RFN: Doin' It Live... for the Kids!

by James Jones, Greg Leahy, Jon Lindemann, and Jonathan Metts - December 2, 2010, 9:04 pm EST
Total comments: 104

We're doing the podcast LIVE, all day long, to raise money for Child's Play. Content schedule added!

It's over! Thank you so much for helping us raise over $2000 for Child's Play. Our donation link will be up for a little while yet, so you still have a chance to contribute to this great cause. The recording is now available for download: part one, part two and part three.

Join us in the chat room while we're on air. Schedule is below the chat box. Having trouble? You can also connect with a dedicated IRC client. Server: irc.browsingtheinternet.com Channel: #nwr

JIGGAWHAT: An epic, unprecedented Nintendo/gaming-themed live audio "podcast" telethon

JIGGAWHY: To support Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and games to sick kids

JIGGAWHO: Radio Free Nintendo crew, Nintendo World Report staff, special guests, and you!

JIGGAWHEN: Saturday, December 4, 12:00pm (Noon) Eastern until...?

JIGGAWHERE: Right here! Check back for the audio stream, live chat, and donation link.

JIGGAHOW: Magic of the Internet

Here at Nintendo World Report, we've long been supporters of Child's Play, the fantastic charity that provides toys and games to hospitalized kids. If you're not familiar with Child's Play, check out the official website and listen to Jonny's RFN Special interview with Mike Krahulik, co-founder of the charity (and Penny Arcade), way back in 2007. So, when our old friend Karl Castaneda brought us an idea for doing a special, live-streaming version of RFN to support Child's Play, we got excited. Not only can we do things live that don't make sense in the recorded version, like real-time listener interaction, but the lack of editing means there are fewer constraints on how long the show can run. Then we thought... why not do it telethon-style, all day long? With a respectful nod to Desert Bus for Hope, we present RFN: Doin' It Live... for the Kids!

***If you are new to RFN, please be advised that the show contains explicit language. We're doin' it for the kids, but the show itself is for grown-ups.***

Be there, folks!

FZeroBoyoNovember 15, 2010

Sounds awesome. Can't wait.  :D

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterNovember 15, 2010

I'm definitely there!

Since this is for Child's Play, donations are tax deductible, yes? (Looking at Desert Bus posts from last year, this seems to be the case....

GearBoxClockNovember 15, 2010

I donated five dollars and I feel fine!
Can't wait to see how long this lasts. Hopefully it'll won't run out of steam after an hour.

Yes, donations should be tax-deductible, but you'll have to poke around ChipIn and/or PayPal to get a receipt that could be used when filing your taxes.

StrikerObiMike Sklens, Podcast EditorNovember 16, 2010

I am going to donate you guys into podcasting oblivion, just as soon as I get paid. Deal with it.

I'll chip in what I can, but it won't be much because of certain things going down in my life.

Every donation counts. Even a very small amount gets us closer to our goal and are absolutely appreciated!

My understanding is that a receipt is not adequate any more, and that correspondance from the charity is necessary to substantiate a claim. I imagine Child's Play is capable of and prepared to assist, though :)

From CP's website:

Q. Since this is a charity donation I can deduct it from my taxes, right?

A. Each hospital’s charity tax ID number is included in the information section on its wish list. Use your confirmation email as a receipt. If you are making a cash donation, Child’s Play’s own tax ID number is 20-3584556. If you have any questions about how this works, please ask your tax advisor.

apdudeNovember 19, 2010

I'm no tax professional, but having donated to many different causes over the years I find the tax implicatins of these donations are negligible especially if you don't have a mortgage or are not donating over $5000 since you'll likely take the standard deduction anyway.  So don't let that stop you from donating to a good cause.

vuduNovember 21, 2010

I'm definitely there!

I probably won't be.  :(

Are you guys planning to record the episode?  It would be nice even if you just threw the whole thing up on your feed for posterity's sake.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorNovember 21, 2010

Yeah, vudu, we're going to be taking precautions to make sure we've got a recorded version for those of you who can't make it. It's going to be ripped from the stream, so it won't be up to the usual production standards that RFN's established, but it'll still be available.

Can't make any promises on when it'll be on the feed, but it will be, eventually.

kraken613November 22, 2010

Glad to hear it will end up on the feed. I will probably not get to listen to much unless my schedule changes.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorNovember 22, 2010

For those of you who can, you should absolutely try and listen to the live feed. We're going to take recording breaks every 45 minutes or so to save what we've got already, so while you won't miss any planned content, you never know what kind of hiijinks we'll be up to in the interim.

Not only that, but being there live lets you participate as the show's in progress. If somebody says something you disagree with, you can complain and pester them in real time.

I'm looking forward to the real-time pestering; I mock Lindemann all the time but I have to do it within the restrictions of Twitter.

Olimar77November 22, 2010

I'm in school to become an adult/geriatric nurse practitioner, but did a pediatric rotation as an undergraduate at a children's hospital here in Atlanta. I took care of an 8-year-old boy who had both kidneys removed and received dialysis each day. He thought I was the best nurse ever because I brought the Wii console into his room and taught him how to play Super Mario Galaxy. Many of these children spend months in the hospital, and play is a great diversionary tactic that also helps normalize their experience.

This.

I've seen people bash and criticize Child's Play because all they do is bring toys and games to kids. In a way, they are saying that this is a pointless charity because parents can bring their toys and that it doesn't exactly help the kids cope with their situation... That's bullcrap.

First, not every hospital has a game room for the kids to play in. Second, the families of these kids are spending a lot of money on the treatment. Third, hospitals will not always offer the services of entertainment. Finally, it's been proven that when a kid (or an adult) is distracted their spirits lift up and the treatment works better.

I remember when I was a kid I was sent to the hospital with some sort of cold (I don't remember why exactly, I have to ask my mother later). The hospital not only has cable with a lot of kids channels they had a great playroom that my parents would take me to and I would play there for hours. On top of this my mother made these plush bunnies that kept me company throughout the treatment. I was so happy that I didn't even realize I was under treatment.

Nowadays, you are lucky to find a working TV in some hospitals! So this sort of thing is important to keep their spirits up and prove that we are more than just a bunch of jackasses.

Back when I got IV's as a kid, the hospital used to have an NES in the pediatrics...ward? Anyway, I played the hell out of Milon's Secret Castle, Zelda II, and Star Fox on their SNES. Such good times. Made the whole experience much more tolerable. I absolutely support Child's Play, and if anyone complains about it, they're doing so because they're idiots or they're heartless bastards.

AVNovember 29, 2010

I doubt I will be able to listen, but I'll chip in Friday morning.

Simon1321November 30, 2010

I would just like to say as a child brain cancer surviver a charity like this is a god send to children. At age eight I was diagnosed with cancer and one of the only thing to keep my mind off the pain, and reality of what was actually going on, video games really did help. in and out of hospitals for years the only thing that kept my mind sane was going on a zelda adventure or helping mario save the princess from bowser. Please do what you can to help it really is amazing what a simple game can do for a child in any long term medical situation, I know they will have my support ;D

ToruresuNovember 30, 2010

I'll be there guys! Great idea!

tyrian3December 01, 2010

I don't know if I'll be there, probably since it'll be around 18 CET (late saturday afternoon...I should be free :P) anyway if I won't be able to be there live I hope I'll get the recording later. Of course I've already donated, just five bucks (or 3,95€ lol) but I don't have a job so I really have to be careful with money. But hey, it's for the kids :)
Go go RFN!

Scatt-ManDecember 02, 2010

Having trouble donating *has a cry about it.* Seeing as I live in Australia, I'm thinking that maybe something gets buggered up when inserting my credit card details. Yes, yes, 'good cause' and all of that, but I doubt I'd be around to listen to this beast live, so I'm hoping to download it later. Phone number mayhaps not being a U.S. one? I 'unno... I'll try again soon.  :'( $10US Comin' your way soon, guise. *hugs* Zomg, exchange rates mean that's totally $10AU now!! And we still get charged $120 for teh new x-bocks games... I remember when my dad bought Super Castlevania 4 for $140 back in the day. Oh, and Street Fighter 2 was like $180 or somethin'... I DIGRESS, RITE?!

Also, CRAAAAIGWAY! Lots of love to the Craigmeister. He totally read out my question on their IGN Haiti charity thing. "Where are you guise recording from? IT DUN' LOOK LIKE TEH PODCAST ROOM!!1." And even though it's a long-shot that anything I write here will get mentioned on the 'cast, I'll give it a shot. Tell Craigzy that Snake Rattle 'n Roll on the NES is totally tits-awesome. Grew up on it 'n memories 'n stuff. Cheers.  :Q

MoRZDecember 02, 2010

You should put up a world clock in here so that anyone knows exactly when the show starts for them.

Houston, we have a GAF thread.

Hopefully this'll boost the numbers before Saturday.

FZeroBoyoDecember 02, 2010

Nice to see that 10 percent of the goal has been met. And the show is still two days away. I'm insanely excited for it!  ;D

ShyGuyDecember 02, 2010

Tell Craig Harris he looks like the bald version of the host of Destination Truth on Syfy.

Craig is gonna be on and yet I saw no one posted about the telethon on IGN's Wii Lobby. Well, that's been corrected.  :D

PabloYDecember 02, 2010

Done. It's not much but I hope it helps. I won't be able to listen live, bu i'll definetly listen to the whole thing in the recorded format. Good luck with the goal!

broodwarsDecember 02, 2010

I have also made a small donation now.  I don't know if I'll be able to listen to the Live Show, but I definitely want the recording (I put my Forum name on one of the comments with NintendoWorldReport's Live Show mentioned).

The widget on our blog doesn't seem to be updating (I'll check with Aaron to see if we can fix it), so here's a current report on donations.

As of 6:00pm Eastern on Thursday, we have raised a total of $628.50 from 32 individual donors! This is a great start with about 40 hours left to go before the event even begins, so thank you to everyone who has already donated! I will be updating this blog tonight with a lot more details on our content schedule and fundraising goals for each hour.

There's no problem on our side (the widget is a Flash app hosted by Chipin).  And it's updating fine for me anyhow.
EDIT: Actually, Chrome seems to keep it in cache... you'll have to clear your cache for it to update on that browser... there doesn't seem to be any way around it, unfortunately.

wickDecember 03, 2010

I doubt I'll be able (sober enough) to listen seeing as it will be 4am over here in the land of Aus, but I've still given a small donation, as it's a good cause.

Have fun guys. Hopefully I'll be able to listen to a replay somehow.

Killer_Man_JaroTom Malina, Associate Editor (Europe)December 03, 2010

Definitely liking that schedule of events. Seriously, what you're doing here is wonderful, and I really hope I can muster the energy to stick around for at least the majority of the event. Whatever happens, good luck tomorrow.

EDIT: I put in $10. It would be amazing if you made it to the $10,000 goal.

Retro DeckadesDecember 03, 2010

Just chipped in what little dough I could. I like the look of that content line-up, and hope I can listen to the majority of the show.

AVDecember 03, 2010

I donated  :D

SundoulosDecember 03, 2010

It looks like I may be working in the office alone on Saturday.  I'm a little happy about that b/c perhaps I'll be able to listen to this in the background.  I've contributed and may give a little more on the day of the show.

Good luck, folks!  The schedule looks good so far.

LittleIrvesDecember 03, 2010

I'm chipping in the last $12.50 needed to get to $750...  that's awesome you snagged Craig Harris.  Wish I could listen live, but have some out-of-town guests who probably wouldn't be as excited to listen to Nintendo chatter all day, so I'm hoping there's some kind of recording available for donators? Is that a word?
(...craigway.)
Have an amazing show.

LittleIrvesDecember 03, 2010

DONOR!  Right.  Anyway.  If you'll excuse me, I'm off to try and find a used copy of Cubivore...

King of TwitchDecember 03, 2010

Hope to be in the chat for some of it. Have you thought about putting it up on a P2P to cut down on bandwidth?

Bandwidth for the recording may not end up being a problem after all... we'll see how big the file turns out and double-check our hosting plan limits. I am told that we're far less constrained on bandwidth than used to be the case, since we changed hosts last year.

Hey wick and anyone else far afield of the U.S. -- one of the good things about doing such a long event is that it will span several hours and may be accessible to more time zones that way. If it kicks off at 4am for you, it could run until 4pm -- so maybe you can catch it somewhere in the middle!

By the way, PayPal will convert your local currency into US dollars, so hopefully everyone will have access to the donation process.

ALSO, I am fairly certain that PayPal does work with debit cards. It definitely works with credit cards, checking accounts, and any existing PayPal funds that you might have from selling on eBay, etc.

Kytim89December 03, 2010

I just contributed ten dollars. How will the people who donate be able to listen to tne podcast? Will you send it to us via email or download?

We'll have information about the recording after this weekend. Through ChipIn, I have email addresses for every donor, so we can contact you directly if needed.

wickDecember 03, 2010

Yeah I'm hoping to get up early to catch some of it. It just depends on how the hangover treats me  :)

deadeyesDecember 03, 2010

I've already made my donation.
From the looks of it, the programming schedule is definitely one for Nintendophiles. Can't wait!

SeacorDecember 03, 2010

Why not just cut the final recording down into multiple 2 hour episodes and upload them to iTunes (Doin' It Live part 1 of 6, 2 of 6, etc)?  It would be no different than 6 RFN podcasts.  The show would then be available to everyone regardless if they donated or not.

By making the podcast(s) only available to donors defeats the point of doing this special show.  I am sure future listeners may end up donating to child's play after the fact as they learn about it on the podcast.  You also lose the potential of drawing in more NWR website traffic and new members.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorDecember 03, 2010

Seacor, the point of recording the show isn't to withhold it from and punish non-donors - it's to reward those who do donate with a version to keep. The original plan was to just stream all of this live and not record it at all - the idea to send an MP3 version out as a way of giving thanks wasn't brought up until later.

We are exploring options for sending the recording to everyone, so don't get too upset about it just yet. Also, please remember that we aren't sure if the recording will even work or sound decent at all. We've done tests but it's different when you have so much going on for such a long time.

fordrobDecember 04, 2010

I will enjoy cutting down this year's Christmas tree with the family while lamenting my inability to participate tomorrow; family responsibilities first - self-indulgence later...really hoping that recording will work out and be available to those who donate.  Thanks to the crew who are in it for the long-haul...break a leg!

Jet PilotDecember 04, 2010

I was hoping to load up the live stream on my iPhone browser, but apparently the flash "play button" to start the live stream isn't supported by the iPhone (at least it doesn't show up in the Safari browser...just a big blank white space below the RFN icon).  :(

Anyone have any idea how to stream this via my iPhone.  I can't sit by my computer for hours on end tomorrow but I want to catch the show.

*EDIT* I was just checking out more on Skyfire and it appears it only supports Flash VIDEOS.  Flash apps and games are not supported.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorDecember 04, 2010

Jet Pilot, you can always throw the MP3 link into your browser - it'll stream via the Quicktime player in Safari.

You can also play the stream URL in iTunes, WinAmp, Windows Media Player, and just about any other audio program on any platform, including smart phones.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorDecember 04, 2010

I feel a bit bad that I've put all my effort into CAG's Child's Play fundraiser this year (because, of course, I wasn't much expecting NWR to do anything and CAG does something every year).  I've been putting some effort into CAG's that I could have put into NWR's to make it better. :(

It's not much, but I'd like to throw in a few prizes - who's in charge of the prize list so I can PM you?

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorDecember 04, 2010

Get in touch with Jonny ASAP, Bob. And you should email him instead of PM.

Scatt-ManDecember 04, 2010

Donation complete! SUCCESS!!1

Yar, I'm sure the majority of people donating realise that regardless of previous commitments, they'd probably miss out on the majority of the awesomeness, thus would like that security and comfort of...etc.. You get my point. Not only that, but Greg's voice puts me to sleep. SO SOOTHING, ZOMG!

*Aus listener #19 looks at time zones*
...Wait, it's in 6 hours?! Blarg...4:00am start.

*EDIT*

Also, many thanks to UncleBob.  :D

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorDecember 04, 2010

e-mail'd Jonny.  Sent it to his @NWR e-mail, that's all I've got.

Jet PilotDecember 04, 2010

CaptainK.923December 04, 2010

I can't seem to make a donation on PayPal. I'm not going to be around all day and I want to be able to download the podcast. Any thoughts?

Our donation box will remain open through Monday. Even though the live show is over now, we would still greatly appreciate your donation, and we'll be happy to help you donate to Child's Play even after that because it's a great charity.

As for the recording, Karl thinks it worked beautifully and will probably slice it into three 2-hour chunks. We're double-checking the bandwidth issue but hope to be able to provide it to everyone on the podcast feed.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorDecember 04, 2010

Dangit.  I missed every bit of this.  Was really hoping to get home from work in time to catch some. :(

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterDecember 04, 2010

This was a really fun broadcast. Despite not lasting into the evening everything went very smoothly!

yoshi1001December 04, 2010

Great job guys. You should consider doing this quarterly or semi-annually, maybe choosing a different charity each time.

Chad SexingtonDecember 05, 2010

Errr.... oops.

I missed it and I was home all day (doing other things), but still...

DropkikDecember 05, 2010

Awesome show guys, and I just want to say that it was awesome be be able to call into my favorite show (even if it was to answer a trivia question about cho aniki) and win some swag.  My birthday is December 8th, so to be part of this show just made my week a lot better.  Hopefully you guys can make this an annual event!

"And that's how this yearly custom because an annual tradition."

TurdFurgyDecember 05, 2010

poo, I missed it too. And I also was home all day

Ah wish I hadnt been busy...

Hope im able to download the recorded version if all went well.

SundoulosDecember 05, 2010

I hope that you guys will try again in the future.  I would have loved to have been able to donate more, but I just wasn't able to at this time.  If you think that you'll do one again, I'll be sure to start storing away money for a future donation.

Scatt-ManDecember 05, 2010

Apologies for the Babbage's comment when Craig was on. T'was just a running joke, and I sincerely hope I didn't annoy him too much. I donated an extra $5 for the consideration. Cheers guys, and a job well done. Certainly looking forward to listening to the rest of it soon.

gojiraDecember 05, 2010

Unfortunately I missed the show due to work.  But I did get a contribution in the day before.  ;)  Hopefully the recording works out because it sounds like it was a great show!

GearBoxClockDecember 05, 2010

Ffffffffffff I thought it was the 15!
At least I made a donations though

I live in Japan and started listening to the podcast at 1 AM and continued until I fell asleep sometime around 6 or 7. You guys put on a hell of a good show! Seriously, this was something I was looking forward to for weeks. Staying up late, listening to some knowledgeable guys talk about games, pure awesome. And doing this for Child's Play made it even better. I had no idea about the charity before now, but I can say that this is something that I'll be donating to periodically.

Anyway, great show guys, and I hope you do something similar in the future.

broodwarsDecember 06, 2010

How about actual download links for those that donated?  I don't use iTunes or the RSS, so I don't have access to it.  I just download the .mp3s.

tyrian3December 06, 2010

If it's on iTunes and the RSS feed everyone can download that.
the crew has been so kind to make it available to everyone! Thanks guys, and thanks Karl for the editing!

I'm listening to it and holy shoot I sounded terrible! I was so excited I spoke a terrible English, I'm sorry everyone  :'(
Also, I'm sorry skype problems didn't let my "real Italian voice" trough, it was, as you might've thought, a Mario impression  ;)
I noticed later that people in the IRC were anticipating that, too bad because without knowing it I would've given the fans just what they wanted lol

it's great to see the donation coming even now that the show is over. 2215$ reached, yay!

on a side note, here's what you missed in the last part of my call...I hope it'll be as fun for you to listen as it was for me to do :)

Great job gang!  That's a pretty good amount to have raised for our little site.  I'm sorry I wasn't able to give much... This was unexpected and I've been pouring so much effort into helping an alternative site's fundraiser.  Give me a head's up if you're planning on doing this next year so that I can split some of my efforts between you two. :D

Ha ha, not bad Luca! It's too bad that bit got cut from the show but oh well :) Always good to have more European representatives on the podcast! Also thanks to Karl for posting, I missed the whole thing on the day unfortunately so this is my chance to experience the experience! I'm impressed at how good it sounds, and the lack of editing doesn't make it any less entertaining - cross talk for example is infrequent and doesn't interfere.

Great show, guys. The part that I was able to catch on Saturday was terrific, and I am looking forward to the upcoming feeds.

I have a question and possible suggestion about the timing of the broadcast. People are very charitable around the holidays, but many of them (me included) can be kinda broke during that period, too. Do you think that moving the live show to another time of the year would be beneficial?

That bit got cut by damn skype and its techical problems, I had a couple of those during my call sadly. One time when I was saying that I remember a time before and after episode 103, the other when saying "I listen to radio free nintendo, baby!" (I hope nobody thought I was saying "b*tch" LOL) and unfortunately at the end. I dunno if Jhonny hear it, because he was laughing.
Thank you mate! I agree it's always good for us Europeans to have a good representative in RFN and it has been great for me to appear on the show, even if it was just a one-time thing. Anyway as long as Greg stays awesome we're more than good :)

Not to be rude, but isn't this one of those questions that answers themselves?

This is Kytim we're talking about, the master of redundancy.  ;)

I meant the podcast.

Subscribers to the feeds always get the episodes first. If you have checked the feed and don't see a new episode, it isn't up yet.

I know, Kytim.  I was hinting that, as Jonny noted, your feed would have grabbed it if it was out.

Is the NWR donation box still taking donations or is that part over?

AVDecember 11, 2010

I loved the show. I hope this is a yearly endeavor and I'm sad that I could not call in. I really enjoyed the interview with Craig and the overall raw feeling of the podcast

You know, I just tried to download part 1 and 2 of this podcast directly to my iPhone, but I got a message saying, "RFN Doin' it Live...For the kids! Part 1/2" cannot be played on this iPhone. Incidentally, the third part and the latest podcast downloaded without a hitch. Was anyone else having any problems? It's not that big of a deal, as I can just download the first two parts to my computer and put them on my phone later. Just thought I would mention it.

I believe I've gotten a similar message before when trying to download a podcast episode directly from my iPod Touch when I don't have enough free space. The third segment is shorter than the first to (I think), so that could explain it.

Well, After getting that message, I did download part 3 and the latest podcast with no messages. I'll try to clear some space up, too, to see if that'll help. Thanks for the quick response!
