I hope the Mac version of spore doesn't use this crap.
Since it's being done with Cider it most likely will.

So if the publisher goes kaputz or they just decide to stop supporting the game your copy no longer works.
F*ck that. I will never buy any game that uses this (my PC isn't very up-to-date so I guess I wouldn't anyway but ignore that). I can't stand this bullsh!t idea that we just pay for a licence to use intellectual property. No, I buy a copy and I own it and can use that copy forever unless I somehow break it. I have no right to make a copy and distribute it to millions of strangers. I have no right to claim I'm the author of the content. I have no right to make copies and sell it or use any part of it in my own commercial IP without paying for it. But I have every right to buy a product, do what I want with it regarding personal use, and expect it to work for as long as I want provided I take good care of it and it doesn't die on me due to wear and tear.
Can you imagine is they tried this kind of sh!t with other products? Imagine a car where the manufacturer went under or was bought out by a company that no longer wanted to support certain models and suddenly every Ford vehicle made before 1990 no longer works and it's against the law for any mechanic to fix it. That's realy what this stuff is. It isn't about piracy. It probably was at first but they soon realized what they really wanted was the ability to have complete control over a product even after it was sold. They want the ability to break the product when they wish and force you to buy a new one. With digital content this isn't hard to do. The only reason cars and washing machines and toasters don't have it is because it's too hard to do.

Well it's official, I am now illegally downloading Spore.

I am no longer in danger of having my life taken away from me by Spore. EA's plans for world domination are foiled.

How exactly do you plan to do this, how would you get past this system if you had a pirated copy?
If this were any other game but Spore I'd just forget about it because of this, but I don't think there's a way they can make me not buy Spore no matter how stupid the anti-piracy measures.

I don't buy it. I don't know a hell of a lot about SecuROM, but there is no way they are going to keep users of dial up connections from playing these games.... Sounds like a shock and awe article to me.

Honestly I have no clue. I hate dealing with torrents and the like so I was more joking than anything. I'll probably just not buy it.

Well I just read up on it and it does seem totally legit. Sounds pretty lame but not the end of the world. I'm still hoping that the supposed Wii version of Spore is the actual game, and not a spin off.

Just give the hackers a couple of weeks and this will not be a problem. Piracy will never go away, stop wasting money trying to fight it and put your money into making games and marketing to the people who will pay for them and don't worry about those who won't.

I'm still buying both, so there!
P.S. This thing still sucks.

I'd buy Mass Effect too if they port it to the Mac, which actually is pretty likely considering that EA is doing that a lot lately.

I hear Macs make better PCs than PCs do.

I still don't see why I should trust a Bioware producer when he says something about Spore.

Pirates will easily find a way around this...All crap like this does is turn off people who would legally buy the damn game...

We'll re-authenticate when a player uses online features, downloads new content or a patch for their game.
PROTIP: Spore downloads new content THE ENTIRE TIME YOU'RE PLAYING THE GAME.
I'm pretty sure you can turn that off, or at least limit it. The biggest complaint I could think of about the old system was that it could prevent you from playing when you had no internet connection and that is no longer the case.

That is why I don't play WOW even though I'd like to, I don't have steady finances so my internet is off and on all the time. I would hate to HAVE to have internet to play a game.
