Criterion's sandbox driving game will hit Wii U sometime next year.

Upcoming open-world racer Need for Speed: Most Wanted has been announced for Wii U by publisher Electronic Arts.

While no information about the Wii U edition's feature set was provided, EA did confirm a 2013 release date, several months after the versions on rival systems.

Most Wanted, the second entry in the series developed by Burnout creator Criterion Games, is pitched as a re-imagining of the game of the same name, which was released on Nintendo GameCube, among other platforms, in 2005. Players can freely explore the large, sprawling city of Fairhaven and compete in races where, instead of following a determined course layout, they make their way to the finish line on a route of their own choosing.

I'm really glad that Criterion is returning to Nintendo platforms, but no way am I going to wait several months just to play this on Wii U when I can get it next week on three other systems I already own.

Heh, why not wait a few more weeks and get the Limited Edition cheaper? I bought Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit - Limited Edition (PC) for ~$33 during Black Friday in 2010. Granted this was Amazon's move, but 2011 saw Battlefield 3 getting discounted heavily on Electronic Arts's Origin store. While I would love to get Criterion's latest game as soon as I can, EA and its games have consistently received discounted prices very close to release date.


Also, the platform I plan to get the game on is the PC so it would be best to see how that version shakes out. Burnout Paradise and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit have competent PC versions (that would fail to see comprehensive DLC support), but it's better to be cautious than have a game that will not function properly.

The word on NeoGaf, from a poster that is known for having inside information do to contacts, is that the Wii U version is actually done already. They're just sitting on it with hopes people will actually double dip on it.

At least they're actually making it for the Wii U themselves this time. It was so stupid to hand NFS: Hot Pursuit for Wii over to another company altogether. So many people must have been incredibly disappointed back then.

My main hope is that all the online features, particularly the Autolog system, makes it into the Wii U version of Most Wanted. EA's approach to FIFA 13 on Wii U doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, but this is Criterion we're talking about - they're usually pretty with it.

For reference, the last game Criterion made for a Nintendo system was Burnout 2: Point of Impact, released for GameCube in 2002. Great game, though later Burnouts have probably surpassed it. It's definitely great news to see this developer back after a generation away from Nintendo.

Made. The Wii U version is done already and was done along side the other versions. So it would be Criterion.
