Title: Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box now available worldwide

Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box is a communication ap for 3DS that lets you send text, picture, video, and audio messages to friends via spot pass and street pass.

I think it's safe to assume this ap will be released worldwide this thursday on eshop.

So starting this weekend (Christmas) we should be able to send each other pictures and stuff. I'm not sure if it's a tiny ap and can be placed in background like web browser , or if it takes up the entire RAM

Really excited to learn more about exactly what Swapnote can and can't do.

The 3DS had a rough start but has been looking really good the past month or two with great games (retail and downloadable), excellent firmware updates, and now some apps providing features that many people want.

Here's hoping it does get a worldwide release this week.

This is pretty fun, and it only takes creating about 4 messages (you don't have to send them) to unlock the photo attachment, 3D pen, and stationary features.

The presentation is the usual cute Nintendo/Mii  theme and the tutorials happen in the form of pretty cute notes from "Nikki".  Sending notes is fun and indeed, I had 5 notes from NWR friends as soon as I downloaded it and my system Spotpassed.

For some reason, Flipnote Hatena was daunting to me, but this has been a lot of fun to casually doodle with.

It's a fun little app, although I wish I could be alerted to messages while playing a game.  But hey, this is better than jack.

It's definitely more of a "mailbox" sort of app than an "IM" sort of app.  Although I've already received two replies to my little Mario vs. Goomba note, and that was sort of exciting.

I think the mailbox conceit is charming, actually.

This is by far my favorite App. I had so much fun sending out drawings and notes. It's great being able to communicate through the system. It's not clogged with tools like Flipnote Hatena so it doesn't give the impression that you have to know how to draw to use it. It's like passing notes in class and a little more fun than a text message.

App is kinda way more awesome than I expected. I kinda can't put it down! I just keep drawing dragons in 3D and it makes me smile. I need more 3DS friends! Good app, if still not quite the Instant messaging we thought it might be/wanted.

I'm kinda impressed by the app.  For some reason when I imagined it in my head I thought of it more as a simple tiny note sending program where knowing Nintendo we were only going to be allowed to send a single message to a single person.

I was kinda taken back when I saw you could send to all your friends or select ones.  Not to mention the kinda reply function for replying to notes.    Overall I am quite impressed with it.

I just spent most of my Play Coins on Stationery. This is a pretty addicting application. I sort of wish we could set a message to sent during Street Pass. Does anyone know what the sealed messages are? Are they from Nintendo or Users?

im confused to what pictures can be sent and what cant. The pictures that Freakforms made to the SD card don't show up, I even made it 3D with graffiti and they are not available.

Any idea if video clips can be sent or that's no way?

I am too terrible of an artists to use this effectively. Anything more than pre-school grade chicken scratch ends in failure.

Not really feeling the app to be honest. Finding it more annoying then anything else. It's so easy for this to become filled with spam messages in order for one to unlock the other features. Getting to the point where I'm just thinking of removing it from my system. The only other option is to make my friend list smaller and don't want it to come to that. I'd honestly prefer a message system with short pre-defined messages (that were tailored based on the games you have had in your system).

You don't want that Neostar. That's whats in Mario Kart 7. It's barely functional as a form of communication that  should have been paired with a real chat system of any kind. Besides, it only takes 4 messages to unlock unless they are always using select all. You are going to have to live to some spam if you want to communicate. Kneecapping the letter box does nothing to deal with the impossible problem of spam.

What a pleasant surprise Swapnote is.

Just fired it up for the first time and sat through a bunch of messages (after creating a few of my own) with a huge grin on my face.

How do I get animated postcards, the ability to add sounds and the ability to respond to specific messages?

Spam, spam, and more spam

If you don't want to spam people, use street pass to pretend to send a couple of messages/stuff and cancel it with the x button.

Post by: TheFleece on December 29, 2011, 10:10:59 PM
The features are unlocked after sending out a few more messages.

I really like the App but I'd like to see some improvements added such as seeing messages by Person, a Favorite section and so on.
I just hit 100 notes and the info about that is after 3000 the oldest note is Deleted and even if you have a note favorited the replies may be deleted.

I have received 2 timed messages :(

I don't even know who they are from or when I can view them :(

edit:
Also, why is there no ability to reply to replies to one of your own messages?
or even to someone else's?

you get to reply once. What if we want to hold a conversation based on that original message?

Swapnote is definitely my flavor of the week right now.

I just need to register more people so that i receive more entertaining messages.

The timed messages are a mystery until the day. I don't mind not knowing who it's from, but it should at least show the date.
I  was just thinking about the replies situation and it's dumb. I really hope Nintendo changes all this sooner than later.

I would love to give SNRPG a shot if someone with a better understanding on DnD sett a little something up.

I am a terrible artist. I am also nowhere as amusing or as crass as blacknmild. But if you want to SwapNote, I am game.

I didn't want to send Mop it up any of the more "crass" (as oohhboy put it) swapnotes, so I just made a Zelda related one and sent it out to everyone.

Let me know what you think :)

edit: It's a 2 parter, so open them in order.
Title: Re: Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box now available worldwide

The crass ones are the best ones. Atleast they aren't dick jokes or pictures I have heard others get.

You can do something I consider impossible for me to do. The Zelda ones are very well drawn. Tell them how bad by pictures are.

you mean like "guess this animal"?

They are pretty bad, but I don't consider mine very good either.
all stick figures up until the most recent one.

I used Google Image search for inspiration on my idea, but it really only helped with the first pic. I had to freehand it from there.

I just know how Mop it up can get about certain topics and I didn't want to turn her away from swapnote even though I think the stuff I send out is pretty damn funny/entertaining.

and even if it wasn't... it was fun to create. I'm having far too much fun with swapnote.
I need to add more FC's so that it stays more active.

Looks like you can receive up to 20 notes at one time. I finally had a chance to download this yesterday, and I kept receiving new notes in bundles of 20 about every 15 minutes or so. At least they don't seem to be lost if you let them pile up, I ended up with over 100.

I'm going to need to practice drawing though, I'm not used to writing on electronic devices.

I didn't want to send Mop it up any of the more "crass" (as oohhboy put it) swapnotes,
Why not? Someone else will, I'm sure, so you probably have the best shot at making it funny.

Not being able to reply to a note thread you started and only allowed one reply to someone else's note thread is a big oversight/design flaw.  I hope a future software update will remedy this.

I think having 100 messages per thread and 100 friends per 3DS is no accident.

But definitely an oversight on both accounts.

I just sent out another 2 parter.

This one is relevant to current events :D

Hope you guys enjoy it.

edit: For those asking about the pic at the end
I had already drawn it out and that was a last minute addition that I jumped to the camera and took really quick.
I turned the 3D off, but apparently that didn't matter. I know what to do differently for next time that situation arises though.

It's twice now that someone has sent me a message (probably a mass message) where it was deleted by the system because "It contained invalid data or was sent from someone that is no longer on my friends list"

Considering the fact that I haven't nor do I know how to remove someone from my friends list. Someone is sending me invalid data.

Has anyone else received that message?

I received that message today also. The swapnote icon had a blue dot on it so I clicked on it and all I got was that message. That was around 2 pm Mountain Time. I didn't have you listed as a friend yet at that time. I thought it might have referred to Deguello because he was online and using swapnote at that time when I checked my friend list.

Do you think we could be  able to send 10 minute vids? I also wonder if there would be a memory issue with storing them on the internal memory instead of the SD card.
I'd also like to sketch in color. Why that was left out initially makes no sense to me.

Apparently there is a special SwapNote Stationary from Nintendo being sent around like a chain letter.

You can't have it unless someone sends it to you.
But as soon as you get it it, you can use it in a message to your friends, who can then do the same.

It was originally sent out in Japan, so can our Japanese Correspondents spread the love?
Title: Re: Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box now available worldwide
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on January 02, 2012, 09:25:31 PM
Even though I know we all love Swapnote,
I thought I should make a list of some improvements that could be made to make it even better.

1: Re-Note / Re-Swap (retweet) - the ability to pass on a message that you received so that you can share it with the other 99 people on your Friends list.
-You can only send a message to the 100 people on your friends list. But you can only reply to the messages that you receive. What if you get a really good message that you want to share with a community much larger than the 100 people that person originally sent it too? I shouldn't have to re-create it, and the originator shouldn't have to shuffle their friends list to make it happen either.

2. Color or Shades of Grey
- It would be nice to add detail to some drawing by using color or a few shades of grey at the very least.

3. More ink per post.
-Not sure I really need 3000 swapnotes, but longer & more detailed ones wouldn't be so bad. So if they sacrificed the ability to store 3000 down to 2000 to allow me double the ink space and an extra page or 2, then I think I would prefer that.

4. Animation Frames
-I'm not talking about full on animated notes, but watching a swapnote is already sort of like watching a story unfold where you can reveal certain things by drawing them last. So it would be nice if you could time your drawing to play out at a certain speed, maybe sync an included sound with that specific portion and allow you to change certain pieces of the drawing while the note plays.

i.e. I draw a happy face man. then I reveal something that surprises him, like a cake being thrown. his facial features change to a surprised look all on the same note page.

5. Multiple pics per note.
As in 1 per page for those of us that can't draw or would rather communicate through pictures.

6. Short video clip in place of a picture(s)
a short 3-5 second video clip could be placed in a note

7. Different Pencil Selections
- Maybe the option to select a thinner pencil and a thicker pencil than the default one provided. This will allow you to maybe add some fine detail lines or thicker outlines to the things you want to add them to.

Anyone else have something to add that they would like to see in a future update or newer version of Swapnote.

Wow those are some good ideas.   Hopefully over time Nintendo will expand it a little like they did with find me mini games.   The renote or retweet and animation would be especially appreciated.

I know today I have to spend a good amount of time in a hospital waiting room.. If all goes well like it should, I might go in and read all my swap notes I've been saving for the past few days to pass the time.    Really a nice little app for things like that.

One addition I would like to see is onion skin for the lower pages when drawing, so that you could trace over parts of previous drawings before making new/different ones. Probably pointless for most people though...

Another one I would add is

The ability to select a different stationery for every page of a note.
-backgrounds can be helpful visual tools depending on the portion of the note.

Replies are displayed in order
-sometimes replies are replies to the reply.... and they may make more sense in order.

The ability to edit a note
- especially if I haven't sent it yet.

Apparently you can do that :D

edit:

Subscriptions
-This way an unlimited amount of people can subscribe to someone who produces lots of Swapnotes
of course this wouldn't be necessary if Nintendo would just up the limit on friends and allow you to put them in groups  for easy identification.

so you might receive it out of order as I went back and edited it in which then changed the creation order.

Damn, I just opened up my 3DS and had 5 new notes.... as I went to pick it up, I bumped it and it slid behind the bed slowly (it was plugged in so the cord made it fall kinda slow) and hit the floor. When I pulled it back up, by the cord, all my notes were question marks and then it said it was corrupted and my SD card had been removed (it hadn't).

But I had to restart the system and all my new messages were gone.... :(

I have got to put this "game" away.

I think I have gotten about 75 notes today, some in batches of 20 with a few stragglers following right behind it. Mix that with updating all the new "friends" with all of my collection of notes, including the ones I made today.... and I think I've been in that app for a good 5 hours straight.

Swapnote is sucking up ALL of my free time.

I think I gonna try and take tomorrow and maybe Sunday off.

Swapnote is 3DS CRACK!

Oh, and I thought of some more improvements for a future update.

Multi Note Select - I want to send someone a bunch of messages and I don't want to do it one at a time.
It now takes me a few minutes to send the whole BNM catalog to a new friend and I should be able to just select everything I want to send and send it all at once. Or a bundle upto 10 or 20 at a time would be more than acceptable.

Note Binding / Note Bundling - There are lots of notes where the contents are spread over 2 or more notes, so it would be nice to bind or bundle those notes together so that if you send one, you send the whole thing... in order and ready to slideshow. This way people see the whole message *in order* before responding.

She is rolling the credits for me right now.

Congratulation! You have solved SwapNote!

---

Technical question: I got the special viral stationery from Daan, but I can't seem to save it. I see the option to use Play Coins but it's grayed out, and my stationery only lets me pick the default 6. Do I have to keep at it?
Title: Re: Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box now available worldwide
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on January 07, 2012, 03:08:03 PM
default 6?

I think I have 43 to choose from including the viral stationery.

Post by: Mop it up on January 07, 2012, 05:04:44 PM
My guess is yes, keep at it. After you create more notes (replies don't seem to count), you'll unlock more stationery than the first six. You probably need to have all the stationery unlocked before you can use the special one, and I think "unlocked" just means available to purchase, I don't think you actually have to buy them all.
Title: Re: Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box now available worldwide
Post by: bhurak on January 07, 2012, 05:09:42 PM
Confirmed.  Send out messages with stationery to earn more.  When you earn it it's all 5 play coins to buy.  The bonus stationery from the Japan giveaway does not have to be purchased, but you do have to reread a note containing it, if you first get the message without having unlocked more than the first six choices.  When you re-read the message it will save off the new stationery and let you know it's available for use.

Dumb question - is the ability to add recordings or save photos something you pay to unlock, like stationary, or do you pay each time you want to use that feature?

Pay once to unlock the feature, then use it as often as you want.  I was worried about this too initially... but it's a good investment to open up these features.

I just thought of something else that needs to be included in an update.

Note Sorting - messages are automatically sorted by date and time, but what if I want to find a message by a certain person and I have over 2000 messages?
or what if I want to trim my friends list down to add new people and want to see who hasn't sent me anything or hasn't been an active swapnoter in a really long time so they can be replaced with someone more active?

Do I have your FC?

I have plenty of room left on my FC list, I'm just being a little selective on filling the space. I'm saving slots for heavy SwapNote contributors and forum regulars.

and it's weird that everytime I check my in/out messages I always have "1 message waiting to be sent". It's been like that for a few weeks now.

Swap Note getting an Update? (or a Wii U version?)

Quote from: Iwata
The only quantitative thing I can tell you is that more than 10 million handwritten notes have been exchanged in the four weeks after the launch of the service, which you can see in the Iwata Asks interview posted on our website (in Japan) just the other day. So I can say that users are using this software actively to some extent. And, I believe that the number of handwritten notes to be exchanged will increase at an accelerated pace if we can have users continue to enjoy the software for a long time. In fact, we have some plans to encourage more people to use it, and you will find out what I am talking about when we reveal such plans in the future. Therefore, we believe this software will gain more popularity going forward.

I look forward to it either way.

Good to see you posted this, I read this as well today, great to hear. More stationary, and maybe the ability to reply to your own topic would be nice. And maybe, I dunno, 5 lines instead of 4? CRAZY Nintendo, just CRAZY.

Title: Re: Swapnote / Nintendo Letter Box now available worldwide
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on January 31, 2012, 12:45:47 AM
I've sorta used it like twitter updates....

until recently that is, I've lost the motivation to actually draw out the ideas of the day...
never enough ink and my stick figure game is quite lacking for some of the ideas I want to put down on Swap Note.

edit: I drew one earlier today but I haven't sent it yet.
The "art" just looks so bad to me. I need to work on it.

You can't draw, or make pictures in 3D, or have dynamic backgrounds to go along with your messages, and you can't type more than 140 characters on Twitter.
The only thing Swapnote is missing is video.
I can't wait to use the Wii U's version of the Swapnote.

This came up earlier, but we tried various kinds of 3D representation and multiple color pens. If you do that, though, the controls get complicated and it turns into software only for those with artistic skills. So I carefully selected what functions to include and placed emphasis on something that anyone could write easily, send right away, and use comfortably. As a result, I feel like it turned out to be something that many people can use.

So Nikki sent an interesting update. She apparently sent a Valentine's Day locked note, and the SpotPass notification reads Nintendo Letter Box instead of SwapNote. Also, she's now in the Mii Plaza.

Also, maybe a SiNG advertisement...?

Edit: WHELP. I just took a quick snap of the youtube page on my 3DS camera and used 3DS Sound to record a short 4.8 second clip of the song... then I attached both to a swapnote message to all my friends... and sent it... like a bomb... this may not have been the best of ideas...

I sent a few of the stationeries I got from fellow NWR members to a friend of mine today.  I think he thought it was pretty cool how they can spread almost virally. I think he friended his sisters boyfriends kid or something.  Said he started using swapnote.    I like the idea of him sending these to this kid, and him just passing it along to his other friends.   Really kinda cool to think about it.
