"Also, 18 of the top 25 best-selling titles are on Nintendo platforms"

The way this is worded makes it sound to me that those 18 titles are AVAILABLE on Nintendo platforms but aren't necessarily the Nintendo versions. For example, I doubt the Wii version of NBA 2K11 was in the top 25, while the other versions probably did as the combined sales of the different versions got it in the top 10.

I get what you mean. When I first wrote this up, I was a tad confused by Nintendo's wording in the press release, but it looks like the games that are in the top are either Nintendo only, or with games like Zumba Fitness, the Wii title is selling the best.

The press release says 13 out of 25, so i is confused.

5 of the to 10 and 13 of the top 25. I just merged the two in the article.

Aren't the top 10 included in the top 25?  If they are, saying 18 out of 25 would be counting five of them twice.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out.

My favourite Nintendo NPD stat for this month is that Wii Play Motion did <30k. It got beat by Child of Eden and everyone thinks that was the daughter of all bombas (Shadows of the Damned, at sub 30k combined, is the mother.)

Shame. Both of those games were really good.

I think what's crazy is that Ocarina even sold that many.  Okay, I bought one, but I'm a hardcore fan.  But what are there, like 2 or 3 million 3DS's in the U.S. right now?    At nearly 300,000 in 2 weeks, that means 1 in 10 3DS owners bought that freakin game.

And as icing on the cake, I've gotten 2 natural streetpasses post E3 (natural, as in, not at a game convention or game store or streetpass gathering or any other artificially created situation where streetpasses become more common than they would be) and 1 of them was playing Ocarina.  The other was, shamefully, messing with their system settings.

Maybe they wanted the soundtrack. I was planning to buy the game eventually, but I bought it the day after it came out because I found out that Nintendo had that 2 day deadline for it (which they eventually extended to "while supplies last").

When did it become a surprise for a Zelda game to sell well? Besides, it isn't like there is much else out there for the 3DS.

I think he meant that the instal rate was large for it. And IIRC, Spirit Tracks sold pretty poorly.

If I remember rightly, Spirit Tracks is largely regarded as mediocre, and is the sequel to Phantom Hourglass which also seems to receive a lot of hate. It isn't much surprise they didn't sell well. Ocarina of Time is still considered one of the best games of all time, so I'm not surprised one bit it sold so well. I actually expected a number a tad higher. Perhaps the stigma of the previous two DS titles hindered its reputation a bit.

The Zelda fanbase is extremely diehard so there's no surprise.  At the Wii's launch, when it sold over 600,000 systems, Twilight Princess had an 87% attachment rate.  Meaning almost 9 out of 10 of everyone who bought a Wii at launch in North America, bought the system for Zelda.

Almost 3 million copies worldwide is not poorly.  Now yes, it underperformed when compared to Phantom Hourglass which sold over 4 million copies, but it still did better than some of the other handheld Zelda's like the GBA LttP/Four Swords and Minish Cap did.

TJ SpykeJuly 17, 2011

Just small correction, but the Wii did 476K in North America the month it launched, not 600K. Twilight Princess did have a 86% penetration though since it sold 412K. A big reason was because it was basically the only good launch game.

Ocarina of Time is number two? You know what's number two? Nintendo's ability to harness their online community, am I right?

I give this attempt a 4.  Didn't fit into the flow well.  Especially with Penetration to work with.
