He still can't boss me around.

Jon Lindemann has major New Business this week -- he's now in charge of NWR! He's also been playing Mario Kart Wii lately, which leads us into a brief conversation about the recent NPD numbers and a debate over whether Wii Play is a "real game". Also in New Business: more DQ Swords talk, and an overview of Salamander from the Japanese Virtual Console.

After the usual smattering of DLC Mondays and your Listener Mail, we jump into the first on-air RetroActive discussion. Our reactions to Dynamite Headdy vary quite a bit, but we all pay respects to its technical prowess and creativity. We also read some of your comments from the forums -- thanks to everyone who participated! You can vote to choose the next RetroActive game in this poll thread until Monday, Feb. 2.

Talkback

I'm curious whether anyone pays attention to the episode titles, as I usually put a lot of thought into them.  "Puppet Show... and RFN" is a reference to both Dynamite Headdy and Spinal Tap.

I just finished listening! Another great show as always!

Great new segment!

SchadenfreudeJanuary 31, 2009

For some reason the RSS feed doesn't link me to the article for the episode, but the recent news page instead.

Oh well, will listen.

SchadenfreudeJanuary 31, 2009

I also just noticed the link to Episode 128 doesn't go to the episode.

Johnny you seem like a pretty big PC gamer.

Do you have Left 4 Dead for PC? I think you would really enjoy it! I have yet to find someone who has played it who doesn't like it!

Its for 360 too but any PC can run a Valve Source game!

If you have it or are going to get it tell me because I would love too play with you in something one day!

I don't care much for Left 4 Dead. It is alright but I find it overrated (Not to mention the people are nasty who play it).

^
It and Fallout 3 where my two favorite games of 08. I normally just play with friends so its a lot more fun then.

I normally don't play much online but Left 4 Dead is the one exception. I totally love it!

I tried playing the zombie vs human 8 player mode and I was booted from the server for no reason other then I was new. No one even tried to help me out.

I have Left 4 Dead for PC.  Great game, kraken613 you can add me as MrDiamondJ.

GP, stop whining and get back out there.  ;)

YMMV with any online game.  I played the 360 demo of Left 4 Dead and enjoyed it.  However, I don't play a ton of online games -- I already have CoD4 and Team Fortress 2 and only rarely play either.  I'm not very good at online FPS, but they can be a lot of fun.

I read the podcast title everytime I read the thread. Often on accident.

SchadenfreudeFebruary 01, 2009

I'm with GP, I think Left4Dead is overrated. The shooting mechanics aren't as fine tuned as other FPSs and how dynamic the director AI can spawn enemies is often exaggerated.

I added you in Steam! I'm wiikraken.

So what are these exciting changes that Lindy has planned? I hope it means PS3 coverage.

D_AverageFebruary 02, 2009

Question: "What franchise would you like to see turned into a Lego game?"

James:  "Grapes of Wrath."

Classic.  Best RFN line ever.

PlugabugzFebruary 02, 2009

Can we get a section called "Greg's Soliloquy" where greg recites something from a script?

Maybe he could revive Master-Wii Theatre.

ACCEPTED

And the PS3 jokes never stop being funny.

Jonny,

Is this something like what you were talking about with the LEGO franchise?

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/04/lego-battles-break-out-on-ds-this-summer/

Maybe... we'll see how it turns out.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 04, 2009

Legos originally did not believe in implementing other licensed products like Batman, Indiana Jones, Star Wars etc, into their toy line but as the company grew and struggled a bit they expanded to include them. From what I understand they are not really that big of a company even now so I can't really blame them for licensing to other franchises, even if it is sad. Maybe this new game will be a great way to get back to its roots (Yes I love Legos!).

I just listened to the episode for the first time since we recorded it, and I think it's one of the best we've ever done.  Greg, Jon, and I were all really on fire.  It's too bad James was feeling bad and couldn't revel with us.

Take two Petz and call us in the morning.

There was a section where he sniffed really loudly and then he sounded like he was about to sneeze for the universe...
