Muscular French "Chibiz" are the future!

With Jon Lindemann sitting in the host's chair for the jet-setting Jonathan Metts and the calamity of Episode 103 still fresh in everyone's memory, only someone with a title as sober-sounding as "Senior Editor" could be trusted to maintain the maturity of the show, and so Radio Trivia host Michael "TYP" Cole joins the rest of the usual crew for another extensive episode of RFN.

After a New Business segment that includes James making friends with Winnie the Pooh and the unthinkable combination of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and vocal communication, the discussion shifts to the news, including: Mega Man 9 for WiiWare, Castlevania's unanticipated foray into 3D fighting, and Ubisoft's continuing attempts to force James into anger management therapy.

In the final segment, the gang responds to a healthy dose of mail mostly directed at Jonny (naturally), running the gamut of listener concerns from Boom Blox's lacklustre sales to the very survival of the survival horror genre. So sit back, enjoy, and discover James' deep-seated fear of men's biceps.

Can't wait to listen!

ShyGuyJuly 03, 2008

Downloading now, TYP seems way to sensible and level headed for this to episode to become truly epic.

D_AverageJuly 03, 2008

Sweet, had to wake up at 5am for work and now I have something to listen to!

SundoulosJuly 03, 2008

Ah, you've just made my Thursday!  Hardly anyone is in the office since tomorrow's a holiday, so I can just relax and listen while I write code and do some paperwork.

D_AverageJuly 03, 2008

I bought Nanostray 2 myself.  Its a decent shooter allright, however, two big complaints I have is its exceedingly hard, and the style couldn't be more generic if it tried.  Now that I have Invaders, I'll be selling this one away.

AVJuly 03, 2008

Good show guys I LOLed a least 2 x

DAaaMan64July 03, 2008

freakin' awesome

I had to get it done last night, or it wasn't getting done till Sunday.  Despite having to get up at 4:45 AM I solidered on to finish this.

Totally Worth it.

Lindy did a great job hosting even with the Wormhead trying usurp his power.

I AM THE TRUE POWER!  THE VICTOR WRITES THE HISTORY, AND I AM THE HISTORIAN!

I'm just here to keep the peace.

Thanks for the kind words all.  I did my best to keep things under control!  Hosting is definitely a different experience, since you have to keep track of what's going on and act like a referee of sorts (especially with James).  I can't just space out like I normally do.  ;D

My favorite part is when James indignantly says, "I don't know man, you're the host!" like I wasn't doing my job, when I was actually giving him the floor as part of my HOSTING DUTIES.

No respect, I tell ya.  No respect.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorJuly 04, 2008

Now you guys know why I had to go apeshit on 103. I was out of my element! I was so used to keeping things orderly on RFN, that I had all of that pent up potty-mouth! :P

In any case, kudos to Lindy. It's not an easy gig being host, but he did very well.

Also, I laughed my ass off to, "SAVE IT FOR THE SHOW GUYS!" Holy shit, TYP, fucking ACE.

That settles that!

Dan_FlyhightJuly 06, 2008

I have to admit that I was a little miffed at the point at which you guys were talking about survival/horror games, Fallout 3 wasn't mentioned. Although, not coming out for the Wii, it is one of the big games to come out this year. And good job to John (sp?) for hosting for a change. I have to admit, I welcomed it. It was a nice change for once, I can't remember if he did before or not, but I liked his hosting abilities. It was also nice hearing TYP again on the podcast.

LOL. I remember when I saw that for download off Nintendo channel I laughed and imminently downloaded it out of morbid curiosity. That and Lords of thunder are two ongoing jokes that I never grow tired of. When the review is finally posted it will be a MEGATON EVENT.

ShyGuyJuly 06, 2008

Lesse, Current Gen Survival Horror that have been released...

Escape from Bug Island (Wii)
Obscure II: The Aftermath (Wii)
Resident Evil 4: Wii edition (Wii)
Condemned (360)
Condemned 2: Bloodshot (360, PS3)
Clive Barker's Jericho (360)
Alone in the Dark (360, PS3, Wii)

Notable upcoming titles:
Resident Evil 5 (360, PS3)
Silent Hill Homecoming (360, PS3)
Fatal Frame 4 (Wii)

GoldenPhoenixJuly 06, 2008

Not sure I'd call Condemned, or even Jericho survival horror, they are both action oriented games. Even the RE series is going in a more action oriented direction. Also aren't the Fallout games more RPGish?

ShyGuyJuly 06, 2008

You have a good point, what does differntiate survival horror from other genres? The whole survival horror genre (like many genres this generation) is having trouble evolving. That's where I give Alone in the dark credit. It's at least trying to add new things and evolve the genre rather than morph it into the action shooter genre.

Survival Horror has one key aspect, survival. It is a genre built on providing you with limited resources while horrific things are going on around you. Now it can definitely evolve but games like Condemned are quite focused on the action side of things, not much survival. Haven't played Alone in the Dark yet though so I cannot comment on that. Even the RE series is stepping away from its roots, which is too bad in many ways (And I don't mean sloppy controls). I am excited to see what they do with the next Silent Hill, because that series could evolve the genre without stepping too much into the action side of things.

Hahaha.  You know, I've probably given that game more inadvertent PR by NOT completing its review on time.  BTW the review is currently in Beta.

I would liken hosting to being a basketball coach and center at the same time.  You're part of the team and have to make shots, but you also have to keep control and look at what's happening on a meta level in real time.  It takes a lot of concentration and pre-planning.

CalibanJuly 06, 2008

Isn't Dead Rising a survival horror type of game?

ShyGuyJuly 06, 2008

I haven't played it, but I thought it was more Dynasty Warriors style brawler.

Greg is a human being and should not be made a sexual object to bring in listeners. Shame on ShyGuy!

Just so everybody knows, we're doing something different for the next few weeks because of E3.  There should be something soon this week, but next week our plans are pretty different.

This will be a rather different kind of....."different" from 103's unique brand.

Oh I forget to mention, I completely agree w/ the assessments mentioned on the show related to slow Boom Blox sales.  I was recently able to play the game at a buddies house, and though the core gameplay was great, it just wasn't 50 dollars great.

I blame the flying monkeys in EA Marketing Department for this one.

I paid $50 of my own money for Boom Blox and think it's totally worth it.

I would also pay $50 of Jonny's money for Boom Blox.  Easily.

GoldenPhoenixJuly 10, 2008

Boom BLox is an excellent value in my opinion, the game has more depth and more modes than most games out there. The only flaw that keeps it from being truly great is the lack of an online structure to trade user created levels. There are few games with such in depth and flexible level creation tools, and that is only one small part of a diverse game.

YoshidiousGreg Leahy, Staff AlumnusJuly 10, 2008

Having put some more time in with the 1 player stuff and gotten a chance to try some multiplayer, I certainly don't feel like I've been shortchanged having spent the equivalent of $58 to buy Boom Blox. Multiplayer has been an absolute riot so far, and I've just scratched the surface with that. I can understand how this may not be everyone's cup of tea, and it's not what I'd describe as a steal by any means, but the value's there if you think you like the sound of what the game is all about.

D_AverageJuly 10, 2008

Maybe I'll used that 10 dollar Walmart gift card I still have from the Smash Bros Fiasco and get it for 40  8)

Perception is reality.  I never said the game isn't worth 50 bucks. I said that it's presentation sure as hell isn't, and really that's all you have to go on from the box.

I'd say the market has confirmed my assessment.

I understood what you meant Mr. Wormhead.

I guess I understand what James is saying.  From the presentation on the box, title screen, etc., Boom Blox looks similar to a lot of budget-priced casual Wii games.  It's too bad, because there is an amazing game for people who are willing to look beneath the surface.

Those points are valid.  Not to mention the name sucks and falls right into those low selling casual games.

Monkey Go Boom and Sheep Die would have been a MUCH better title.

I will echo the sentiment that Boom Blox is totally worth your cash. If you ask me, it's the best social game since Wii Sports, hands down.

DAaaMan64July 11, 2008

am I crazy? is there no podcast today?

GoldenPhoenixJuly 11, 2008

Darn it, I was going to beat DAaaMan to asking Crimm if it will be out today. :(

Crimm is apparently "swamped", which I take to mean "Miami Nights warranted another play-through".

I have two time sensitive features, that need to be out like...yesterday, a review (on hold), and a time sensitive podcast.

A little busy, yes.  In my defence, we recorded Tuesday night, and Wednesday was devoted to one of the features.

My goal is feature 1 tonight, feature 2 and RFN tomorrow, review Sunday.

The over use of the letter u will not find its way into my writing.  I simply cannot spell, which is really a good non-talent to have when writing for a website.
