Title: Smash Bros. Tournament
Post by: Svevan on March 07, 2008, 02:07:58 PM
Hello Brain Trust. NWR wants to do a Smash Brawl Tournament. We need a good system for accomplishing this, and have turned some ideas back and forth. However any suggestions you have here would be great (Funhouse core group ftw).

Our current plan is to create a new friend code thread that will house tournament friend codes. We'll limit the list to a certain amount of people (whatever the max friend codes you can have in the game) and have everyone add 'em. Then we on the staff will randomly organize matches, and the winners will be assigned to other winners during the tournament until there is an ultimate victor.

When you guys get Smash and start using the friend code and online play system, note the limitations that we need to look out for. Any suggestions for how to make Nintendo's stupid online rules work for us are welcomed. We need some groupthink in this hizzy.

Thanks.

Match-ups that involve only Space Animals are automatically disqualified.

My friend code is 0387-8466-6535.

I just did a quick Google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=free+tournament+software&btnG=Search) and there seems to be a bunch of tournament software available for download (some free, others for ~$100).  The easiest thing to do would probably be to create the tournament using one of those.

That's Pale's weak thread.  This is a better thread.  Where the buffalo roam free.

I dunno, maybe it is just me, but I think it would be neat if we had two different kinds of tournaments, one where items are turned off and one with random stages along with items. That way both sides of the spectrum can be satisfied. Probably is too much work though.

I would like this too, simply because I enjoy no item battles on FD (I know, I know, tourneyf*g style), however I think it's more important to satisfy the masses with standard, stock item battles. With that in mind, I think some stages might need to be cut out of the random line up because they don't really foster a fair fight (Big Blue, for instance).

Don't listen to GP's weakness.  If you want a no items/Final Destination tourney, I know a good place to find one (http://www.smashboards.com).

However, she does bring up a good point.  I think each branch of the tournament should be best-of-three to limit the bitching about getting lucky due to a certain stage or whatever.  I'm all for random stages and characters, but I highly doubt most people will go for that.  Also, my vote's for stock matches, but I'm sure I'm in the minority here.

We should also try team-tournaments sometime down the road, although maybe not for the first one.  Four-player free-for-alls would be great, too, but I'm sure there will be much bitching about those.

Lol, I actually prefer items and random stages. Team battle tournament could be quite cool IMO, something unique along with 4 player tournaments. Random characters could be interesting as well in that it would keep people on their toes and force them to practice with everyone.

Please make them stock matches.  Please.

Three tournaments: 1v1 items, whatever settings the players choose are randomly assigned, 1v1 more traditional battle rules, and 2v2, with some kind of rules of some sort.

The game can hold 64 friend codes, so a 64 man system would probably be best.

Let players choose their partners, of course, but randomly assign the next one.  Give players a 24 hour window for their matches, so basically one a day.  You can make the bracket and have one whole tier of matches going all at the same time, but it may be a good idea to avoid having the tournaments all at the same time.  Start with the generic, any level, any item one, and only allow starting characters, if you ask me, and have it some time soon, IMO.

The next one should be 2v2, and the last should be the traditional-style one.

3min timed battles should be included.  That way the entire match can be saved in replays.

I don't know if it'll matter.

I can't get a decent ping to Pap and he's only in Puerto Rico. I can't imagine what half a globe away would do to trying to play online SSBB...

Define "decent ping"

The game can hold 64 friend codes, so a 64 man system would probably be best.

Some of us have friends outside of NWR that might not want to participate in the tourny.  Maybe limit it to 32 or 48 people so we don't have to delete people in order to fit everyone in.

Define "decent ping"

A ping where there wouldn't be a 2-3 second delay between your button press and the action on screen.

Playing Strikers against Pap was still badly lagged and Strikers can use some pretty decent server side prediction. SSBB doesn't have that kind of luxury.

It sucks because I'd love to play against you, Mario and the other Aussies and Europeans (namely KDR), but the lag will likely render the game unplayable.

It'd be great to be wrong, though...

Is the friend code system set-up the same as Mario Strikers where each Mii gets their own friend code?? Because then we can just create a tournament Mii to use for the tournaments here.

The other problem with a 64 person bracket is that I don't think we have anywhere close to enough regulars here to fill one that big.

An issue I had was when other devices were connected to my internet. Regardless of the bandwidth they used, things slowed down far too much. When I disconnected them, I had no problem with them, unless they had devices on on their end.

I don't think we'll all have to worry about adding everyone in the tournament to our friends list.

In my expereince so far with the game, friends are linked up fairly quickly.  I believe we'll be able to go into a chat room and have people add each other based on the brackets they are in.

I haven't been playing online as I'm doing the rest of the stuff in the game.  Is yours a japanese copy?

Also, we have a sweet prize lined up for the first Smash tourney!

I've got both, so I can play you with it if you want, or the other one, perhaps.

Send me a PM of a time, so I can make sure I kill you dead.

Near 2 feet of snow closed EB for the tournament (and mid release), and as a result, I wasn't able to participate and claim my $5000... so you're all lucky.

For the record, every single one of you has ruined Brawl's online.  It lags far worse than it ever did before now, and I even played someone in Florida for once!

Doesn't this happen with every online Wii game, it's pretty bad for the first few days and then it gets better?

It happens with every online game, not just the Wii ones.

It seems my Melee skills are mostly useless in Brawl, but I'd still like to play you guys in a tournament.  I'd like to see both 1on1 and 2on2 tournaments.

My current thoughts for the inaugural tournament (with a prize) is to do an initial round of 4 player timed matches.  Each set of four people would play three matches, you'll receive 4 points for first, 3 for second, etc.  At the end of the three matches, the two players with the lowest "point" totals would be eliminiated.

I think this would work well because it would allow for someone to have one unlucky game, and rather than doing them based on total score in smash, it will keep say one person from getting two final smashes in one round and ballooning their score way up to the point that the rest of the rounds don't matter.

After that initial halving of the bracket, I think we'll just do best of 3, 1 on 1, 4 stock matches all the way to the championship.

Also, I feel that at least for the initial tournament, all items and stages should be turned on.  There is the least amount of room for people to complain then.

Also, I think that NWR staffers will participate, but the highest ranked NON-staffer will win the prize.

You know.  When I was in Carmi, Il.  Final Smashes and Dragoons parts were somewhat common and a factor.  Go home and played enough matches to unlock 2 more characters plus went through classic with Link and Luigi.  They both became non-factors the in most matches.  The majority didn't seem to have smash-balls pop up and rarely was anyone able to get the whole Dragoon...

I thought that was weird.  But I was playing shorter matches... (I wante to unlock stages.)
