Title: Summer Drought Time! What will keep you busy?
Post by: Bill Aurion on June 11, 2008, 03:54:40 PM
With the classic Summer drought coming into effect (outside random garbage games like MGS4 and Soul Calibur 4 *tee hee*), what will keep you busy as we wait for E3?  Will you be playing those garbage games I mentioned?  Will you just sit around on your computer counting down the time?  Will you...GO OUTSIDE!? =O

As for myself, I have my own backlog I need to catch up on...

(All unopened...I feel sorry for them! :()

I'm also replaying Half-Life 2 (PC version) and Mass Effect at the moment, though I'll be quitting those so I can play my unopened ones...

A backlog 2 years in the making.

Sounds familiar...

Most immediate, I have to finish Drone Tactics for review. After that, Metal Gear Solid 4 has precedence. Once I finish that Okami still needs to be finished as does No More Heroes and Assassin's Creed. From there I will check out the 10 game backlog I already built up for myself with PS3 and PSP games.

Tons of **** I need to catch up on. I'm about 90% through Boom Blox, I'm less than 50% through Fire Emblem, I need to start Okami, I need to start Final Fantasy: My Title's to Long (Thanks Crimm), need to play some Winback PS2, get Wii Fit, get a hold of the old DDRs, and tons o' other k-rap I need to play.

I'm also honing my guitar skills and am learning how to ride motorcyles.  Kinda cool

I have so many backlogged games I most likely won't even get through all of them before the summer ends.

Okami, NMH, and Boom Blox haven't even been touched yet.  I still need to finish Z&W.

On the DS side, I'm currently making my way through The World Ends With You.  And once FF IV hits in July I'm in trouble.

EDIT:  Oh ****!  And I haven't even bought Mario Kart yet.  I need to quit my job.

EDIT #2:  Damnit!  And I haven't even touched WiiWare yet.  I have about 3 games on there I want to play.

I have a lot of Wii and DS games and because of that I have a lot of half-finished Wii and DS games so I'm planning to finish a bunch of stuff, basically every game I have because I haven't beaten anything on the Wii and I've only beaten a handful of games on the DS.

I'm almost thru with FFCC Loli-Shota-WiiWare and Mario Galaxy.

Brawnline and Mario Kart WFC are major interruptions.

Gotta work on Boom Blox, BWii, Aria of Sorrow, Rabbids 2, Tales of Phantasia, Trauma Centers, Rebel Strike.

Personally not sure.  Also Bill Gunstar Hereos and the GBA Version are pretty much the same game.  I was so disappointed by that.  Rune Factory is good but it takes way way to long to get to the courting portion and where you can upgrade tools etc.  Folklore is also good if a little annoying on the "Over World" and there isn't enough quests.

For 30 bucks I have all the Devil May Cry's for PS2 and I'll try to play through them.  Do some WiiFit.  Finally beat Wind Waker. I might go back to Boom Blox but I'm annoyed by the game because the part I won't to play is still locked and I've literally beaten everything unlocked except two items and one is the last Cat one and I totally despice that mission because I feel like I'm fighting the camera more then playing the game.

PS3 Owners 3 words Pixel Junk Monsters... If you haven't yet.

I have no problem with Gunstar Heroes being the same...In fact, I probably prefer it considering the original is perfect... :cool;

I got Folklore because I'm an ARPG-whore, but it being a decent game is good to hear... ='D

There is no summer drought.
Bill is purposedly ignoring Too Human.
There will also be games like: Operation Darkness (360), Tales of Vesperia(360), Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway(360), Infinite Undiscovery(360), Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon(Wii), Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard(DS), Space Invaders Extreme(DS), Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift(DS), etc. I used the IGN release dates.
... Holy crap! Most of those games are RPGs. Mint! More games I buy that I will put on my already big backlog collection.

I'm currently playing through Baroque and Boom Blox for the Wii, and Universe at War for the Xbox.  I plan on picking up one of the newest Mystery Dungeon Pokemon games for the DS, too.

Hopefully, I won't play any video games during the drought. This is a bit weird, but, this summer, I'm trying to abstain from fiction. (I haven't been doing a very good job - I've seen several summer blockbusters, and several plays. And There She Is!! Step 3.)

Title: Re: Summer Drought Time! What will keep you busy?

I'm unsure. I'm hyped up for Blastworks and Bangai-O Spirits but I don't think either of them will come out before the end of the summer so I'm thinking about importing (does Bangai-O come out in the US soon? It's set for August here). Does online work with a freeloadered Wii? Rune Factory might be worth a try if it gets released. Soul Bubbles gets a lot of attention lately, any thoughts on that?

Other upcoming games are Brawl and Ninja Gaiden DS but I don't feel very interested in either. Maybe I could get Boom Blox but I'm theoretically still playing Zack & Wiki (stopped at the stupid ship vs octopus level) so I'm not sure I should get another puzzler. Baroque sounds like garbage and I haven't seen a release date for it either. Etrian Oddyssey came out but I doubt I'd like that. I really have no idea what's upcoming but I have a feeling that nothing will really happen until the end of the summer. Mario Kart is right out due to the whole blue shell issue. DQ Swords sucked, right? I might try MoHH2 if that ever comes out. Was also thinking about getting Geometry Wars for the Wii now that it's down to 20 Euros though I have played the DS version pretty much until I got sick of it...

Another thing I've been considering was getting a Wii points card (if I can find one for a decent price, ideally no more than 1-2 Euros more than MSRP) and using some star points to get 100 points in addition to my current 400 so I can get Lost Winds and FFCCMLAK.

Baroque sounds like garbage and I haven't seen a release date for it either.

Baroque is great, but you should probably stay away from it.  It's not for most people.  Roguelikes are niche enough, but Baroque takes the concept and manages to make it even MORE quirky.

thats more like it.

I have a ton of used GC games i have to finish:

REmake
SF Adventures
Killer 7
MegaMan X: Command Mission (want to kill off some of the bonus bosses, already beat the game)
Donkey Konga 1 & 2 (would like to beat all songs on expert)
F-Zero GX (stupid story mode)

and i have some wii games i need to finish to 100% as well.

Ha ha. Well, I'm planning on moving out of my parent's place at the end of summer, and I figure this abstention will give me extra money and motivation.

Incidentally, I'm surprised no one's mentioned the game that's going to tempt me more than any other this summer: Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People.

You know that IF the game is set in a Universe the Universe itself is Fiction (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Fiction) BUT the game itself would be a work of Non-Fiction within that Universe.  The events that take place would not be imagined or made up within context of that universe unless stated or proved otherwise, like the dream explanation in Mario 2.

Also games like Wii Sport and Wii Fit are not fully fictional either.

WiiWare Games
Virtual Console Game Catchup on beating games.
Boom Blox

School Homework
Moving (Hopefully)

Well I'm done with Rune Factory (it was very awesome) and MGS4 (it was the opposite of awesome), and I'm still somewhere near the beginning of Folklore...

I'll be gone until the 7th, so I SHOULD have plenty of time to clear out my handheld games...Maybe...

I'm thinking about picking up the Metal Gear Solid collection as I've never played one before and trying those out has peaked my interest.  That would be terrible for my back log though.

In the meantime I'll be finishing My Life as a King and Escape from Monkey Island...

I seriously would pick GTA4 over MGS4 for game of the year. But I hope Spore knocks them both out. Besides I have doubts MGS4 will win GOTY anyway consider scores have been mixed for it. So far it only has a 92% overall score.

So far MGS4 has my vote for GOTY. Had Brawl not been slowed down I would've definitely given my vote to that. GTA IV is nowhere near GOTY for me, it would've had to do something new and worthwhile for me to care.

And MGS4 does so much new ::rolls eyes::. The game plays the same way it did back in MGS2 with the same convenient ::escape:: points that the previous games had. The only difference is you have a camo suit and little robot that you can move around. Controls are still sloppy and outdated. Heck even the visuals are marred by some annoying slowdown.

I thought it had some neat narrative innovations though, like the user-activated split-second flashbacks of past memories, and the split-screen with the Rayden fight: a sort of split awareness of location to convey two events at a simultaneous time.
Title: Re: Summer Drought Time! What will keep you busy?
Post by: Nick DiMola on June 26, 2008, 04:44:09 PM
Sure the core gameplay is the same, but the camera work, control and presentation is all vastly improved. At least with MGS the gameplay hasn't been beat to death as it has with GTA. One GTA game was enough to kill that gameplay. Regardless, Saints Row which came out somewhere in the range of a year and half before GTA IV seemed to add more to the GTA formula than GTA IV did. Crackdown also created a much more compelling twist to the genre that far outshines GTA IV.

Mixed with some of the most poorly paced and overly lengthly cut scenes in gaming history. Also as you may notice you are referencing CINEMATICS. Even the cinematics have slowdown in them and that is blatantly unacceptable.

I disagree Xenosaga had horrendous pacing, Xenosaga was the only one that actually put me to sleep. While MGS4 cutscenes are a bit lengthy I always thought they were interesting and very cool.

haven't followed this thread in a while, so i dont know if its derailed yet.

Just posting to update my back-log of games with these:

Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2
XIII

All three were 2.99 and i just had to get them. Played a few missions in XIII before but my friend started begging for it back. Couldn't get passed a certain level in VJ 1. I remember it had me re-doing some boss battles and i'd keep dying at one of the repeats. Never played VJ2 at all, so yeah.. i got some stuff to keep me busy.

Oh and i must beat vudu's Pikmin.

when i opened the case to take the disc out i dropped it and hit my head on the class door that protects my wii, then snapped the dvd case closed on the skin of my fingers.

it really does hurt to play...

none of that actually happened but i wish it did just to prove vudu wrong

I picked up Final Fantasy Tactics A2 the other day out of boredom . . . happy to say it is a very good game and I'm enjoying spending an hour or two a night relaxing and doing some quests.

How are you doing on Pikmin?

i love it! i stopped playing thouth when i stayed up all night one weekend and due to lack of sleep on my part, got the majority of my pikmin raped right before heading to the Ruins area... boy was i in for a treat when i got there... I couldn't put the game down and go to sleep w/o checking it out so i took just Olimar around for a looksy, knowing i wouldnt save this "wasted" day on expedition alone. I saw one ship part i could easily get with the pikmin i did have, or so i thought... i ended up killing the bulk of my yellow pikmin when they drowned after falling off a narrow bridge. I still had a good chunk of reds but the blues were nearly extinct... lol i literally had one and the south section of that level is almost all water...

after that i thought i could use the reds to take out some of the local enemies.. then that flying blowfish came out of no where.. oh god the horror.. between that and those pirahna plant looking things, i had almost no pikmin left. Good thing i didnt save it, but after that fiasco i was afraid to return. I should finish that up so you can get your game back eh?

just picked up The Godfather; blackhand edition (used) and Batallion Wars II (new for $29.99).

XII has been fun so far, but i havent touched VJ1-2 yet. i'm an idiot for buying so many games.

Oh god try to play that Godfather game. It RULES. I think GP can attest to it's awesome.

not sure if you're being sarcastic about GP liking the game, but i like it so far. Lots of little things to do, a good game to pick up and play for a few minutes, but also engrossin enough to draw me in for a few hours if i had the time. So far my only complaint is that the walking controls feel pretty clunky, as do the manual shootings. How do they screw up using the pointer?

I've been meaning to pick up Scarface Wii too since it should be at a decent price drop by now but i can't find it anywhere. Like the Godfather Blackhand Edition i've heard good things about the wii port for Scarface but.. are the controls going to be the same? If so i'm not sure if i'll pick it up just yet, i'll end up waiting till i an get it for even cheaper since its just "more of the same" in terms of gameplay. Then again I can't find the fucking thing anywhere so maybe i should just snatch it up before its harder to find? We'll see, if the price is right when i do find it i'll probably just get it and play it further down the road.

I still have to finish:

Pikmin (duh, i'm sure vudu wants his game back)
XIII
Star Fox Adventures
Viewtiful Joe 1
Resident Evil: REmake
F-Zero GX (damn story mode...)

and start:

Killer7 (day i bought it used i played it, died, never touched it again)
Viewtiful Joe 2

i still also have these few games that are more "just for fun" play thrus:

Donkey Konga 1 & 2 (need to beat those songs on hard!)

Star Fox Assault (beat it before but i rushed thru it so i could give it back to a friend, gotta get those medals!)

and those are only the GC games!

There's still a few Wii games i have that i've either not beaten at all (manhunt 2, trauma center) or not beat to 100% completion (Mario Galaxy, ExciteTruck, and technicaly MP3... but i don't count that cuz i got a fucking 99% score and i checked every fucking map for what item i might of missed before going on to the final boss there... POS)

No I'm not being sarcastic at all. I loved Godfather: Blackhand Edition. I beat that game 100%, took over every property. Did everything possible. Great great game.

I also have Scarface, and while the driving is quite good and there is some good in that game, that game is damn frustrating. I don't like it, I'm disgusted by the number of times I've re-done missions and a few mission specific glitches are a complete turn off.

The controls and gestures are great in both games.

So is at worth at least a pick up at say $20? or is that money better spent on getting my lazy ass to get a wiipoints card and buy my first wiiware game... oh god that reminds me, i have to finish Sin & Punishment and Super Metroid!

Get your Wii Points and save up for Bully, better story, more fun, and some of the best minigames since WiiSports.  Oh and less of the word **** cause God knows I love the word ****, but no man should love the word **** as much as this game loves that FUCKING word.  Scarface is an okay game, but be ready to scream at the screen sometimes. Where as WiiGames are refreshing and relaxing on a regular basis if you get the right one(s).

Pikmin at its best. This afternoon I started watching "Planet Earth" on bluray, and reading your post just made me realize how engrossing Pikmin can be as a nature sim game which is much better than just watching nature documentaries.

Along with Sunshine, I've also recently popped Galaxy back in to get the my last 30 stars with Mario.  Today I'm happy to report I FINALLY defeated the infamous "Luigi's Purple Coins" challenge.  Alllll yaaaaa.
