Welcome to the New Nintendo World Report!

The best Nintendo site on the web just got better.

With E3 2010 out of the way, we figured it was time to move on to bigger and better things. What better way to do that than give the site a whole new look? But it's more than just a fresh coat of paint; we've got new features galore, and we plan on rolling out more cool functionality in the weeks and months to come. The NWR crew has put a ton of thought and work into this transformation, and we all need to give the driving forces behind the project a big round of applause:

  • Aaron Kaluszka - Coding, Database, Concept
  • Ryan Jones - Layout, Graphics
  • Billy Berghammer – Spiritual Advisor
  • NWR Staff – Testing, Suggestions, Feedback

We also have to give a special shout-out to former NWR Director Steven Rodriguez, who collaborated with Aaron and Ryan on the original redesign many moons ago. We couldn't have done it without his input!

Bringing NWR 2.0 to life has been a long haul, but in the end we feel it was worth it. I'm sure you'll agree. We've taken in a lot of reader feedback during the design process (thank you!), and we'll be incorporating even more requested features into the site design going forward. For now, here's the stuff that's going to benefit you:

  • Reformatted front page with content sidebars
  • News now presented in a more blog-style visual format
  • Talkback comment threads now displayed underneath news articles on main site
  • Staff Twitter feeds in right sidebar
  • Integrated site and forum login
  • Press Releases now posted in separate sidebar as a news "ticker"
  • Rumors and Editorials merged into the News and Blogs section
  • Enhanced Release Date listings

And here's the stuff that's going to benefit us (which, in turn, ultimately benefits you):

  • Ability to tag both articles and blogs with multiple tags
  • Images can be added to news stories more easily
  • New staff profile design

The impact of these enhancements is twofold. Firstly, we'll be able to provide you content in a more compact fashion. Secondly, many of these enhancements will streamline our process of providing you content, while allowing us to present that content in a more attractive manner.

Another significant upgrade is our revised review format. We've made some tweaks that we feel are for the better; be sure to let us know what you think about these changes and others we're making in the reviews arena.

While all of these changes are exciting, what's even more promising is what we have on the horizon. We have big plans for NWR, and intend to push the envelope in order to make this website all that you know it can be. I won't spoil the surprises right now, but there's a predominant theme amongst them: YOU. Many of the changes we'll be making enhance our user community, our interaction with that community, and the community's interaction with each other.

Of course, we'll be relying on you for help! You'll not only eventually be providing content for the rest of the community to share, but you'll also be looking at upcoming features and telling us what works, what doesn't, and what else you'd like to see. As I've said before, NWR is as much your site as it is ours.

Check out the new layout, let us know what you think, and thanks for stopping by! We appreciate each and every one of our readers, past, present, and future.

Enjoy!

P.S. If you happen to find any bugs (*cough*), please report them to bugs@nintendoworldreport.com. Thanks!

Me likey!

BlackNMild2k1June 27, 2010

Does this mean we can submit news without having to enter all our info everytime?

p.s. I love the "pick all the cat pics" human check at the submit news link.

kraken613June 27, 2010

For some reason the site is not rendering correctly for me. Or I hope it isn't, it is just a long line of stories and information.

vuduJune 27, 2010

Did you test it using AdBlock?  Because the design isn't working right for me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/kingvudu/NWR2point0.jpg

Yes.  It works fine here using the default Easylist.  If you can tell me which rules are getting triggered, I can take a look.
I'm actively working to squash other bugs though.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorJune 27, 2010

It all looked normal for me with:
FireFox +AdBlock
Chrome
Opera
Safari

And normal-ish with Lynx (I mean, as normal as it gets).

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusJune 27, 2010

Woo, NWR 2.0! Glad to see it finally up and running. Congrats on getting it up!

Does the forum get a 2.0 update too?

In the E3 awards link is there supposed to be only one page?
and all the game links in that story kick you back out to the front page.

It already did :-p

No, I'm working on that now.  Please start posting bugs here: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=31799.0

happyastoriaJune 27, 2010

I love it!

I'm guessing this was the reason why the site was down for a bit?

kraken613June 27, 2010

It seems to be working now!

Nice! Talkback in the stories now! Looks great guys!

Guitar SmasherJune 27, 2010

It looks like a mess.  For reference, I'm using Firefox with adblocker.  I see what Vudu posted, but with the small snapshots overlapping the headlines.

Talkback in the stories will be nice, once things are organized.

EDIT: It's showing up properly now, after a few refreshes.

rbtrJune 27, 2010

So nice!  It's all displaying properly for me, using firefox.

BlackNMild2k1June 27, 2010

It shows fine for me with
Firefox + AdBlock
Chrome + AdBlock

Chrome I had to refresh a few times, but it eventually loaded correctly and has ever since.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusJune 27, 2010

Ahh NWR 2.0, it's good to see that it's finally up. :)

BeautifulShyJune 27, 2010

I don't see vudus picture with the new format but I see it on the forums.
Using Internet Channel.

PlugabugzJune 27, 2010

I like this!

Is there a way to hide comments on the homepage?

King of TwitchJune 27, 2010

I said wow!

DAaaMan64June 27, 2010

Hey it looks pretty good!

SarailJune 27, 2010

Excellent design, guys! Love the way it looks in Safari on my Mac! Great job!

randomflashbangJune 27, 2010

It doesn't seem to load well on Chrome at all unfortunately. Firefox is beautiful though.

ThePermJune 27, 2010

looks much better on this computer

If you're having problems, then it is probably with some sort of extension -- the site looks nearly identical in all browsers.  But I can't help if you don't tell me what's actually getting blocked (I know at least Adblock will tell you if you click its button).

Mop it upJune 27, 2010

It didn't load up properly when I first visited, but after I logged in, it started working fine. Looking good, I'll have to poke around it a bit.

Might clearing out the cookies help with those with display issues?

Shouldn't matter, but it could be that some old CSS was cached or something... that would explain the layout problems.

By the way, we are still finding a lot of small bugs, and Aaron will be working throughout today to address these. He's already had a long day and it's not over yet! Wish him luck!

Wow, it looks especially awesome on my iPad.

NeoStar9XJune 27, 2010

New site looks great.

StratosJune 27, 2010

I like having the comments right there. Maybe we can get more vict-I mean readers posting on the boards.

SeacorJune 27, 2010

I like the new look.  Nice job to all involved.

nhainesJune 27, 2010

This looks really, really incredible.  This is already my favorite site because it's the most honest and personal, but it's exciting to see a new look as well.  Thanks so much for all your hard work!  ;D

I'd like to add my comments to the chorus of praise.  This is a fantastic redesign, and the tech staff at NWR has really outdone themselves.

BnM - A forum redesign is "on the roadmap".  I know that's kind of a B.S. answer but trust me, we know that the forums don't really match the site at the moment. We want to get the site proper squared away, but now that the redesign is live we can start looking at things like that.

I'd like to extend my thanks to everybody involved, especially Aaron and Ryan Jones.  They did a kick ass job with the site, and this is a huge milestone for NWR.  I hope everybody enjoys it, and bears with us while we work out the kinks.

BlackNMild2k1June 27, 2010

Either way I really like the whole new NWR 2.0 look. I would love to see what you have planned as far as a forum redesign that matches the front page.
Would that even be possible?

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterJune 27, 2010

I love this new look! And please consider what BlackN says above!

TJ SpykeJune 27, 2010

It's nice, but I have to admit I loved the old look and was really used to it.

CalibanJune 27, 2010

I like the new Nintendo World Report.

YankeeJune 27, 2010

The redesign is awesome! You guys have really done a great job.

Lookin' sexy. Great job, Aaron!

The redesign is fantastic, but I have one criticism. The items in the Previews and Impressions section should indicate which of the two each one is. I'm usually much more interested in impressions than I am in previews, and it would help me out to know which is which. As it is, I'd probably just stick with the Talkback section of the forums, which does make this clear, but I'd rather be able to do it in this great new interface.

They're labeled separately everywhere but the main page listing, but we'll think about it.

It seems like it would be simple enough to add it to the thing that shows up when you put your mouse over one of them.

TurdFurgyJune 28, 2010

ghaaaa! Me hate change!!! but yeah looks good guys, great job.

LouieturkeyJune 28, 2010

I'm liking this.  Hopefully it'll lead to bigger and better things.

RABicleJune 28, 2010

While I love the Web 2.0 ness have you uh, have you seen what the layout fucking looks like in Safari? I think you need to get back to suing some W3C standard markup language.

Seriously right now it's fucked.
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendoworldreport.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

EDIT: Wtf! Suddenly it looks fine!

Fix those errors though!

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusJune 28, 2010

I am not completely sold on this myself. It's a bit too "dense" for my liking.

It's alright though, since I get the headlines primary through RSS.

The front page login is good stuff.

edit - Oh, one more thing, good work replacing that flash based headline banner.

ejamerJune 28, 2010

Front page doesn't work very well using Chrome with a non-widescreen monitor.  You can't read half of the article titles because they are covered by images.  I suspect that having a widescreen monitor would fix the problem but have no way to test and am not upgrading in the short term.

I like the idea, but the execution might still need some tweaking.  ;D

The front page should be fine for 1024 and above, which is not widescreen.  We found that only about 2% of non-phone visitors have a lower resolution than that.

greybrickNathan Mustafa, Staff AlumnusJune 28, 2010

I like this redesign!

greybrickNathan Mustafa, Staff AlumnusJune 28, 2010

but I cannot edit my posts from the talkback link? Also, I don't have a flashy blue header for my name  :P:

RizeDavid Trammell, Staff AlumnusJune 28, 2010

I didn't like the previous site initially, but it grew on me.  This looks every better.  Looks incredible actually.  Congratulations.

New site is awesome. Excited to see talkback on the news pages!

Ian SaneJune 28, 2010

First article I clicked on froze my browser.  Not exactly a great first impression. ;)

I thought the old design was fine.  I get so used to certain sites that I tend to know them by feel so if you so much as move a link I'll click the wrong spot almost every time.  So it will take me a while to get used to this.  By then I'll probably like it fine.

Fatty The HuttJune 28, 2010

UltimatePartyBearJune 28, 2010

Congratulations and nice work!  This is a huge improvement visually and a very nice step forward.

My one complaint is the silly blur effect when you mouse over the top links.  It has never made sense to me to blur what you're looking at.  If you're really in love with the effect, I suggest blurring the other items instead.  Alternatively, blurring the image would make overlay text easier to read, so it would actually serve a purpose if a blurb appeared, too.  That said, I think if you were to do that, it would look better to blur the entire group of images and use all that space for the blurb.

ejamerJune 28, 2010

"The front page should be fine for 1024 and above, which is not widescreen.  We found that only about 2% of non-phone visitors have a lower resolution than that."

Hmm... I'm at 1024 resolution with a 4:3 screen and it's definitely not fine.  Actually, let me add a quick note: for Chrome on Windows XP it's no good.  For the same browser and resolution on Windows 7 it's fine, and the page looks great.

If it's just 2% then don't worry about it... but until I get a new monitor or start using the newer PC for casual stuff like web browsing, any interest in visiting the site "as is" will be shot.  I'm only a casual visitor anyway so it's not a big loss.

Two final comments:
(1) not a fan of the blur effect either, especially because it sometimes isn't removed correctly when the cursor is moved quickly across the screen.  After bringing the cursor back over the blurred picture, it resets and works correctly.  Is that just me, or do others have the same experience?
(2) what a great group photo for the E3 2010 Awards article!  Looks like you guys had a fun time.

Are you sure your zoom settings are normal?  OS should not have any bearing.

The iPad is 1024 pixels wide, and the site looks perfect on it, like it was designed just for it.

ive been using chrome and all the pictures were overlaying on the text, since it didn't go away I thought I'd try it out with firefox and things look just fine. by the way i'm running Debian Lenny :-D

"Are you sure your zoom settings are normal?  OS should not have any bearing."

Pretty sure the zoom settings are normal, but will confirm that (and browse through other settings to see if there is something amiss) after work tonight.

I'll delete any "First!" posts. Continued "Firstage" will meet with stiffer discipline...like violence.

Also known as Fist Post.

xcwarriorJune 30, 2010

The site looks a lot better. Nice job on the changes

ejamerJuly 01, 2010

Quick note: I didn't (intentionally) change any settings, but the page is displaying correctly now in my browser.  The image blur effect is still getting "stuck" sometimes when the cursor moves quickly across the images at the top of the page, but that's only a minor annoyance.

TheFleeceJuly 02, 2010

I really like the improvements on the site. The reorganization feels nice and even the color scheme is tight. Nice job!
