Title: Street Pass!
Post by: UncleBob on April 03, 2011, 11:39:33 PM
So, I went around the nearest "big city" today.  Special trip mostly to kill the day, but partially to carry my 3DS around and try to Street Pass someone.

My trip included three GameStops (one in a mall), a Toys R Us, a Target, a Best Buy, two smaller video game stores, a small music store that sells a smaller selection of games, two Mexican grocers, a Walmart, and a Border's that's going out of business.

All of that, I managed to Street Pass one person.  It was at the Best Buy.  Guy's Mii introduced himself, said it was nice to meet me, then said he hated me.  :(

I've been carrying it around with me nearly all the time, and I've had no luck.  The only stores of interest I visited were Best Buy and a Toys R Us, though.

Wow, my experience has been quite different.  I just got my 3DS from Amazon on Wednesday (5 days ago) and I've already gotten 2 in totally random  places.  My first was on Wednesday at Disneyland of all places (Daniel from Arizona wassup!) and then on Friday at a gas station in like South Central LA (hey FearMe, wassup!).

I also live like 2 blocks away from G4's studios, so I figure I may get some just by driving by a window there or something?

I'm amazed at how much I love Streetpass.  When I first heard of it, I never gave it much of a thought and figured it'll just be something extra that I'll never really take advantage of but now I find myself wanting to take my 3ds averywhere even though I won't get a chance to play with it.  I've managed to get a girl Mii at college.  Others I think I'm picking up as I'm driving around lol or waiting for the light becuase I've managed to grab some without ever really going anywhere.  Does anyone know what the range for Streetpass is and how long you have to be within range to exchange info?

Right know I only have 6 Streetpass connections and I live in a rural area.  I haven't tried going to the mall with this yet though which could improve my chances.  I need more people bad, my Mii is sick of waiting to be rescued lol.

Walked through the ginormous local mall for a few hours yesterday with the 3DS in my pocket and picked up 6 hits. Was very suprised. Before that had only two (on separate days).

I love the wee RPG that you can play with StreetPass hits. I wish there was some other way to actually interact though. Like, message back, maybe add as friends. but I suppose Nintendo is just protecting me from bad peple, God bless them  ::)

Can't really send a message back after the passing is done, eh?

BTW, is Spot Pass even enabled yet? I've never seen SWC download anything and the manual talks about some firmware update but I don't know if that means more than just the initial one.

I think SpotPass is enabled though there's likely nothing much to push our way as yet. After I did the firmware update I got a message from Capcom abiout Street Fighter via spotpass. It just said they would update me occasionally unless I opted out. I dunno if that message was connected to the firmware update in some way or not.

I also got a 3D music video pushed with the firmware update which I thought was cool. I guess that's the kind of thing SpotPass notifies you about or maybe even pushes to you if the file is small enough.

I did my first street pass today. In GameStop... I assume with one of the employees. Viewing his info in Mii Plaza, it says his last played game was Super Street Fighter IV. That's also the only game I own... so why didn't we have a figurine battle? Either he didn't set up his fighter figurines in his game or... I don't know why. Has anyone else had a Street Fighter figurine battle?

Nemo, re Street Fighter figurine battles: after you set your team you have to take the additional step of enabling the Street Pass functionality in the game. Its near the top of the "figurine" screen, I think I was momentarily tripped up by this requirement. Hope that helps.

Also, re the SpotPass discussion, Capcom pushed me a code for unlockable Street Fighter figurine yesterday. That's clearly a SpotPass right there.

Woops. I don't think I ever noticed. It's definitely activated now.

I got a code also: DmdkeRvbxc    I wonder if codes are system specific or not?

I'm going to start roaming the halls of the local schools in hopes of getting another Street Pass.  Also, I'm going to wait outside by the bus and shake my 3DS to get steps to use for play coins.  I don't want to get robbed, so I better keep the 3DS below the window line so no one sees it while I'm shaking it.

Here's a scary thought:

It seems like everyone is getting at least a handful of Mii's in the past--- what, 10 days?-- that the 3DS has been out.  It seems nifty, we get pleasantly surprised when we see that green light.

And there's, what--- maybe 1 million, maybe a bit more-- 3DS's out in the wild right now.

What's it going to be like in a year, or 2, or 3, when the 3DS has sold more than 10 or 20 million units.  It seems cute if we get 1 or 2 streetpasses a day, or every other day, but if that rate stays consistent or rises (as it would, as the population of 3DS's on the street grows and grows)....

Boom!  Mii Plaza overpopulation, folks.  That's right.

You've got 5, or 10, or maybe 20 Mii's in your Mii plaza right now.  What happens when you get (and you eventually will) 100, 200, or even 300 Miis?  Do they all display on one screen?  Do  you have to scroll through these hordes and hordes of Miis?  Does the 3DS erase old Miis?  Or do they just linger around, staring at you, craving your attention?

Okay, so this is half-serious.  But now to be completely serious, does anyone know what will happen as the accumulation of streetpasses and Miis increases?  Is there a limit, or does it just keep going and going?  I know this doesn't seem like an issue now, but this may be, a few years down the line.
Title: Re: Street Pass!

I already have to scroll through miis in that. I guess it'll just drop the oldest ones once it runs out of space.

Walked around a shopping area today. I thought it'd be cool to take my 3DS, just in case. Too bad I totally forgot that I had the wireless off. Epic Fail on my part. And schools had just let out, too.

I currently have six Miis in my Street Pass, all of which are male, three are wearing Mario hats, and two I've passed twice. I have not passed more than one person each time I had the 3DS closed. It kinda sucks however that you can't accumulate a number of Miis and use them in Find Mii or Puzzle Swap; you have to immediately use it after it greets you.

Does anyone know what the range is as far as connecting with someone else? And how long you have to be in that range? I was wondering if it was possible to Street Pass someone waiting at a stop light in a car.

I've carried my 3DS around with me 2 days and have had 0 contacts. Not surprising. I live in a town of only around 30,000 people and most areas are not crowded. I figure my only chance is heading to the mall on a busy Saturday.

I've only street passed 2 of my supervisors at work (pretty funny), a Gamestop clerk the week 3DS launched, and a demo unit at BestBuy.

I really enjoy the experience and make it a habit of bringing my 3DS everywhere I go outside my home which was Nintendo's intention all along  ;D

There are a few assorted efforts, but someone should create a website/hub where people with 3DSes can put in their ZIP code, see how many others have a 3DS in their area, and post messages of "Hey, let's have a Street Pass event at the mall on 3rd street!"

It may not be the same, but I use a facebook 3DS app that tells all your friends what your friend code is. Pretty useful.

Also. I still have none, no one at my work can afford it I imagine and I have not had the cash to walk around a mall with out buying things haha.

Next weekend I intend to walk around both malls in my city and maybe wal mart. HOPING to see someone.

Also, I am excited that in the future we will get more of these street passes! Millions of people, this could be great!

I've managed to get a girl Mii at college.

Could be awesome... could be a predator... be careful...

Apparently, a UK commercial for the 3DS mentions streetpass and a small note on the bottom of the screen says 30m, which is around 100 feet. As for time, I've heard seen 0.5 to 1.5 seconds for actual transfer, but you may need a few more second for your 3DS's to find one another.

Found this email chain on another forum:

 Hello,

The maximum range for any wireless function of the Nintendo 3DS is 100 feet. As for the duration of the actual exchange, it depends on what is being transferred, but it should be relatively short.

 Hello!

I was wondering if you can tell me what the range is that the 3DS StreePass function covers when looking for other players. Also, can you tell me what is the approximate duration required for a data exchange between two 3DS machines in StreePass?

 Many thanks, "

Hopefully that means my saturdays spent cruises with my 3DS on the dashboard will pay off  :cool; ... I don't but I may be driven to that one day.

I have only streetpassed one nonfriend or demo unit.  It was at the movie theatres.  Start saving up and go see nerd-ish movies or at least movies that likely gamers might go see.  Or just linger near the snack bar.

I think I'll try Victoria's Secret today... fingers crossed  ;D

I'm finding that StreetPass is changing the way I game during my morning commute.  I don't want to pull out my 3DS and play it on the train lest I miss the opportunity to add a mii to my plaza.  Instead I'm playing Pokemon White (with wifi turned on of course) on my DSi and my 3DS is turned on in my pocket.  To date I have a plaza population of 10, have exchanged dogs with my wife, and got a single Ridge Racer ghost from some random stranger.

I can't wait until I have more games that use StreetPass to exchange information.

@Tanatoes, I don't think you have to have the system in sleep mode for StreetPass to work, do you? I could have sworn I got a hit on the bus the other day while I was playing some other game. Maybe I'm dreaming.

I've really wanted to get a second 3DS so I can test out all kinds of things related to StreetPass.  I have this great plan of finding a straight, long, open road and having the two systems pass each other at varying speeds to see how fast you can be going and still get a hit...

Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: UncleBob on April 21, 2011, 12:45:43 AM
I've been thinking about this more - there's two tests that I need to run before I do the drive-by thing.

First, I need a box, big enough to hold one 3DS, that's made from some material that will disrupt the wireless transmission (or something similar to a cell phone jammer).  Have one 3DS powered off and put the other into sleep mode inside of the box and close it.  Then, turn the second 3DS on.  Once it's booted up, put it into sleep mode.  Then, open the box (or turn off the jammer) and have a stop watch to count the time it takes for the two units to register a StreetPass.

Second, I need to get two units and have two people standing far apart (say, 250 feet).  Turn their units on and put them into sleep mode.  Slowly, have both individuals walk towards one another until the units register the StreetPass.

With these two methods, I could determine the amount of time it takes to register a StreetPass and how close the units need to be in order to trade communication.  With some mathematical wizardry, I should be able to determine the top speed at which two cars traveling opposite directions could be going and still register a StreetPass.
Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: UncleBob on April 21, 2011, 12:54:27 AM
Someone double check my math for me...

Let's say the two 3DS units have to be in range for 5 seconds to complete a StreetPass.
Let's say they have a maximum range of 100 feet.

Two cars, traveling opposite directions, could be traveling no faster than 100 feet per five seconds (20 feet/second, 72,000 feet/hour, or 13.64 miles/hour) in order to be in range long enough to transfer.

Of course, my two numbers there are made up... but if they're close, does that sound right?

Cool

You know UncleBob it be less expensive and time consume to instead:

1. Get the time it take for the 3DS Wireless to turn on and go into Streetpass
2. Using the above as a constant have 1 3DS wireless on and another wireless off.
3. Turn on the Wireless on the Wireless off one timing till the first streetpass hit on the second device. (I'm assuming Streetpass is initially push then pull)
4. Using formula:  Time from Wireless on to Streetpass hit - Wireless on to Streetpass Constant = Actual time for Streetpass first contact

Today I had the pleasant surprise of getting a green light for the first time since I have my 3DS.
Although I got 4 street-passes after visiting a game store in the nearest town, 3 of them were almost certainly of demo units (their names referenced to the local store) and only one was a real user.

That said, it was rather refreshing to play the 'Find Mii' game with Mii's in stead of cats.

So uhh...

Does anyone know how Street Pass technically works? I mean, does it use a WiFi adhoc network? Or some proprietary wireless chip?

I heard that the Internet and Street Pass can't be used simultaneously - that makes me think it's using the wireless card or at the very least, the same band.

Does anyone know? I find it extremely interesting.

This doesn't make sense to me. Why would Street Pass work during a 3DS game, but not during a DS game? Doesn't the 3DS have a background OS that should have all sorts of extra power available while playing a DS game?
What happened to multi-tasking?
I hope this doesn't mean they took the retarded Wii in GC mode means you can't access any extras from the Wii while playing GC approach. That is so stupid and better not carry over to the Wii2. I'm actually hoping that if that part is true, they fix it with the (pre E3?) update.
Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: Stogi on May 09, 2011, 02:30:04 PM
So yeah...

After a bit of research, Street Pass definitely uses an ad-hoc network with TCP protocol to transfer data between 3DS's. Once activated, Street Pass constantly (like ever 2 seconds) sends packets out trying to find another 3DS. For more info, look here: http://gbatemp.net/t289980-streetpass

The only problem so far is that no one has 'listened' to a 3DS to 3DS exchange, whether it's the "handshake" (the authorization to exchange data) or the data transfer itself. Once more information is uncovered, we can figure out if the one 3DS acts like an access point allowing the other to trade data or if both are simply able to do client to client transfers.

Actually if you have used on of the DS Download points with a 3DS you'll notice once it fines one it throws you wholesale into the original DS OS.  That's why it doesn't work I'm sure its exactly the same it just throws you into full DS emulation OS and all.

It should work in a window like Virtual PC. An old OS in a window of my new OS.

I hope they fix that. It's just lazy on Nintendo's part.
Full BC is great an all, but why cut off all the other features just to do it when you could easily do both?

It should work in a window like Virtual PC. An old OS in a window of my new OS.

I hope they fix that. It's just lazy on Nintendo's part.
Full BC is great an all, but why cut off all the other features just to do it when you could easily do both?
That's intensive even when running the same OS in a Virtual PC.  That's part of the reason people multi-boot and Bootcamp exists.  How they are doing it is probably the most efficient way on all fronts but you do lose new features that way.

Can someone help me with StreetPass?  I can't get it to work.  My friend came over and we tried to do it.  But we had to delete our network setting cause you can't streetpass if you are online.  Plus there was nowhere to turn offline and have just streetpass?  We had street pass on and had our 3DS's on the whole time and it never streetpassed.  Is it because we were already friends?

Thanks.

What Nintendo would need to do is rewrite the DS firmware to take into account the new hardware and features, rather than simply switching the hardware to DS mode. That way, you wouldn't have the overhead from the full 3DS firmware, but could still get the needed features. But it would require a fair amount of development and testing.

I've had the 3DS since 1 week after launch. I've carried it with me probably 40% of the time, including every time I'm going to a store such as the mall, or whatever. Not 1 street pass yet.

I've had mine since launch..    I live in the country, but every time I go to town I take it with me.   I have gotten one street pass and it was last week.   I got it at Sam's Club of all places.  Taken the thing to mall's, my nieces college campas when I went to get her, all kinds of places.   When I was there, I looked around and didn't see any demo units.   Judging just by the Mii I got and stuff pretty sure it was a real person too.   Other than that, I've gotten nadda.

Got 45 Today !!!!!

Went to Dallas Anime Convention and noticed so many people with 3DS's just playing games. I found it hard to resist the green light and I had to keep checking them out. Not sure if I can still get more mii's when doing that process.

I got ALL the panels started now in the PUZZLE SWAP, I was missing 5 :@ !! I completed the Legend of Zelda one which has great graphics and 3D. I went to Gamestop today too because it hosted streetpass party and I only got 3 from that.

Yeah, that limit is ridiculous. I didn't find out about the limit until after the press conference, so I probably missed out on a few hundred. Also, you get a pretty funny image when you realize that Nintendo employees had to be clearing out execs' StreetPasses all during E3 so that more passers-by could get tagged.

I remember hearing about this 10 limit so it was in the back of my mind today, I think in a podcast they said about clearing it out or remembering to check it before you turn off or something. So I'm glad I did clear it out from time to time, but I don't like that I HAVE TO PLAY the FIND MII or Puzzle Swap, I rather just do it all later.

No, it won't. Because of the nature of streetpassing, where multiple passings let you leave personal messages and rate the other person, two 3DSs must share with each other, you can't do a one-way pass.

On the inverse of what MegaByte was saying, while I knew about the 10 limit, most of the time I was too busy to check my 3DS during the actual show and conferences. End result?  The only gold pants Miis I have are Peter Moore from EA and some fellow named "Karthik" from Vicarious Visions. I'm sure if I had cleared out the street pass all during the show I would have had tons more, but it didn't cross my mind at several points, especially after I had completed Find Mii and the picture collection.

Well, that's pretty lame.

I wonder if the 3DS systems these guys are using might be running special software.  I mean, they already can do gold-pants Miis, which we can't do.  I wonder if these 3DS systems run something where they only send out the Mii and don't receive.

The gold pants Miis are certainly different as you cant copy them or create QR codes. If you send them (from plaza to Mii creator or person to person) the original disappears. However, given the limited number of gold pants Miis I received, I think they were still limited somehow.

I've found Street Passes extremely hard to get. I now have 4 and that's only because I've been traveling. I got the first at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. Then I got one walking around my neighborhood which nearly shocked me. I walk atleast an hour every day and usually carry it with me. It was a surprise when I got home and actually saw the green light. Then, I carried the 3DS with me at Universal Studios in Orlando Florida and picked up 2 there. It's always a nice feeling when you see the green light. Too bad it doesn't happen more often.

How are you guys carrying your 3DSes around?  I tried bringing my 3DS with me to work one day (hoping for coins and not expecting or getting Street Passes), and I found it way too bulky to be comfortable in my pocket.  I'd like to figure out a convenient way to take it with me, but I fear I may end up only having it with me in the winter, since I'll have extra pockets in my jacket.

I once carried my 3DS in the pocket of my jeans, and it is so heavy that my jeans fell down and I had to use a belt to hold them up. It's definitely a bit much for normal pockets. I'm hesitant to place it in my purse since I'm worried what might happen to it when in close proximity to my taser, though that probably wouldn't be an option for you anyway...

I think it be fine by the taser.  Unless it randomly warms up and jolts things.  Just something else with a battery.

My wallet is heavier then the 3DS I'm pretty sure.  I'll have to find my little scale and weigh both of them.  For the common adult male pocket it should be fine.

Now women pockets *shrug*  I don't know what they were thinking on those.  Though their is always the purse option unless you have a territorial vengeful taser trying to dominate the purse.

For the record I wear male 36x36 Dress Pants most of the times.  36x36 in women sizes be literally a circus tent...

I went out to meet with the Street Pass NYC group at Coney Island this past weekend, but I couldn't find anyone. However on my way to meet my fiance I actually saw a woman playing a 3DS and the only free spot on the train was next to her so I stood next to her, watched her play Resident Evil and then took my system out to play Street Fighter. We exchanged Miis and Street Fighter data. On my way home from the beach I picked up one random street pass. Finally since my fiance has a 3DS we street pass at least three times a day.
I just got my system and even though I live in New York and it's Summer getting a Street Pass is not as easy as it seems, though it's not as scarce as some other people have been reporting.

I've got 30 StreetPasses with 36 tags total. I'd have to say only 8 of those are from passing people in public. The others are from two StreetPass events I attended. Dan O'Leary (President of nSpace) was there and he had 430 tags on his 3DS. Probably from all the gaming shows he goes to.

Yesterday I got four street passes. Two were repeats one from someone I know and the other from a stranger who takes the same train as myself, this person has a strange looking Mii and it just weirds me out to see it- thankfully I haven't seen anyone who looks like that Mii. The other two were completely random people. These four came after a whole week of traveling around the city and getting no StreetPasses the entire time.

Yeah, it's definitely not a daily thing, but I've had mine since launch and I've got around 20 streetpasses, with about 15 of them "natural" (i.e. totally random people at non-game events).  5 are just friends that I intentionally met because I knew they had 3DS's.  To be honest, more than streetpassing people you know, the natural streetpasses are the most awesome.  I've gotten some at the mall, one I got at a Dodger game, another I got at Disneyland literally 2 days after launch.

The funniest thing that's happened so far was at the technical rehearsal for my daughter's ballet recital a month ago.  I was in the theater, waiting for my daughter's class to get out of their green rooms and onto stage, when I saw some 10-ish year old kid a few rows down playing with a 3DS.  Now, ignore the fact that that kid's parent bought them a $250 toy.  A 10 year old.   Whatever.  I immediately checked my 3DS, which was in my messenger bag, and I noticed I wasn't getting a streetpass.  What the hell.  The kid was literally 12 feet away.  Then I noticed that the kid's wireless light (orange, bottom panel, top near the hinge) was off.  I was willing to bet that this stupid kid didn't even know how to use their 3DS and probably didn't have streetpass set up or turned on.  Pretty frustrating.  I really wanted to walk down and teach them how to turn on their streetpass, but...well, non-gamers would probably view a 32 year old man walking up to a totally random kid to get them to mess with their game console as just a little creepy, bordering on pervy.

The other day I went out and visited friends. I saw I got some StreetPass and ignored it to show off Ocarina of Time. I was out for a long time, but I got home and ended up with 4 or 5 tags. A few days later I went to the Nintendo Store just for StreetPass and got around 11 tags. On the way home I StreetPassed someone who has to either live in my building or my block because whenever I'm coming home or wandering around I tag them. It's crazy because I haven't seen anyone playing any games around here and my fiance hasn't tagged her so I'm thinking I'm crazy, but I feel like I've got to know what's going on. This person has only StreetPassed me twice, but I'm the only person she's tagged, but my fiance has been with me twice with her 3DS, but she didn't get any StreetPass. Weird!

I forgot to mention when I got my first Street Pass. It was about two weeks ago, I was cleaning my place and decided to have the 3DS in my pocket to rack up some coins for the day. Once I was finished, I went out to grab a sub for dinner and still had it on me, and when I got home and took it out, I saw the green light for the first time. Seems I got one from a sub shop, of all places. I actually haven't gotten any when I've gone to a game store, which might be surprising...

I completed al the puzzles and gained all the hats for my Mii last week and I'm officially done with Street Pass until Nintendo adds some new content for the feature. I'm still excited to Street Pass someone new, but seeing as how I can't use their Mii characters in any way it seems sort of pointless to me.
Meanwhile I'm hoarding Play Coins and I'm getting a good pile up. Is there any 3DS game that uses them in a cool way? The games I have don't really do anything with them.
Also I wanted to mention the most popular game among the people I've Street Passed has been Ocarina of Time with Street Fighter coming in second. I got someone who was playing Number Battle Nintendo and someone today who was playing Professor Layton.

Super Street Fighter IV uses the play coins well. You use them to purchase figurines for StreetPass battles. I have had a few and they are fun. Its also fun just buying the figures in-game.

I heard recently that you can use the coins to buy additional levels or itemsm or something in the AR games but I haven't tried this yet.

This is true. In Street Fighter you can buy more trophies, which I guess I could use more of and there are about six additional AR Modes you can unlock with Play Coins. My fiance got a 3DS before me and I played all the AR games a lot, but since I got my system I haven't really touched them. I guess I should get on that.

I went out shopping early yesterday and I got a Street Pass. This is interesting because the Mii really looks like a woman I saw pass me in the store. She wasn't a little girl or an old woman, but a young lady and if I'm not mistaken she was a mother. This is the second time I've seen this too- a mother with a 3DS system. Once on the train and then yesterday in the mall. So yeah- Mom's rockin that 3DS.

We all have now completed Find Mii twice, have all the hats, and I am now one puzzle piece away from having all 90. It really helps when you can street pass the same folk multuple times.

We also each have all the Amabassador games. Bliss!

Living in Norway I´ve still had no luck in meeting anyone in streetpass. I´ve been to big hotels with it, and all over the biggest city in the country (Bergen). The only way I´m getting any of the stuff is through the play coins, if they hadn´t added that it would be impossible for some people to experience alot of the preinstalled stuff on the 3DS.

I even saw a guy with a 3DS and I tried walking close to him but still no dice. Guess I live in the wrong country for Nintendo (this is Sony land)

It doesn't.  I'm fairly sure we confirmed that in the first 3 pages.  When you have a DS game in or a DSiWare game going the DS literally goes into the DS OS to run it.

I have a feeling that's simply because there's a chip in there that all it does is the pedometer and the system just asks for how much.

So what are everyone's stats with Street Pass? I've had the system since launch and with the exception of one month, carry it with me nearly everywhere I go as evidenced by 1.3 million steps. In that time I've street passed 12 people a total of 14 times. Five of the 12 I got when I was traveling (1 at Columbus OH Zoo, 2 at Universal Studios in FL, and 2 at the airports to get to FL).

So really, I've gotten 7 local which I guess is better than none but I wish it was a lot more. I'm an adult and don't attend school. So these have basically been received when I've been in local stores or out walking around the neighborhood. With Mario Kart coming out and next year Animal Crossing I wish I was street passing a whole lot more.

I went to the Times Square event for Super Mario 3D Land and I got over 100 Street Passes. Right now my tags are at 439 and my Plaza Population is 260. I take it everywhere with me and I'm still surprised when I get a Street Pass. I don't go to school, just to work and around the city and I get street passes everywhere at all times of the day. It's cool, I hope Nintendo includes the Miis you tag in interesting and fun ways in the future.

Oh man.   Maybe it's because I live in a larger city, but right now I have 36 streetpasses, and 6 of those I've gotten in the last few weeks.  I carry my 3DS everywhere, and I've gotten streetpasses in the most random of places.   I took my daughter to go see Yo Gabba Gabba live last weekend, and I got 3 then, 2 of them Japanese 3DS's (I think they're were playing the Japanese version of Okamiden).  I've got one at the supermarket on the day that 3D Land came out.  And yet I drive by G4 studios everyday on my way home from work, and I've never gotten a streetpass there.  I suspect it's either a matter of distance, duration, or that G4 hates Nintendo and they don't have a single 3DS in their building.

Sweet man, wish I could make a run like that.  I am getting no play on Streetpass.  The only people I've hit over the past month or so is the multiple tags of one guy that works at one of the local Gamestops.  Even trips to the mall have yielded nothing and in my area, that's basically the only place where you're bound to run into a large amount of people.  I need to take a trip down to the city or some damn gaming/comic convention lol.

I got a question about Street Pass.

How far away can someone be from you and you still get a pass from them? And how long do you need to stay next to them to complete the pass?

Not sure about distance, but I was waiting for a train the other day and an express train passed through the station. It didn't stop, but I got two street passes during the time it passed. I would say the train was about 10 feet away.
Alternately I was several rooms away at home and I got a street pass from the other 3DS in the other side of the apartment.

That's funny, because the reason I was asking is that I was passing by the BART train earlier and I pulled up next to it and slowed down to match its speed to see if I could catch a Street Pass or two.
I was only near the front half of the train, and had no luck, so I was wondering if it was possible.
Also the closest I could get was still about 15 ft away still.

Until yesterday, I'd had next to no luck with StreetPass, only connecting with two friends who bought the system. Yesterday, I drove to a cinema and got 5 passes! A microscopic achievement compared to some of you, but having been unable to really utilise the StreetPass Mii Plaza and such, I was chuffed. Now that the 3DS has had a Christmas to gain a significant uptake, I might have to start carrying it around everywhere.

I'm still having next to no luck with Street Pass. I'm hoping a few people got this for Christmas and it picks up. I went to the local mall a couple days before Christmas and spent around 2 hours in there. Not one Street Pass was made. Then a couple days ago I went to visit a friend in Columbus OH. We went to eat lunch at a Dave and Busters...again, not one street pass. I think I'm at around 16 total now but have had it since launch. If you take out the tags I've gotten on vacations, I'm probably averaging one per month.

I've never ever gotten a Street Pass in a Game Stop.
Today I got five SPs and one of them was Isaiah Trforce Johnson- the guy who was the first to get a Wii in North America and the first to get a 3DS. I also beat Find Mii II today. A pretty cool way to close the year out.

Sadly, the demos aren't set to Street Pass by default.  Depending on the demo cart in the system, it can be impossible (as far as I know) to exit out to the main menu and set it up. :(  Demo systems can be hit-or-miss, basically depending on if someone set it up.

I've contemplated mailing my 3DS out somewhere and back to see if it gets any Street Passes while traveling in the mail...

Go spend a day or 2 at Disneyland or Universal Studios. You'll be done in no time.
Whether it's all the street passes you get or all the walking you do which will get you coins, you'll make a bunch of progress in a very short amount of time.

I didn't start messing with any of that until just before the trip and I collected more than 80 puzzle pieces and finished the 1st round of Find Mii in that time. (I didn't properly clear the first 2 batches through the games before accepting new Mii's :( )
Title: Re: Street Pass!

I finished the first quest probably using 95% purchased level 1 and 2 Miis. It's not that hard to finish it without street passing others.

Also, I did go to Universal Studios last summer and got a grand total of 2 tags. I'm sure it would be better now but I expected more. You only get 10 coins per day, 1,000 steps is nothing. I normally get that even if I don't leave the house in a day.
Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on January 04, 2012, 04:07:39 PM
Are you sure you only get 10 coins a day? so it breaks down to 100 steps = 1 coin?

because in 1 day I had 20,000 steps, but since I was constantly buying Mii's for Find Mii (to fill in the blanks during street passes), I never paid attention to how many I got that day. I also didn't know the conversion rate, so it wouldn't have really mattered anyway ;D

.... I should have had 200 coins that day. I would've been set for puzzle swap, Find Mii and Swapnote too had I gotten all my coins for all my steps that week. >:(

Yes, you've got it exact, 100 steps = 1 coin, 10 coins per day max. I try to walk 10,000 steps per day for health purposes and I usually have my 3DS with me (have like 1.5 million steps total, lol) but 10 coins a day is all you'll get.

Well, the 3DS's gyro sensors, much like the Wii's, are not exact.  I probably walk far less than 1000 steps a day, but I always get 10 coins without fail.  Seems it can't tell the difference between "steps" and "riding around in a car."

I got the streetpass at a "Japan Festival" sponsored by the Japanese Business Association of Southern California.  They had a whole bunch of anime geeks there (there was an anime store that had a booth, and which I'm guessing led to there being a cosplay contest, etc...).  Surprised I only got 7 streetpasses.

Hey, I just joined this forum.

Anyway, my Mii Plaza has a population of 341, with 387 tags.

For those of you just getting 3D's I can tell you my secret. In everyday life I tend to get the occasional pass from my weekend job (a retail store), malls, and Gamestops. But if you REALLY want to hit Street Pass gold go to ANY video game, comic book, or anime convention. The bigger they are the more Street Passes you'll get. Since I'd had my 3DS here in  Michigan I've been to the Motor City Comic-con, a small anime convention called Godaikocon (I got at least 30-50 there), and a big anime convention called Youmacon (I got hundreds from this one, I even got Street Passed in my hotel room). This weekend there's another anime convention I'm attending called Shuto-con in Lansing and hopefully I can get my population to break 400 (500 if I'm really lucky).

I'm disappointed by how many people have NOT updated 3DS to 3.0.06, time and time again I get street passes and they got NO PUZZLE PIECES FOR ME. I have all the panels and find it hard to believe that so many people NEVER cared to update and get new panels.

I think Nintendo should FORCE the big 3.0.06 update on people with new games. Kid Icarus, Mario Tennis Open should have the update so anyone that hasn't updated will. Screw all the people who mod, that's not my problem, I want puzzle pieces.

if they won't do this at least make it guaranteed or more a sporting chance that I will buy a new piece. I hate with a passion getting the same piece I already have. It might take YEARS to get some panels complete because getting those ' blue middle spaces' that are only accessible via street pass.

Do you have some kind of link to a website that points these conventions out maybe?

To be truthful the best resource is just google search on the Internet. Usually if you put down something like "Anime/comic Book conventions in (insert State name here)" you may get results. Keep in mind guys that when Nintendo designed this thing they primarily had densely populated areas in Japan and few large US cities in mind. I can imagine this thing going nuts in someplace like Tokyo or Akihabara while someplace more traditional like Kyoto or Osaka...not so much. Even though Michigan is the "boonies" compared to the West coast and East coast it has enough going on that I've managed to get 523 tags, and a Street Pass population of 415 (yes, the con made it go up) in the year since I got my 3DS. But, as I stated, you get the most when you go to events where you KNOW there's going to be at least a few people with a 3DS. Like, when I pick up Kid Icarus tomorrow I know I'll get at least one at my local Gamestop because the guy that works there always Streetpasses me (and I know he's figured out that it's me because of the same pattern).

But I definitely think that people who live in small cities/towns will have a harder time of it. My only suggestion is maybe plan a vacation to something like a big name anime convention or New York comic-con. It's almost impossible not to Street pass at any events that tend to draw genre savy cults.

There are two 3DS systems in my house and they Street Pass several times daily- about three times. Unfortunately in the Mii Plaza Gate when the two Miis meet they state that they have met 99 Times. I would like to see Nintendo keep a higher count of this, but I've noticed this before the first update. I doubt many will get to Street Pass someone 99 times unless they are in a similar situation as myself, but it would still be nice to know just how many times I've really Street Passed someone else.

Holy crap, I have hit the Streetpass Motherload.  In the space of 5 or 6 hours, within 1 square mile, I have gotten 21 streetpasses.  And no, this was not a gaming, anime, cosplay, or general nerd convention.  This was not a college campus, a gamestop, or a streetpass gathering.

This was a place, a magical place, a place which many call the happiest place on Earth.  The place where, fittingly, I got my very first Streetpass 2 days after launch last year.

Yes, my friends, that place was Disneyland.  Freakin Disneyland.  On a very uncrowded Mother's Day.

Just wanted to share.  Oh, and some guy named Cardfrek who works at Disneyland (I know this because that's what his Mii said) has a NES Hat.   Not Famicom.  NES.   Oh, I want that hat so bad.  What do you have to do to get that?

As I recall... the NES hat is in Find Mii 2 Second Quest. It's located on the bottom path, behind a locked door, towards the end of the path (before all the paths merge together). I think you get the NES hat the second time you beat that room and a Famicom hat the third time. I forget what you get the first time you beat it.

My advice is to check your 3DS OFTEN.   I'm pretty sure that I got a ton during the parade, just because of all the people who are gathered in a small area.   I also suspect I missed out on a lot just because my 3DS had already hit its limit of 10.

I usually hate going to Disneyland, because it's crowded and expensive and I've been there about 50 times and I'm getting to be too old to enjoy it.  But man, the streetpasses make it a lot more bearable.

Wow.   That really isn't very much.   You must live in a not-so-densely populated area.   I live in the middle of the city, and I have 105 streetpasses, with just 1 of them being a repeat.   And all my streetpasses are "natural," i.e. I have never been to E3, Pax, Any streetpass gatherings, or even that Zelda concert.

I have had about 17 StreetPasses, 4 with the same person (not on purpose, I guess he hangs out near the path I walk to the bus after work). I live in a medium sized city (about 200K), so I am disappointed. They need to revamp the system so people can do more since I still haven't finished Find Mii, and I might not even beat Find Mii II once (yet alone multiple times).

Yeah, I live in a small town, approx 35,000. Of my 40 some Street Passes, I think 7 are from my daughter (I don't live with her). The rest are all natural with no conventions or anything like that. I do have some repeats but I have no idea who these people are in real life.

I agree.   While I am lucky (or cursed, depending on your opinion...me and my wife desperately want to move out into the suburbs or a much smaller town) to live in Metropolitan Los Angeles, I can see how it would be difficult to get streetpasses.   Funny enough, I drive by G4 studios everyday, and I've never gotten a single streetpass there.

But I also think as kids get more 3DS's, we're going to see streetpass rates go up.  Just the other day, I got 2 streetpasses and I'm pretty sure that I got them from my daughter's elementary school as I was dropping her off.  I know it's had to tell between children and adult Mii's, but their Mii messages were completely without humor or sarcasm (something like "I like parties" and "I like games") and they were both playing Mario and Sonic Olympics.  Smells of the kinds of things little kids would say.

I did StreetPass last week on the bus with a kid who looked like he was about 8. Either he just got his 3DS or he barely has used Puzzle Swap since I got no new pieces from him (though at least I got him for Find Mii).

Why do people feel the need to cheat?

I usually walk 4-5 miles every day and always take my 3DS with me hoping to get a Street Pass. I normally take the same path through my neighborhood. Most days are unsuccessful but every once in awhile, I'll get a surprise. I did hit upon a "hotspot" in which I was passing someone's house who owned a 3DS. I was able to pinpoint about where the house is located so I tried to make sure I was always passing by to try to get a Street Pass. Over the months we Street Passed maybe 8 or 9 times. We both live in West Virginia. Then, about three weeks ago I Street Passed him only to see he was now claiming to be from Hawaii. Needless to say, I wasn't amused because Hawaii is now complete on my map. I'd love to pass someone from Hawaii but I want it to be legit. Then, I Street Passed him a couple days ago to find he is now from Mississippi, so that is another fake "fill in" on my map. I've decided to alter my route and will no longer be Street Passing him.

I know, some will think I'm weird, but I hate it when people "cheat" like that. I want no part of it. Anyone else experienced something like this, or just not care?

I recently went on vacation to Florida and had planned to do a day at Disney. I was looking more forward to the Street Passing than the actual park. We went to Universal last year and I only got 2 street passes the whole day which was disappointing. However, at the last moment plans were changed so we didn't end up going. We did go to a museum for kids called MOSI which resulted in 2 street passes, one of which the guy had nearly every puzzle piece available. But the trip down and back at the airports resulted in 0 street passes.

Also, in my previous post I mentioned some guy in my neighborhood changing his location to cheat at street passing. The other day I accidentally walked by his house and street passed him. Now he's from Puerto Rico. What a jerk.

Nintendad - if you delete his Mii from your 3DS, does it save his locations?

As for Anguilla - I've got one of those too.  I assume it has something to do with the fact that Anguilla is the first option on the selection screen for countries.

Aside from a birthday boy I randomly passed by in best Buy and my brother, the only places I seem to get them are game stop and TrU.   Which kinda sucks for geing those pink pieces for puzzles. Only I got was from the guy at E3.  For some reason BB's unit is stuck in demo video mode so to speak so can't get anything from it.  Can't even access Nintendo Zone, even though it shows as being active when I visit.  Though I can get on NZ at Mcdonald's....

Yeah I got Anguilla marked as well. Was excited until I saw it was an African country.  I seriously doubt people from there would be coming to a non big city where I live.

3DS demo carts won't let you exit to the system menu.  I've read about several different button combos that you're supposed to be able to hold down to get it to boot to the menu, but I've never been able to make them work.

With that said, I've determined that you can, if you play your cards right, jam a key or something into the back of the demo unit just enough to pop the cartridge out, letting you boot to the system menu.

Just don't get caught. ;)

Well, I used to live in Oakland a long time ago (circa 2000) so things may have changed, but I'd imagine if you walked around Telegraph near places like Smart Alec's or maybe the end where that comic book shop is, you'd get at least a few streetpasses everyday.

I moved to a new apartment and neighborhood a few months ago. My steady stream of insane Street Pass tags has dropped down to one or two a day, sometimes even none. During the second month in my place I got a tag and while I have two systems in my place only oner was present. It turns out a kid upstairs has one so every now and then we Street Pass each other.
So I also get Street Passes randomly if I'm out sometimes and it's even cooler because I have been retagging people I met randomly before at game events. I got new locations for Street Passes from Aruba and Saudi Arabia, there are no maps for these locations. Also I think everyone who says their from Anguilla is lying, unless they're not.

I can understand some Locations not having a map of the country, but I Street Passed someone from Italy and there's no map. Really?? I would have thought Italy would be big enough to get a map. I wonder what the criteria was set to decide which countries got a map and which ones wouldn't. I mean how hard would a map of every major country would have been?

**Edit**
I want to take back my comments about Italy not having a map. There is one, the person is from Italy, but didn't list a city or province so that is why it the notification said there was "no map" available.

Here's a list of locations that have no maps available:

St. Lucia
Mexico
Ecuador
Dominican Republic
Brazil
Aruba
Argentina
Antigua and Barbuda
Anguilla
Saudi Arabia
Denmark

Here's a list of locations that have no maps available:

St. Lucia

St. Lucia is TINY.

I was going to say it's about the size of 5 towns... but then I googled it and here's what a wiki article had to say:

"comparative area: The same as Toronto or 3.5 times the size of Washington, DC"

Anyway... you wouldn't want to break it down into smaller areas for StreetPass purposes.

I have been passed by a lot of different countries, but not a lot of true people from those countries.  So far Japan has been the only true country to show a map for. And that was from a legitimate pass from someone with a japanese 3ds.  But a lot of other countries don't have them. I would think it would be bad if you got a 3ds and didnt have a map of your own country on the globe.  I guess a better question is what countries DO have maps?
Title: Re: Street Pass!

It's pretty strange, there are many countries without maps. I wonder if Nintendo would ever add maps that were missing, it's not like getting a map is hard these days. I wonder what the criteria was for Map or No Map. Why would they not include Australia? It's so weird.

I recently spent four days in Pittsburgh and not only did I not get a single Street Pass, but I didn't even see a video game store,  not even around the downtown city area. Is anyone from there, did I miss anything??

Okay, I have just 2 things to say to all streetpassers, especially new 3DS owners:

1.  Set your country correctly!  I know you don't live in Anguilla, you were just lazy and picked the first country choice instead of scrolling down to United States!  I've got like 30 streetpasses with people who claim they are from Anguilla!   That is not demographically possible in Los Angeles, unless there is an Anguillan enclave of immigrants that I have never noticed!

2.  Do some of your darn puzzles!   Yes, I know I'm an ambassador and I've had this thing since launch, but it seems that 9 out of 10 of all my streetpasses don't give me any new puzzle pieces!  What are you using those coins for anyway?   Downloading new DOA costumes?   Purchasing the really crappy guns in RE:R raid mode?  I doubt it!

I blame Nintendo for the country thing.  I mean, geesh - these units are made for sale in the US, Canada and Mexico (Latin American countries, perhaps?)  Why not make these three countries default to the top of the list in our firmware?

Anyway, I'm roughly 100 pieces short.  I rarely use coins for puzzles because it's such a huge waste with the way they repeat.  I do have high, high hopes of finishing off my puzzles later this month when I hit up the Zelda concert in Chicago.  I got over 100 Street Passes at the last one, so this should finish me off, assuming I get the right people with the right pieces.

As for Purple Pieces... hey Nintendo... Remember us ambassadors?  Wouldn't it be great if you gave us all some free purple pieces so we can share the 3DS joy?  You know, like ambassadors should... :D

I don't really have time to go to concerts, except for Disney on Ice or the Fresh Beat Band.  Though I did get 5 streetpasses at the Yo Gabba Gabba concert last year.  (FYI - I am not namedropping hipster bands)

It's just very hard for me these days to make progress in my puzzles.   I've got 5 incomplete puzzles, and I'm missing only purple pieces and 1 or 2 normal pieces, so I can spend millions of coins and never fill those.

*sigh*  I'm sure that when people streetpass me, they probably lose their **** when they look at the puzzle pieces I'm offering.

I've got all the normal pieces, but am missing a ton of pink pieces. There is no way I'll ever get them all. I mean with maybe one Street Pass a week and most of the time they don't have any pieces for you, it's about impossible. Heck, I'd be willing to pay 20 coins to get a pink piece just to have a chance.

As for the countries, I kept Street Passing a guy that was changing his all the time. I'd like them to be legit so I eventually just blocked him.

This time of year there are several Apple Festivals 'round here and after visiting them here is my report:

Johnny Appleseed Festival (Fort Wayne, IN) - 7 street passes!  (my most at one time)  Including 3 NSMB2 coin rush exchanges.  Excellent!

Well, the most I ever got in one day was 254, and that was on the second day of Anime Expo, so I guess it is to be expected  ;D ! I usually get about 6-7 when I am at school, but aside from that, I am lucky to get 1 when I actually decide to go out. Now my girlfriend has one and I am suprised to see that she turns it off a lot when she is walking around (like powers it down completely), and when I explained to her that the street pass feature doesn't work unless it's on, she leaves it on now. I guess what I am saying is I wonder if people just don't realize that they won't get any street passes if they power down the system completely?

It could also be that a lot of people don't have them yet, but who knows xD?

I HAVE ALL THE PUZZLES (for the US... for now...)

The Zelda concert in Chicago was AWESOME. :D

Got ~150+ Street Passes.  Completed all my puzzles.  Added a lot of states (including, supposedly, California, Texas, Idaho, Delaware and... Hawaii?).  Added a second (supposed) Mexico Street Pass.  Interesting though - this one was from a different "Region" in Mexico.  Even though there's no map there.  Weird.

More annoying... I was hoping to get a second tag on someone - because, likely, that would mean they were at the Zelda concert in Atlanta as well (unless they spend a lot of time in Carmi, Illinois... :D).  I didn't.

The guy who went with me has a 3DS (Ambassador unit) but never got into Street Passes.  His unit only had two other Street Passes before yesterday - from when he went to LEGO Land in Chicago some time ago.

Somehow he managed to get a second tag on one of those two people. :D :D :D

Most hilarious moment: random girl asks me what I am playing as I check streetpasses during intermission. I tell her Streetpass, she asks what that is, I tell her its a thing bult into the 3DS, has little games and puzzles, etc.

She says, "Oh I didn't know about that. I have that same system at home. I wish I had brought it!"

It amazes me that people don't fully understand the things they own/use everyday. Boggles my mind.

To be fair, unless you actually hit the Mii Plaza, you would never know.   Especially if you just use it to play games.

To be even fairer, how many of us completely understand Streetpass, how it works, and what its rules are, like:

distance
speed
amount of data transmitted
what happens if data transfer is incomplete
the amount of time required for the data transfer to occur
does the data transfer require an exchange between 3DS's
how many times does that exchange have to occur
how long do you have to wait for a 2nd streetpass
what happens if there are a large number of 3DS's that encounter each other at one time
which 3DS's get priority for the streetpass
etc
etc

In the year and a half since launch, people have pieced together anecdotal information from a combination of personal experience and internet message board hearsay, but Nintendo, in its Willy Wonka mentality, has never really outlined this stuff.   You'd think this would make a good Iwata Asks.

I HAVE ALL THE PUZZLES (for the US... for now...)

Congrats! I finished off the last of my puzzles earlier this week as well, thanks to a steady stream of guests coming through the Park one day.  I'm trying to finish off my first (and likely only) run through Find Mii as well, but that last enemy is pretty ridiculous in terms of sheer HP.

I've been hearing online that a new Spotpass puzzle went up for Kirby's Return to Dreamland tonight.  That's...random. I was expecting a Paper Mario: Sticker Star one by now.  I'd start on the new puzzle but...my 3DS is doing what it does best lately: sit in a corner at work and soak up Streetpasses while I play actual games on other devices here at home.  :P:

I've been really lucky with StreetPass living in Toronto. I grab 2-5 on my daily commute, and have near a thousand total now. Completed the puzzles long ago and have all the hats in Find Mii. It's always sad to hear people on forums and podcast who have passed five people since launch and can't really experience the feature. There are only a few games that use it well, but just passing by someone and exchanging Mii and information is a great experience.

StreetPass was one of those features that got me excited when i purchased my 3ds in March of 2011. It was exciting getting my first streetpass and I even had 2 friends who bought one around the same time. However I have very bad lucky meeting new miis. Currently I have 17 miis in my plaza with 23 tags. Only five regions though all in the U.S. Military man so traveling was never a issue, but I cant seem to pick anyone up in the airports. Vegas was were i got the most tags at and that was around launch. Even got one in Iraq, but of course he was a soldier. I wish Nintendo fused streetpass with MiiVerse. Endless possibilities.

I finally got a StreetPass on someone's birthday.

Speaking of, is there much point to the non-attack magic in Find Mii? I know there's one, I think it was orange, that gives heroes an extra attack, but the other stuff doesn't seem to do anything.

The other ones are useful to clear status effects in rooms, like lighting up a dark room or getting rid of poisonous gas.

Green is good, it makes the enemies fall asleep (so they can't attack).

I like purple, it poisons enemies. It's great for an early attack because the effects last the whole battle.

Really, in Orlando?  I'd imagine tourists and their snotty teenagers would have been good for a few, at least.   Just went to Disneyland two weeks ago for the Christmas parade, got 15 streetpasses in 5 hours.   But then again, I went to Sea World the next weekend, and didn't get squat.

Ah, they're situational? I guess I just haven't come to such a room yet, although I am nearly through, looking at the map...

I forgot about the green magic, I used that once before. Though I think orange has better damage output if used of the first out of ten heroes.

I don't think I have ever gotten a purple shirt, through StreetPass or hired heroes.

What's annoying is you come to a dark room and you dont get a white shirt. If you dont get a lot of StreetPasses, then you can waste a lot of coins buying Miis and wasting the few StreetPasses you get.

This was posted on the NWR StreetPass NYC Facebook page and has better details about the Relay System:

"We are going to perform a system update that introduces a framework that uses these access points as StreetPass relay stations by this autumn.
This will involve taking a Nintendo 3DS system in Sleep Mode to an access point which will then connect automatically and send StreetPass data to a server. At the same time, the Nintendo 3DS system also receives the StreetPass data of another user from the server. In this setting, data is not exchanged directly, but rather through a StreetPass relay station. Hence, as opposed to, say, Person A and Person B directly exchanging game data, data will be transmitted in sequence from Person A to Person B, and then onto Person C and so on. "

I don't understand how StreetPass works.

Yesterday, I was carrying both my 3DS and my 3DSXL.  My 3DS got a Mii Plaza tag for someone called Rhe.  It showed she last played Animal Crossing.  My 3DSXL got a StreetPass from Rhe as well - but only in CrossworDS Plus.  Not in Mii Plaza, not in Animal Crossing.

Today, I had my 3DS, my 3DSXL and my friend's 3DS in my car.  We got a StreetPass from both a DRAKE BELL and a Kay - but only on Mii Plaza.

My 3DS got the following:
DRAKE BELL - Last Software: eShop
Kay - Last Software: eShop

My 3DS XL got:
DRAKE BELL - Last Software: eShop
Kay - Last Software: Mario Tennis

My friend's 3DS got:
DRAKE BELL - Last Software: Paper Mario
Kay - Last Software: eShop

Later in the day, I was carrying my 3DS and my 3DS XL.
Both systems got a Mii Plaza StreetPass from Riyo.
Only the 3DS got a Mii Plaza StreetPass from Crash.

All three Mii Plaza StreetPasses show Animal Crossing as the Last Played software - but no Animal Crossing StreetPasses.

Just so weird.

It is very strange how the Streetpass works. I'm going to turn it off in games like Mario 3D Land because I think it is 'stealing' Passes from the Mii Plaza.

There is one person who I always pass with at work and it almost always goes to 3D Land and not the Plaza.

That's because he's set up Street Pass in 3D Land, but didn't set his Mii info to be traded so he would likely be getting your Mii, but his data isn't being sent out to you.

But I did get his data once. How does that work?

On the plus side I've been getting a ton of Streetpasses. I'm at 52 different people just by carrying it around in my car  and at work. I take it on walks down the street all the time and get a few. Amazingly the most tend to come when I leave it in my car in the parking garage at my new primary job. Been there a month and a half and gotten over a dozen passes not including the ones where it was game specific only.

Walmarts and Frys have turned good results as well. Take it shopping with you too.

Plus my sister and I have left our systems sitting next to each other for a while and nothing happened for a few minutes. So, as it stands now, you have to play Find Mii and Puzzle Swap with Miis that visit your town before you can let in more Miis. Is that still true with the new games? That's one of the things holding me back from a purchase.

This is still the case, you can get Plaza Tickets that you can trade in for hats, which essentially kills Find Mii. If that is the only thing holding you back I suggest you try one or two out, they are worth it.

The hats in Find Mii/FM2 are different than the hats you get via Plaza Tickets.

You don't have to play any of the games to let more Miis in, you get a message saying there are new Miis at the gate, but if you greet them, you lose the ability to "play" with the previous Miis.

Note: There's still a limit of ten StreetPasses before you have to greet them to allow more to come to your gate.

As far as I understand it... yup.

Best thing to do, buy two more 3DS systems, set their Miis to the same shirt color.  You'll end up with a level 15 attack every eight hours, clears through Find Mii pretty quick. ;)

Do they have the same OCD?  If everyone (including you) switches to the same color (I suggest red, so if there's a shield of a particular color, you can use Team Magic on the fire attack), then each of them will get the two Level 7 Miis/Level 15 attack power every 8 hours.

It's happened to me twice. It's bullshit. I don't care that much for loosing Miis for Find Mii, but it's terrible loosing them for Puzzle Swap. I just started a few weeks ago taking my 3DS out with me (which means I have a lot to collect with not many streetpass tags for everytime I take it with me), and I've learned my lesson, but it's still bullshit.

Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: UncleBob on July 22, 2013, 10:31:53 PM
I have two friends that I've broken 99 with and a third system that's close.

I'd say a *lot* of people will benefit from the lifting of the 99 meeting cap - considering how many people I've met that are part of families or couples where multiple people have a 3DS in the same household.

Now, what the benefit of having passed someone more than 7 times is... well, meh.

UB, I know some people will do it. But do you seriously think more than a very tiny amount of people will have more than 99 encounters with someone else?
Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: UncleBob on July 23, 2013, 07:21:02 PM
Yes.

I think more than "a very tiny amount" of 3DS systems are contained within a household where there's more than one person who owns a 3DS.  Each one of those gets up to three passes each day.  One family that comes to my StreetPass meet-ups consists of a mother, father and three kids who all have a 3DS.

Kids and college students who go to classes with people could easily get a pass from the same person every school day.  There's 180-ish passes there.

I work with two people who carry their 3DS to work most every day and I'm sure many adults do carry their 3DS to work (and in the case of those in larger cities, on some form of Mass Transit).

I seriously think you are underestimating the amount of clustered 3DS systems.

But, as I said earlier, I'll just state that I disagree with your assertion.
Title: Re: Street Pass!
Post by: TJ Spyke on July 23, 2013, 07:22:20 PM

I have a 3DS that I take to work, I ride public transportation, I work in DC, and I don't think I've street passed with anyone more than 5 times. Maybe once school starts I will, but I run into a lot of traffic from Nationals games and get nothing.

I think "tiny" amount is accurate. The "very" might be a bit pessimistic though.

You're in Washington DC?  Well, there's your problem right there.   Didn't you watch House of Cards?   All the politicians are playing Pee Ess Veeta's all the time.

Need to go to a Women's Prison.  The guards there play 3DS.

It seems like 95% of the people I StreetPass with at Walmart have Animal Crossing: New Leaf as their last played game, guess that is good news for the game.

Yeah, that actually seems to be a good indicator, doesn't it?  I had, like, 15 animal crossing streetpasses during the 1st week, and I realized "Oh crap, I better go out and buy this game."   And hey, turns out they sold really well.   Same thing happened with Fire Emblem back in March.   I think I got at least 5 of those DAY OF release.

Has anyone had any success with StreetPass relay?

I updated my system and went to Nintendo Zone areas on Nintendo's list with my 3DS closed. I got nothing. Then I had my friend bring his 3DS to the two same zones I went to earlier and he got nothing, so the problem isn't that I was the first one to StreePass those relay stations...

What gives?

I didn't get anything when I went to McDonalds for dinner a few days ago and got nothing. Maybe I was the first one there, but still.

Apparently people found a way to abuse streetpass relay system by setting something in their wi-fi routers or something.

Will have look into this, but i think it requires hacking firmware or something. Not sure if i want to do this...

Considering that Unclebob has his own thread about it and they seem to have no issues with it, I can assure you it does not. :P

It does involve hacking the firmware of your router, but you don't have to do anything to your 3DS.

It also requires very specific models of routers, which mine is not included. Apparently you can use your Android phone as an alternative, so I may look into that.

Note, you'd have to have a rooted Android phone to do it.

There are also ways to make your computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) behave as the relay, provided it has a wireless adaptor and a wired internet connection. Most everything you need to know is collected in this Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AvvH5W4E2lIwdEFCUkxrM085ZGp0UkZlenp6SkJablE) (tutorial links at the bottom)..

So now that we are a good month into it, what is everyones'  experience with the relay stations? About a week after the update, it began to work for me and I was getting Street Passes almost every time I visited one of the 3 McDonalds in my town. I was purposely going inside just to get a Street Pass several times a week. Then after around 2 weeks, I quit getting Street Passes altogether. I then learned there were issues with the relay stations across the country and very few were working.

As of today, I've visited 5 relay stations multiple times in the past week or two and only one (one of the McDonalds) works. I continue to try the others but the green light just never lights up. Is this thing working for anyone else?

There's a McDonald's that I go by whenever I go to the gym (2-3 times a week). I've gotten a few streetpasses there in the past, but quite a few times in a row, I'd sit around in there for 5-10 minutes and get nothing.

Another McDonald's I occasionally go to I've gotten a streetpass everytime.

I don't know if Best Buy has a relay station or not, but I seem to get one there quite often.

I've gotten passes pretty consistently from a Barnes & Noble.

I've never gotten a streetpass from an AT&T store, even though both stores I've gone to are on Nintendo's relay list.

What dictates when you can send a personal message to a repeat street pass person? I used to be offered to write one every time but now it never does except for with my sister (who has the highest pass count on my system) . Did something about it change in the last update?

With the flood of StreetPasses I've received because of the Home Relay, I have noticed a pattern for this. It seems that you only get the offer for a personalized message (or rating) the second time you pass someone. Sometimes I don't get the option at all though, probably because of the other person disabling messages.

So, I've been away on a vacation for a bit. I was in Toronto and I must say, that place is awesome for streetpassing. I streetpassed people from the U.S. and Japan as well as other regions of Canada. The morning I left, I went on the subway in rush hour traffic about 8:30 - 9:00 am and got an easy 10 streetpasses. Just walking the streets and riding the subway while I was there during the weekend, I racked up 46 streetpasses. Made a huge dent in my puzzle piece collecting. I'm now over the 50% mark and got about 6-7 more accomplishments done on my 3DS. This is clearly a great feature for a large metro population. So much better than the 1 or 2 streetpasses I can get when going to the movie theater or walking through a mall. I even got a couple Rhythm Thief streetpasses! I never thought I'd get any of those. Boo-yah!

I guess I should start testing out these relay stations in my area though to see if I can find a way to improve my situation here in my hometown.

Awesome. I get 2 or 3 street passes on average to/from work. I don't get close enough to downtown, or at a good time to get more, but I'm content.

I went to a food court at a mall during the lunch hour. I got 1 streetpass which is about what I expected although sometimes I get none at all. I miss my high times of streetpassing already. I'm also in a tricky position. With this streetpass, I've now gotten four women in a row. If my next streetpass is also a woman, then that's another accomplishment done! If not, disaster as it is often more guys playing the 3DS. At least from my streetpass tags.

Khushrenada, go to a GameStop (or any place with a demo unit). Set it up so that its streepass plaza has a female mii in it, then turn on your wireless on your 3DS. Bam. 5th streetpass.

Interesting strategy. As it is, I went to the mall to see if I could spot any female playing a 3DS which has happened on occasion. No such luck so I took a chance and turned on the system and hoped for the best and I did it! I got a 5th female Mii. But there was no announcement of compleing the accomplishment. So I went back and read it. Turns out I have to get 5 in a row in one visit to the plaza gate not over time. All that work for nothing. Nintendo!!!!!!!!!!!

Use my trick at 5 GameStops.

(I don't have this accomplishment, either....)

Was listening to the 8-4 podcast today and heard the guys talking about a Streetpass maximum of 3000?  WTF?   I'm curious as to what happens exactly at 3000--  do get get to delete some older streetpasses, or does the green light just never come on?  And what about the streetpass games, especially the ones that I actually paid for (Warriors Way, Mii Force)?

I'm not anywhere near 3000 yet--  I've only got about 600 streetpasses.  But I've noticed the streetpasses becoming more and more frequent lately, most likely as sales are going up.   I'd guess at this rate, and if I'm vigilant about clearing them out frequently, I may reach 3000 in a couple years.

I always figured that the oldest and least repeated pass Miss would be automatically cleared out. I have a ton of single pass ones I wouldn't worry about losing. It's the ones I have repeated with that matter to me.

Was it just my imagination, or did Nintendo promise (during the last Nintendo Direct) that StreetPass Relay Stations would now give the last 6 streetpasses?

I haven't experienced this yet. Has anyone else?

That explains it.

I got my fake 3DS Relay Station up and running with a script that switches out the connection every couple of minutes.  It was giving me 6 passes on every hit, so I wondered what was up with that.
