Nintendo Wii to Add Netflix Service for Streaming Video (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/technology/companies/13netflix.html)
Quote
Nintendo is bringing Netflix’s online streaming video service to its Wii gaming console, the most popular in the industry, the companies plan to announce Wednesday. The service lets subscribers choose from a catalog of generally older movies and television shows and watch them instantly. ... The Wii has had only minimal video material, but it will take a big step forward in this regard with Netflix, when the Wii adds the service this spring. Wii owners with a broadband Internet connection who have at least a $9-a-month subscription to Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service will be able to use the online service at no additional cost.
But Wii owners will need to receive a free software disc in the mail from Netflix and put it into their console when they want to watch a movie, as on the PS3.
I'm waiting on the official confirmation from the Netflix blog, but we are getting it from NYTimes right now and that's official enough for me. I hope they are able to make a Netflix Channel at some point to streamline the streaming process.

Sweet, here's hoping we can load the disc onto our externals and boot from USB Loader GX or better yet, HBC.

I'm sure the video quality will be as good as The Nintendo Channel videos which were much better than I expected.
Video quality on the PC is perfectly fine.
The only improvement Netflix needs is subtitles that you can turn on or off at will during a movie/show/video.

I read somewhere that the only reason the PS3 uses a disc to load is because of some contract Netflix has with MS for the 360.
If that's true, then like the PS3, once that contract is up, we could see a Netflix channel...

Word on the street is that the MS contract is up in the fall/winter(Q4). Originally I had thought that it had meant fall/winter(Q4) of 2009, when the last rumor had popped up right before PS3 got Netflix, but now it seems that whoever knew about the contract was talking about Q42010.

I bet it's like a live Linux DVD with 480p Flash video support. I would say I "hope" instead of "bet"...but I have a 360...and an HTPC...so I could care less, personally. Still, it's good for Wii owners.

Well, if that's what it is then the hacker/homebrew crowd will be really excited to get their hands on a disc so they can start disassembling it and finding ways to get their Linux.

Yup--seems like it's just not possible on a stand-alone player. I need to buy a new PC--my current one was built before Half-Life 2 came out--so I'll probably just get a lap top and hook that directly up to my TV when I want to watch Hulu.

build a computer. it will be much cheaper and you can use your windows license from your current computer. tiger direct has deals on some pretty powerful base models all the time; Quad cores with 4 GB ram, case, PSU and grafix card for $399. saw one the other day for $199

Vudu, my laptop is about 5 years old and I can watch Hulu with no problem (they fixed all the bugs it had early on). As for Netflix, that's another story. Does anyone know if the PC streaming has improved in the last 2 years? The last time I streamed Netflix was in March 2008, and it was terrible. I had pretty fast broadband, but all the buffering still caused a 90 minute movie 3 hours to watch (about 30 minutes buffering to start the movie, another 30 minuted buffering in the middle of the movie, then another 15 minuted about 90% through the movie). I heard it has improved since then.

Netflix is much better now. I watch it without problem on this P.O.S. laptop that I'm using right now. As long as I clear the cache, cookies and the stuff that slow the computer down (damn FF) it runs smooth and quickly.

I don't mean that I can't watch Hulu on my current PC--I can and sometimes do. But I want to be able to watch Hulu on my TV and it's not convenient for me to string a cable across my living room to hook it up to the television.

yet I can use my rented streaming material anywhere I can log in and stream it, but I can use my VC games that I bought across both Wii's that I own(even if they share the same IP address)?
that makes perfect sense..... please explain it again for the rest of the class.

Nintendo doesn't want more than one person to be able to own their download games so they don't want them to be able to be copied to more than one system. I'm sure there would be a way to create some sort of universal account which could allow you to play the games on more than one system but not actually keep them on more than one, but Nintendo isn't a technology corporation so they probably don't know how to create something like that. Or maybe they wouldn't want to do it because of the potential for abuse. Nintendo likes to protect its properties.

*THREAD DERAIL**THREAD DERAIL**THREAD DERAIL**THREAD DERAIL* I'm not gonna make excuses for their oversights.
they should make it so that I have a home Wii and a remote access to my games. While I am using remote access, all I have to do is log in as guest on someone elses Wii and it will let me put the game on the Wii onboard memory. As long as I don't exit the game, then we can play it freely but as soon as I exit the game, I will have to log back into my remote account to play it again. They could even make it so that I have to re-download it to re-play it since it was only stored in the RAM of the system and never actually saved. But your Home Wii must have WiiConnect24 activated for remote play to be available.
And for people that own more than one Wii on the same internet connection, you should be able to connect them like a wireless home network and share your own content between them that way. Download all your stuff to one wii and remote play it from the main home Wii while it is connected to WC24.
This is something Nintendo should have taken care of when the next system arrives.

Oh yeah, I don't like it either, I just can understand why it is set up as it is. That sounds like a good way to run the service, it'd be nice if they overhauled it like that when their next system is released, especially because I'm sure people will want to transfer their games to the new system.

So there is some videos up on the net of Netflix on Wii.
http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=118620
I am a bit interested in this since I like to watch shows online using my Wii. I don't have a Netflix account so I am not really sure on what kind of selection they have. Do they have anime on Netflix?
Do you have to have a subscription to netflix to have access to Netflix on Wii?

Maxi, you need a Netflix account to use streaming, whether it's to your PC or to your Wii. The cheapest plan that gives you unlimited streaming is $8.99/month. That'll get you unlimited DVD rentals (one disc at a time) plus unlimited streaming.
Anime titles available for instant streaming can be found here (http://www.netflix.com/WiGenre?sgid=623). I don't watch anime, but there are quite a few titles on the list that I recognize (Avatar, Ghost in the Shell, Macross Plus, etc.)

Yes, the quality is better on other systems, since (at least on the 360) they are available in up to 1080p. I'm sure even the SD versions look better on 360 than on Wii.

Netflix on 360 uses Silverlight, which can have nice results with very low bitrates. I don't know what Wii uses for Netflix, but I'm assuming it's FlashLite 3.1 like in Opera/Nintendo Channel, which at it's best, looks pretty poor.

I got the PS3 and Wii discs "just in case" since I prefer the convenience of using my 360 since it doesn't require me to swap in a disc.

I honestly have no plans on using the disc at this point since I have a computer hooked up to the same TV the Wii is hooked up too, but it might come in handy if I wanted to multi-task and surf while I watch.

Did we just convince Mop it up to sign up for Netflix? Look in the general deals thread because I'm sure BnM has posted a couple free trials for Netflix. Just sign up for the trial and then sign up for the Wii Disk. It might just work and then you could let the trial run out and not choose to renew it.

Those Free Trial extensions have time limits and I don't have anymore right now. but you will love Netflix and it's only $10 a month. streaming alone makes up for the cost and New Releases on DVD every tuesday make the other $5-7 I pay foe 3 DVD's at a time worth it too.

I've been thinking of upgrading to the 2-disc deal because then I could have one DVD with the next 'date movie' always on hand and still be able to have a movie of my own to watch and swap without holding up the entire queue by waiting for a next opportunity to watch the date movie with the gf before sending it back. Waiting for the next chance to watch a movie together can sometimes take a good few weeks and I'd like more options that what Instant offers sometimes. Got a couple of mail-only titles I really want to watch.
Nice to know that the discs finally went out. I've been checking my mail every day hoping it would show up.

I just popped my Netflix disc in.
First it flickers some wiimote Netflix controls by on the screen, a little too quick for me to see them. I don't think I was pressing any buttons, but I was settling down to get comfortable. Immediately afterwards a new screen pops up that tells you to goto Netflix.com/Wii and enter your activation code that they provide right there on the screen (I imagine you need to be logged in).
I decided to check out Dollhouse season 1 so I added it to my queue while i was still on the computer. It then took about 10 seconds for the activation to activate and the Wii to load up the Instant Watch selection. (note: You can add movies to your queue from the Instant Watch selection right from your Wii)
First thing of notice, I can browse my Instant Watch Queue by the title cover(as opposed to the title list that is provided on the computer) and instantly move through the categories(such as Horror, TV, Action, etc., etc.) by pressing up and down. The covers were a little blurry making the titles hard to read, but luckily the title is also displayed at the bottom of the screen.
As I was browsing through the selection, I accidentally clicked on the wrong title. It started rather quickly and even picked up from where I had left off last time I checked it out... about 10 minutes in.
After exiting, finding Dollhouse in my queue and starting the show, which also started really quickly, I noticed that the quality of video was pretty good. I would say DVD quality without a doubt. This is a relief since the crappy laptop I'm using right now for Netflix streaming varies in video quality depend system resources which affect my connection speed.
Next, the onscreen display is nice. It's minimalist and easy to use. Tells you where you are in the video and how long the video is. Using fastforward/rewind immediately takes you to the Scene View mode so that you know where you are rewinding/fastforwarding to. and the onscreen display only pops up when you move the cursor up onto the screen, and then disappears soon after you move it away.
I might add some comparison pics later, but I would like to wrap this up by saying that video playback is smooth(no screen tearing), loading is almost identical to the PC(video loaded in under 10 seconds) and image quality is about the same as DVD.
I would say that this laptop has now been retired from Netflix on TV playback and will now only be used for Hulu and Xfinity when necessary. That is until I bring my PC over here and hook it up.
Netflix on Wii - 4.5/5 stars
It would be perfect if it didn't require me to put the disc in everytime. A feature that I'm sure is coming in the future.

Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on April 19, 2010, 04:55:17 PM
Just to add to my review above. One thing missing from the Netflix on Wii disc is a screen saver for when the movie ends. I think the screen dims a little, but I fear for a red burn in on the screen like the comcast sign from the cablebox tvguide almost did on my TV.
And for anyone who already uses Netflix, there is now subtitles (http://blog.netflix.com/2010/04/subtitles-now-available-for-some-titles.html) working on some titles and it's in the works for consoles and other netflix devices. To be updated in the fall, I'm guessing that will also be when we get a dedicated channel and don't need the disc anymore.
Title: Re: Netflix comes to Wii.... finally.
Post by: Mop it up on April 19, 2010, 05:57:48 PM
From the looks of it, the system loads from the disc only upon startup, and never at any other point when it is in use. If this is the case, it could, in theory, become a channel at some point. The only question would be how much space it needs, as it has to fit within 40MB.
Title: Re: Netflix comes to Wii.... finally.
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on April 20, 2010, 08:44:56 PM
I'm more concerned with no screen dimmer than I am with a dedicated channel at this point.
I use my Wii a lot more now that Netflix is on it. It guarantees that I turn it on atleast once every other day if not everyday and all day on some days. I often fall asleep to a Netflix movie late at night and now I wake up to the screen still on, but when I use it through the computer, the power saver kicks in and and turns the screen black or the screen saver kicks in.

It dims on my TV. Though it might be only if the movie is paused.

I haven't checked while the movie is paused(I'm checking that right now), but I'm talking about on the main screen. Mine doesn't dim, and it has that bright red Netflix bar at the top and red is a strong color that can burn in easy (it's done it before but it goes away).
edit: It doesn't dim at all on anything.
I just left the movie paused for as long as it took me to edit this post and there was no dimmer.

Still debating on whether or not to sign up for netflix just for this. What's the verdict on quality guys? Waching it on the 360 at my friends house has great quality.

I wish I knew about this before I signed up for my Netflix trial, but if you are a member of Best Buy's Reward Zone Gamer's Club (it's free to join) and sign up for Netflix on through their site, you get 500 points right away and 100 points each month for six months; a total of 1,100 point. You get a $5 gift card at every 250 point spot, so you can end up getting $20 worth of BB gift cards just for being a Netflix member (the normal deal with the Reward Zone is that you get 1 point for every $1 you spend, but they sometime offer 250 or 500 point bonuses for buy select games). Don't forget that you can also register the disc on Club Nintendo, and Netflix is worth it even if you don't stream anything.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=30350.msg601049#msg601049 Not the quality of what I hear the 360 displays (HD) but the quality is very similar to watching a regular DVD on TV and it loads with roughly the same speed as it does on the computer.
The interface is easy to use and easy to learn.
The only downside is no screen dimming/screen saver and you need to put the disc in everytime.
Otherwise, if you like the Netflix streaming selection and you have a Wii hooked up to a TV that doesn't currently stream Netflix movies, then this is definitely worth the purchase. You also get DVD releases in the mail, so it's more than worth the price of admission.

this isn't 100% related to what you were just talking about but...
The Google TV advert(that I saw on BestBuy.com) advertises Netflix, but not specifically for Wii. Comcast OnDemand also referenced Netflix(by image, not name) when pushing same day as New release Ondemand movies.
And you didn't feel obligated to point out that you can get a box that'll do that for a quarter of the price?
If they didn't ask....
But maybe that was the push to finally get the Wii so the grandkids can play when they come over since the Older Couple wasn't actually interested in most of the games.

Yup - they didn't ask. :p
To be honest, they seemed to know exactly what they were getting and sounded like they had researched it - they asked a little about Netflix on the PS3 and 360, seemingly mostly to confirm what they already knew - and we also discussed hooking their PC up to their TV.
I asked them about games and they said they weren't interested, but that the grand kids would bring some over when they came - leading me to believe the Wii would get some use that way.

Just D/L'd it. It's got a nicer looking interface and seems to only take a little bit longer to load than the disc version. I like how you can 'coverflow' up and down through different categories now.

Assuming it was announced the day I got the email I just went on and posted about it. Not seeing anything about it mentioned in the Netflix thread confirmed my assumption that it was a brand new announcement.

It's too bad the disc version no longer works, because I was curious about every little thing that changed. The obvious one is the search feature, and you can cycle through categories by pressing up and down on the D-pad, but there are other changes too, like descriptions appearing when you point at a title, and the background colour is much darker, I wonder if people worried about screen burn-in. There might be other small changes like that...

Title: Re: Netflix comes to Wii.... finally.
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on October 31, 2010, 12:39:25 PM
I tried it yesterday.
I have a computer and my Black Wii in the bedroom and a White Wii in the livingroom. normally you could only have 1 stream running at a time as I tried it many times back at my moms house when we had a computer downstairs and one upstairs. but that was on 2 computers on the same connection.
Yesterday I installed the Netflix app on both the Wiis I have here (40mb download? it took literally 7 seconds after a system update). I fired up Pippi Longstockings on one, loaded up Inspector gadget on the other and started a movie on the computer and they all kept playing and are all hooked up through the same internet connection.
My next test is to see if I can stream here and get my mom streaming from her place at the same time using my account.
If Netflix lets this continue, I'm sure they will at the very least run an IP address check so that multiple streams have to be running through the same internet connect. Otherwise I expect massive increases in bandwidth usage not matched with the same increase in subscriber base.

It should work for another week or two. When I downloaded the PS3 update it said the disc would stop working in 30 days, that was on October 14 (the same day the Wii got the update). I ordered the Wii disc too when Netflix allowed me too, although I won't need it (I haven't even opened it, maybe it will be worth money in the future).

I tried the disc a day after the channel became available and it gave me a message that said (I forget the exact wording) that the disc service was no longer available and to download the new channel from the Wii Shop, then it forced me to return to the Wii Menu.
The disc probably won't ever be worth money because it isn't a rare item, it won't be any more valuable than all of the unopened third-party accessories floating around for old systems.

Whoo-hoo! Just got v1.0.1 from an eBay seller for $4 (one cent plus $3.99 shipping!). Yay! Now to get a red add-a-page DVD thingee..
*edit* for anyone curious, here's my evil plans...
I have spare Red Wii DVD cases from the Hollywood Video stores that closed (scored 3 - whoo!), so my Wii Netflix Disc is already stored in one.
Custom cover printed out from TheCoverProject.net. They have a version for the red cases (with the red spine/system bar) and a version for white cases, for all you out there without extra red cases.
Then, there's an eBay seller who's got virtually everything in regards to CD/DVD storage that I've dealt with and is always a pleasure to deal with (http://cdprofessionals.com/). They hooked me up with a couple of the white DVD add-a-pages. These neat little things clip into the standard Wii cases (in the little slots some people use to hold SD cards) and hold one or two additional discs (the ones I got hold two). I sent them an e-mail to see if they have red ones - here's hoping. You can see what I'm talking about here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O94zCXNv3WM
So, yay!

You know, there are actually some Virtual Console/WiiWare covers over on TheCoverProject where some folks have done this with individual titles. I've always thought if I could get a really good deal on a bunch of super-small SD cards (32MB or 64MB), I'd consider doing it.

Damn, you have been slow lately.
He wants the "set" of Netflix disc implying that there was more than one version. When you first ordered it from Netflix they sent you the original version, somewhere down the line they started sending out a slightly upgraded version. He wanted someone to send him the version he didn't have so that he can complete his collection because he is a rabid Nintendo Fan obsessed with collecting anything and everything Nintendo. I would think you would understand since you collected every single N.A. N64 game that has been released for your own collection.
Ok, moving on now that you are all caught up.
I installed Netflix on my mom's Wii and hooked it up to my account. Called my girl and we both started streaming videos from 2 different Wiis in 2 different locations using 2 different internet connection but on the same Netflix account at the same time.

I understand, I just didn't realize there were more than one disc. Is there any difference between the discs?
Also, I don't have a Netflix account, it's my sister's who still lives at home. They don't have a Wii so I had them order the disc for me to use. I've been using it for months now without any issues, but I have no idea if they use the streaming or not. I'm inclined to think they don't, because there's nothing in the streaming queue besides what I've lined up.

We've known that you can stream to 2 different devices at the same time, but previously you couldn't stream to 2 of the same devices at the same time.
Like when you have 2 Computers hooked up, it would tell you that you already have another stream running. At least it used to, I haven't tried that one in a while though.
