New Super Mario Bros. 2's developers will make new Coin Rush stages for the game after its release.

Nintendo announced that New Super Mario Bros. 2 will feature paid DLC after its release.

The downloadable content will contain new Coin Rush stages created by the team after the game is out. The team will use feedback given to them from players to create new stages. Since, as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said, they don't even know what the content will be right now, there are no firm details yet.

Coin Rush is a new mode in the game that challenges players to complete three stages on one life while collecting as many coins as possible. They will be able to StreetPass friends to compare scores.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is coming out on August 19 in North America, July 28 in Japan, and August 17 in Europe.

"Nintendo announced that New Super Mario Bros. 2 will feature paid DLC after its release."

...and it will be wildly successful thanks to avid Nintendo gamers such as UncleBob

While I'm still irked we have no main Mario vs. Luigi mode, this sounds promising. :D

I do wonder...  If you download the MK7 patch, it downloads to the SD card and works on different cartridges when they're in the system.

Wonder if that will work the same way with paid DLC...

The thing I don't get about this is game is why is it "all about the coins." Like, what do you get? Before, I just collected coins for 1-ups. Is it like earning points? Points didn't do anything either unless you did the 1-up trick at the end of level 3-1.

It's just a goal.  A fun reason to play the game.  I figure there might be some lame story-line reason (Princess has been kidnapped and they're asking for a ransom!) but it's just there to provide a reason to replay levels and try to, basically, get a high score.

Though, as much as they're pushing that "Million Coin Counter" thing, I assume something interesting will happen at that point.

I do wonder though... DLC... playable Wario?

Interesting. There doesn't seem to be much structure to it besides getting to 1 million coins. Super Mario Bros. 3 had levels that unlocked White Mushroom Houses if you got every single coin. I could never get them; I'm just using it as an example of levels that had collecting coins as central goal in mind.

That 1 Million Coin counter sounds dubious at best. I did everything in Super Mario 3D Land and all I got was a thank you message.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo will handle DLC for Mario. Most if not all of the downloadable expansion content for Fire Emblem: Awakening was free in a limited manner, if I recall correctly.

It is noticeable how strongly Reggie stresses that the purchasable future levels for the coin rush mode of New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be made after the base game is complete and shipped. An obvious address to the negative sentiment of Day 1 DLC or DLC made in the same development time frame of the base game.

The DLC is only part of the "Coin Rush" mode, an interesting way to circumvent the trickiness of adding new levels/worlds to the existing single player map.
I say interesting, more like unoriginal/lazy.
It's the digital equivalent of the eCard levels, great, but I don't want to have my new (note: PAID FOR) levels presented to me in an awkward fashion or as a bonus event.
Am I being harsh here?

Why not just have an endless "bonus world" where you can practice the stages before undertaking the Coin Rush challenges. Also are these StreetPass only? Great for me and the Famicast crew, but what about everyone else?
I hope they have the ability to share to your friends over SpotPass...

On a positive note, bravo to Nintendo for emphasising the fact that these are in addition to main content and haven't even been made yet. (although I did spot a slight nervous twitch in Reggie's eye as he said it!)
Here's hoping they go CRAZY experimental with these bonus stages as they don't need to be part of a world theme.

The rampant coin collecting is an unusual hook and I support the sentiment that this theme would make more sense for a new instalment in the Wario Land series. No doubt my completionist streak with Mario games will force me to achieve that 1 Million milestone, but I've already set my expectations low on any sort of reward for doing that.

I think Jonny said it on RFN - expect a bigger in-game house or something trivial like that..

Peach will use that million coins to make you a cake, Bowser finds away to hide inside it and jumps out to kidnap Peach, Mario looks at the camera and shrugs as he says "Here we go again!" then an iris closes on his face followed by the credits rolling.

As for new levels as DLC, it's a much better method of distribution than a separate peripheral that scans paper cards with dot codes printed on them.

*cough*Capcom*cough*
Jokes aside, this sounds interesting but I might not be able to buy these levels.  :'(

Although I don't subscribe to this depth of negativity I did find the following observation delightful:

NSMB2 feels like a bit of a cash-in, especially with NSMBU waiting in the wings
NSMB2 is the first game for sale over Nintendo Network - with higher profits for Nintendo
NSMB2 is the firs paid DLC game (at least in this market) for Nintendo

AND THIS TIME IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GOLD

Technically you didn't need every coin, you just needed to reach a certain amount (though that amount was usually pretty close to the total).

So... Some forums seem to have people on there saying Reggie said the DLC levels would be free.

Are they crazy?

Here's a wacky thought... the DLC could be paid for... by coins you collect in the game! :D

They should make it so if you collect a million coins, you get some free DLC. That sounds appropriate.
