style the series has always had though.

I think brainwashed is a strong word, and one that cuts both ways in this situation. The American thinks the Americans were the most important and the Russian thinks the Russians were the most important, when really it's a lot more complicated than that.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games

Okay one last post, since my last one was hidden with new page.

I am not brainwashed. I love history and have studied it.
I can't tell, cause in every single post in this thread you've been wrong on the most basic things. Like you didn't even knew that SU fought and defeated Japan during WWII.
US participation was like 1/10 of the entire War. The only reason for US to actually join in (beside lend-lease program was definitely a crucial help) was not to help winning the war, but to grab of Europe what they can and prevent Soviets to conquer it all.

Maybe I should mention how we won the cold war because the Soviets were broke and were gonna have a total collapse.
While true, what does that have to do with anything? What did you felt the need to say this? You do realize what you said is basically "U MAD?" after you've been shown that you don't actually know your history besides what you've been shown on HBO?

Anyways, i wish you a good night and a bit less blinding patriotic fervor.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: TJ Spyke on January 29, 2013, 12:00:27 AM
Um, I haven't been wrong on anything.

The Soviet Union did not fight Japan as part of World War II (the little battle between the Soviet Union and Japan was 1 week into World War II, and was before either country had entered the war). By the time the Soviets did actually start fighting Japan in the war, the war was essentially over anyways and they had NO impact in the Pacific.

And US only 1/10th of the war? What are you smoking? And the US entered to stop Nazi Germany from taking over (well, they entered to fight Japan, but I mean in the European front), they never had any intention of taking part of Europe. You are beyond delusion in your conspiracy theory the US in the war.

You sound like you are reading right from the Kremlin's Book of Propaganda. I thought you were just trying to be proud of your Russian heritage, but your last post is full of deluded, denial-filled, conspiracy driven dreck and false. If the US hadn't entered the war, the Nazis would have conquered Europe and then focused on and likely defeated the Soviets (especially once Japan got done conquering the rest of Asia and joined in on the was again the Soviets). The Soviets were essentially cannon fodder in the war.

You're both tilting things in the favor of your own sides. Calling each other brainwashed or saying they're spouting propaganda is the pot calling the kettle black. World War II was a very complex thing, and throwing around statements like both of you have in this thread is a gross oversimplification of how things went.

Good job guys.  You made me actually have to do moderating work.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: NWR_insanolord on January 29, 2013, 02:10:53 AM
There was really no reason this needed to be locked. In addition to it not breaking any rules, did you not consider that your fellow moderator was in the discussion and moderating it, and should have been given discretion as to what direction to take with it?
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: UncleBob on January 29, 2013, 02:14:44 AM
That's why I didn't delete it.  It WAS breaking the rules, as it was discussing politics (although more historical politics) and had started flaming, both of which are against the rules.

Of course, you can always unlock it - but it really wasn't on-topic for Advance Wars.  The Video Game.
Title: Re: How not to talk about the Advance Wars video games
Post by: NWR_insanolord on January 29, 2013, 02:21:29 AM
I do agree that moving it to the funhouse was probably in the best interest of everyone, but I disagree that it's political discussion.

I'd argue that politics, in the sense of the ban on these forums, refers to current politics, and the relatively recent past. Anything more than 20-30 years old should be considered history, which isn't against the rules, unless the moderators believe it's used for the intent of political argument. And since I'm the sheriff 'round these parts, and my word is law, that's our policy now.

Holy Hell all this out of Snow, Rain and Fog?!?!

WW2 is an immensely complicated matter and there is no one metric that says this country is awesome sauce therefore the best. For every number or piece of technology you count as the end all answer to the question, one can all too easily counter with another attribute. This doesn't even take into account the possible twists and turns that history contains, neverminding the fog of time.

Short version: This is equivalent of "My Father can beat up your Father".

You can't use something that happened in the funhouse as proof of that. This place is inherently about inside jokes and not being serious at all, which makes it totally non-newbie friendly. To change that would be to destroy the essence of it.

That's bullshit. New members don't know the inner workings of the funhouse, especially when the name changes all the time. Hell, the day I first joined, I got a PM from ShyGuy to come join the funhouse. I didn't fully understand what it was until over a month later. Just because you've known what it is for ten years doesn't mean everyone will.

Nulls appear if you edit, but they disappear with a refresh and no other user sees them.

As a general rule on these forums, if someone is making fun of you, it is in good conscience and should be replied back with another joke of good conscience. I find that pictures work just as well too.

(not really about the banning part.  If I was inclined to abuse my power, there are others I'd ban first.  That, and I'd probably screw around with ShyGuy's posts.)
