Title: Star Wars, the Force Unleashed.
Post by: ShyGuy on June 06, 2008, 02:42:57 AM
I could have sworn there was a thread in Consoles about this game, but I didn't find anything in the search.
Anyway, the new screenshots look pretty slick. I thought Krome studios did a good job with Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, so I hope they make the controls solid.
More screens here: http://media.wii.ign.com/media/885/885367/imgs_1.html

That's a Wii screen? Is it from a cutscene? I'm all (looks at others) sorts of like...wow right now.

Yeah, if that's from the Wii version and it's in-game this is one of the best looking Wii games I've seen. This combined with the developer saying the controls make the Wii version the best one has got me excited. See, Ubisoft, effort like that is what we want from you.

It's going to be very good, but that's a recipe for floppage when it comes to Wii games. One thing i'll note about Ty is that the GC versions were always the best.

It makes me sad to see Wii Owners opt for the 360 version, especially with the Wii version in here having extra and unique features, looking as good as it is, and having MARA JADE.
I...you can't call youself a true star wars fan if you don't buy Mara Jade! T_T

Is Mara Jade the person you play as in Mysteries of the Sith?
Yes, though that's probably her least-famous role.
Really? That's the only place I know her from. <3 Jedi Knight and MotS.
She is married to Luke in the expanded Universe, she was famous for being the Emperor's Hand, as told in the great Grand Admiral Thrawn Trilogy (which should have been made into movies instead of the prequels no matter how much I love them)
As for video games, I never seen her in any games I played. But I haven't played that many Star Wars games yet.

It looked pretty terrible at the Media Summit. It would be great if they cleaned it up that much, but I won't believe it until I see it.
This is true. It looked really....not...exciting at the Nintendo Media Summit. I wonder what can account for the disparity between then and now?

#3 is Shaak Ti. #12 is Asajj Ventress. #18 is Aayla Secura. If they're including those, then several Jedi I would also expect to see are missing, including Ki-Adi-Mundi, Kit Fisto, and Plo Koon.

Yeah, and yet there are some of them in the roster already. I don't get how that argument keeps coming up for noncanon video game funstuffs. It's just like saying that Bowser and Samus shouldn't be in Smash Bros. together.
Title: Re: Star Wars, the Force Unleashed.

Smash Bros. is set in an alternate universe. Star Wars Force Unleashed is supposed to take place in the same universe as the other movies. But if other dead Jedi's are already in there, then I don't see why they couldn't include the ones you listed.

But it's a vs. mode. Those characters there aren't in the story.
Heck, the whole Force Unleashed game just goes willy nilly with force powers, WAAAY more powerful than almost any other force application in the movies, or even the expanded audience books.

In the Jedi Academy Trilogy, Dark Force Rising, and even Darksaber you see a lot of stuff closer to what is being done in the trailers of this game. In Champions of the Force the Jedi students, not even full fledged Jedi, were able to push back an entire Imperial attack force that included more than 1 Star Destroyer, with a little concentration.
As for the in game story, dead characters need to be dead end of discussion. But for the vs. mode sure bring back anyone you want. Just also make sure that characters who haven't been born yet or are still little kids are showing up as full grown adults either for the story mode.

Battlefront II features Palpatine as a playable hero for about 6 stages. He has riduclous power. He and Dooku can use force lightning, and it is a savage power to let loose in the presense of dense enemy formations.
You also recover health for killing, so he is a fearsome beast indeed.

I loved the Battlefront games. I almost bought a PSP just to play the newest, until I heard it genuinely wasn't very good. Force Lightning was vicious, as was the lightsaber throw.

So I have the demo for the Xbox 360 version, and if the Wii version is even half the game, content-wise, and nails the controls, then it'll be an absolute must-have. Force Unleashed is the game that Too Human wishes it was. It's beautiful, and you feel like a complete badass when you play it.

This worries me a bit too. I mean, using the force to hold a guy in mid-air and then throwing your lightsaber through him is awesome, but by the 15th time you do it it's probably lost some of it's charm. I'm leaning toward buying the game but I want to see a couple reviews that say it stays interesting the whole way through before I do so.

I played the demo on both PS3 and 360, just cause I can, and amazingly both are identical.
I don't like the dudes with the rapid fire cannons.
The AT-ST was dumb. I can force blast giant doors open, crumpling them before me, yet I can't get this thing to fall over no matter how many times I blast it.
Another game with QTE. Yay. At least its not as bad as God of War.
The demo was fun, just frustrating at times. The one thing that could change and would make the game *almost* perfect: have the focus based on where the camera is facing, not where the character is facing. So many freakin times I shot lightening at a barrel when not one second before I had a soldier in my sites.
Title: Re: Star Wars, the Force Unleashed.
Post by: BranDonk Kong on August 23, 2008, 03:49:28 PM
I think you can change the camera to do that, maybe not. Anyway, your powers in the demo aren't what they would be in the actual game, if I read the pre-release info correctly. It's basically like playing Half-Life 2 with the Gravity Gun on steroids, only you're a badass Jedi Knight (or Sith I guess), instead of a factory worker.

I played the demo and really REALLY enjoyed the game, and the teaser at the end got me even more excited. With that said I do agree with some of the complaints, such as the game seemingly being extremely linear. Also the AT-ST thing was weird, but I guess they had to make it that way even if it made no sense.
Regardless I think this game does one of the better representations of being a Jedi with powers, and it appears there is a huge variety of things you can do so nothing gets repetitive (Heck I haven't even thrown the lightsaber through a guy yet!).
Though I do have to wonder why you can't be a female dark jedi considering that female jedis are beginning to be introduced into the series.

You took a type of warrior with a powerful spiritual presence, in tune with an all inclusive aura which fuels life itself known as the "force", and instead suggested that the ability to channel this power is not due to training or the potential inherent in his/her spirit but because he/she has a certain type of bacteria in their blood.
I mean, huh?
As for the game, I intend to rent it to give it a play through, at least. I played the 360 demo and I can see how it might get repetitive, however.

I took the midichlorians as being an indicator of force sensitivity, something caused by being strong with the force, not the reason for it. Like a disease where the easiest way to detect it is by a symptom or side effect.

Throwing lightsabers through people while you hold them up in the air never gets old in Jedi Outcast, so I imagine I won't have a problem with it. In fact, here is an incomplete list of things that can never get old in a Star Wars game:
pushing people off cliffs.
pulling people off cliffs.
lifting people really high and then dropping them.
smashing people into walls.
smashing people into ceilings.
smashing people into floors.
smashing people into other people.
smashing people with any of the above.
dropping other heavy things on people.
pushing people into traps.
pushing people into the paths of monsters.
cutting off limbs.
cutting off heads.
cutting off heads when they drop to their knees in front of you after you've cut off a limb.
cutting off heads while you flip through the air.
choking people.
throwing a lightsaber into people while choking them.
knocking people to the ground and then doing any of the above before they can get up.
convincing people you're friendly, then doing any of the above to them from behind.

The key is to use the Force instead of just force. Doing these things as a thug isn't all that special. Doing these things from a distance as a Jedi is awesome. A Jedi can get someone to walk into a Sarlacc pit by telling him it's full of cookies. I respect that.

I didn't find the demo too terribly impressive because I had a hard time with the controls and aiming my throws. I was also a bit offset by by the semi-choppy frame rate too. If the Wii version fixes these aspects I might consider picking it up. School starts in a couple days though so I should restrain myself from buying more games...

So I played the demos for the PS3 and it's BAD ASS. The graphics are slick and the control is tactile. The ability to wipe out massive amounts of soldiers with just a charged up FORCE PUSH is exhilarating. Not to mention lifting a trooper 20 stories off the ground and watch him fall to his death. It's a must buy.
Still, not every thing is perfect. Someone mentioned early that you can't move and block at the same time and they're right. It's straight up BULLSHIT. It auto blocks (kinda) against weak fire when your running, but it's nothing compared to the block button (especially facing AT-ST's and the like). One other gripe is the lack of accuracy when wanting to pick up items. The way the locking system works is dumb. It shows you what you are facing (and thus, what you can pick up) by highlighting the object with a blue outline; you can't highlight a person right behind an object and you can't highlight something you are not facing. Luckily, it gives priority to your enemies rather than boxes, but it's still a pain in the ass. The Wii could easily simplify this by allowing you to point to what you want to apply force to. Also, the Wii could simplify the saber throw. The only way you can do it now is by force gripping someone first. There were plenty of times I wanted to charge into battle by first throwing my saber like a boomerang then running up and using a mixture of lighting and push.
The game is still purchase worthy though.

Okay, I actually played the Wii version for about an hour. I've also played and beaten the 360 demo. LET ME SAY, this game is REALLY FUN. The first hour was great.
I suggest ALL to check THE WII VERSION. Excellent controls, was so much fun. It's clear that some real PASSION went into the Wii version. Check it out!
Now the characters so far are kinda bland, and also the use the nunchuck accelerator for something they should have. HOWEVER, force push with the Nunchuck, rules nuts.
YOU PISS POWER for the first hour and you just feel.
Please you guys, check it out, the wii controls are AWESOME. Way better than using the 360 control pad. If it were back to that I'd say it's a typical action adventure.

I have to disagree to an extent. The controls are fun, but the actions are very delayed. Some passion may have gone into the controls, but this is obviously a PS2 port. This game should have been delayed in order to use Wii Motion Plus, and it should have been developed by someone who isn't too lazy to just port the game from the PS2. It had a ton of potential, but after playing both versions, and I absolutely HATE to say it, the 360 version is better, if you ask me.

Okay so I was pretty much ready before I played the game to sit down and say the 360 version was better. Then I played it and thought it owned the 360 version. That sucks that you feel otherwise :/

Played through the first half of the game with my cousin tonight. I found the controls to be very good, not delayed at all. The biggest annoyance has been the camera, which likes to get wonky in corners and closeups. The graphics do seem like a PS2 port though. They're not really bad, in fact some of the later levels are very pretty, but you can tell not much effort was put into better textures or lighting for the wii version. As DAaaMan said, the game is very fun and I loved the first level with Vader. I liked the fact that he didn't have a run. Vader walks into battle like a stone cold killer, blocking blaster fire with his hand. Lots of cool moments, especially killing the bosses.

Play the first level of the 360 version now, it's almost like it's not even the same game. There are walls to destroy, trees, 10 times as many wookies, it's daytime, etc.

Okay, I gave up on this game. Everyone, RENT IT. Do not buy it. I pretty much after the first few levels said f-this. It got difficult enough that restarting just didn't sounds like fun. Since basically you do the same **** over and over again, just with different looking enemies and bosses with different moves.
The boss battles are boring too.
But the controls are awesome, as well as the first level or two.

Don't listen to Mandark, the game is good stuff, and the story gets more interesting half way through. The combat is satisfying enough that repetition isn't an issue. Collectibles are fun and the duel mode is decent.
I would give it a solid 7 so far.

Don't listen to Mandark, the game is good stuff, and the story gets more bad fanfiction-like in appearance half way through.
Fixed.

It's impossible for me to play any Star Wars game without stopping to consider that the events I'm playing through occur in the same reality in which Stinky the Hutt gets kidnapped.

Ok, reviving this thread to say I'm very dissapointed with the game. Knowing what Factor 5 was able to pull off on the Gamecube twice, it would seem like there is some sort of bar for Star Wars games on Nintendo systems.
My God, the construction of the ships are pitiful. Are those thrusters or blue pineapples cut in half? I really wanted to puke.
Darth Vader sucks. Is he so heavy that he can't run?
I'm playing through versions on both the 360 and the Wii. Yeah, its worlds apart and not fair to compare the two, but can't the Wii version be compared to Metroid Prime 3 or Rogue Squadron on GC? Yes, I believe it can.
I'm going to keep going on the Wii just to see if it gets better past the second level or so.

The game gets worse.
The controls are awesome, the game is not.

Not to mention half of his skin and other organs are gone. Must make it hard to be physically active.

He's got ROBOT LIMBS for a reason, you know. He can jump over twenty feet vertically with no assistance from the Force. I think he can handle a little jog.

When did he jump 20 ft?

For any MST3K fans I submit that "Darth's not getting paid enough to run."
FWIF I enjoyed the Wii version of the game more than the PS3 version. Something visceral about throwing people around with the nunchuck. But those boss fights really pissed me off. Strangely it's pretty much the same problem I had with the new Prince of Persia - repetitive but mostly fun bits staggering from one boss fight to another.

It would be undignified for Darth Vader to run. He's powerful enough to not need to chase his prey.
The best part of the game was throwing thing around with the force. It works very well.

Secret Bumprentice!
Since I currently have a 360 in my possesion, I downloaded the 360 demo to compare it to the Wii version.
- The graphics are obviously much better. Not only more polygons, shaders, etc. but The enviroments seem to have been illustrated by a more talented team. The wall panels you force remove and throw aren't just flat, they are like round engines embedded in the wall. I don't know if the PS2 version held the Wii version back, but it seems like corners were cut that didn't need to be cut.
- The controls are better on the Wii version. The biggest thing you do in the game is the force grab of enemies and items to throw around. This is much smoother and natural in the Wii verison. The quick time events aren't as hard either.
- Other than that the games are pretty close to the same (at least the demo level) A player would be satisfied with their system of preference.
