Title: Captain Rainbow?!

Ok, that's a bit...different.  Hope this gets all of the "new IP" people to shut their pie holes for a little while.

Thoughts?

Well it involves a superhero reject trying to help a bunch of obscure Nintendo characters in a world that has some rather beautiful art design (by Skip LTD, most likely)...Why WOULDN'T you want it?

I'm sorry, but I have no interest in this game. My world consists of colors like brown, gray, and muzzle fire.

This will be the majority response from all the "MAKE NEW IP" people.

QFT. If this doesn't release in America, time to mod the Wii and get me an import copy.

I think you should shut your goddamn mouth.  I lament the fact that I'll never get to play this wackiness.

Is it just me, or does this seem very similar to the art style in TIngle's DS RPG adventure? I also think that this game probably won't make it here to the U.S. for probably the same reason Tingle didn't make it here, and that reason would be because homophobia is a major problem here, unlike in Japan or Europe.

It does look like a cool game, and I hope it makes it here, but the bigots might keep that from happening.

I would rather keep the idea that Tingle never made it stateside for the sole reason that Tingle just isn't a very popular character, not because of its homosexual undertones...That gives this game a bit better chance of coming over... =(

I'd say it much more closely resembles Skip's other title GiFTPiA.

There's next to no gameplay in that trailer. I appreciate the obvious humor that will be in the game but I'd like some indication that what I'm playing will actually be fun.

So certain are you?  Nintendo has done nothing but surprise people for the last two years.  Maybe this game will make it to the states.  If not, you can always import it and spend hours rifling through translation guides.  :)

Tingle is popular. You can thank IGN for it not coming to America LOL. The style isn't that similar to Tingle, looks a lot more like Giftpia.

I think it should come over here because of the Nintendo characters in it. At least I hope.

Homosexual undertones? What? Sure, the bridge builder guys are weirdos and Tingle's costume isn't exactly the epitome of manliness (though overall he seems slightly more evil than weird, cackling when he succeeds and all that) but other than that I don't see much about homosexuality. The game has more busty women than muscled men.

I figured a guy named Duke with a white hat and sunglasses like that is a reference to Fear and Loathing.

[Prompted by another thread but I felt that it was more relevant in the games thread.]

I think Captain Rainbow is an odd mix of Viewtiful Joe (Changing TV Personality), Kingdom of Hearts(Nintendo Characters in a Non-Nintendo Wordl), and Animal Crossing(Running around helping people).  I'm truly not sure who this fully appeals to.  Parts of it definitely appeals to me but, other parts counteract that.  Plus I'm not to keen on the chosen art style.  Just not big on the proportions there using more then anything else.  I reserve true judgment till I can get my hands on this game.  It has the potentially to be truly special and the potential to need to be burned and buried with ET.

Everything about this game reminds me of the excellent Chibi Robo.  I fear that NOA will shun it just like they did Tingle's game, especially after seeing references to Birdo's origin and a Japan-only character like Takamaru.

You have that backwards.  Birdo has always been male in Japan, but they usually change that for the U.S. versions.  In the trailers for Captain Rainbow, Birdo has a rather masculine voice, and Little Mac acts surprised and double checks his script after referring to Birdo as a girl, then says that it depends on one's point of view.

See I thought the story went that Birdo in Doki Doki Panic was a girl but when it came stateside NoA didn't think it was right to beat up on a girl so they changed the wording to make Birdo a guy.  Every couple of year I hear a different story on how that is.

Nope, it was mentioned in the original Japanese manual that Birdo was a cross-dresser, and that was obviously changed for the U.S. release...Since then, Birdo was turned back into a girl, but this game is poking fun at her (his) origins...

I had the original manual for the US Super Mario 2 cartridge and it did say that Birdo was guy who thought he was a girl. I was too young at the time to think there was any connotation to that. It was just like Bugs Bunny in a dress.

For the record, I've played and owned Link's Awakening and think its a great handheld title. I just dpn't remember the story and characters that well.

But I shall never forget how you could get away with theft, and the punishment you would receive if you were caught :) .

Speaking of which...remember that frog guy with the sword? The guy whose house would play the secret Nintendo song? I have the strong feeling that he will be a character in Captain Rainbow.

This gets more and more excited every time I see it. The game looks quirky, innovative, and FRESH.

Too bad American homophobia and the obscure Nintendo references will likely keep this away from our shores.

The way I see it, the game has no *** elements (as far as I know, and Birdo is in the game). Its basically a game built around the interaction of classic Nintendo characters. In other words; Chibi Robo with Nintendo characters.

The only thing that inspires homophobia is the name Captain Rainbow. The rainbow has been seen as a symbol for girls and *** people. Remember Rainbow Brite? She was an icon for girls.

We live in an era in which gamers view consoles as extensions of their egos, life styles...and dicks.

A game with a name like Captain Rainbow makes little boys...I mean grown men fear that their status is in shaky ground.

I personally see the character as a farce, kinda like Powered Toast Man. If the Rainbow elements are removed or toned down there wouldn't be a problem.

If this game is released in the US, name intact and all, I have to congratulate Nintendo for being bold.

Think of it as Animal Crossing crossed with an action game...You explore the island in search of characters to help...You then provide your services (such as training Little Mac in boxing, the Famicom Wars Soldats in volleyball, etc)...I believe you have to collect those weird white things that have the yellow ears...Once you collect enough of them (through helping others and finding them around the island), you'll get a star...You have to get the star to a certain place (I guess so it can be granted), but "shadows" come after you, and if you're caught you are sent to a minigame where you face off against them...When you finally get the star to its goal, you can either grant Nick's wish (to become a really popular superhero) or one of the Nintendo characters' wishes...I assume choosing Nick's wish will just end the game, while granting everyone on the island's wishes will get you the true ending of the game... =)

Oh, and Famitsu has reviewed the game:  8/7/8/8 (31/40)

And what the review had to say from someone (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12462406&postcount=518) who has seen it:

The Famitsu cross-review in a nutshell : really great, funny characters and writing. The characters in particular are really expressive, and seem to all be living their own life withing the game (also thanks to the day/night cycle). Pretty enjoyable gameplay, good tempo. Some really indecent (in a good way) humor. Seems like the music is pretty good too. Overall, it would seem like they all really liked it, including the "7" guy.

Thats a good score and overview of the game. I hope it gets a US release.

If this game doesn't see a US release I am going to be furious. I'm hoping Nintendo has something to say about localization soon.

Well I'm not convinced on this game from your description, but I will give it a chance because I also gave a chance to Chibi-Robo with the exact same feeling I have for CR at the moment.

Oh, and Famitsu has reviewed the game:  8/7/8/8 (31/40)

That's a good score.

The only negative part of that was the reaction of the person that posted it, there is no reason to take that as meaning a release is less likely and it may mean that it's slightly more likely.

Not surprising, though disappointing. Like I mentioned already the obscure Nintendo references along with the fruitiness of Japanese humor will keep this one away.

Even if it does get released in the US the game will likely be treated as minimally as possible, like Chibi Robo before it.

What the ****? What a shitty news story. Talk about spin. The fact the game is there is only a good thing. Horrible horrible website.

It's flopping, but that doesn't make it any less awesome!

I'll be honest, I had my doubts about this game, but after watching the first 12 minutes, it does look intriguing....

I really hope Nintendo brings this game out in the US, it may actually catch on if marketed correctly like Animal Crossing.

Not likely to happen given what I've read about the game (for example, see Caliban's link).  ;)

So quick are people to forget about Conker...
Title: Re: Captain Rainbow?!
Post by: vudu on August 30, 2008, 10:26:19 AM
Conker was able to fly under the radar because not even Nintendo cared about the N64 by that point.  If Conker came out a few years earlier (or was delayed to a NGC game, it would have been censored quite a bit.  Also, it was made by Rare, Nintendo's then-darling second party, not Skip, a dev team Nintendo doesn't really care about.

Well they obviously care about Skip enough to let them do whatever the hell they want...

Now tell me, what was the last game of Ninty's that was censored in the localization from Japan to the U.S.?  I can't think of one in the past two generations...Hell, they don't even care about 3rd party censorship for the most part (BMX XXX?)

I don't recall saying the game would be censored during localization.  I said it wouldn't be localized at all.  (And there are plenty of those.)

You certainly implied that the game wouldn't make it over because of the content...If it doesn't make it over it's because NOA are a bunch of lazy goons, nothing otherwise... =(

No audience for Tingle since he's a pretty disliked character in America... :tpg:
