Title: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread
Post by: UltimatePartyBear on February 14, 2008, 02:13:20 AM
Is it possible to get an actual spoiler tag, or at least make black the default "glow" color?

As vudu pointed out and I have just tested, choosing to login "forever" doesn't work.

Title: The "simple machines forum" logo...
Post by: decoyman on February 14, 2008, 03:34:06 AM
The simple machines forum logo is not NEARLY good enough for them to be plastering it all over the place like that.

If you guys can get rid of that ugly thing and all its instances, we will all be grateful, I'm sure.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Increase post character limit from 20,000 to unlimited (or 200,000 atleast)
bring back Marquee and flash, if only just in the funhouse

Bring back the quick-reply, if possible.

Add in the author of the news post in Talkback.

More PMs.

These are just requests, I'm just glad the forums are back.

I was wondering if we could see who was currently online like we could before, too.

The forums are now disgustingly fast. This is unacceptable. I demand Plaid speeds.

Not sure whether the insert flash button actually works, but I don't want to find out. Trash it if you will please. Also is there a convenient spoiler button? Also about the spoiler, can you make them reveal when moused over instead of highlight?

Just a few things that stand out so far, none of which are what I'd call critical issues:

The icons are average at best - particularly the Home thru Logout ones at the top of the page.
The icons next to each thread aren't easy to distinguish (maybe its just foreign right now).
No option to change post size - I miss 50 per page.

That aside:
"Web 2.0" Blue has been done to death. Is there a better theme around?
20,000 characters is a lot. If you need any more, you should rethink what you're posting (yes bill, this includes you).
Don't move the old posts over - think of this as a clean start with postcounts for those who like to measure their e-ego in that fashion.

I am thinking this too, bringing over the old stuff would just clutter the place with a lot of stuff that was better off being left behind the first place.  Anything of importance can just be started up again.

1. Why is it that when I click on "next" or "previous", located on the bottom-right side of any page, it sends me to the next or previous thread instead of the next or previous page of the same thread?
I know I could just click on the page numbers on the bottom-left side, but I'm lazy.

2. When there are new posts in a thread I notice that the thread listing shows which thread has a new post or not, but why aren't the posts themselves flagged as "new" too. Now everytime I go into a thread that is flagged with new posts I don't know where to continue reading from because new posts aren't flagged as "new". Is there some way that we can have thsi feature just like in the old forums, or am I just not looking in the right place?

Can we disable the "name" feature? A little part of me died when Bill changed his name to Akai on here... and looking at the options, it appears anyone can change their name at will, which could likely lead to a lot of confusion.

The whole thing is CSS driven, I've been looking into theming.  It should be doable to get the forum to mimick the look and feel of the main site.

No!  Make the main site match the look and feel of the forums!  This is way easier on the ol' eye balls.

Is there anyway to turn off post views on the main pages?  I really don't care how many people have read a topic; I only care about how many people have replied.

Also, I am loving the Mark As Read feature of this board.  LOVING IT.

Is it just me, or it impossible to tell which posts are new when you are viewing a thread?  There's no new! icon anywhere.

That doesn't answer my question at all.  I don't have a problem seeing which threads have new posts in them.  My complaint is once you're in a thread, there's no easy way to determine where the new posts start.

1) You can tell if a thread is unread, but how can you tell which specific posts are? In Fusetalk, there was a blue (NEW!) indicator which was very useful.

2) Can you PLEASE take this opportunity to include which system the game is on in your Impressions/Previews/Reviews Talkback threads?

Thank you.

Is it possible to get an actual spoiler tag, or at least make black the default "glow" color?
As vudu pointed out and I have just tested, choosing to login "forever" doesn't work.

The spoiler tag, as promised in the original thread, was practically the first thing I fixed.  The login thing should work consistently now.

The simple machines forum logo is not NEARLY good enough for them to be plastering it all over the place like that.
If you guys can get rid of that ugly thing and all its instances, we will all be grateful, I'm sure.

I'll replace those logos with giant banner ads post-haste.

Increase post character limit from 20,000 to unlimited (or 200,000 atleast)
bring back Marquee and flash, if only just in the funhouse
And the emotions below

I removed the limit as soon as it became a problem, but I guess nobody tested it out afterwards.
I can't do that on a per-forum basis, unfortunately.  I can change the theme though, like the old board.
All of the old emotions are back.

Any ETA on old topics coming back?
so... when is talkback going to start working again?

ETA: yesterday!

Sometimes, when I click on a forum link, I get taken to the appropriate page, and sometimes I get a bunch of code. Here's a snippet:
When viewing a topic in the announcements category, there are four navigation links at the top of the page: Nintendo World Report Forums, Announcements, Announcements, Topic: (topic title). One "announcements" takes you to the NWR forum main page, and one takes you to the announcements forum.
Not a new issue, but it really annoys me that links open in a new window.

The code thing was just a temporary server problem.
The first Announcements link was just for the category.  The second link is the actual board.
Eh. I'd rather have links open in a new window.  Or rather a new tab in modern browsers.

Bring back the quick-reply, if possible.
Add in the author of the news post in Talkback.
More PMs.

The quick-reply is enabled, but wasn't the default when I installed the board.  It's the default now, but if you don't see it, change your settings.
Newsbot is dead!
There is currently no PM limit.

But I am totally for putting back marquee and flash.  As well as bringing back quick reply.

Marquee is just too annoying.  If there was some way to disable sound in posted Flash, I'd enable it.

It's probably there but I can't find it, I would like a way to have more posts per page.
Is there a way to set the posts-per-page to your own specified number?

Unfortunately, no.  This is a top requested SMF feature though, so I'm hoping it will be in SMF 2.0, which will be out later this year.  If you know of a mod that will allow this, let me know and I'll install it.

Really the only problem I have with the new joint is the SMF logos everywhere.  I love the colors and layout already.  Hell, I wish the frontpage matched the forums.

The icons are average at best - particularly the Home thru Logout ones at the top of the page.

No option to change post size - I miss 50 per page.
That aside:
"Web 2.0" Blue has been done to death. Is there a better theme around?

Eventually, we'll have our own NWR theme.  However, if you find some good themes on the SMF site, let me know, and I'll consider installing them for everybody to use.

1. Why is it that when I click on "next" or "previous", located on the bottom-right side of any page, it sends me to the next or previous thread instead of the next or previous page of the same thread?
I know I could just click on the page numbers on the bottom-left side, but I'm lazy.

If this is too confusing, I could just remove that feature.

P.S. Can the mods make a moving text, flash, increased character size, and color able to be disabled through each members profile so the user who hate this text can disable it while other can still enjoy like avatar/sig/images/censures all are able to? PLZ??

This isn't an option in SMF, though it could be handled by a custom theme.

Can we disable the "name" feature? A little part of me died when Bill changed his name to Akai on here... and looking at the options, it appears anyone can change their name at will, which could likely lead to a lot of confusion.

This will probably be a good idea.

Is there any way to remove some of the "stuff" and/or dead space from the left hand side?  Posts that are only one or two sentences are still like 3.5" tall.  This one included.

That stuff can be changed by themes.  If you find/make a good one, let me know.  I also tried to remove some of the dead space that was reserved for post count ratings.

Is there anyway to turn off post views on the main pages?  I really don't care how many people have read a topic; I only care about how many people have replied.

No, but does a column of numbers really bother you that much?

There's a "new" icon by the page number links.  If you click on it, it takes you to the first new post.
Holy Hell, you're right!  That's great.  Still, I'd like a new! icon to appear by the post title if possible.

When you do what PartyBear said, it brings you to the new posts.  I don't really see a point in the NEW! indicator because of that.  However, the nice thing about SMF is that it is very moddable.  Check the SMF site.  If you find any mods that you'd like included on these forums, such as a NEW! indicator, let me know and I'll consider installing them.
My focus is now to rework some of the main site, so I'll keep the Talkback formatting in mind.  We also have some other plans for Talkback.

I don't like the way posting hyperlinks is treated.  I liked there old way where it asked me for the URL and then for the text I wanted to use.  Now it just plops in the url code, and if I don't know the proper code (which I don't) I can't make any text appear besides the URL.

Also, how the heck does Stevey do this (better/funnier)?
Title are better given to, but it would be nice to have the personal text visible under the avatar in posts and not just in profiles....

Last complaint (for now):  do we really need two ways to edit our posts?  Sure, it's nice (I guess) to be able to edit the post in the same window, but it seems unnecessary to have two modify buttons.

Don't think that we're not grateful for what you've done here; we are.  (Especially me.)  These are all just minor nit-picks to a fantastic job.

Vudu: The two edit buttons behave differently. The top one takes you to the full edit page with all the formatting options. The bottom one is for "inline" editing and doesn't have the formatting options available. Think of it as a "Quick Edit" for those last-minute changes.

No, It's fine. It's no big deal. It was just a matter of me reseting myself to these new forums.

Yeah, sorry about that.  I read your initial post, but somehow missed the line about the spoiler tag.  Thanks for all the work you're doing.

Regarding labeling new posts, I think it's only confusing when it takes you to the bottom of a page and the first post you see is actually an old one because there just isn't room to scroll down any more.

The NWR Forums banner is supposed to link you to the main page.  Right now it directs you towards the main forum page, which is kind of pointless because there's a home button right below it that does the same thing.

It always annoyed me that a graphic that said Nintendo World Report Forums linked to the main page.

[snip]

Not a new issue, but it really annoys me that links open in a new window.
[snip]

Eh. I'd rather have links open in a new window.  Or rather a new tab in modern browsers.

I had trouble putting my objections into words, so I'll just quote this site (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/9605.htm):

Quote
Opening up new browser windows is like a vacuum cleaner sales person who starts a visit by emptying an ash tray on the customer's carpet. Don't pollute my screen with any more windows, thanks (particularly since current operating systems have miserable window management).

Designers open new browser windows on the theory that it keeps users on their site. But even disregarding the user-hostile message implied in taking over the user's machine, the strategy is self-defeating since it disables the Back button which is the normal way users return to previous sites. Users often don't notice that a new window has opened, especially if they are using a small monitor where the windows are maximized to fill up the screen. So a user who tries to return to the origin will be confused by a grayed out Back button.

Links that don't behave as expected undermine users' understanding of their own system. A link should be a simple hypertext reference that replaces the current page with new content. Users hate unwarranted pop-up windows. When they want the destination to appear in a new page, they can use their browser's "open in new window" command -- assuming, of course, that the link is not a piece of code that interferes with the browser’s standard behavior.

You could add a link to the main page somewhere else. I'd add one to the breadcrumbs. So you'd see this at the top of this page:

Nintendo World Report > Nintendo World Report Forums > Nintendo World Report > NWR Discussion > Topic: Official feature request/complaint thread

Is it possible to have the custom titles appear below the avatar like it used to?  Some people's titles are references to their avatars, and the connection isn't very clear anymore.  I figure this is a theme thing, so please consider it as you work on the official NWR theme (assuming one is coming; I think I read that somewhere).

I strongly disagree with that argument.  If a link is going off your page it should open a new window.  This clearly shows a disconnect from YOUR site and the site you are linking to.  It's not as if it's going to open up 5 browser windows, it's just opening one.  Also, in a message board setting it lets the reader pick up EXACTLY where they left off because their browser didn't move.

But the beauty of the web is that everything is connected and one website flows seamlessly into the next. Also, if you want a link to open in a new window, you can always chose to have that happen. But I can't make links behave the way I want them to the way things are now.

I finally figured out what was up.  Long names weren't truncated.  They were just not being fully displayed thanks to this new forum software's tables varying with window size.  I didn't realize it until I resized my browser window and saw some more letters disappear.

I think every time you load a page your time logged on it updated.  So if you log in and then sit there for five minutes and then click on a thread/topic/new page your time will update.  However, if you don't load a new page within a certain time limit (I think 10 minutes, but I haven't experimented throughly) the forums will not give you "credit" for being logged on for that time period.

Make sense?

I think every time you load a page your time logged on it updated.  So if you log in and then sit there for five minutes and then click on a thread/topic/new page your time will update.  However, if you don't load a new page within a certain time limit (I think 10 minutes, but I haven't experimented throughly) the forums will not give you "credit" for being logged on for that time period.

Make sense?

No because I'm pretty prolific.

The lack of a NEW indicator is really annoying, click on the wrong link or scroll a bit and the auto-scroll to the first new post won't help you.

There is a bug with the jump to selector thing. When you first select it, it only shows the current forum you are on now. Then you let it go, after a second or so you can click on it again for the full listing.

It is pretty minor, but I guess you guys would want to know about it.

Do you have slow internet/computer?  It does indeed only show the one at first for me, but the other options quickly pop-up before I have time to do anything else.

Seeing the Wii number option in the profiles reminded me of something I mentioned a long time ago, and even if it does sound unreasonable, it can't hurt to ask.  I think you could do away with the friend codes forum entirely if we could just store all our friend codes in our profiles.  Ideally, this would be part of a game library tracking feature that would give us a place to keep track of the games we own along with links to NWR's news, reviews, screenshots, and forum topics for those games.  There'd also be links to search for other NWR members who own those games, making it easy to find friend codes.

I'm sure that's too much work.

I have a DSL connection so, no, I don't have a slow connection. The page is fully loaded. The forums isn't flash r us.

The computer is a little sluggish, but can run modern software. I did just updated to camino 1.5.5 2 weeks, so that might be it, but I doubt it since this is the only place it happens and I go to another forum running the same software with no issues.

But yeah, It has only been happening for the last couple of days.

The forums do this funny lockup thing when typing a post in Internet Explorer 8.  Which does passe the Acid 2 test.

You go to type and it will lock up.  This is the only site I know that does that.

Just emulate IE7 (which should make it behave itself) for the time being. That release of IE8 is a developer preview and should be treated as such.

Nah, its more about "the average joe isn't using IE yet". That release is about previewing the technology that's planned for IE8. Besides, they're actually aiming to support standards-compliant websites and still support sites which were developed for IE7 and below. I don't think it's worth looking at until MS actually says "GO BETA GO"

Posting from Firefox 3 Beta because IE8 crashed just as Ceric said...

EDIT: Nope, it didn't crash. It just took a long time to fill in the text. But this is in a VM so its not definitive by any measure.

There's a chance that MB shut off uploading of avatars and that's why this happened.  You're best best is most likely to just host the avatar somewhere else and link to it.

I have an idea for a new NWR feature. Not sure if its been mentioned before.

But how about a "Releasing Today" feature where you list the games that come out that day and also link to all your previews, impressions and reviews for those games.

Or do you already have something like that??

Maybe upgrade the Releasing this week feature to include all of that would be alot easier, but you guys are still working on getting htat up beofre the week of release is over, so I don't want to slow that down. How is that coming along by the way?

This is a good idea, because I go to IGN and check release dates for this sole purpose.  But IDK how well NWR is on dates.

You are looking to release NWR to.oh simultaneously with WiiHD

I have another suggestion for the site.
In the talk back section you guys several different types of games, but when it comes to news stories about Wii/DS games, its hard to tell what system the game is for since it hardly gets mentioned int he article.

Would it be possible for ythe staff to put the system the game is for on the subject line

ie. "Shonen Jump Magazine Reveals Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden (DS)"
or
"(Wii) PREVIEWS: Dragon Master Spell Caster"

It would be a big help, especially for games that may have little name recognition.

*So how is NWR 2.0 coming along? ;)

You should see the Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter integration.  It's OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Last.fm
Is that some integrated radio service?
as for Facebook and Twitter, I don't actually use either of those, but I can see how Facebook would be like forum profile 10.0, not sure of the benefit of twitter yet in a forum environment.

What other features are you working on?

Is it possible to get an NWR Hotline or something?

For instance, say i don't have access to the forums or main site and would like to know the latest nintendo news or even report a complaint, or make site suggestions like this one! Why not be able to do it over the phone and have a friendly voice on the other end..?

I nominate this number for use:

i'm sure its familiar to NWR members so its only fitting!

If this forum's software is anything like ZetaBoards, then only the administrators have the ability to set emoticons, create and rename boards, etc. The moderators are just for user management and are limited to the editing, merging, moving, and deleting of posts and topics, as well as editing user information. That's all.

I visited the front page a few times recently (news submission) and noticed that there is a side column where the last 8 Blog Post are listed. I also noticed that there is a lot of empty space below those Blog entries.

I was thinking that maybe you guys could put up a 5 Hot Forum Topics list below that and feature some of the more popular topics of the day.

edit: And how about a "Submit News" link added to that top bar in the forums?
you know the one with "Home", "Help", "Profile" and "Help" on it.

This came up in the Metroid:Other M topic. Kytim was starting to play Super Metroid. He was having some problems with the game and this type of question would be covered in the Gameplay help section. What I am asking is about a retro forum that covers games from last gen to the start of games. Yes I know we have RetroActives but what if someone wanted to to talk about any retro game with out having to be restricted on what game we play.

Is there interest in this sort of thing?

Wow, you were fast in posting that here, Maxi ;)

I too am curious about how we should direct these types of threads/conversations. I'm not sure if a new board or child board would best apply in the this situation though. Are there any other ideas/thoughts people could have about this?

It does cramp the first page of the board. Though it does seem like over doing it to give them their own child board.

THey are clearly stickied in FireFox (pins stuck in them and a darker shade than teh other threads) with a core setting, so I usually skip right over them without even noticing them. But Occasionaly check to see if there are new post in Amazing Deals.

I like how pics are automatically resized to fit the forum, but are basically large thumbnails as you can click them to get the regular size. That's nice new feature.

Looks like the voting feature is available only when using the default theme. I can't use that theme because it tends to only display the signatures of people's posts and not the actual post text.

I've been having a lot of weird little problems lately, but it looks like it's been only me. I've already cleared my cookies and that didn't help. Maybe I'll try reinstalling FireFox and see if that does anything.

I'm seeing a lot of empty posts.  For example, I don't see any text in Stratos' post above.  When I quote him (or if I attempt to modify the message) I can finally see the text.  This just started happening this afternoon.

Is the problem related to the new message voting feature?  I'm using the default theme on Firefox 3.6.2.

In fact, I just posted this and I can't see the text in my own post.  Also, the post is a funky gray color.

Besides removing the NWR hosting of avatars so that now they don't animate

can you add a "next" button at the bottom of multipage threads so that NWR forums will work with Autopage again.

Or change the << previous next >> links at the bottom to mean previous/next page of the thread and not previous/next thread in the forum.

I don't know if it's possible, but could you make it so birthdays don't show up on the home page unless you have a certain number of posts (20, 50, whatever) so we can see which actual people have birthdays without reading through a giant list of bots?

I just wanna add an informal poll to the previous request.

Does anyone use the << previous next >> buttons (located at the top and bottom of every page) at all since it takes you to the next thread?

Would you find the << previous next >> buttons more useful if they led to the previous/next page of the thread you were in?
Title: Re: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread

I often accidentally click the previous/next buttons when meaning to click something else; I don't think I've ever used them for their intended purpose. I always thought they would be better if they navigated between pages instead of threads.

Ok... The new previous/next button look nice but still move to different threads, so I'll make a different suggestion to replace another unused button with something useful.

how about replacing the Go Down/Go Up button with a <<(previous)/(next)>> to goto a different page and not a different thread.

Who even uses those buttons? you can just push Pg Up and Pg Down on your keyboard and get the same result.

I've gotten Autopager to work on NWR, but it's not perfect.
It still tries to load the next page even when you are on the last page.

I'm gonna play with it some more and see if I can figure out exactly how it works, but I think I have to "publish" it before anyone can see the fruits of my labor.

This may already be happening to some degree, but I think in special articles like developer interviews or even reviews could be enhanced if you invited the devs to view the talkback threads of those articles. At the very least they could see and gauge reader interest and maybe receive some feedback about their work. It would be even more awesome if they could actually respond to us in the talkback threads.

I know this would be a rare thing to have happen but after reading the Cosmonauts Dive game interview I began to wonder if the devs were watching the thread for interesting responses or something. Maybe I'm just feeling pampered after the special care and prompt responses that we have received from the Legendo team about their WW2 shooter.

Yes I get the error.I have to refresh the page to show the page correctly.
For some strange reason, the refresh trick works only when MegaByte is online.

referesh works for me everytime.

It's a known bug in the forum software.  I partially fixed it, but I'll put the full fix in soon.
While you fixing things. This isn't really something that's broken but...

Can someone put the "Submit News" link back up at the top of the forums in place of the "E3 Chatroom" link.
E3 is over now and no one is using the chatroom anymore. thanks

Can we just get a Non-Java based chat client? And a link at the top of the forums?

Here's what I want to the T:

1. Replace the shitty java chat client with a flash one like this: http://www.lightirc.com/ (http://www.lightirc.com/)
2. Then put a link at the top of the forums to the chat.
3. THEN, add an option in our profiles that when turned makes the chat client appear at the bottom of forum page. (Not by default). Chat will be used 30x as much and be popular, it will really allow people to setup games fast with each other because chat will always be on their page.

I don't even think this would be that hard, it really just depends on how much access SMF gives you.

Thanks

Uh, we haven't used the Java chat client for years.
I do have plans to integrate it right into the forums.
I'm not going to use Flash crap though.

I found a bug in the forums.

Check out the last post in the NWR Discussion board shown in the image below.

As far as I can tell, this thread either doesn't exist or isn't accessible.  (It's not in the Recycle Bin either.)  Now, by posting this message the Help! post isn't the most currently post in the forum, but I copied the link.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=0.msg623090#new (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=0.msg623090#new)

When you click the link it just directs you to the main forum page.

If you view dhowerter's posts (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;u=9393) there's no record of this post.

This man needs our help and we can't offer any because we don't know what problem he's experienced.  I feel like such a failure!

The post doesn't appear in the actual forum--just in the most recent post section of the main page (which I obviously removed when I posted a few minutes ago).

You can't see it because it's no longer the last post in the NWR Discussion forum--this one is!  (At least until someone makes a new post.)

I posted this in the karma thread and am suggesting it:

I really think we should be able to see who gives karma and for what posts. Every message board i've been a member of does that (you get a PM letting you know who gave you praise/karma/whatever and the post for it, along with optional comments). I really don't think I have done anything worth this much negative karma, I think anybody who gives negative karma should at least have the decency to PM the person and say why (it also helps that person know what not to do).

I have to agree though - the few times I've "smite'd" someone isn't typically because of their regular behavior.  It's because they've made a snippy comment about someone or such.  It'd make more sense if there was a way for individuals to know exactly what post they made that people didn't like.

Imagine that you drive around for the day, then come home a find that a cop has put a ticket in your mailbox that just says "Fine - $75".  You don't know why or what you did.  The next day, the same thing.  How are you supposed to know what it is you're doing if you can't even narrow down what it is you're doing wrong?

Title: Re: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread

Just 2 errors that consistently happen on the forums that I'm gonna point out.

1. when you put a :P in your post and then switch to Advanced edit or actually go back to edit a post, it adds a : after it for everytime the editor is opened.
if you go back to edit a few times it could look like :P:::

2. I don't know if this is a problem outside of Google's Chrome, but everytime you use the advanced editor to post, it will add an extra space for every space you add during that edit. So if you add 1 space, the editor double spaces it for you and if you double space, the editor will quadruple space it for you causing you to go back and edit.

I don't know if you can do anything about this, but I can't start a new topic or a new PM or use the full post editor in Mobile Safari without switching into the Mobile site because it won't let me click into the text box. I can use the Quick Reply box just fine.

While using Chrome the search verification (select all the cats) does not work when not logged in.
it keeps reseting the cats and tells you to select them all again... and again.... and again.

also the advanced editor is out of control (in Chrome).
I used the drop down text size selector and it added [size=78%] to every line in the post and not just the one I highlighted. This was ofcourse after I went back to edit the post.

many other things get screwed up real bad while editing a post too, like the yesterday when I edited a post to include a link, since I forgot to source the article. after I hit save, it screwed up the entire post and made me click back until I had a page that was still unaffected by the edit so that I could re-edit it from scratch. even after the re-edit, certain tags wouldn't stay where I put them or just outright disappear like I never put them there.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with the advanced editor?
especially those of you that use Chrome and/or edit post every once in awhile?

Can there be a text limit something like 420 or 560 (3 or 4x140) for posts? A lot of people have taken to writing short stories as posts or lazily quoting an entire post when they only want to reply to one or two sentences.

I want to read every post to see what a variety of people think on different topics, and I personally think that forcing people to be more concise with their ideas will actually advance the discussions on the boards. I'm not sure how you balance that out with quotes, (maybe institue a separate 140 or 280 character limit on quotes) but I don't think super long rants and posts are helping in any way.

Have I got a website for you (http://twitter.com/).  ;D

A lot of people have taken to ... quoting an entire post when they only want to reply to one or two sentences.

I agree this is a problem, but there's really no way to enforce a policy of only quoting a portion of the post.  I also don't like that Ian doesn't cite who wrote the post he's quoting.
Title: Re: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread
Post by: Mop it up on January 04, 2011, 06:41:25 PM
If there were a post limit, people would just make double, triple, or quadruple posts to keep talking (like some do now when quoting multiple people), which would just make things a mess. Also, few opening topic posts would be able to fit within such a limit, most notably just about everything in Talkback.

So the reason people were getting logged out is that there was a security bug in the forum software such that when people tried to log in as you and failed, you'd get logged out. If your username doesn't match your display name, chances are you didn't see the problem.

On the default theme, links were a different colour than regular text, but it was a very subtle difference and easy to overlook. Often I wouldn't notice links in posts until I logged in, since my account uses the Babylon theme which underlines the links.

So the reason people were getting logged out is that there was a security bug in the forum software such that when people tried to log in as you and failed, you'd get logged out. If your username doesn't match your display name, chances are you didn't see the problem.
Does that mean people are trying to log into our accounts?  ???

E-mail notifications are a bit off for the last couple of days. Normally I would get the e-mail the minute a post is made. But they have not been sent at all more often than not. I have checked and they aren't landing in the spam folder.

Also the same logged off issue, but that hasn't happened for the last 72 hours.

Edit: Never mind I managed to fix it. For some reason the settings changed without my input.

This is less an issue with the forums as an issue with trying to get to the forums, but on Internet Explorer I'm seeing a large banner ad covering the site links at the top of the main site page.  You can still click on the Forums link by moving the cursor to the very right edge of the banner ad, but it's pretty annoying.  I haven't tried this on Firefox yet.

Not getting that in Firefox, but maybe it's because I use Adblock Plus (so I never seen any ads or banners).

OK, Hello everyone, I love the Podcast RFN!! However, I cannot access the NWR sites. I can only access the main site, I cannot click on ANY links on the site. I was able to access the forums by chance by typing in the address by hand. Anytime I click on any links, it freezes my computer. I am running IE8, Windows Vista, and have no problems with any other websites. Please look into what options I can explore, so I can enjoy your site better. Thanks!

It would be good if someone wrote the mod with a way to track who is smiting or applauding and for what post.
(I looked it up on the SMF site and there is nothing like that yet)
Maybe only a single vote per person per post so that it doesn't just become someone logging once an hour to continue a silly smite fest based on a single post they didn't like from someone.
Title: Re: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread

I have seen other messageboards that have it so you get a message when someone smites/applauds you and for what post they did it (even letting the person comment on why they did it).

I would like to install something like that, and have actually tried, but none of the current mods work on our database, and I don't have time to fix them.
Title: Re: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread

I'm not sure that would be a good idea. There are really only two ways I could see that ending up: either people would stop using it altogether, or it would become personal to some people and devolve into conflicts between posters. I think it would be best to just scrap the system completely.
Title: Re: Official new forums feature request/complaint thread
Post by: MegaByte on February 28, 2011, 06:11:50 PM
Well, the ideal system would take into account more than just individual smites/applauds, it would have something akin to Google's PageRank to weigh such activity to reduce abuse. And if it worked well, we might add other incentives...

What about getting rid of smite's? Another board I sometimes post on has a rep system. If you like a post, you rep the person. The more rep you have, the more influence your repping has (i.e. someone with 60 points would have more impact when repping than someone with 12 points). For every 100 points you got, your rep would go up by 1. So someone who has a rep of 124 would cause your score to go up by 1 point and already be 24% closer to going up another (sorry if I didn't explain that clearly, but maybe others know what I am talking about). That board used to have negative reps too, but it just became what insanolor talked about where people used the system to basically get into feuds and attack each other.

-I don't care for it one way or the other, but some people seem to run their whole forum presence based on their score and set out to make sure everyone elses score reflects what they think it should.

There is no accountability as to what you are smiting/applauding and why.

Some people have high scores and I can only guess (for some of them) it's because they are well liked by a devoted few who make sure to applaud them everytime they log in. Others have a certain score for inside joke purposes (Mop-It-Up @ 64 points & Megabyte with ELEET/31337 status). And some are endlessly smited regardless of whether they deserve it or not (Some do deserve it, but to be smited 20 times from one person over a single post is just ridiculous, now imagine it happening from 4-5 separate people at the same time).

What about getting rid of smite's?

Yeah, I don't care much either way.

I do like the vBulletin's Reputation system, where the "smite" and "applaud" is tied to a specific post (the User still has an overall score, but they can see which posts they were positively rep'd for and which posts they got Negative rep's for).  The comments are anonymous, but admins/mods can see who left them so if there's any issues that arise.  It's a good system.

The join dates we have recorded are for the Fusetalk forums, which opened on 2003-01-31. I have some very sporadic data from before that, but if anybody has any archived copies of forums from before that time, send them over, and I'll import them when I have a chance.

Sorry for the necro, but I'm pretty sure I've found a new bug. Or maybe it's a feature, I'm not sure.

I view the forum through "Show unread posts..." and do a quick refresh after I've read the new stuff to catch new posts mid-session. If a new Talkback is opened while I'm browsing, and I view it from Unread Posts and refresh again, it doesn't go off the unread list and the view count doesn't increase.

However, if I leave the site and return, it'll be off the list. Next time it comes up, I'll take a screenshot.

RE: Talkback Threads not being labeled as they are on the front page

I would like to make a little suggestion since I think quite of few of us that comment do mostly read through the forums.

How about changing the icon to the left of the title of the thread depending on what kind of story it is. I'm sure MegaByte could put in some custom icons that say things like "Rumor", "Blog", "News" or "Editorial".

That should end alot of confusion on the forum side of things.

I'm concerned about something I saw a few minutes ago traveling between pages on the forums: a warning from my Symantec Endpoint Protection that there's "Browser Fingerprinting" going on, which has my Anti-Virus/Spyware program rushing to start blocking traffic.  When it occurred, you had the big "Sword Girls" ad splashed across the screen.  This isn't the first time I've seen Endpoint Protection block traffic from a malware/spyware program while on this site, either, as I've run into it several times over the last few days.  Do you know what is going on here?

OK, no one seemed to care the last time I posted about this, but maybe with more information via Norton someone will do something about this?

I've been continually (about once a day) getting security warnings from Norton while visiting these forums.  Here is the information from my new version of Norton:

Severity: High
Activity: An intrusion attempt by hasaci.com was detected
Date & Time: 2012 - 01 - 01 - 3:07:39

IPS Alert Name: Web Attack: Malicious Toolkit Website 9
Attacking Computer: hasaci.com (89.46.251.163, 80)
Attacker URL: hasaci.com/main

Norton keeps Blocking whatever this program is, thankfully, but I have only received this warning when visiting these forums (note: I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser).  Cursory Googling of the term "Hasaci" has not found any results so far.  Will you guys please look into this?  This website may very well have a virus or a nasty piece of spyware.

Might want to check Norton's sight out and see if it is just a false positive. I've heard of that happening from time to time.

Well, I haven't seen this particular piece of malware in quite some time, pretty much since I last posted about it in January.  Chances are that it was attached to a specific ad run on this site that is no longer hosted here.
